Migration assistant did not recover my mail even though it is there

My iMac Power supply failed a few days ago and I decided to migrate my important data to my MacBook Pro until I get my iMac back. Both machines have been running Mavericks for a while and are up to date with the latest everything.
I used Migration Assistant and selected the iMac backup. Then selected to migrate my apps and data and documents.
Everything copied across beautifully EXCEPT all my mails in the mailboxes. All the mailboxes (on my mac) copied across, but all are empty.
Now the crazy part.
When I select "Browse other backup disks" and select the iMac backup (while in Mail), it goes into TM and shows the latest backup being July 8th and a number of previous dates, but they are all empty. Yet when I mount the Sparsebundle, I can see the data.
Also one time I tried entering TM from mail, it actually showed me all the data under the "Now" link on the right and I could see all the files that are supposedly missing. Yet the "Recover" button is disabled. Of course that is expected as I would not want to recover what I have. But the fact that I can see them in TM but not in normal Mail is crazy.
Even more sinister is that the files all exist in the ~/library\mail folder.
I then tried importing them by pointing to them. It says it has imported them within about a second and gives me a new location to view them, but that folder does not exist - or at least show - in mail.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
Peter

  • Mail migration assistant did not upload old messages in inbox during upgrad

The mail migration assistant did not upload the contents of old messages stored in my inbox for mail in panther to tiger. It uploaded drafts and sent mail messages and even the husks of the messages themselves into the new inbox but not their contents, not the information contained in the messages themselves. I see that the old messages are accessible via spotlight but only their external identification remains in the new inbox, not what was in them. Is their anyway to rerun mail migration assistant or the mail setup assistant (whatever it may be called) so that it uploads all of messages from my old inbox under panther to the new inbox under tiger? I believe that while running initaially soon after I launched mail for the first time under tiger, the migration assistant for mail quit early, maybe because I had many messages stored in my inbox.
So my basic question is, is it possible to rerun the program that migrates mail from the old inbox under panther to the new inbox under tiger? If it's not, is it possible to first of all empty out the current inbox with its group of the external skeletal remains of messages but lacking their substance, the information contained in them, and then refill my current inbox with the entirety of the message, i.e., not just its identifying information, its external identification (from whom and about what), but also what the message at one time contained? In each of these messages it only has this bit of information: "The message from 'such and such a sender' with 'such and such a subject' has not downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." But of course I am online. The online bit I supose the message is about is the being online with the migration assistant, and that's the being online I would really like to go back to I suppose, before it seems to me this mail migration assistant quit on me prematurely, without uploading or downloading, whatever the term, the entire content of my inbox with its batch of received messages. In the process, it did, however, capture the entirety of my drafts and sent messages from their particular boxes.
Please help. How can I redo the migration step from panther mail inbox to tiger mail inbox so that my mail is in its inbox and reachable there as opposed to apparently being searchable by only spotlight?
    Thank you.

I am having a similar problem. I just upgraded from 10.2.8 to 10.4.3. It didn't go well (a USB peripheral interfered)and I ended up upgrading while archiving users.
There was no 'restore users opportunity'. I have done a lot manually, which is painful...in fact reminiscent of why I don't like PC's. Anyway, I was able to locate and restore almost all the mailboxes, including a bunch of deleted files from the 'Previous Systems' folders. I still haven't found the secret location of all the email that was in the "Inbox".
I would greatly appreciate it if someone in the know could share where and how to restore my old inbox so I can get my important emails back. Hacking or magic software...what ever it takes.
    Thanks

  • HT3231 trouble migrating certificates. Migration assistant did not migrate them

    There are two Problems.
    1. Migration assistant while migrating somehow did not migrate certificates. Im not sure if all are not migrated or this specific digital certificate for my identity issues by a legitimate CA
    2. When I try to manually export and later import, these Certificates and keys, they still don't work.
    Here is what I'm doing
    - I just replaced an SSD in place of HHD (was called MacintoshHD) where OSX (mountain Lion) was installed. I ofcourse created a recovery disk / USB and later on re-installed OSX on the new SSD through Recovery
    - next I used migration assistant to migrate my old user and files etc.
    - all seemed well, until, I landed on a local website, where the login is through my digital certificate. This certificate was missing. Seems migration assitant did not do its job well.

  • Migration assistant did not transfer my files from pc to my mac, even though it says it did

When i used the migration assistant to transfer my files from my pc to mac, it seems i could not find any of my files. it said it transferred successfully, but nothing shows up on my mac. I did it twice? what else do i need to do?

    You followed this:

  • Migration Assistant did not transfer my network or computer settings as I expected. Do I have to manually reconfigure all my laptop settings after an erase of the hard drive and reload of the OS?

Snow Leopard (10.6.8) became corrupted resulting in not being able to shut down my 1/2007 Intel Core 2 Duo MacBookPro and not being able to download numerous programs and updates. I backed-up my laptop, took it into the Apple Store where they wiped the hard disc clean and reloaded the OS. They suggested I use Migration Assistant to restore my backed up information to my laptop, but ALL of my settings from Desktop, to the Dock, to Finder, to screen savers, to Safari bookmarks, to all of my Mail inboxes, archives and smart email boxes, and to Documents and all of my files and their organization, to iTunes, to Address Book, to Calendar are GONE.
Do I need to do some more formal kind of a restore from my back-up drive to recover/restore this information and "get my laptop back" or is it all lost?

When a newly installed Mac is started up the first time, Setup Assistant runs for that only time and can migrate everything over, including user accounts. Later on, Migration Assistant can migrate some of the stuff but not all, since the computer already has a config and data on it that MA can't overwrite.
If you reinstall SL again, wiping the HDD, SA will run at first start one more time and can do the full migration from the backup.

  • After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external back-up? Following Apple advice for use of Migration Assistant did not work creating similar issues leading to clean install.

After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external hard drive?
Following Apple advice I used Migration Assistant which crashed new system twice which is why I had to clean install Lion in the first place.
Is there a sure way of doing it?
I have only a few programs that I will have to install myself and that should not be a problem.
I just want my data, music and photos back where I can use them.

Time machine backups. I went to migration assistant a few hours ago and limited my selection to "users", no need for applications, settings and other files.  Stuff started moving over at a fast pace but has now seemed to stall.
I will let it run overnight as there are lots of songs and photos as well as a few movies.
If that does not work, then I will go into TM and try restore. I have restored some things in the past such a mail files and it has worked well.
The Apple fellow at the store told me to go right into TM, he may have had a point. I'll get it eventually.

  • Migration Assistant did not move user, now Keychains by the old user

There are a lot of posts about migrating to Leopard but I didn't find this particular issue:
I used the Migration Assistant after finishing the installation on my new MacBook (10.5.6). I set it to move one user account, software, documents and everything else (save networking preferences) from my old PowerBook G4 (10.4.11).
Instead of moving the user, it moved everything from that user and put it under a user on the new MacBook. That is to say, it did not create a new user on my new machine which would have had the name of the old user. Now everything is there and seems to work fine, but the Keys still carry the name of old user.
Has something gone wrong or is that the normal way fro Migration Assistant to do things? Is there a problem having the Keys under a different name from the user name?
(I noticed that when I first put Migration Assistant to work during the installation process, it did move entire users, so that the user account would be identical with the old machine in my new machine. However, due to problems relating to Intel and non-intel software I had to reinstall the system, after which I proceded according to what I explained above.)

I have been using a Mac for twenty years because I considered it simple. But if one has to resort to procedures like described in the link you provided, one might as well use a PC...
That's interesting. I, too, have been using Macs for 20 years, and I found the procedure moving from PPC Mac to Intel to be very helpful. I had a very smooth transition, and I feel right at home on my new Intel Mac. Everything is exactly where it was on my Pismo, and it's great. Incidentally, I once thought of getting a PC and my youngest daughter, whom I raised on a Mac, scolded me soundly

  • Migration Assistant did not move my iTunes correctly how to I fix this?

I recently purchased a MacBookAir and wanted to use Migration Assistant to move or copy all of my documents, files, pictures and music to the new Mac from my old MacBookPro (2007) running Mountain Lion.  Migration Assistant was most incomplete.  I used the commercial brand of Drop Box to move my iTunes; but, when the files arrived, iTunes could not find the correct itl.  I have messed with it long enough to get the files visable on iTunes 11.3; but, cannot play any music, as it says it cannot find the original.  I have used the Apple Support suggestions of moving library.xml to the Desktop then deleting the current libray.itl; but that has failed to re-establish a new library file.
Am thinking about trying to re-transfer my old iTunes from the Pro to the Air with the Mac's internal drop box via wify.  Any other ideas on this?

Thanks for your response.  Yes, I tried Migration Assistant and found it severely lacking, as it didn't really migrate more than about 15% of my files and folders.  Trying the commercial Drop Box got more stuff copied/moved; but, wouldn't hold all my photos.  It moved the music folder; but, when accessing I had no playlists and only what had been purchased directly from iTunes.  So, I am using what Limnos told me and am awaiting the final results; but am hopeful.
I will let you both know what all occurred when the dust settles and I hear "tunes" coming from my surround sound system.
    Thanks again for the response.

  • I upgraded to 31.3.0 and now can not receive e-mails, even though I can send them.

Have used Thunderbird for years, but have not been able to receive e-mails for two days since the upgrade. Able to send e-mails, but not receive. Tried deleting e-mails for last few days on server and on Thunderbird, but no change. Tried deleting saved password on Thunderbird, but it only asked for new password when sending e-mail, but does not ask for password for receiving. Tried re-installing Thunderbird, but no e-mails received.

I solved the problem by changing Account Settings / Server Setting changed the port to 995 (default was 110) and the security to SSL. (Not sure how the upgrade changed these settings).

  • I'm attempting to transfer files, address book, etc from an external hard drive to my new Mac-mini using migration assistant.  The external drive is showing up on my desktop but Migration Assistant is not seeing the drive when searching for devices

I'm attempting to migrate files, address book, maile, etc to my new Mac Mini using an external hard drive and Migration assistant.  I followed the instructions on using Migration Assistant to do this but Migration Assistant is not seeing the external drive, which is displayed on my desktop

I've been chasing this problem all afternoon. I had to reformat my internal drive on my MBP and reinstall Mountain Lion   Start up assistant wouldn't see my extrnal drive with the Time Machine files on it.  After many tries, I skipped the restore there and let the system boot.  I could see my external drive from Finder and the files looked OK.  I was told to use Migration Assistant and it had the same problem.
I saw a hint on one of these posts that the icon that you see and is label Macintosh HD is actually your backup disk and it is telling you that it has a copy of your internal Macintosh HD.  I went ahead and told it to continue and it started to restore my apps, settings, and documents.  It's been going for a couple of hours, and is close to being done.  I expect to see my old system restored when it is finished.
Wish that Apple would put some type of note that it is seeing the backup. That is most confusing and seems to be a problem for lots of users.
It's been a month or so since your post  Did your get it to work?

  • Migration assistant does not see my time machine disk

I had an issue with my hard disk on my imac in which I had to re-format and reinstall the OS. Since 10.7 is not available as a "rescue reinstall disk", I had to reinstall 10.6. When that finished, the install asked if I would like to transfer my stuff from Time Machine. I said "yes". Unfortunately, my time machine disk does not show up! Migration Assistant thinks my "macintosh HD" system disk is the only disk available as the time machine backup. So I skipped migration. I went ahead and did all of the OS upgrades to get back to 10.7.3. I re-connected all external disks (I have 4-the time machine disk included) and tried migration assistant again. The only disk migration assistant still thinks is available as the time machine backup is the macintosh HD system disk, not the one called "Time Machine Backup". Time machine backup is a western digital 2TB usb 2.0 disk.
    So....
I decided this morning to re-do everything again (since I still could not get my data back). Guess what?!?! the same thing is happening! Migration Assistant thinks that the macintosh HD is the time machine disk and does not see any others - even though the disk is there and mounted!
Please help! I would like my data back, but I am not able to pay Apple at the Apple store or a phone call to them for help!
    Thanks!

Those are your backups.  Migration Assistant shows the name of the disk and system that were backed-up, not the disk they're on.  It will not show the disk you're running from.
See the tan box in Using Migration Assistant on Lion.

  • HT204350 Migration Assistant is NOT working

Migration Assistant is NOT working - Have tried from from a hard disk and using the Thunderbolt cable.  Keeps Looking for Source.
Any ideas?  I really want to more on to my new Mac.

That the Migration Assistant doesn't work is a KNOWN ISSUE.  Last week I got a new iMac and the old and new couldn't find one another.  I called tech support 3 times and spent I don't know how long on the phone.  They finally suggested I take them both to an Apple store, which I did today.  The Genius knew all about it - said it's a known issue.  To "resolve" it he started the old iMac in "disk mode" and then the new one could see it, but that wasn't an adequate fix: After spending over an hour moving the files, they wouldn't have been in their proper folders.  I would have had to manually file 6 years worth of pics and files!  NFW - I returned the new computer and will make do with my old one until Apple gets this right.

  • Migration Assistant does not find My Passport

I have a new macbook Air that I used at work. I would like to have it synchronized with my personal macbook pro. If it is not possible to have them constantly synchronized, I would like at least to migrate to the macbook air the latest backup of my macbook pro that is in my time machine (my passport).
Migration Assistant does not recognize the time machine even if it is plugged in. How can I let migration assistant find it?
Thank you for any information you may provide me!

I'm having this exact problem myself. I click on the option in Migration Assistant that says I want to transfer data from an external source. After clicking "continue," it just hangs forever. I can see the external drive on my desktop. Any suggestions?

I've been checking my email via webmail for a week and am back in the office today. Fired up Thunderbird, expecting it to pick up all my email, but it gets nothing and tells me…
Sending of password for user [email protected] did not succeed. Mail server pop.ipower.com responded: Not enough disk space
Haven't seen this particular error message come up in searches via google and at mozilla. There's definitely disk space on my machine. I'm running TB on a Mac (OSX 10.6.8). Disk Space options under Preferences > Advanced let me assign up to 1024 mb for the cache, which I've done, and cleared.
Has anyone encountered this before? Got a solve/troubleshooting process? Thanks!

Thanks. I do compact regularly (TB prompts me to) and did it (several times) via Preferences today to try and get TB past this error message.
Also went thru and Trashed + Empty Trashed as many messages as possible from the inbox, just in case. Still no-go.
