Migration assistant calls my laptop an iMac

Why, when I use the migration assistant from Time Machine, does it think my 17" MacBook Pro is an iMac?

Are you saying it's copied the Computer Name of the Mac whose backups it migrated from?
If so, that's normal. Just go to +System Preferences > Sharing+ and change it.
If not, please clarify the problem.

  • Migration Assistant from MacPro to new iMac

Just received my new iMac with OS 10.9.  My old computer is a MacPro purchased late 2008 using OS 10.6.8.  What is best way to transfer everything to the new iMAC?  The Mac Pro has USB2, Firewire 400/800 & Gigabit Ethernet.  The new iMac has Thunderbolt, USB3 & Gigabit Ethernet.  I have a Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter so can I use that connection for Mirgration Assistant or should I use the Gigabit Ethernet connection.  Just concerned my cable for the Ethernet connection is not current.  Also concerned that don't have same problem as couple years ago when did the Mirgation Assistant from an older iMAC to a new iMAC for my wife.  Some files didn't transfer and also Permissions were totally messesd up as later when tried to recover a file from Time Machine I kept getting message that "did not have permission".  Thanks to Apple Support I finally found a solution for recovering the file.  Haven't turned on the new iMAC yet as want to make sure I do the migration assistant right - No thanks to the manuals Apple now includes with new iMacs.    Thank You for your help.

I got everything transferred to the new iMAC following Pondini's article Setup Assistant tips  mentioned above by rkaufmann87.  Thank You.  Went to the section  "Problems after using Migration Assistant" and sub section "Fixing a UID mismatch after using Migration Assistant".  Generated temp user accts, logged off all accounts and then logged on the Temp Admin user acct and deleted all other user accts.  Then restarted iMAC and did the update from Time Machine disk from older MacPro.  Then logged off the Temp Admin acct and on to the account transferred over from the MacPro.   Best read the article to get all the details.  Then had to change names etc. to make them different from the old MacPro.  Still trying to get that straightened out.  As far as I know Permissions are OK.
Now the iMAC power on is VERY SLOW.  Takes 3 min 20 sec to start up, even with all external devices disconnected.  Also having other compatibility problems.

  • Migration Assistant not finding my new iMac

I had a VERY slow MA process going from old iMac to new iMac.  So I did a little research and apparently it was so slow because by default I was getting a wireless process. So I turned off the Airport on the old iMac and conncected the machines with an ethernet cable. Now the new machine is not getting recognized by the old one.  TIA for your help.

I feel the easiest, and most reliable, way of migrating data from an old Mac to a new one is using the Time Machine backup from an external drive.
The best source for help with this process comes from "The Great Pondini".  Here's a link to his site that is, by far, the premier source for help with this transfer:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html
Since you've already booted your Mac up and tried Migration Assistant, Setup Assistant won't be available to you (it's only available upon initial bootup of a new Mac).
I would pay particular attention to user accounts when you look at pondini's site, as Migration Assistant can create some headaches for the unwary.
    Enjoy your new iMac!

  • Migration assistant from MacBook Pro to iMac time too long.

Okay. I know this has been asked a number of times but I have yet to find a discussion with the time span my macs have given me. Quick story: Migration assistant from 2006-ish model MacBook Pro with snow leopard to brand new iMac (got it three days ago). The absolute only option I have been given is to transfer via wifi, regardless if thunderbolt/firewire or Ethernet is plugged in. Nothing else will come up so I am forced to do a wifi transfer. My time span is about 124 hours, which is nuts. Given, I am transferring about 500gb (I'm a recording musician). Is this normal or is there something hosing up my transfer? It is moving, but very slowly. Since last night it has moved almost a quarter of the way. Has anyone else had this long of a wait? And no, I don't have a large external hd.

    Hello flyinghostie,
If you've not already, you'll need to launch Migration Assistant on both systems. The article linked below provides further information that you may find helpful.

  • Migration Assistant doesn't recognize old iMac OSX

I just bought a new iMac 20 inch running Tiger. In the migration assistant (first initial setup), it asks if I would like to transfer files and settings from an old iMac using a FireWire cable (I do). After it prompts me, I boot my "old" iMac (PowerPC G4 running OS 10.2.8) in FireWire Target Disk Mode (pressing "T" while restarting). Then connect the FireWire cable from my old iMac to the new iMac. The migration assistant says that OSX is not installed on my "old" computer (which it is).
I've done some research on this forum about this topic. I've checked if my old Mac needs a firmware update (it doesn't). How can I fix this problem - I would really like to run the migration assistant from the get-go. Any assistance would be very appreciated. Thanks.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

One thing I don't know if it is relevant, but I found having the same username already created on my new machine when I ran the migration assistant caused it to fail.
If you haven't created anything essential on your new Mac, run the restore disks over again, and create an alternative user name:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61802
Once that is done, then try to run the Migration Assistant from the Applications -> Utilities folder, and then login the old username and delete the new one.

  • Problems using OS10.9.2 with migration assistant to transfer files from imac with OS10.6.8

Having problems using the Migration assistant on a new imac with OS10.9.2 to transfer files from an old imac with OS 10.6.8.

The Migration Assistant can transfer files from a computer running Mac OS X 10.1 or newer, but shouldn't be used to migrate applications from a PowerPC Mac to an Intel Mac.

  • Migration assistant -- causing problems on new iMac?

I got a new 20" iMac yesterday. Specs are 2.16Ghz, 1 gig RAM, 128 meg video memory. I transferred all my settings and data from my mini using the mini in target disk mode with the firewire connection. I've had to reinstall a couple of drivers but other than that everything seems to have transferred fine. However, the iMac seems sluggish at many tasks and is doing some quirky things. A good example is that right now, I just mapped a drive on my Windows PC and it mapped fine but the "Connecting to Server" status window is still up and won't go away. It also seems to be slow opening some apps, etc. Could transferring everything from my mini have caused this? Would it be better to just reinstall OSX clean and install everything from scratch? Could the problems be because I migrated from a PPC Mac to an Intel?
I have 2 gigs of RAM on order so I know that will help but this seems like a bigger problem than just a lack of memory...
    Thanks
    Todd

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you fixed the problem. Now, get a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup/clone, using Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc. That will mitigate future problems when updating stuff.

  • Migration Assistant - Computers fail to find each other - Dell Windows 7hp to iMac OS X Mavericks - all firewalls on both machines are disabled

I dont post here often but after a few days of trying different things I am at a loss so here it goes:
Previous Machine: c2009 Dell, Windows 7 Home Premium
New Machine: late 2012 iMac, OS X Mavericks, Parallels 10 Installed
Both computers connected to existing business network via ethernet. All firewalls and updates are disabled on both computers, screen savers and sleep modes are also disabled.
The first strategy was to transfer data using the Parallels Migration Wizard. The wizard finds the PC and begins the transfer, but gets to about 1/5 progress and hangs/ stops every time in the same spot. I disabled everything (firewall, etc.) I can think of on the windows PC and it still hangs in the same place every time.
The second strategy was to use the Migration Assistant that came on the iMac. The computers fail to find each other every time. so I haven't been able to even start the process. Searching on the iMac Network folder I can find and access the Dell (after changing security settings on the Dell to allow this). From the Dell Network folder I am not able to find or access the iMac.
So, I have submitted a help request to Parallels to see what they can do to help, but I also wanted to reach out here in case someone has experienced this before.
    Thanks

  • Migration assistant not working (10.5.8 Macbook to new Lion iMac)

Just bought a new iMac and had the Apple store update it to Lion. I fire up migration assistant on both and new iMac tells me to update software on the macbook - but there are no software updates available, I'm totally up to date.
I've tried ethernet, wireless, enabling cd sharing on both, restarting, initiating from either. Doesn't seem to be any info on this exact case online... I don't want to restore the system to get to the setup assistant because i'll lose my lion download.
    Can anyone help?
For something that the Apple store said would be dead simple this sure is a pain in the a$$

This is absurd. I would like to take a minute to thank Apple for making sure that:
Nothing on their own website indicates that a transfer from a 10.5.8 to Lion is currently impossible.
Are you sure you've read everything on this page?
If I can read it right, it says on step 2:
    "Step 2:
Make sure you have the latest version of Snow Leopard."
I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but for me, that means "yon can't install Lion from any other system version than 10.6.8"
I don't think it's fair either. Leopard owners will have to buy 2 systems, but advertised, it definetely was.

  • Can't get migration assistant to move files

Trying to move from an old laptop - Dell Inspiron I6000 running Windows XP version 2002 to a new iMac.  Have downloaded Migration Assistant on the laptop and run it, but when I get to the 3rd screen it says "an error occurred while preparing your information for transfer" and forces me to quit Migration Assistant.  Any ideas?  Any alternate ways of moving the information from this laptop to the iMac?

Did you figure this out?  I'm having the same problem

  • Question re: Migration Assistant

    Brief question regarding Migration Assistant:
We currently have an iMac in the office that's about 3-4 years old (specs associated with this iMac are posted along with this question, of course). We are going to be acquiring one of the brand-new 27 inch iMacs at the end of this month.
The old iMac only has USB 2.0, along with FireWire 800. The new iMac only sports USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt.
Therefore, in order to use Migration Assistant I'm assuming I will need to get adapter cables…? What exact adapter cables are recommended under the circumstances?

I'm assuming that the Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter sold by Apple would work on the new iMac (I didn't even realize that there was no FW support on them - I'm not in the market for one - but I think that the handwriting is on the proverbial wall when it comes to FW).
I would call Apple or drop by your local Apple Store just to confirm that the TB>FW800 adapter will work on the new iMacs.
I'm sure glad I'm cutting my FW drives loose and going with TB drives now...

  • Migration Assistant password woes w/ Mountain Lion

Having a bag of hurt trying to migrate from an old iMac to a new Retina Display MacBook Pro.
Using Carbon Copy CLoner, I cloned my iMac's drive to a USB external, to simplify/automate migrating the data to the MBP. The transfer went normally, but the MBP is refusing to recognize my password when I try to login.
    Steps I've taken so far:
    - Booting the MBP from the USB external connected to the MBP. Works fine, with no password problem.
    - Booting to the Recovery partition, erasing the main drive, and reinstalling the OS, then running Migration Assitant over again. Long process, same password trouble.
    - Erasing main partition again, then running Migration Assistant directly from the source iMac via wireless. Slow, but it worked. And I got the same result: pasword not accepted.
    - Creating a Test User account with no data migration, then loggin in at the App Store to download the previously purchsed Mountain Lion installer. (The MBP is brand new, but shipped with Lion instead of Mountain Lion). At the end, I got some cockamamie "can't download" error.
    Aaaaargh!!
Could it be related to the iMac haivng been upgraded to Mountain Lion before the process bega, while the newly-arrived MBP had Lion installed? I wouldn't think that would screw up a simple data migration, but...
    Anyone?

Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger to OS X Lion
Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 computers to OS X Lion over your Wi-Fi or a wired network is not supported. However, if both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port, you can use Target Disk Mode to transfer your data:
Verify that both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port. Note that different model Macs may have different FireWire connectors, which will require an appropriate cable, such as FireWire 400 to FireWire 800.
On the Mac you want to transfer data from, Restart, and immediately hold the T key.
Wait for the FireWire logo to appear on the screen.  If it does not, restart and try again.
Connect both Macs via the FireWire cable.
On the Mac you want to transfer data to, Open the Migration Assistant application.
Select the option "From another Mac, PC, Time Machine backup, or other disk" and click Continue.
Select the option "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" and click Continue.
Select your other Mac's volume, such as "Macintosh HD", from the list, and click Cont
EDIT: Actually I realize you did follow these directions and if your drive is seen on the new Mac it should work. You're entitled to free Apple support with the new purchase, I'd give them a call.

  • Steps to take after interrupting Migration Assistant?

Earlier today I was 1/4 through migrating some files with Migration Assistant between two intel-based imacs via Wi-fi when a thunderstorm passed by and I felt compelled to shut the computers down. I quit Migration Assistant on the receiving computer first, sending computer second, and then shut both down. I have a few questions about this:
    1) What complications might this have caused?
    2) Is it possible to tell what files were transferred?
    3) If I used Migration Assistant to transfer the same categories, would the files that have already been transferred be overwritten?

Possibly no consequences depending upon what you were transferring at the time. If system files then the computer may not boot.
You cannot tell what hasn't or has been transferred.
Starting anew and allowing for completion shouldn't present any problem.
