Migration Assistant Funny Behaviour

Hi:
I have a brand new quad core 2.66 GHz with 4 GB factory RAM, running OS 10.6.2. I am trying to migrate the files from my 10 yo G4 867MHz PPC onto it. I have a FW 800 to 400 cable connecting the two machines. The HD from the PPC shows up on my new desktop (after I start in target mode), yet only one of the 5 user accounts on the old machine shows up when I directly examine the disk icon. I ran migration assistant, and it only brought over one user account, and even for that one it left most of the files behind.
What am I doing wrong? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Problem solved. I have two internal HDs on my PPC. The one Firewire Target Mode was talking to must be the master PATA drive, even tho I have the other larger and newer drive as my boot drive. I found this text on an Apple support site: "Note: FireWire Target Disk Mode works on internal PATA or SATA drives only. Target Disk Mode only connects to the master PATA drive on the Ultra ATA bus. It will not connect to Slave ATA, ATAPI, or SCSI drives." I had an old copy of one user account on the Master drive, so that explains why it copied one account but not the others, and why the account it copied was not up to date. It's all so obvious in retrospect!
Given all this, I got Migration Assistant to run by using SuperDuper to make a bootable copy of my PPC onto an external HD using FireWire, then connected this drive to my Intel Quad core, and then all went well.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's the classic behaviour after using Migration Assistant and that's normal.
To transfer the data from the new user account to your old user account, you can follow some steps. Here is all the information you need to do this > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472

  • Time machine backup on external firewire drive is not seen by restore or migration assistant

    Hi,
today the harddrive on my Aluminium iMac gave up the ghost. I have been backing up my system using time machine, so I wished to restore it. To my great annoyance I found that neither the restore option in Lion's installer nor the migration assistant after install allows me to select that drive!!!
I have checked the drive, it's ok. I connected it to another Mac, it can read it just fine. Why the **** is it not appearing in the list of available backups?!

    Hi Bob,
I would like it to appear along with the time capsule it self under shared, so when I click on the time capsule I would see two drives the time capsule and right below or above the hard drive. and I would like to be able to see it in the airport utility under disks under the time capsule in the drive screen, but the drive is not visible in either locations.
yes I have read many places that the drive need external power supply, as this drive is quite large 1,5 tb I did take one with external power supply. I do however have two other drives one 500 gb and one 750 gb without external power supply and they both work perfectly on my time capsule "plug and play" like it is supposed to, funny enough one of these drives do have the partition master scheme as master boot record even as I have seen several discussions where it is stated this would not work. on these new drives I have tried with the three different partition master schemes I have tried with mac OS extended formatting as well as FAT 32 formatting, I even formatted the drives on a windows machine to see. but it still do not appear when it is connected to my time capsule. Before my time capsule get the blame for this I have to add that I have tried on two other time capsules - though in other environments - with the same result.
so please any new idea is very appreciated.

  • Permissions problem after using Migration Assistant - unable to copy files

I have a PowerBook G4 and 2 iMac G5 desktops - one iMac at home and one at work. I've had the iMac at home and the PowerBook for a while. The iMac at work is one I've just inherited from another user. Both are exactly the same model - 2Ghz iMac G5 (ambient light sensor). All 3 machines are running Mac OS X 10.4.6.
I decided to use Migration Assistant to transfer my Admin user account on the PowerBook to my work iMac G5, all of which worked great. So I now have an exact copy of the user folder from my PowerBook on my work iMac G5, and consequently the same combination of username/password.
When I mount the drive from my PowerBook on my work iMac via AFP I can copy files from the PowerBook to the iMac. But if I try to copy the file back to the PowerBook I receive the error "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items". The file does appear on the PowerBook, but it is 0K and therefore useless.
Worse, if I'm replacing a file on the PowerBook, I get the usual "An item named "blah" already exists in this location..." dialog. If I click Yes to replace the file it is wiped, but then the permission error pops up leaving me with a 0K file on the PowerBook and no original.
If I mount the work iMac drive on my PowerBook I see exactly the same issue - i.e. I can copy to the local machine from the mounted drive. But I cannot copy anything back without receiving the permissions error.
My home iMac G5 was not set up using migration assistant, but I do use exactly the same combination of username/password. It does not exhibit the same behaviour. I can mount the PowerBook drive on the home iMac and happily copy files back and forth with no permission errors at all. And the same if I mount the home iMac drive on the PowerBook - no problems.
So I'm guessing that this behaviour is a result of using Migration Assistant to create the user account on my work iMac. If I log into another account on my work iMac, mount the PowerBook drive and copy a file to the PowerBook it works fine. The problem only occurs in the account created by Migration Assistant.
Does anyone know how to resolve this, short of having to create a new user account on the work iMac and move all my files from one account to the other?

    Hi,
you need to adjust the permissions for the files on your harddrive.
I think you have serveral users in different groups that may result a permission conflict.
    - Put or copy your files you want to to a new folder.
    - Use this tool, its easy to use for ppl that are not familiar with unix permission setup over the terminal: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6440
    - give all files recursively all permissions (for testing) (777, owner, group, others)
    - then test the copy procedure
    this should help

  • Migration Assistant Problem in Mountain Lion

I just purchased a Mac Mini Server (i7 quad core with 16GB memory and 2 750GB drives).  The machine seems to work well and is quite fast.  My problem is when I try to migrate everything off of my Macbook Air 13" using Migration Assistant.  With both computers (Mac OS X 10.8) connected to the same LAN segment (either wired or by 802.11n) and apparently talking on the LAN properly (no packet loss on pinging the host router), I follow the on-screen propmts for MA and the source computer is found.  When I start the migration though, I consistently get a dialogue on the "to" machine (Mac Mini) that states that the MacBook has "stopped responding" and the whole process hangs up.  Exiting the MA apps on both sides reveals that each machine appears to work normally on the network with no indication of LAN communication issues.  Has anyone seen this behaviour or have any practical solutions to suggest?
    John

Use Disk Utility on both to Verify the Drives, what does it report?

  • Backup not visible in Time Capsule using Migration Assistant

I have just bought a new MacBook Air and would like to migrate a large amount of data to it sourced from my iMac. The simplest way appears to be (or should be) to use the Time Capsule. However, Migration Assistant cannot see the backup of my iMac (which runs Mavericks). It can see the backup of my wife's MacBook (running Snow Leopard).
When I first started, Migration Assistant did briefly display the backup of my iMac but would not let me access it, saying (something like) it was in use by another computer. Since then I have tried all sort of tricks, including switching time machine off on the iMac, disconnecting from the Time Capsule and so on. I have also run Disk Utility and repaired the volume. None of this has made a difference to the problem with Migration Assistant, but I have also been in & out of Time Machine (the 'Star Wars view') on the iMac in the process, and noticed that it is erratic in terms of whether or not it displays my previous backups.
An obvious solution to setting up the MBA will be to get hold of an appropriate cable to migrate files directly from the iMac. However I am now a bit concerned about the erratic behaviour of Time Machine on the iMac and it feels as though I ought to solve that problem as well rather than ignore it.
I have spent a bit of time looking at other discussions here and have not found any answers, although I think I can rule out this explanation: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5125969?tstart=0 - as I have checked and TM does indeed seem to be backing up my Library etc.
I'd be grateful for any advice.
    Thanks

It is sadly what we find.. that Mavericks just doesn't do Time Machine as reliably as it should.. but the issue could be network.
How were you backing up the iMac before you got the TC? If you had a USB drive plugged in and used that, then plug that USB drive into the MBA and that will probably work a lot better.. it eliminates the network part of the issue at least.
TM does work better to local drives.
Otherwise then I have a few steps for you to try and get access to the iMac backup on the TC.
    Mostly you won't like them.
    1. Full factory reset. This will not mess with your backups.. ie nothing is deleted but you will have to reset TM to point it to the right place.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    2. When you redo the setup of the TC, use only names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. For everything.
Even the computers really should have share names that also met that.
    3. Manually mount the TC in the MBA,
In Finder use the top menu Go, and Connect to Server.
    by typing,
AFP://TCname.local (where TCname is your new short name. local is the default domain)
You can use AFP://TCIPaddress (where TCIPaddress is the actual IP of the TC. eg by default in router mode, 10.0.1.1 you would type AFP://10.0.1.1)
The computer will ask for the password when it finds the network resources of the TC. type that in, public by default but the utility forces you to change it now.
Don't forget to save this password in your keychain.
With the TC now correctly mounted, attempt again to migrate the data. When you migrate do not use the same user name as you used on the iMac.. that will cause a mess.. it is better to have a different name.. that you are logged in under. See the info in pondini.
    http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
Follow all his instructions.. although the guy who wrote it died before Mavericks was widely available, most of what he wrote here should apply.
Just one more thing I forgot.. ipv6 must be set correctly to link-local .. do not leave it on automatic.
So for example in wireless on the computer.
If you use ethernet on the iMac also set it on ethernet advanced settings.

  • Migration Assistant - Windows Outlook 2007 subfolders not transferred

When using Lion Migration Assistant, Outlook subfolders did not migrate (only inbox).
How can I migrate all other subfolders (1.5GB)?

Thanks for the reply.  Funny, when I got through to a senior person he told me that I had had an anomolous experience and that WMA should have transferred everything.  I also found that all of the files that WMA had transferred had their dates changed to the transfer date--a circumstance that he again said was not the intended result and was not the common experience.  Sigh.
I too backed up and did the migration manually.  Contacts and calendar were the easiest since I'm already on MobileMe (score one for cloud computing).  And yes I did what you did and converted my POP email history to IMAP, so the migration was via the ISP and I'm now permanently in the cloud on that too.
Apple is so good on some things and so bad on others.  They really don't like exceptions and they really don't like to communicate with users.  But (after 5 days of work) I'm finally happily on my Mac, so ... we'll see.
Thanks again for taking time to reply.

  • Migration Assistant fails - calculates user size as a large negative number

I have a recurring problem that has prevented me from successfully using Migration Assistant to move my user account from my old computer to my new computer (since 3 computers ago, but definitely still a problem with my freshly updated Tiger machine).
The problem that I have seems to be that something about my user account makes the size in "Step 1 of 4: Pick Users To Transfer To This Machine" say that my user's size is "-53673944.7 GB"
At the bottom of the same screen it says "Space Remaining: 53673968.3 GB" and "Selected Items: -53673925.1" -- so it clearly is making some kind of horrible math error and then propagating it through all it's calculations.
Everything on "Step 2 of 4..." seems to be normal, and in fact the MA worked fine to move everything but my user account over.
When I arrive at "Step 4 of 4..." the "Migrate" button is always greyed out if I have my user account selected in step 1, which doesn't actually make sense, since right on the page it says I have over 51 petabytes free and will benefit by gaining some additional space after migrating. (Perhaps there is some last minute sanity check that does not simply involve subtraction and a test for greater-than-zero).
I'd really like to be able to migrate... what could I possible have in my home directory that would cause this? I certainly have some symbolic links scattered around, but those should really not be followed... has anyone seen any behaviour like this before? Does anyone at Apple care that there is obviously a serious bug with the Migration Assistant (although clearly only in some special situation)?

Surprisingly, it let me run Disk Utility from the original factory MBP install DVD!
I was able to click "Repair Disk" and it displayed lines of info in the window. One of the lines it outputted was in red and said,
"Exceeded recommended limit of 100 nested folders".
I found this site -- http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=28421 -- then ran this in Terminal -- *sudo find / -mindepth 100* -- and it outputted page after page of lines for my flight simulator, FlightGear.app.
Here's one example line that Terminal found...
    /Applications/FlightGear.app/Contents/Resources/data/Aircraft/FlightGear.app/Con tents/Resources/data/Aircraft/
    FlightGear.app/Contents/Resources/data/Aircraft/FlightGear.app/Contents/Resource s/data/Aircraft/FlightGear.app/Contents/Resources/data/Aircraft/

  • After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external back-up? Following Apple advice for use of Migration Assistant did not work creating similar issues leading to clean install.

After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external hard drive?
Following Apple advice I used Migration Assistant which crashed new system twice which is why I had to clean install Lion in the first place.
Is there a sure way of doing it?
I have only a few programs that I will have to install myself and that should not be a problem.
I just want my data, music and photos back where I can use them.

Time machine backups. I went to migration assistant a few hours ago and limited my selection to "users", no need for applications, settings and other files.  Stuff started moving over at a fast pace but has now seemed to stall.
I will let it run overnight as there are lots of songs and photos as well as a few movies.
If that does not work, then I will go into TM and try restore. I have restored some things in the past such a mail files and it has worked well.
The Apple fellow at the store told me to go right into TM, he may have had a point. I'll get it eventually.

  • I transferred data from my external hard drive to my restored Mac Book Pro via migration assistant and now my external hard drive in time capsule has red minus signs. How do I get rid of that without getting rid of any of my data?

I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my external hard drive via Time Capsule to my restored Mac Book Pro. When I now go into Time Capsule I there are red minus signs in the corner of all the folders that are contained in my back up. How do I get rid of this and access my previous back-ups?

Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to copy the entire folder, then change it's permissions.

  • Migration assistant stopped working and has left me with 100gb in 'other'? How do I delete 'other' and what is it exactly?

I recently invested $2000 (one week ago) in a Macbook Pro Retina 2014 2.8ghz 512gb. Dont get me wrong, I am in love with my product and am extremely satisfied but I have honestly encountered nothing but issues.
My first issue was the transferring of data from my 2010 white macbook 500gb. Both laptops have Yosemite installed and are 100% up to date but I have spent the last week getting them to talk to each other. I am not new to the workings of Apple but I have never endeavoured to use applications such as airdrop, migration assisstant or even bluetooth.
My first attempt was to transfer 200gb of files (Photos mainly, I'm a photographer) to my other laptop via a 64gb USB in segments. But after an hour and only 10gb getting copied across, I decided other alternatives may be of more help.
That is when I came to my first dilemma: AIRDROP. Airdrop is crazy. Yes I did click the option on my retina to search for older macs and yes they did connect. I can send files from my MBR to my white macbook 2010 immediately but my old macbook will not send files to my retina. Yes all of the necessary sharing settings are in place - both MacBooks have the same settings selected so I cannot figure out what to do. Information on this subject would also be helpful yet it is not the end of my troubles.
    Second Issue: Migration Assistant.
So yesterday I discovered this little 'gem'. I am a very impatient person so you can imagine i did not appreciate 20 hours of file transfers (via wifi as i do not have a thunderbolt to ethernet adaptor for MBR). Anyway that's all well and good if it actually worked. But of course it did not. I followed apples instructions and I was down to my final 4 hours this morning when my MBR told me the connection was lost and to reconnect. It was making the loudest whirring noise like air coming from inside the hard drive or something. I freaked out. My $2000 machine should not be doing this. It was only a little bit warm; not hot but it was incredibly loud, I'm not sure how to describe it. Keep in mind this computer is brand new so please tell me: WHAT WAS THE SOUND?!?!?!?! AND WHY? what was wrong? what could I have possibly done wrong? My wifi WAS working because my desktop PC was connected. So i waited and waited. Of course I couldn't actually do anything without quitting airdrop and in the end that's just what I had to do. A lot of time wasted for such an unsuccessful cause.
That brings me to my final issue:
So after migration had.... "completed" or crashed or whatever you want to call it, I at least assumed some of the files had maybe copied over and i could just resume from where I left off last time somehow. Oh how stupid that assumption was. My user account did in fact copy over but not a single file copied. And yes, I did log into that user account to check. ANYWAY, I went onto "about this mac" to see my storage info (still being optimistic about my wasted 20 hours). SURPRISE SURPRISE: Yet another problem. I now have 100gb in "other". This macbook is brand new. I should not have any GB in other. I am so incredibly annoyed. HOW DO I DELETE OTHER?! (preferably without downloading software) and is there anything else of importance in other that i should be careful not to delete that is contained within other?
I am only 15 years old  and this was a massive investment for me so I treat my Macbook like a baby. And no, I'm not spoilt by my parents. I had to work at Subway for a year to earn $2000 - without spending a single cent (My wage is only $9.00AUD an hour so i essentially worked some 222 hours for this macbook). And I'm not crazy, I needed it for school.
Anyway I'm not impressed with apple. I have Applecare but they aren't open on the weekends or whenever I try to call so that hasn't exactly been helpful. PLEASE HELP ME.

Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the page that opens.
In the keychain list, an item named "System" should be listed. If it isn't, select File ▹ Add Keychain from the menu bar and add the following:
    /Library/Keychains/System.keychain
Now search in Keychain Access for the name of the wireless network (not the name of the router.) Double-click one of the items and check the box labeled Show password in the inspector window. You'll be prompted for your keychain password to confirm. Make a note of the network password. Then delete every "AirPort Network Password" in the search results. Quit Keychain Access.
Go back to the Network preference pane and recreate the Wi-Fi connection with the same settings as before. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.

Migration Assistant has been running since yesterday evening.  My Dell is now telling me that its trying to reconnect to my Mac and to ensure they are both using the same network.  I have an Ethernet cable plugged in them and they are both on the same WiFi.  What can I do?

    Hello Wyodor,
thanks for your reply on my question.
You are wright the index file is 308 KB.
And offcourse that I delete my files and documents is not an Iweb problem, but because my English is not that good, that I thougt I try to tell the whole story, and hope people can read trough the lines.
Why I didn't use Iweb to upload to the server is because the server company recommanded to use file zilla. And I am a nobody with this kind of things, so I did exactly what they tell me to do.
No, i did not make a backup of Iweb and the domain file, but reading other messages on this forum showed me that I can maybe try to make empty the cashfile (?)
and otherwise I have bad luck and have to make my website again. Offcourse I have a lot of examples from all the pages (copied from the local map to my USB stick) and my website is aprox. 15 Mb, (not so big) so it will cost me a few nigths.
But I'm still hoping on a miracle :-)
    greetings Lasource

  • Migration assistant freezes  - PLEASE HELP ASAP

I am trying to run the migration assistant on a new imac i7 that I received. The "old" machine is an i5 ,and it is transferring about 500gb of data. It ran for many hours, and has been stuck on "19 minutes" remaining for about an hour now. What should I do?
Am I going to have to redo the entire transfer? (I hope not - it took HOURS, AND HOURS!)
I'm sure it isn't "good" to simply power off, or unplug one of the machines while the migration assistant is running. What should I do? Need to some asap, as I need to get the machine up and running.
    Thanks for your help!

    twitter.com/Rick_Smith

Thanks for the feedback. I actually just followed the directions on the new i7.
I took it out of the box, powered on, went through a few menus, and then selected the option to transfer settings from another mac. It never asked for updates, or anything.
It simply asked me to hook up a firewire cable (fw 800), and then restart the "old" computer and hold down "t" as it restarted. It did that, the new machine "found" the "old" one, and it started transferring.
I had about 500 gb of data on the old machine. So it's taken a long time, but then it got to 19 min remaining, and has been stuck there every since. I really hate doing a hard restart, but it looks like I have no choice...
I guess I"ll go try that..
    **fingers crossed*

  • Computer not responding during migration assist

I bought a 27" iMac and have been trying to use migration assist to transfer my files and settings over from my 17" MacBook Pro with little success.  The iMac recognizes the MacBook and the confirmation code pops up on both but once the migration begins, the iMac has a message pop up that says the MacBook is not responding, even though it has a message saying that the iMac is ready.
I've tried searching other posts here but can't seem to find any with the same issue.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Well, I was following the instructions as they were presented on the screen.  As I mentioned, things seemed to progress normally, the two computers seemed to be communicating but then the message that the MBP was not responding would pop up and I would be forced to quit the migration.
I had tried both FW 800 and ethernet connections to no avail.  After updating the iMac, I am running Mountain Lion on both machines and had consulted Pondini's guide prior to posting here.  I also opened up all the sharing options I could find on both computers thinking that would help. I'll take a closer look at Pondini's guide and see if that provides some answers.
    Thanks.
