Migration assistant form a Firewire drive back to a MBP

Hi
My MBP has been returned for a replacement (3rd Time) and I have made a complete clone of the hard drive with on a fire wire drive. I would like to know if I can use migration assistant to transfer my details using the firewire drive. I don't want to do a complete system transfer, but only my settings etc like migration assistant does it. I cannot loose e-mails and reinstall everything this time round again...
Please advise.
Regards
Mike

If you made a clone of the drive, why not just clone it back on the repaired MBP. That way you would be sure all your files, settings etc. are on your new computer. The Migration Assistant will miss some files. I frequently lose monitor profiles and many apps, such Adobe CS, are broken by MA and need to be reinstalled.

Can I do Migration Assistant w/ a Firewire from one mac to the other?

  • Migration Assistant finds external hard drive but says it has 0 kb in profile

I'm trying to transfer all my stuff from one MacBook to a Macbook Pro. I have been saving Time Machine back ups on an external hard drive for a few years on the original MacBook, running 10.6. I know it has been backing up properly because all of the files are there when I browse the backups folder.
When I go to Migration Assistant on the MacBook Pro and choose back up from Time Machine or other disk, Migration Assistant recognizes the external hard drive, but when I click through, it shows my user profile and says it has 0.0 kb in it. Also says 0.0 kb for Apps and Documents / Files.
If I do Mac to Mac transfer through Wifi, it finds the entire profile and all of the files. That takes too long, though, and I thought the purpose of having my stuff on a hard drive was to make this process really easy.
Appreciate any help anyone can give me about getting this to work right. Thanks.

I did this just yesterday yesterday. I put a new disk into a G4 iMac, installed a fresh copy of Tiger on it and then migrated the user folders across from the old drive that I put in a firewire enclosure. Obviously if you go for an Intel Mac then you will have to be careful with the applications.

  • Migration Assistant with External Hard Drive

Can the Migration Assistant be used with an external hard drive which has a complete install of OS X on it?
I am finally upgrading my old iMac for a new iMac. I plan on harvesting the old iMac's 60 GB drive and put it in an external enclosure for added storage. Though the old one's firewire ports work fine, I thought it might be easier to migrate the old iMac's settings from the "new" external drive rather than going through the targeted disk mode and all.
    Thanks for any opinions,

  • Migration Assistant not displaying relevant drive

I purchased a 1TB SATA internal HD for my Mac Pro tower last night, with the intention of making it my start up disc. Currently I have a 500GB HD in bay 1 of 4, with a secondary internal drive in bay 2. I put the new 1 TB into bay 3, slid the carrier shut, and launched Disc Utility and formatted the disc, no problem. I then launched Migration Assistant, with the intention of copying over all of my files from my 500GB current start up disc, over to the new 1 TB drive in bay 3. Afterwards, I was going to put the 1 TB drive into bay 1. Upon launching Migration Assistant, here is the first prompt that came up with two radio button choices:
HOW DO YOU WANT TO TRANSFER YOUR INFORMATION?
    • From another Mac, PC, Time Machine backup, or other disk?
Transfer information to this Mac from another Mac or PC on the same network, a backup disc, or another startup disc.
    • To another Mac
Transfer information to another Mac on the same network
I selected the first radio button (top bulleted item above). I was then prompted to provide my password by M.A. When I did so, another window popped up with two more radio button choices:
HOW DO YOU WANT TO TRANSFER YOUR INFORMATION?
    • From another Mac or PC
Transfer information to this Mac from another Mac connected to it, or from another Mac or PC on the same network.
    • From a Time Machine backup or other disk
Transfer information to this Mac from a back disk or another startup disk
Wanting to copy data over from my current startup disc, I selected the second radio button.
When I did so, the only choice I had was HD 2, which I didn't want, or a Time Machine backup of my startup disc (HD1) which was done too long ago to make it a currently relevant.
The big question is, after an hour of waiting for all the drives to be scanned, why wasn't the startup disc (HD1) offered on the list to choose from, instead of just the Time machine backup version of that same disc?
Would placing the new 1 TB drive into bay 1 instead of bay 3 solve the problem?
    Thanks, Carl
    p.s. Using Lion 10.7.1

    Thanks again, John.
While I was waiting for another reply, I tried something I had heard about that seems to have worked. I rebooted into Lion's Recovery Disc. I then launched Disc Utility and selected the Restore tab. The resulting window gives you a source disc field and a receiving disc field. I just selected the existing 500 GB startup as my source and my new 1TB drive as the receiver and hit restore. It copied file for file the entire contents over to my new drive in about an hour and a half. I renamed it HD 1, dropped it into bay 1, renamed HD 1 as HD 2 moved that into bay 2, and so on with the last internal drive. I set the startup disc in my Pref Panes as the new "HD 1".  It started up and remembered my username and password. So far, so good. Why do I get the feeling there's another shoe to drop? Maybe it's just my paranoia.

  • I'm attempting to transfer files, address book, etc from an external hard drive to my new Mac-mini using migration assistant.  The external drive is showing up on my desktop but Migration Assistant is not seeing the drive when searching for devices

I'm attempting to migrate files, address book, maile, etc to my new Mac Mini using an external hard drive and Migration assistant.  I followed the instructions on using Migration Assistant to do this but Migration Assistant is not seeing the external drive, which is displayed on my desktop

I've been chasing this problem all afternoon. I had to reformat my internal drive on my MBP and reinstall Mountain Lion   Start up assistant wouldn't see my extrnal drive with the Time Machine files on it.  After many tries, I skipped the restore there and let the system boot.  I could see my external drive from Finder and the files looked OK.  I was told to use Migration Assistant and it had the same problem.
I saw a hint on one of these posts that the icon that you see and is label Macintosh HD is actually your backup disk and it is telling you that it has a copy of your internal Macintosh HD.  I went ahead and told it to continue and it started to restore my apps, settings, and documents.  It's been going for a couple of hours, and is close to being done.  I expect to see my old system restored when it is finished.
Wish that Apple would put some type of note that it is seeing the backup. That is most confusing and seems to be a problem for lots of users.
It's been a month or so since your post  Did your get it to work?

  • Forms Migration Assistant - Forms Path?

    Hi,
I'm hoping somebody can help me. I'm attempting to use the Forms Migration Assistant and I'm having problems getting it to recognise attached libraries etc. Is there some sort of path that I can set to tell it where to look? I'm using 10gR2 developer suite and I'm using the assistant in wizard mode. I have tried setting the forms path in the registry and in the default.env file but this doesn't seem to make any difference. The only time I have had this working is if I modify the shortcut to the assistant to "Start in" the same folder as all of the libraries and forms which is less than ideal for our situation.
    Thanks in advance.

For anybody else that comes across this problem. Apparently, the regular forms_path should be picked up by the migration assistant however there is a bug with the GUI version of the tool that prevents this from happening. If you use the command line version then apparently the tool works fine.
However, if like me you intend to use the GUI version you can manually edit the frmplsqlconv.bat file to include your forms_path. There is a metalink note about this, the doc id is 454053.1

  • Can migration assistant install on two drives?

I am purchasing a new Mac Pro to replace my G5, and would like to use Migration Assistant to move everything. However, I am also considering for the new machine a SSD drive for boot, with everything else on a hard drive. Is it possible to have Migration Assistant move just the OS and apps to one drive, and everything else to a second drive? If possible, would I be playing with fire . Thanks.

Not easily. Both +Setup Assistant+ and the similar +Migration Assistant+ will only transfer to the volume you're running from.
Your best bet may be to use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer your apps and most user accounts and data to the SSD (perhaps omitting some large folders).
See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups? or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum.
Then either move some large things to the HD, or use Time Machine to restore the things you didn't transfer there (you'd need the +*Browse ...+* option, per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions, and restore to an alternate location, per #16 there).
Another option would be to transfer just an account and default folders to the SSD, copy the home folder to the HD, then use Time Machine to restore the other folders there.
Once everything's there, change the account location via System Preferences > Accounts: click the padlock to make changes, enter your Admin password, then right-click the account you want to move, select +Advanced Options+ and change the +Home directory.+ Do this very carefully, of course!

  • Migration assistant using up hard drive?

I recently got a new imac 24in with 320 GB hard drive . I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data and files from my old imac . My old imac had an 80 GB hard drive and had 20 GB free. My new imac (after the transfer) says I only have 206 GB free. How have I already used up over 114 GB of hard drive space when my old system only needed 60 GB? I really only wanted my iphoto library, itunes music and some saved documents. What should I do to recover some disc space?
    Thanks.

This is down to a combination of several factors:Hard Disk Manufacturers. Who list hard disks in decimal notation rather than binary (and data is stored in binary).
    (320 x 10003) / 10243 = 298.02GB
File System. The HFS+ file system takes up a small about of space, this is the way the computer looks up where to find data on the disk.
Software. Around 16 - 20GB is taken up with Leopard itself, iLife 08 (especially GarageBand), iWork trial etc etc.
So your iMac does hold 320GB but some of it has already been used. This is the same on any and every computer that you buy, it perhaps more obvious on new large hard disks. If does seem like you should have a few more GB free though so download Whatsize (link) to easily examine where that space is.

  • Using an external drive with migration assistant

I have used disk utility to clone the hard drive on my defective MacBook to a Maxtor external drive.

Thanks, would I choose "From another Mac" or "From another Volume in this Mac" under Migration Method?

  • Links and Migration Assistant from the Time Machine

I have a MacBook Pro with one internal hard disk and two external Firewire hard disks.
The first external hard disk is the Time Machine back up disk.
The second external hard disk is the target for my recovery efforts.
    The is how it went:
    1. Erase the second external hard disk writing zeros to it.
    2. Did a Time Machine volume restore from the first external hard disk to the second.
    3. The Time Machine crashed gloriously within 2 minutes, and 0.7% of the files restored.
This is a small portion of the crash log report:

The target hard disk is unusable.
    4. Erased the target disk and wrote zeros to it.
    5. Used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy a plain Leopard image.
    6. Used Migration Assistant to get my users, applications, etc. to migrate from Time Machine.
I chose all the options to migrate data and settings.
    7. The reason to use Migration Assistant to get the data from Time Machine was because I suspected that the Time Machine backup might be corrupted. (The volume restore fails every single time.) I was trying to see if Migration Assistant would also crash. My reasoning was that a successful Migration Assistant would not prove anything, a crash would point to corruption in the Time Machine backup.
    8. I booted from my internal hard drive and so far I've found the three weirdness:
    a. A password stored by Safari reverts to an old value.
    b. iTunes shows me the License Agreement to Agree/Disagree.
    c. QuickTimePro registration is blanked out.
    So, the question is:
*Did Migration Assistant modify my internal drive because of links?*
    Roberto Sepulveda

    Stefano,
    1. Boot from the Leopard installation disc by pressing the letter C while doing a restart.
    2. Choose the language.
    3. Click on Utilities on the Menu bar.
    4. Select Restore System from Time Machine.
    5. Select which Time Machine backup is the source for the restore
    6. Select which disk is the target for the restore
    a. Consider that the restore may fail leaving your target volume unusable
    b. Consider that the restore will rename the target volume to the name of the source volume,
so you might end up with duplicate names.
    Hope this helps.

  • Migration Assistant 'Less than 1 minute remaining' Solution

    Hi all..
I have been reading the problems people have been having regarding Migration Assistant and the dreaded 'Less Than 1 Minute Remaining' screen than never goes away and I found a solution for it so you don't have to go through all that!
I recently upgraded my 24" Late 2008 iMac to a new 27" iMac and wanted to bring all my files over to the new machine as most of it is photos and Final Cut Pro plus related editing software!
I did the whole connecting both macs up on the same network and even connected the ethernet cable for faster transfer but after hours of showing promise,  it hung up on 1 minute to go.  After leaving it for 4 hours, I gave up but here is the best way to do a hassle free transfer.
Back up all the files on your old machine to a hard drive in Time Machine form.  I had 320 gigs to do so it may take 4 hours or so to do the back up.
when this is done, disconnect the drive from the old machine.  On the new machine, connect the hard drive, open Migration assistant in Utilities and select BACK UP FROM TIME MACHINE!
Mine took about 1 hr 40 mins to complete and it works like a dream.
    Sincerely hope this helps people

Press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly to restart. Test. If the migration wasn't successful, see below.
    1. Migration may stall with "Sharing Only" user accounts
    2. Back up the old system with Time Machine or Disk Utility and try migrating from the backup.

  • Problems with Migration Assistant ..... G3 iMac to G4 iBook

I've run into problems in using the Migration Assistant and a FireWire cable to transfer the data files I had accumulated on an old G3 iMac (running on OS 10.3.9) to a new G4 iBook (running on OS 10.4.6). The cable connection and following the steps of the Assistant went just fine. I instructed the Assistant to transfer the data files but not the applications. However, when the process was all done (according to the Assistant):
    (a) there were no instructions for finishing up and disconnecting the FireWire cable, so after looking around and finding nothing, I just disconnected the cable and immediately lost the orange iMac hard drive icon from the desktop of the iBook (and, from what I can tell, all of the data files that I thought had been transferred); and
    (b) I then discovered that none of the data files that I thought had been transferred to the iBook are there, but all of the applications are there .... i.e., the exact opposite of the instructions I had entered. What now remains in the hard drive of the iBook are an empty Desktop Folder (labeled that it had been transferred from the iMac) and a new System Folder (similarly labeled) containing all of the applications that had been on the iMac.
Thinking that I must have made an error of some sort, I went back and re-ran the entire procedure again. However, I got exactly the same result.
So now, how do I get rid of all the applications that came over from the iMac? Can I just drag that one folder to the Trash? Or have they all been installed and now I need to uninstall them? And if so, how do I do this?
And how do I get the data files over from the iMac to the iBook?
My heartfelt thanks to anyone who can help me undo this mess!

Open the Users folder on your hard disk and see if there are any folders inside that folder with red circles; if so, that is where your data files may be. Log out and then in from the account you migrated; if you're not sure what username and password to use, open the Accounts pane of System Preferences and check or change the settings there. Once done, move the files you want to transfer to the /Users/Shared/ folder and from there to your normal account's home folder when logged in to that account. Once you've moved over everything you want, you can delete the migrated account. The applications that were migrated can be deleted.

  • Migration Assistant just did everything that I didn't want it to do

I backed up my MBP running Lion to an external drive and formatted the MBP and installed Mavericks. I wanted a clean start and for it to run better, it was having problems.
I just used Migration Assistant to transfer my data back. I only slected to transfer Desktop and Documents from the TM backup.
    1. I received a message at the end of the transfer that Flip4Mac was not compatible with my OS. I did not select to transfer applications. I wanted to have a fresh harddrive without copying over problems. Why was this copied over? Was it copied to one of the old user accounts or to my main one?
    2. It created 2 new user accounts on my Mac, even though I only had one selected in Migration Assistant, the one that had the Desktop and Documents that I wanted to copy over. I don't want these old user accounts.
    3. All of the files from desktop and documents are now in another/older user account. How can I transfer them to the main account I want to use?
    4. Can I just delete the other user accounts that it created? Will it also delete any applications and any other files that it copied over that I do not want?
    Thanks in advance!

1.) So anything that was copied over, are ONLY contained in those other two useraccounts that it copied over so if I delete them it will remove everything that it copied over?
If you only selected to copy the user accounts, yes.
2.) Are you suggesting that I delete those accounts and the data in them and do it all over again?
If you want to but you wrote, "I don't want these old user accounts".
3.) What should I do if the old account was Media Fred and the new one is Media Fred? I can not change the name of Media Fred? How do I transfer everything into this account?
Create a new account (Fred - Admin or something).
Log out and log back into Fred - Admin.
    Delete the other accounts.
Run Migration Assistant and select Media Fred to migrate.
After it's done, log out and log into Media Fred and it will be as it was on the old computer.
4.) Would it be easier to just drag the folders from the TM backup to my account on the new MBP? Are there issues with doing it this way?
Migration Asistant is much simpler and there won't be any issues.
You still need to create the user accounts then drag and this usually ends up with lotsa permissions errors (easily fixed) nd other stuffI've never had success doing it without a bunch of cleanup. Not worth the time.
