Migration Assistant crashed new iMac, won't boot

I bought a new i3 iMac and skipped the migration assistant initially. Things were going fantastic, I imported and built a new iTunes library, iPhoto library etc.
It is running 10.6.6.
Then last night I decided to use Migration Assistant to move things from old Intel MacBook (running 10.5.8). As the migration was going to be something like 20-30 GiG's, I unchecked everything except Applications, and a few select folders from each user account (Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Movies). Since one account had the same name as the account on my new iMac, I asked Migration Assistant to rename the old account. I then went to sleep.
When I woke up, iMac screen was black and would not wake up from sleep. Old MacBook tells me that the connection was dropped.
I had to depress power button to force shutoff. Upon restart, at the apple boot logo, all I get is a message saying the computer has to be restarted, which appears in multiple languages. There seems to be nothing I can do to get it to boot.
Help?

That's likely a complication. You'll now have an extra user account with that stuff in it, and the account(s) you transfer won't have permission to it.

That's a *kernel panic.*
They are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software.
Try running this: [Apple Hardware Test: iMac (Mid 2007) and later models|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1883]. Run the Extended tests.

Once you get it started, check the transferred user accounts; most likely, the transfer was incomplete, and you'll have to delete the partial accounts and run the Migration again.
If your Apps were only partially transferred, just select them again -- Migration Assistant will just skip any that already exist on the new Mac. The only problem you might have is if it was in the middle of transferring an app when it failed; in that case you may have a partial copy of the app.

  • Brand new iMac won't boot :-(

    Hi All,
    I just got a brand new iMac. I did a clean install of Leopard, imported a couple of CDs into iTunes, and then thought I'd give Bootcamp a go.
    I created the disk and the machine duly rebooted into Windows setup. As the installer couldn't see the Bootcamp partition (I was using XP without SP2). I told the installer to quit and reboot.
    Now all I get is a hanging white screen when I power up my iMac. If i hold down the Alt key I get a mouse pointer which locks up after a couple of seconds and that's it.
    I've tried:
    - Holding down alt on bootup - this brings up a pointer which locks after about 2 seconds
    - Holding down alt+C - with Leopard in the drive - nothing happens
    - Zapping the PVRAM - AltCMD+PR" - this had no effect
    - Resetting the SMU - hold down power whilst plugging in - now all the fans are running at maximum speed

    Is the machine completely toast?

    The same thing happened to me this last week. After talking to Apple on the phone for hours they decided that it was dead and declared it doa (even though it was working for a few hours before boot camp). I am getting my new one this week. I can promise you that boot camp will not be put used on this one.

  • My brand new iMac won't boot up...

    I've used my iMac about 10 times since June, and I'm having problems boting it up... when i switch it on, it cycles forever. Not sure what to do ??

    I would first reset the SMC:
    Shut down and unplug the Mac.
    Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
    Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
    Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
    Then I would reset the PRAM by rebooting the iMac while simultaneously holding the Command-Option-P-R keys until the machine restarts a second time.
    Let us know if these  procedures don't solve the problems.

  • Migration Assistant won't recognize my Time Capsule's sparse-bundle so I can migrate to my new iMac

    Background.......
    iMac (intel core duo) hard drive crashed while backing up to time capsule. Had Snow Leopard OS 10.6 (100% up-to-date)
    2.   Purchased new iMac with Lion. 100% updated.
    3. Want to migrate from Time Capsule to new iMac
    Problem.......
    4.  Migration Assistant does not see (recognize) my sparsebundle, message says it's "possible that it is in use."  But it's not of course.
    5.  If I mount the Time Capsule from the Finder, I can see the sparsebundle I want to migrate. So, it present but the Migration Assistant doesn't see it!
    6. Time Capsule recognizes the sparsebundle of my other Mac (#2) that backs up to the same Time Capsule
    Question.......
    What do I have to do to get Migration Assistant to recognize my sparsebundle so I can migrate to my new iMac?

    I finally solved the problem by disconnecting the Time Capsule ethernet cable from the internet.  Then the sparsebundle suddenly appeared.

  • IMac won't boot after trying to migrate files to macbook?

    While trying to migrate info from my IMAC to my Macbookpro all work froze on both puters. Macbook starts and runs alright. But my IMAC won't boot at all. Tried startup disc and it won't get past picking a destination because it doesn't list one.  I made a boo boo hear and need help fixing this.

    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • Migration Assistant crashing

    Looking for assistance here.
    Have an older iMac 24" 8.1 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (1TB drive) which is running 10.9.4 .
    Just opened the box today to my new iMac 27" 5k retina 3.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5 (3TB fusion drive) which is running 10.10
    Anyway wanting to use the apple migration assistant to move my valuable mail, itunes, calendar and files and photos (especially my aperture library)
    I connected with Ethernet cable, and had migration running ok on both iMac's. Things work fine (confirmation on both sides, code displayed, etc.) until the target iMac is trying to find all the items to migrate. The old iMac is showing that it is transferring, but then the migration assistant crashes on my older iMac and return to the user login screen.
    This has happened on a number of occasions, and I tried with Ethernet cable (I had wifi turned off on both imacs) and just over wifi (with the ethernet cable disconnected).
    I'm a but frustrated right now, I was hoping to easily get my old files / setup over to my iMac as soon as possible.
    Anyone here with a similar issue, or how to best approach this ?

    Attempting to use Migration Assistant from older Macbook pro to a new one. When connected by ethernet or firewire, Migration Assistant crashes before it starts. When just wifi, it slows down, initially stating 4 hours, then 5, then 6.....
    what's the trick here?

    Solution: Shut down old computer. Boot holding down the T key, to boot into target disk mode. Then connect via firewire to new computer and the old computer appears as a volume and you can migrate from there.

  • I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on external drive.  I'd like to migrate only the internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive then just plug in iPhoto library drive.  Is this going be a problem?

    I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

    Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
    You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password. 
    Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

    Hi there,
    I'm having issues restoring a harddrive using migration assistant to import a TimeMachine backup.
    I've just reinstalled Mac OS X 10.5.8 onto a Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 2GB RAM.
    I've done all updates and repaired permissions on bootable drive and repaired the external disk where the TimeMachine is stored.
    The TimeMachine is stored on an external harddrive with USB2.0 connection.
    I can load Migration Assistant, select migrate from TimeMachine, but when the import users screen appears after 40 seconds or so Migration Assistant crashes.

    It seems that my Migration Assistant crashes routinely after 40 seconds (or so) no matter which options you select (if any). Even if I leave the app searching for user accounts on the Time Machine it crashes.
    If I'm quick i'll be able to deselect all users except admin, or if I'm slow I won't get so far. No matter what, it still crashes.
    Oh, it hadn't sunk in that it was crashing before you make selections. Now that I re-read your first post, I see you did say that, sorry.

    No, it won't. You can only select or omit them.
    I don't know whether you have a problem with your Mac or the backups.
    You mentioned earlier that you'd done a +*Repair Disk+* on the TM drive, so if there's a problem with them, it's something DU can't fix.
    Have you done a +*Verify Disk+* on your internal HD? If not, make sure it's ok.
    If so, something may be amiss with the +Migration Assistant+ app. I'd suggest downloading and installing the "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

  • IMac won't boot to OS 9, boots Panther fine

    Bought an iMac G3/500/128MB/CD-RW off Ebay for super cheap (this is the Indigo 500 with 64MB base RAM). Loaded OS 10.3.3 with no probs, tested it out with no probs. (I know the 128MB RAM is less than recommended/required for Panther, the machine was supposed to have 256MB and the seller is sending that to me). Next step was to load OS 9.1 from the CD. The iMac won't boot from the OS 9.1 CD (It boots fine from the Panther CD). Also tried booting from a firewire CD drive, same result. The result is a folder with a question mark, then a folder with a smily face, repeated twice before it aborts the OS 9 boot and goes into Panther.
    Repaired permissions, no luck, wiped Panther off the drive and tried booting to OS 9 with blank drive, and still no luck.
    As stated above, the machine was supposed to have 256MB RAM, and it also has a 20GB HD when it was supposed to have a 30GB HD. I declined a new HD as the seller offered me $20 as an option (bringing the total shipped down to $69.00), but now I'm wondering if I should replace the HD with the 30GB he offered? I don't think it's an HD issue though and replacing it looks like more trouble than it's worth.
    I'm not too bummed if I have to stick to Panther, I just have a few OS 9 apps that I'd like to have access to.

    Does the CD drive boot from the Panther installation disk? I'm wondering if the CD drive is faulty, and it's not a Mac OS 9 specific issue.
    Also, in combination with that problem, the hard drive may have been partitioned without the Mac OS 9 drivers. If you haven't tried already, use Disk Utility to partition the drive. You can keep it at one partition, but be sure that the "Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed" check box is installed. [NOTE: partitioning will wipe the drive clean.]
    Other than that, I don't have a clue...
    If you can't boot directly from Mac OS 9, most "classic" apps will run fine under Mac OS X in the "Classic" environment. If that works, it's actually a better way to access to Mac OS 9 programs.

    My iMac won't boot past grey screen with apple. I've tried booting in safemode but that didn't help and my iMac didn't come with a os x disk.

    Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.   
    There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
    If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use either of the techniques in Steps 1b and 1c to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
    Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
    If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
    If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
    Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
    If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 10. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
    If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
    If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
    Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
    This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
    Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 10
    Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 11
    This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 12
    If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • IMac won't boot up after latest update. Any suggestions?

    I just updated my software (the latest from apple), then my iMac won't boot again.

    There you go. Your HDD is failing hence its not booting. You need reformat the HDD
    To reformat, same steps: Boot to the install disc > get past the language selection > You will see Welcome to Blah Blah Blah > just hit continue > There should be something there called erase and install
    BUT
    1. if you are absolutely sure that Time machine has BACKED-UP all of your files then proceed above
    2. If not, if you have another mac: connect it via firewire then google Target Disk mode. Basically you want to copy all your files from the damaged machine to the new mac to serve as a backup
    3. if yo dont have another mac: get an external HDD, install Mac os X on it, boot to it then back up your files
    to do this
    a) Plug external HDD
    b) Boot to the CD restart and hold C
    c) Get past language selection and keep hitting continue
    d) when it asks you where you want to install Mac os X > select the external HDD
    e) once its installed. Restart the computer and hold "Option" key. You should now see your external HDD as one of the boot drives. Select that and you'll boot into it
    f) once inside the external HDD OS, you will see the internal HDD(damaged drive)browse/navigate through it and start getting your important files

  • IMAC won't boot with USB card reader attached

    My quite new 24" iMAC won't boot if I have a USB card reader attached:
    I get to the white screen with the apple logo, but it gets stuck there and the little spinning gear below the apple logo never appears (I've waited several minutes). (In all my test cases, there is no card in the card reader.)
    I've tried two different card readers with the same results ("iDOTconnect" brand and a brand new Apacer unit, both are USB2.0 multi-format card readers).
    The 1st one I tried via a USB hub, the second one I tried via a new hub and also directly connected to the mac (both of those hubs work fine).
    Anyone have any ideas?

    The same thing can also happen with other connected devices such as external HD's and iPods, the Startup Manager is lost and searching for a boot volume.
    1. You may be able to fix it by going to: *System Preference / Startup Disk* and select the *Mac OS X 10.5.5 on Macintosh HD* then *Click the lock to prevent further changes.*
    2. Leave those devices that cause boot issues disconnected until the iMac is up and running!
    3. Only sleep the iMac, and be sure to disconnect those devices be for shutting down or updates that require a restart!
    As a habit, I have always ejected and disconnected all mounted USB devices (flash driver, iPods, cameras, card reader, etc.) from my hub be for sleeping, restarting or shutting down...

  • Migrating Data to New iMac

    I am unable to migrate data andsettings from my old iBook G4 to m new iMac.
    I am using Migration Assistant. The iBook restarts in target disk mode without problem.
    The iMac, however, doesn't seem to recognize the iBook as a mounted disk. Migration Assistant on the iMac has the "Continue" button on the "Restart Your Old Mac" window grayed out.
    Both computers are running 10.4.10.
    All cables except the firewire and the iMac keyboard are disconnected from the computers.
    I've tried restarting the iMac after the iBook goes into target disk mode but still encounter the same problem.
    Since the iBook goes into target disk mode without problem, this doesn't seem like an "Open Firmware Password" proble.
    I've read articles 58583 and 2333 but didn't find anything there to explain or solve the problem.

    I signed up for the 60 day free trial of .mac and synched my address book/mail/calendar settings and my Safari bookmark through that. Mail still has to go through the process of "learning" what is junk mail, but other than that everything came across fine. After you sign up for .mac, go to System Preferences on your OLD computer and pick .mac in the Internet/Network pane. When that comes up the second choice in the bar across the top is SYNC. Go there and pick addresses, bookmarks... whatever. Click sync and your info goes out onto their servers in the sky. Next log into .mac on you NEW computer and go to System Preferences and sync the same selections in .mac there. The info should pass on to your new computer.
    It's been long enough since I did this that I may be leaving out a minor detail but it was really easy and pretty fool-proof. I think it asked me which direction I wanted to save information so that I didn't accidentally wipe out my OLD computer with the blank data from the NEW computer.

  • How can I retrieve my files when my iMac won't boot?

    My iMac won't boot up, which may be related to a recent update to Mavericks. I've tried repairing the disk from the DVD startup - it finds invalid volume file counts and says it's repaired them, but the same thing happens when I try to boot, the screen goes dark, the cursor is still visible and movable, but that's it. Foolishly, I didn't make a back-up so I'm now trying to retrieve some files at least. Using disk utility I've been able to copy everything to an external drive but I still can't get access to the files because it won't boot from there either, same old volume errors turn up when I try to repair it. Will I have to buy another mac just to access the files?

    Assuming you are running OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), try booting into your Recovery HD by pressing/holding Command+R at startup. When you see the OS X Utilities Menu, plug in a USB external drive with an empty partition. Select Reinstall OS X from the menu and install Mavericks to you external drive. After the install is completed, your system should boot to your external drive to completed Setup. You might be able to use your internal iMac drive and Setup Assistant to bring over you User accounts and Apps to the external.
