Migration Assistant froze - Did data transfer?

I purchased a new MacBook Pro and was using Migration Assistant to transfer the data.  I was letting it run overnight and someone in my home unplugged the source Mac.  When I got up and plugged the source Mac back in, both of them said "transferring supporting files for applications" and that there was less than a minute remaining.  After waiting for an hour, I stopped (canceled) MA on the source computer.
My primary question at this time is .... Did any data transfer at all to the new Macbook?

Additional Info...  The reason for my main question is that I purchased the smaller hard drive on the new MacBook and am considering (if no data actually transfered) going back and getting the one with the larger hard drive.

  • Using Migration Assistant to Move Data Files from one Account to New User

Is it possible or recommended to use Migration Assistant to move data files from an old user account to a new user account on the same volume/hard disk?

Migration Assitant cannot be used as a simple file transfer utility. MA can transfer an entire Home folder or entire Users folder but not individual files.
In general files in one user account cannot be moved to another user account as this would violate built-in security measures.
What you can do is to copy the files to an external device like a hard drive or flash drive. First log in to the old account. Then configure the drive to ignore preferences by Pressing COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and check the Ignore permissions on this volume checkbox at the bottom of the window. Copy your files to the device. Log into the new account. Verify the external drive is still configured to ignore permissions (reset it, if not.) Copy the files from the external device into the Home folder of the new account. I would create a temporary folder for these files. If you still end up without the proper permissions you will need to make modifications that are easier done if all the files are in a single folder.

  • I used Migration Assistant to copy data to an new MacBook Pro from an old via my Time Capsule. When asked if to inherit time machine history on the new Mac, I mistakenly said no. How do I go back one step to say yes?

There isn't enough space on the Time Capsule to create a separate backup of the data on the new MacBook. And I am reluctant to delete old backups of the old MacBook to create space to backup the new machine. This occurred about 3 weeks ago so the data on the two machines are now out of sync. If I start over by formatting the new MacBook and rerunning Migration Assistant to pull data from the Time Capsule, how do i preserve the last 3 weeks of data on the new MacBook, considering that I didn't keep track of which files changed in the last 3 weeks?

All the rest of the stuff is where it should be.  As best I can tell. I have been going through my programs one at a time to see what works.  With the change in the OS (Launchpad? What the heck?) I am finding a significant number of my old programs are not working. Some I have found upgrades.  But without a working mail program, the machine is pretty useless for work.
The Apple techies had me run through 3 hours of 'stuff' (holding down keys and restarting, etc, etc).  It still does not launch. I think we are waiting for a 'miracle', but I need to know now if they should just come get this piece of junk or if they really are able to find a solution in a timely manner.

Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode
Hello, I am having problems migrating data from my old PC running XP (SP3) to my new Mac Pro 2012 using the Migration Assistant.
    - I downloaded and installed the Windows Migration Assistant from Apple
    - My Mac recognized PC and displays passcode
    - The sasscode does not show / display on my PC
    - My Mac is then stuck in "authenticating" loop and the PC is stuck "waiting for Mac to connect."
    - Both computers are connected on same network (have connected PC on WIFI and using ethernet to Reuter)
I have looked on support site and only response I saw says to reinstall Windows Migration Assistant (which I have done)
Any ideas?  If cant get this to workare there instructions for manually bring across relevant data eg itunes music and apps, photos, picasa data etc?

Why not turn off the Windows firewall and uninstall any other firewall software you have installed?
If you are using a Norton product uninstall it and discard it. To fully unistall most Norton products you have to go to the Norton website and download a soecial program to completely get rid of it. The normal uninstall feature built into the program will not remove all of it.

I used the Migration Assistant to move data from my Time Machine to my new Mac.   Most data seems to have been transferred successfully but none of my iPhoto pictures have been transferred.
My Time Machine now shows the earliest available Back-up to be after the Migration Date.   My iPhoto pictures seem to have either been lost in the migration process or are locked in my Time Machine prior to the earliest back-up date now accessible.
Any advice on recovering my old iPhoto pictures would be greatly appreciated.

First go to iPhoto Preferences, look in both General and Advanced tabs to make sure that things are set to import from camera into iPhoto.
Then if that doesn't help, connect the camera and open Image Capture in your Applications > Utilities folder and see if you can use Image Capture to reset the import path from the camera to iPhoto.

  • MIgration assistant does not allow transfer of data from OS 10.5.8 to OS 10.7.4, MIgration assistant does not allow transfer of data from OS 10.5.8 to OS 10.7.4

    hi
I have a G5 quad processor machine and am trying to transfer data from this to a new Mac Mini server running 107.4...
Migration assistant open on both computers
both using latest software versions and connested with ethernet across a functioning network.
can browse the discs of both computers.. each computer can see the other
The newer computer cannot link to the older one iwht migration assistant.... the older one cannot see the newer one in mgration assistant
    what to do now?

After Lion was released, Apple released an update to Migration Assistant for 10.6.8 and 10.5.8 systems, which is required to do some types of migration to Lion. (That update was in August 2011.)
Had you installed that update on your G5? It should have been offered via Software Update.
If in doubt, you can download the Leopard version here and install it manually.
If it still doesn't work, your next option would be to try migrating via a Firewire cable instead of using Ethernet. This would involve running Migration or Setup Assistant on the new computer, and starting up the old computer in Firewire Target Mode. (Migration or Setup Assistant provides detailed instructions after you choose Firewire as the migration method.)
A possibly related issue: is the G5 running Mac OS X Server? I've never tried using Migration Assistant to migrate a server, so I don't know whether that might have additional issues to deal with.

  • Migration Assistant just did everything that I didn't want it to do

I backed up my MBP running Lion to an external drive and formatted the MBP and installed Mavericks. I wanted a clean start and for it to run better, it was having problems.
I just used Migration Assistant to transfer my data back. I only slected to transfer Desktop and Documents from the TM backup.
    1. I received a message at the end of the transfer that Flip4Mac was not compatible with my OS. I did not select to transfer applications. I wanted to have a fresh harddrive without copying over problems. Why was this copied over? Was it copied to one of the old user accounts or to my main one?
    2. It created 2 new user accounts on my Mac, even though I only had one selected in Migration Assistant, the one that had the Desktop and Documents that I wanted to copy over. I don't want these old user accounts.
    3. All of the files from desktop and documents are now in another/older user account. How can I transfer them to the main account I want to use?
    4. Can I just delete the other user accounts that it created? Will it also delete any applications and any other files that it copied over that I do not want?
    Thanks in advance!

1.) So anything that was copied over, are ONLY contained in those other two useraccounts that it copied over so if I delete them it will remove everything that it copied over?
If you only selected to copy the user accounts, yes.
2.) Are you suggesting that I delete those accounts and the data in them and do it all over again?
If you want to but you wrote, "I don't want these old user accounts".
3.) What should I do if the old account was Media Fred and the new one is Media Fred? I can not change the name of Media Fred? How do I transfer everything into this account?
Create a new account (Fred - Admin or something).
Log out and log back into Fred - Admin.
    Delete the other accounts.
Run Migration Assistant and select Media Fred to migrate.
After it's done, log out and log into Media Fred and it will be as it was on the old computer.
4.) Would it be easier to just drag the folders from the TM backup to my account on the new MBP? Are there issues with doing it this way?
Migration Asistant is much simpler and there won't be any issues.
You still need to create the user accounts then drag and this usually ends up with lotsa permissions errors (easily fixed) nd other stuffI've never had success doing it without a bunch of cleanup. Not worth the time.

  • I need some help with Migration Assistant for transferring data

I would like to transfer selected items from my iMac (G4) to a new MacBook Pro using Migration Assistant, Can I selectively choose things to transfer? And are there any problems going from a G4 to an Intel-based machine? I'm mostly interested in transferring iPhoto photos and music from iTunes.

Migrating data other than your home folder may replace Intel components with PowerPC ones on the MacBook Pro, which will cause slow performance. Dragging over applications manually by restarting the old Mac with the T key held down and then placing them in the new Mac's Applications folder will work with many applications, but not all; any applications for which this doesn't work will need to be reinstalled.

  • How to use Migration Assistant when trying to transfer from MacBook to a new iMac via Ethernet cable

I've been trying to transfer data from my MacBook to my new iMac via Ethernet cable and I get to the point of the transfer starting. Then on my iMac the Migration Assistant shuts down and takes me back to my desktop. Any ideas on why this keeps happening?

Start over, restoring the OS on the new machine, and follow the steps outlined in  Pondini's Setup New Mac guide using the Setup Assistant.

  • Migration assistant and time/date

I just used the Migration Assistant to transfer over all data/apps/settings from my old MacBookPro to a new one. I noticed that the time on the new machine was off by 5 hours (ahead). I checked the settings and they were how I had them on the old laptop. I don't have "set date and time automatically" selected and my time zone is set to Brazil, where I live. At the moment I'm in the US, but as I don't have it to set automatically I don't understand why the time is being set to Brazil. This didn't happen with my old laptop ... running the same OS and with the same settings. Any ideas?

I found the answer. The way to access the earlier backups is to boot from the 10.6 install DVD while the Time Machine drive is attached. Choose the primary language, but then instead of proceeding with an install and using the transfer near the end, go immediately to the Utility menu and choose Restore From Time Machine. It will display the Time Machine Drive and allow you to choose a backup by date.

  • Migration Assistant froze, no response

I got a new MacBook Pro today and tried to use Migration Assistant to get all the stuff from my old Powerbook G4 15" 10.4.11. They established connection and new one got information from the old one but i never even got to touch the "transfer" button when the new one froze and since then the rainbow thingie has been going on. I disconnected all the cables (I used the enthernet cable) so the old one turned into normal again and works fine but the new one is still frozen, does not turn off nor does ctrlaltesc.
    What should I do???

Force quit it using the power button. Review Best Practices and Setup new Mac, boot with the install disc, reinstall, and on first boot, try again, but use a FireWire cable instead. If the problem persists, call AppleCare and get it fixed or replaced.

  • Run windows migration assistant on laptop to transfer files to new iMac

Would there be too many firewalls or virus protection to not allow the migration assistant to deploy... it's loaded on my Win. 7 laptop, but won't run so i can transfer files to my new imac. Thankyou for any suggestions.

  • Help!  Macbook Pro stuck with the spinning wheel after Migration Assistant froze.

I have a Macbook Pro and a Mac Mini both running OSX (latest version).  I was trying to the do the Migration Assistant and it froze on the Macbook Pro and I can't even shut off my laptop.  Any tips would be wonderful!!

If it was purchased brand new then it's running a version of Lion, so to reinstall Lion:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.

  • Migration assistant froze half way through me setting up my new MacBook and i can't reboot it?

I'm trying to set up my MacBook Pro but my internet connection is pretty dodgy so i was half way through transferring my files with the migration assistant when on my PC it came up with an error message. I restarted it on the PC, only there is no option to restart it on the Mac so I'm not sure what to do now. Help?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The only method to close Migration Assistant now is to hold the Power button until the computer turns off, and then, turn it on again. Maybe some of the files you wanted to transfer aren't on the MacBook, so you will have to start Migration Assistant again

  • Apple Store did Data Transfer to new Mach.  Do I need to do Boot Camp all over again to run my Paralles/Windows?

    HI.
In May, I used Boot Camp to partition my MacBookPro and then installed Parallels and Windows.  Worked great!
Two weeks later my MBP died.
In order to save my students projects which I'd saved that week on my book (yup, without backing up daily) they did a data transfer for me to my new MBP and I left the store without crying over lost work!
Now however, when I click on my Paralles Icon it won't work.  I get this:
I'm not sure what to do or how to get this working again!

no you did not do it throught boot camp
boot camp is when you start up your computer and hold down option and choose for it to not start osx at all but start windows insted
what you were doing was running virutal machine using parallel which just happened to rather then load it image from a file read it from the boot camp parition
unless you ever held down the option key and started windows windows without osx
then you have always run it as a virtuel machine just from a location which was skipped by your backup system
so you kinda cheated yourself first of all then it's more trouble to install windows under bootcamp then in a virtual machine
and when in bootcamp then as you've seen is not a part of a backup
