Migration Assistant/FireWire problems.... I'm not sure which
I've searched through many of the posts on this subject and I've not found anything similar so I thought that I'd try posting the question.
My lovely wife just bought me a new iMac for my birthday to replace my very old and very abused (also read... incredibly slow iBook G4). I didn't do MA when I first booted it up as I didn't own a FireWire then.
I just bought a FireWire yesterday, plugged it in to both computers and brought up the MA program. It seemed to recognize that that a computer was connected to the other end as it told me to reboot it into "FireWire" mode. I did that and then it never could hook up to the computer again. I've attempted it many different ways and times.
Frankly I'm at the end of my rope and I've been transferring files via BlueTooth just to get some of my old stuff on the new machine.
Hopefully, this is an easy problem for someone out there.

I would say one of the symptoms is just as you've said, it basically times out forever.

8_1_5_0_0.exe downloaded from this site, OTN sent me the free CD-
ROM version, along with Oracle8i disk set for Windows NT (sic!).

1) I unzipped using oa2owiz-8_1_5_0_0.exe FROM THE CD (does

I first unzipped to my Oracle install directory, so

FROM THE CD into the suggested default: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP. Both

on my machine with the products.jar file that was just
unzipped. When I hit 'Next' I get:
"Invalid staging are. There are no top level components for
Windows 98 available to install from this staging area."
FWIW: The above message message would appear, after the install
thermometer appeared briefly, if I used the full path to
the .jar, for instance C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\products.jar.
If I omitted the file name, I wouldn't even get the thermometer,
and the (sooner appearing-no thermometer) message was:
"There was a problem opening the staging area.
Please make sure the 'Source' you have specified is valid."
Am I doing something wrong?

The Oracle Migration Assistant for MS Access is not supported and
thus not installable under Windows 98.
It is only installable under Windows NT and Windows 95.

Migration assistant unusual problem
Hey guys,
So I bought a refurb 2011 15' mbp recently and i was trying to transfer files from my 2008 aluminum macbook running lion (10.7.4). Because migration assistant told me it could not transfer files from my old computer (which was running newer software) to my new 15' pro I set up the new mbp, updated the software and then got my free download of mountain lion. After that was done I connected the two computers via ethernet and ran migration assistant. Everything went well, the files transferred (I moved every file including my user account) but at the very end it told me that there was a file that couldn't be transferred (it was something like Error: 2012 Firstname Lastname --> my user account 8-5-2012 - 00000011 was not compatible). On my old computer it did not display any error messages, according to it my files had transferred successfully. When I logged back into the admin account on my NEW computer, it looked like only the applications and some pictures made it through. No documents, media or settings. Migration assistant DID NOT create a separate account on my new computer but the odd thing is that when I looked up the disk space available on my NEW computer it showed that the HD had been filled with something but it was classifed as "other" (under about this mac --> available storage). What do you guys think went wrong and is there anything I can do to fix it without wiping the HD and starting over? Thanks!RickAu wrote:

This setup should just be using a Firewire cable connected between the two Macs, with the iMac running Migration Assistant & the other Mac in FireWire target disk mode. Networking connections & devices like Airport, Time Capsule, routers, etc. should have nothing to do with it.
For this setup, make sure you choose the Migration Assistant option to transfer data 'From a Time Machine backup or other disk' & not either of the options that mention a Mac on a network. Before you start Migration Assistant, put the other Mac in target mode & make sure it shows up in Finder. -
I hope you can help me. I purchased adobe captivate 8 on line and when I click on the email link to download, it comes up with 7 programs, some are 64 bit and some are not, my computer is 32 bit. I am not sure which of these 7 to download? All or just the 4 non 64 bit?
I tracked down the problem with the download and installation, my windows 7 was missing a file and after reinstalling windows everything worked out. The first 32 bit program in their list was used. I hope this can help others.

When I view my ipohotos on my mac air that have been uploaded from my iphone, sometimes my computer just shuts down. It is when I have the iphoto open. I'm not sure which version this is...I bought the computer about four months ago.

I have downloaded every update and my battery life is better than any previous iPhone I have ever owned. I see posts from hundreds of people every day, and this is not a commonly reported problem. While there are a few random reports of battery problems, it is no more than I have seen for any other model or any other version of iOS in almost 8 years. The simple test is to restore the phone as New. Do not create any email accounts. Do not install any apps. Do not enable FaceTime or iMessage. Do not enable Twitter or any other social networking app. Use it for a day and check the battery usage. You will find that it is working well.

Not sure which direction I should be heading
I'm going to drop a lot of money on equipment sometime during the next six months, and I'm really not sure which direction I should take this. As I see it I could either go with everything hardware, or I could go with Mainstage. Basically, what I want is to get the sound of me and my keyboardist up to snuff, as it's currently not that great.
What I'm thinking of getting for now:
Hardware route:
Nord Electro 73
a magically great guitarfx
Software route:
Mainstage
M-Audio Profire 2626
Midi foot controller
Macbook Pro 3,06GHz 4GB RAM
As you can see, the Mainstage route will be more expensive. At the same time it will offer more flexibility, and the ability for more bandmates to join in in the future.
Keyboardist will use the following sounds:
- Piano
- Rhodes w/ effects
- B3
- Clavinet
- Solina
- Strings
- (Maybe some C64 SID-sounds)
I guess that's it for now.
Guitarist (me) will use:
- Overdrive
- Amp simulator
- Delay (I know this takes a lot of processing power, so only one or two delay-fx simultaneously.)
- Other, typical guitar-fx.
If I go hardware I'll go with a multi-fx, but I have yet to find any that will let me tap the tempo on one patch and then keep that tempo when I go to the next patch, so they get kind of limited.
We will both be playing at the same time, and latency is important. I want to use it at 16bit/44,1KHz, as I guess that's the lowest I can go. I want to be able to play with 32 sample buffer. At 64 samples the latency gets too long. I guess I could get used to it, but the day I try to run my bassist or other guitarist og lead vocals or backing vocals through Mainstage I don't want to have to excuse the latency.
Is it stable enough? I plan on using the computer as a Mainstage-only laptop, not installing anything except Mainstage and maybe a few plugins. It'll normally not be connected to the internet, with Airport turned off.
There's probably a lot of stuff I've forgot to mention, that I might think of later, but the main question is; which route would you go in my situation? Hardware or software?

I've been running one keyboardist and a backingtrack loaded into exs24 and have had one problem during a show that required a reboot.
EXS24 stopped playing a backing track twice as well - which was pretty major.
I'll be using playback for backing tracks and will not be sending my guitar through the computer. We will also have a drummer playing now, so if the computer breaks, we'll lose keyboards and will be able to continue on and end a song.
I think it's an acceptable risk for the flexibility and cost savings - since I already had a laptop and all the midi gear. And I try to accept a bit of glitchyness as it's a new program. Hopefully that will be changing over the next few months - as this latest version seems more stable and updates should add to that.
If I were a major act playing large shows, *I would not be using it*. And if it continues to cause problems, we'll be looking for something else.
I used the logic environment for our last band. We had three keyboards for three separate people - that worked pretty much flawlessly. -
my acct. shows that I have 5 authorized computers for my itunes acct. not sure which 5 but I do know it is not my new laptop. our main home computer that I use for managing and adding to my music library may have crashed . so I deauthorized all 5 computers (that was my only choice). I was then hoping to authorize just one computer (my new lap top), I was then hoping that my entire music library would then show up via my itunes/apple account where is it ?

I have an old verison of itunes(not sure which one) and if I download the new version 11.1.4, will I retain my original library and playlists from the old version or loose it?

First; let me say that I did search for the answer to this, but I'm not sure which way to go with a lot of the answers. I'm sorry I'm asking this question for the umpteenth time. Yes; I'm one of those that understands enough about computers to make me dangerous...
Our computers are set up on a home network. Before I got my iPod last year, we ripped all our CDs and saved them on a completely separate external drive named "M" (for music), so all 3 computers could have access to the information on the M drive.
I get my pod & have the office computer set up to be the 'main' iTunes location, since we purchased a USB2 hub for it. I quickly learned how to direct iTunes to 'pull' the music from the M file & understand how all that works. Life is good. I even took the time to put an album art file on the M drive & insterted everything into iTunes by 'hand'.
Bless my hubby's heart. Completely filled with computer envy, he just purchased me a brand spanking new shiney computer. Needless to say, with all these new bells and whistles, I can now use my computer as the 'home base' for all things iPod/iTunes instead of having to go downstairs to do updates, etc.
I looked up & printed out "How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer" from the Apple web site, which basically says to download everything onto my iPod's harddrive & do the transfer on the new machine.
I think what I'm trying to ask, is since all the music is located on an external drive:
When I download iTunes to iPod harddrive, are all the tags still in place? Will all the album art be correct, so when I download it onto the new computer, everything will be identical to what's on the old computer?

Is there another trick I can do to have everthing the same on the new computer?

Am I better off just having my computer go to the M drive & upload all the music onto my new computer & reload all the album art by hand again?
My real hesitation on this method is I have a lot of things on the M drive that I changed the tags on in iTunes, & I would really hate to go & search through everything again & redo what tags I can find wrong.
I know that this may sound like a lot of trivial questions, but with over 6,000 tracks, I'd really like the process to go as smoothly as possible.
And once again; I'm sorry if this seems like just another 'how do I transfer' question. As I was reading the search results, I didn't notice anything that dealt with external drives being involved & I don't know if any of that makes a differance or not in all of this.

I converted some songs in iTunes to work with an eMusic device. I'd like to delete them, but I'm not sure which of the duplicated songs to delete. Some titles are black and some are gray.
let's just doublecheck some things quickly. do any of the affected songs play in itunes at the moment? if so, when you play them, do they ask to be authorised?
if so, does the authorisation go through successfully, or do you get an error message? (if you get an error message, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)
if the authorisation seems to go through successfully, with the authorised songs sync to the ipod? -

So what? The second-hand shop you bought it from didn't follow the right procedures. You also didn't follow the right procedures to make sure that iPhone was not in Activation Lock. It's like buying a car for cash but not getting the title signed over to you. It's not your car if you don' have the title. And that's not legally your iPhone if the previous owner's Apple ID is still registered to the device for Find My iPhone/Activation Lock.
Only a proof of purchase from the ORIGINAL retail store would do any good at all. Return the device to where you bought it and demand your money back. If they refuse, either get a lawyer and/or turn in the device to local police. If you're in possession of stolen property, then the cops won't care about where you got it from. -

Windows 7 is not a computer, its an operating system. It can be an excellent computer rivaling a Mac or be bargain basement offering outdone by even the most modest Mac.
Laptop or Desktop? Large screen or small? Features? Price range?
So without any real context there's no way to say what you should or should not buy. Or what that Windows 7 computer can do currently, so as to suggest a similar offering from Apple. -

Just as the subject states, I'm on an asus k53sd with a nvidia geforce 610m gpu and I'm not sure which drivers to install. I believe nvidia from the official repo is a necessary one but what else? There was also an intel based driver but I need to edit in what was since I can't remember.
Last edited by cj360 (2013-10-21 22:37:21)a GTX 610M is definitely not a legacy card. The 9800GT is, but yours definitely isn't. My laptop has a 480M, and still will be supported by the main drivers for a while. Even the 280 is still supported well in the latest drivers.
You are very likely using Optimus as pointed out by circleface. Especially as you mentionned using an Intel driver, I'm pretty sure you are on an Optimus laptop (like they almost all are since the past 3-4 years). Read this: Optimus and this Bumblebee. You need a special configuration to have it work, involving optirun and prismrun.
You probably don't really need nvidia-xconfig especially if using Bumblebee. I think it does that by itself when it starts so you don't need to configure the hidden xorg server.
