Migration assistant can't access Time capsule back up

Hello,
my old Macbook pro died yesterday and I bought a new one. I am trying to migrate all my files from a Time Capsule/Time Machine back up using the migration assistant. However it does not work: I get the message
"The back up cannot be opened. Make sure that all of your network devices are connected and turned on. It appears that this backup is already in use.  Make sure the backup is not currently mounted by another machine and try again."
I can connect of course to my Time Capsule, and see the sparsebundle file.
What should I do?
I am always on Leopard both on the old and the new Macs.
Thanks!

So far I have made an improvement: I have managed to unmount all users using the Airport utility, and now it seems the Migration assistant would be working...
More news soon.
Thanks

  • Set up and migration assistant can't see time machine back ups

Hi. Trying to cut this short.
I Tried installing osx 10.8. Halfway through the installation it told me I didn't have enough free space. Helpful.
i tried to restore from time machine, the back ups were viewable, but it said i couldn't as the disk was in use or couldn't be un mounted.
Ive now deleted the hard drive and reinstalled 10.7.5.
Set up couldn't restore from time machine back ups as it couldn't find them.
Ive started osx and tried to use migration assistant. It can't see the time machine back ups.
However, if I open the time machine app it can see the back ups.
    I've rebooted in recovery and

Seems my text has vanished. This site is terrible on my iphone. Would expect better.
I've rebooted in recovery and tried to restore from time machine but again it won't find the back ups.

  • Can't access Time Capsule/back-up Time Machine

I keep getting a note that I can't back up my Time Machine, and my Time Capsule is not being recognized when I try to access it, although it is still working as an Airport.

Exact error message and number if you can..
    Look at the troubleshooting page.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
The first most basic and fundamental troubleshooting..
Did you turn it off and on again?
Turn off everything on the network. That includes pulling the cord out of the TC.
With everything powered off.. power up again in order.
    Modem
    TC
    Computers
A 2 min gap between each line.
Magically a lot of the problems disappear.
If it doesn't and you cannot find the error.. load the widget from Pondini, A1.

  • Attempting to use Migration Assistant to restore a Time Capsule backup to a mounted partitioned drive?

Had a power surge and my Mac Pro did not fare well. Was able to boot from one of the drives in read only mode, so I did a Time Capsule backup of everything on the drive. Reinstalled Mountain Lion. Booted the computer up and am trying to use Migration Assistant to take the Time Capsule backup and restore it to the 1TB drive. When I use Migration Assistant, it says that there is not enough space on the drive to do the restore. I looked in Disk Utility and saw that the start up disk is another one of the 1TB drives with about 600GB used, therefore not enough space to do the restore. I want to restore to the original drive, but it says it is a "Mounted Partitioned Drive". Can I use Migration Assistant to restore a Time Capsule backup to this mounted partitioned drive?
Thanks in advance for any help - greatly appreciated.

I am not sure, never had to go there, I have multiple bootable clones of the system online and off, and a couple 1500VA/900W UPS units powering everything.

  • After upgrading to Lion I can't access time capsule pre lion.

Last week I backedup to time capsule via cable.
    I then upgraded to Lion.
After upgrading I backedup to TC again.
Now my MBP 17  can't access time capsule pre lion. So I can't see any of my last 2 years of Snow Leopard data.

yikes, I had to move all my years of iPhoto folders/pix from very old iMac to a new HP laptop with PC Vista Home Premium....now finally ready and hoping to do years worth of photo albums! so I go in to these files and of course they don't open...because they're on pc.
    - I am techno ignorant on all this, what can I do? Is there any way I can open these on PC or do I need to go back and reinstall on a very very very old AND slow slow slow mac? these photos were created in 199, 200, 2001 up through 2007 so through many versions of iPhoto and Mac OS. I am hoping I can retrieve them - and very worried I cannot! Would love advice and help.
    - and on a separate note, any good, inexpensive iPhoto and iTunew wizard/tech support professionals out there in the Menlo Park, CA area?

  • Can I access time capsule file without using imac

can I access time capsule file without using imac

From a time machine backup? No. If you mean just a regular file stored on there? Not directly. There are a couple of apps out there where you can indirectly get to a file but it's a pain. If you have need of accessing a file both from the mac and the iPad then I suggest DropBox. You get 2GB free and it's a good way to share information between machines and devices.

Yes. See this thread about how to access the disk attached to a Time Capsule.  Access to the Time Capsule itself can be done similarly.

  • MacBook Air 11" can't access Time Capsule Disk

    Hi:
I have two Minis, a MPB 13" and a MBA 11" connected to my Time Capsule. My MBP and the two Minis can access the Time Capsule disk with no problem. It's a different story for the MBA.
From the MBA, I can see my Time Capsule in Finder (Bonjour) and I can click on it, however the disk never appears. Clicking "connect as" doesn't do anything either. From Finder if I go "connect to server" and I type the IP address of my Time Capsule it connects without problems, but it won't connect with its name.
I am able to connect the disk on my other Macs from the MBA via Bonjour, just not the Time Capsule. As mentionned earlier, the Time Capsule disk is available from my other Macs and even from Windows.
I rebooted a few times and confirmed that the username/password are properly saved in the keychain of my MBA.
Any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks!

Are your other Macs connected via Wifi or ethernet? It sounds like some sort of network configuration issue. If they are connected via Wifi then I'd make sure the MBA has the same settings for it's network. Alternately I'd get rid of the keychain entry on the MBA and re-enter it to make sure it's correct. As a last resort I'd restart the Time Capsule and see if it makes a difference. I'm connecting a MBA to a Time Capsule so it should work.

  • Back To My Mac: Can access Mac, can't access Time Capsule

I have a Time Capsule and also a Macbook Air behind an ATT modem/router. I have enabled Back To My Mac on both. I also clicked Enable File Sharing and set a password. From a friend's house, I can log in to MobileMe and see both the Mac and the Time Capsule in my Finder. Here's the problem: I can then connect to my Mac's disk and browse files, but I can't connect to the TC disk at all, it just says "Connection Failed". I don't know if the router supports uPNP or NAT-PMP, and I don't have the ability to set up port forwarding, so maybe I'm out of luck. I guess what confuses me is that I can get to my Mac, so I would assume the same protocols are in use to get to the Time Capsule. Any thoughts on what I might have done wrong? Thanks for the help.
    -ts-

I can even use Airport Utility to configure the remote Time Capsule, but I can't seem to access the disk on it for a remote Time Machine backup. I've Googled and Binged and can't seem to find any reason why this wouldn't work. Anyone?
    Thanks,

  • Migration assistant restore problem with time capsule

    Hi People,
I have the weirdest of all problems. Let me explain what happend and you will be as amazed as I am now.
    ======
I have been using a 2TB time capsule for about a year and a half now. Every day for 18 months everything was being backupt. Everything smooth no problem.
My 27" iMac needed a fresh install at home because I have been upgrading from SL to Lion and thing got a bit odd. So this is what I did in a nut shell.
    1. Bought a new 27" iMac Quad core with 12 Gb ram etc. (I bought it for my office)
    2. At home started up the new iMac and the migration assisant asked me what I wanted.
    3. Did a full restore from the TC and all my user data was restore to the new iMac!
=== Hurray so far, evrything worked liked it should.===
This was my test, now I was confident to erase my "old" iMac and do a full Lion reinstall and then use migration assisant to restore all files.
It worked with the new iMac so nothing to loose.
So I erased the new iMac, boxed it again and took it to the office.
Now It was time for my old iMac to be reinstalled.
    =====
    4. So I erased my "old" iMac.
    5. Did a clean Lion install from DvD.
    6. Did all software updates (as I had done with the new iMac).
    7. started Migration Assistant
    8. Pointed to the time capsule and did everything like the day before
    9. Got an error message.
    =====
***?? I tested this it should work. Now ALL my data is gone. All my movies, honeymoon, kids growing up, etc etc etc etc.
    Everything gone gone gone!
So now I can browse to the TC and see the sparsebundle file. It is 1.5TB. I can show package contents and see the files, I can go into the "Bands" dir. and see a bunch of files. But I can not repair, mount, use disk utils with the sparsebundle.
The data must be in the 1.5 Tb file but I have no way of accessing it.
I need some good advice / help from someone because my whole family history is gone at this moment  .

That's usually the last thing to try.    Depending on what was wrong, simply installing a fresh version of OSX would be likely to fix it.  If not, finding and addressing the actual problem would probably be much better than starting with the "nuclear" option.
    5. Did a clean Lion install from DvD.
    6. Did all software updates (as I had done with the new iMac).
    7. started Migration Assistant
It's much better to use Setup Assistant when your Mac first starts up after installing OSX, to prevent Problems after using Migration Assistant.
    9. Got an error message.
Was that the "some backups cannot be opened" message?  If so, try to repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Time machine can not access time capsule after upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion

Two days ago I upgraded my 2009 17" MBP from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. That evening my time capsule/time machine combination worked fine and did an incremental backup of about 12 gigabyte. Yesterday - only one day later - the time machine backup did not work anymore.
It appears that the system can not find the time capsule - even though it shows the remaining free space on the time capsule (so it did find it after all).
The message is always the same:
Time Machine can not complete the backup "Time Capsule"
The image of the backup volume "/Volumes/Data/Pauls MacBookPro.sparsebundle" is not accessable (Error -1).
I also can not delete the backup image on the time capsule since it is read-only. And I do not want to format the time caspsule yet since my wife's MBAir is also using the same time casule.
I tried out all kinds of suggestions (hard and soft resetting both the MBP and the TC, entering the password again, setting the TC up again) all to no avail. No backup is possible anymore.

Sounds like you got this message earlier:
If so, see #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Offhand, I don't recall anyone not being able to delete one via the Finder (but most were only backing-up one Mac, so just erased the disk).
You may have to wait for that message to appear again (24 hours later), or you might try holding Alt/Option with the TM icon in the menubar, and select Verify Backups if it will let you.

  • Had to reformat my imac but now can't access time capsule to get my old fil

I had to reformat my imac, running snow leopard. Got it reinstalled. I'm reading my time capsule volume but it has problems connecting to allow me to restore my old settings files, (photos, music etc)
I'm not sure if I'm tackling this correctly. I'm using Migration Assistant, should I be going through Time Machine? I tried both but am having issues. My airport setting are fine. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for the feedback and the link to the help page.
I had to reformat because my imac was not responding at all. It would open but super slow. In disc utilities I tried reparing disc multiple times, kept getting a message saying the disc was corrupted something about sibling error???, back up all your files, erase and restore.
I've been running snow leopard and have had a time capsule for a while so I erased and spent the next two days trying to reinstall OSX unsuccessfully. Called the apple tech support, tried their idea of reinstalling snow leopard after an erase. It would not install.
Took my computer into the genius bar and they were able to reinstall immediately. We tried a direct ethernet connect to my time capsule at the genius bar but it would not work. It didn't see any time machine volume. The time capsule was flahing yellow. When I hook it to my router it is solid green, gives me a "connecting message" but doesn't open.
anyway so now I bring the imac back home and it won't connect to time machine. Will try from my disc to restore from time machine and will hook up with ethernet again, see if it works.
I feel I'm missing a step when I connect direct with the ethernet but have a flashign yellow light on time capsule. Any ideas on that.
    thanks again

  • Can see, but can't access Time Capsule

I just installed the Time Capsule. Wi-Fi works. I can't figure out how to access the time capsule hard drive from the desktop that is wired to Time Capsule. I can see it in the work group, but it will not access it. I disabled the firewall and it didn't help. I have laptops connected throught Wi-Fi, but I can't figure out how to make them "see" the Time Capsule either.
    THANKS!!

Do you have a computer plugged in by ethernet? If not do so.. press and hold the reset for 10sec if you still have no access.
You may even need to remove it completely from the network.. plug directly into a computer with no other connection.
Once you have access take the firmware back to 7.5.2 as the later versions are specifically for Lion and do nothing but add bugs for every OS.
    Then the following need fixing.
    1. All names are wrong for SMB.. change to short no spaces no special characters.
    2. Fix and lock the wireless. Use channels 1, 6, 11 in turn.
    3. Set a separate name for 5ghz.
    4. Use wpa2 private security.. set passkey as above.. no spaces pure alphanumeric 8-12 characters.

  • Can you access time capsule remotely?

I am currently at work and would like to access backed up files from time capsule, didn't know if this is possible.

Yes, you can on a Mac as the TC is only able to present AFP access to the internet.
There is a number of methods to set this up but since Apple is shutting mobileme the easy method has finished.
Follow the info in this thread.. starting with the post at the bottom.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2792797?tstart=0
That is valid for TC if it is set as the router in the network, and takes the public ip on its wan interface.
If the TC is behind another router, you will need to open tcp and udp on port 548 to get access.
It is relatively simple to do.. but I am fairly sure this is not secure.. even if you put a decent password on the disk, which indeed you should do, it is open to man in the middle type attack. If the content on the TC is not an issue.. then you can live with the risk, but if you would prefer not to have people get access, I would say this is the wrong way and you should use a vpn router, and bridge the TC.
You will need to check that your workplace allows access as many work places will consider what you are doing is a risk as well.
