Migration Assistant - Gigabyte Ethernet?

I currently have a MacBook Pro and I will be moving to my newly purchased MacBook Pro. I want to keep it relatively easy... I don't want to transfer applications or system/library stuff, but all the other stuff I want to slide right over... Like my iTunes, iPhoto, Documents Folder, Mail accounts/info, Safari bookmarks, etc.
Now, it says to use Firewire... Can I use FW800 instead of FW400? Can I use Gigabyte Ethernet instead of those other two by connecting the computers together? What is the fastest and easiest way?
I have never used the Migration Assistant and I have found little help as far as manuals go that describe its full use...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Should I be able to use MA with Firewire 400 on the old machine to Firewire 800 on the new machine? I have a 400/800 cable. The old machine doesn't have 800. I restart the old machine with 'T' and the Firewire symbol comes up, but then the new machine says the "Waiting for disks to appear". At one point I think it found a drive but said OS X was not found. MA now has the option to migrate via Ethernet or WiFi, but I can't get THAT to work either. :(((

I just migrated my Powerbook G4 12 to my new Macbook Pro 13. I tried the migration about 10 times using various forms of network connection - both ethernet and wireless - and all of them failed at some point during the migration. When my firewire 800 - 400 cable arrived, I plugged it in to the two laptops and migrated without error.
There is a thread on here about the flakeyness of using migration assistant between Intel and PPC. If you are planning to migrate between these two processors, I recommend skipping the ethernet option and using Firewire instead.

  • Migration Assistant without Ethernet or FW

    Hi...
WIll be getting a refurbished MacBook tomorrow, along with a new Airport Extreme. My problem is that the Powerbook (G4) it's replacing has a dead ethernet port (one reason I'm replacing it). Also, the MacBook apparently doesn't have a Firewire 400 port, so connecting it to my Powerbook for migrating appears to be out as well.
I'm assuming it's smarter to install the Airport Extreme before cranking up the MacBook for the first time. Will the Migration Assistant on the MacBook automatically find that wireless connection (once set up with the Powerbook), or will I have to manually go back & run it Migration Assistant later? Would Bluetooth work in this case?
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated! TIA...
    Paul

Oh, and I suppose (hope) bluetooth is not supported for this.. otherwise you can litterally expect weeks (if not months) to perform the transfer
Set up the airport first, have the macbook plugged to it via ethernet, and use wifi to connect the powerbook to the airport. This will use the wifi only for one machine, getting a bit more speed out of your network.

  • Migration Assistant over ethernet crashes with wifi turned off

I am attempting to migrate data from one macbook (early 2008, 10.7.5) to a newer macbook (mid 20180, 10.9). Both systems are fully up to date. The connection I am trying to use is a gigabit ethernet connection and both systems are connected to the same gigabit ethernet hub and they booth have an IP address. Before I start Migration Assistant on both systems, I turn off wifi. I then start Migration Assistant on the newer macbook and get it to the point where it is looking for sources. I then start the Migration Assistant on the older macbook and set it to transfer data to another mac. At the newer macbook I can now see the older macbook and select it. I then see a code on the newer macbook and then on the older macbook. I select continue on the older macbook and continue on the newer macbook. At this point, I am assuming that the newer macbook is attempting to get a listing of users and settings to update. This is when the Migration Assistant on the newer macbook exits. The screen goes gray and then I see the login screen. It doesn't matter the order that I start Migration Assistant on the two macbooks, it always dies in the same way. The only way to get Migration Assistant to get to the point of selecting users and settings is to let the wifi connection stay on on the newer macbook. Unfortunately, I don't think that the newer macbook is using the gigabit connection to get the data. The estimated completion times goes all over the place, 2 hours, then 6 hours, then 24 hours, now 26 hours, after 2 and a half hours wall clock time. I also don't see any lights at the gigabit ethernet connection. I guess my question is two-fold:
    1. Why is the Migration Assistant crashing? I can't find a log file conspicuously named that contains Migration Assistant log settings. By the way, I feel that Migration Assistant should have an option similar to the Installer that allows the user to see the log file messages while it is running.
    2. How can I force Migration Assistant to use the gigabit ethernet connection?

What I have seen that I didn't mention is that Migration Assistant would always complete after many hours. I do have confidence that it would copy files over no matter how slow it was going. The fact that I could get Migration Assistant to crash just by turning off wifi before starting it is a little troubling but not critical at this point. What I was more concerned with was how to make it use gigabit off a switch rather than directly connect it (question 2) and how to ensure it was using gigabit ethernet by examining a log file (question 1). Since I already had gigabit connected, I was never asked to connect them together as you mention.

  • Need help with Migration Assistant and Ethernet

    Hello,
I recently purchased a MacBook, and I'm trying to Migrate my files from my old Mac Mini. The MB has no FireWire, and Wireless transfer speed is impossibly slow.
I'm hoping to be able to connect the computers via an Ethernet cable to do the transfer. Is this possible? I've never done it before, so how to I go about doing it? Just plug in the cable and it's all good?
    Thanks for the answers!
    -Kevin

Yes. It's essentially the same as wireless except you connect the two by Ethernet cable. If you already have a wired/wireless router it's easy to just set up file sharing, but you can do a direct connection as well. See the following:

    Hello Wyodor,
thanks for your reply on my question.
You are wright the index file is 308 KB.
And offcourse that I delete my files and documents is not an Iweb problem, but because my English is not that good, that I thougt I try to tell the whole story, and hope people can read trough the lines.
Why I didn't use Iweb to upload to the server is because the server company recommanded to use file zilla. And I am a nobody with this kind of things, so I did exactly what they tell me to do.
No, i did not make a backup of Iweb and the domain file, but reading other messages on this forum showed me that I can maybe try to make empty the cashfile (?)
and otherwise I have bad luck and have to make my website again. Offcourse I have a lot of examples from all the pages (copied from the local map to my USB stick) and my website is aprox. 15 Mb, (not so big) so it will cost me a few nigths.
But I'm still hoping on a miracle :-)
    greetings Lasource

I have just used migration assistant to import photos (using an ethernet cable) from my PC. It has worked but they have gone into a new user on my MacPro. How can I merge them into the one user account.

How many pictures (or how many bytes) are we talking?  Now that the pictures are imported one way to cross users is to use a removable drive (although large volumes of files preclude this).
The other is to login as the user where the pictures are, then copy them into the public drop box of the user where you want the picture.
The arrow is showing (in ths example) copy files from the Pictures folder for my user to the guest user accounts public dropbox.  When you do this you may have to authenticate and you won't be able to see the results of the copy until you log in as the other user.
All users are in the folder "/Users/"

    m1doc,
Are you migrating from a Mac or a MS Window machine? Either way you probably should be in touch with AppleCare, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. • Migration assistant from windows to mac using Ethernet cable

I have just bought a year old MacBook Pro and have been trying to transfer date from my windows laptop to the mac using the migration assistant.
The first time I tried this process it tried to do it via wifi and the information message stated it would take 28+ hours, but the connection was lost after a few hours and the process stopped.
I would like to restart this using an Ethernet cable from the windows laptop to the mac, but when migration assistant starts it automatically defaults to wifi and doesn't give me an option of choosing to use an Ethernet cable.
How can I force it to use this cable? Because it will take too long by using wifi.

  • Want to you ethernet for migration assistant?

I would like to use the simple ethernet connection between my Imac Intel and new Macbook Pro. I see in the user's guide that it is possible, but when I opened migration assistant on the new Macbook Pro there was only the Firewire option. I don't have a firewire cable. Can I used ethernet and how?
IO tried to transfer my Time Machine backup to the new Macbook Pro but only got some of the information, not the email settings and content, nor Photos for Iphoto or ITunes contents.
when I did the same thing with another Macbook Pro and Air, everything transfered perfectly...I had a mirror image of one computer on the other, including Calendar, etc.
I just did a complet reinstall and erase and wondering what I did wrong.
    Any tips?

I am able to connect through the ethernet cable, the option to transfer the deeper files (there are three items to check, one is setting and apps, two is surface files, and the third is deeper files on the system, which I presume are the emails, itunes contents, photos, calendar, etc.) is not enabled. There is a check but it is greyed out. When I tried the same option backing up from my Time Machine, I ended up with only a partial backup of the contents from my Imac to the new Macbook Pro. I did an install and erase to start again now.
When tried the same backup from Time Machine with a different Macbook Pro and Air a month or so ago, everything from the Imac was on the portables. That's what I want to do now.
I don't know why but I must be doing something wrong or things have changed for doing this.
