Migration Assistant going to take 40 hours?!?
I just got in a new MacBookPro running ML, and I need to move the user from her 10.6.8 MacBook. I plugged them both in via ethernet to the same switch, and set them up to migrate from old to new and hit "continue". Now both machines are showing the swirly barber pole, not even started moving a file, and it says "about 37 hours, 51 minutes remaining" and the time is still creeping up. When it calculated how much it was going to move, it was less than 130GB, so going on 40 hours it absurd, and, anyway, it hasn't started yet!
Any ideas as to what is wrong?
I waited about 20 minutes, and the time kept going up, so then I killed it and dug up some firewire cables. That way it took about an hour.
(I can't find my firewire 400-to-800 cable, so I used an old lacie drive with both connectors as a firewire bus. Of course it took me half an hour to find the power brick for the old disk!)

Migration assistant taking over 100 hours using ethernet?
Yesterday i got a new 2013 iMac starting 27 inch and wanted to move files from my old 2007 starting 20 inch imac. So when I used migration assistant, i decided not to port over the user from the old imac. Since it did not port over itunes music, iphoto etc., i ran it again this time porting over the user from the old imac. But now it says it will take 100 hours+ to complete. I don't wanna wait 4 days fro this to finish. Is there any way to do this faster? I have about 225 gbs to transfer and i am using an ethernet cable. I am not sure if it is gigabit or not as it has been lying around for awile. I also turned off wifi as it may interfere.
Gigabit is 10 times faster than 10/100 (the next one down), it makes a big difference. I would check.

C!I just migrated my Powerbook G4 12 to my new Macbook Pro 13. I tried the migration about 10 times using various forms of network connection - both ethernet and wireless - and all of them failed at some point during the migration. When my firewire 800 - 400 cable arrived, I plugged it in to the two laptops and migrated without error.
There is a thread on here about the flakeyness of using migration assistant between Intel and PPC. If you are planning to migrate between these two processors, I recommend skipping the ethernet option and using Firewire instead. -
TS1963 Migration Assistant hangs at 29 hours
Bought a new iMac yesterday. When i fired it it up the new Mac offered Migration Assistant. And so I did follow the prompts and got the migration started. I was using the wifi connection to do this. This morning I found that after 18 hours the time is still at 29 hours and and the progress bar has not moved. When I looked at it last night the time was 29 hours so no difference. I am considering shutting down both Macs.
Quit using the Wi-Fi, it's by far the slowest and least reliable method. Use a Firewire connection, if your old Mac uses FW400 then you will need a cable like:

Trouble with migration assistant going from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1
Hi,
I have a macbook pro running 10.5.8 and just got a new macbook running 10.6.1. I'm trying to run the migration assistant. It gets to the point where it says 'preparing information' on each computer and then it seems to just hang. I've let it go for 45 minutes and nothing happens past that.
Any help would be appreciated!

On the old computer do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
With both computers turned off connect a Firewire cable between them. Boot the old computer into Target Disk Mode. After the TDM screen appears boot the new computer normally. After the new computer has started you should find a drive icon for your old computer on the new computer's Desktop.
Open Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder. Select the migration option (should be already selected) to migrate from another computer or hard drive. Then follow the onscreen instructions. For additional help select Migration Assistant Help from the Help menu. -
HT4796 How long does the migration assistant transfer usually take?
This transfer seems to be taking a really long time and no real change in status. How long does it usually take?
I originally tried to migrate from my MacBook Pro to my new iMac via wifi. 30 hours, and it never finished. Tried again, same result. 3 days later, and never finished the transfer, I connected the two via ethernet. Less than 4 hours to transer files (had a lot of high quality pix), but now up and running with no problems ... although I now have two main users. Read somewhere that there's a way to fix that. Don't EVER go wifi for Migration. Especially if you have others in your household using wifi, or a lot of high MB files. Or even if you've put you phone on wifi.
Oh yeah: don't forget to set your drive auto shut down to "never." That info isn't provided. Crucial for both devices. If either computer sleeps (the drive, not the screen), migration stops and doesn't warn as to "why" your migration isn't progressing, and you have to start all over. Be sure to go back and adjust the computer shut dowm to "never." System Preferences," "Energy Saver."
I am Mac, through and through. Just wish they'd offer more "how to" upfront versus me searching online or making an appointment to see some Genius, or waiting on hold for Apple assistance, to solve problems which I believe many face.
3 days later, migration complete. Finally. Seriously, Ethernet is the only way to go when you move from one Mac to another.
Been there, done that. Wish that Apple would suggest Ethernet as the way to Migrate. Have as of yet to see a successful migration via wifi; and I have looked, Googled, searched the topic. Apple should suggest Ethernet as the best way to migrate. Period. -
I am having probems with migration assistant. Trying to transfer data from a windows laptop to iMac 2011. It was working fine when I did the set-up yesterday, but it was going to take hours to transfer some videos so I quit the process with the intention of doing it again at a later stage. However today I find that everytime I get to the 'Quit other applications' box on the Mac and click 'continue', nothing happens. Have checked mission control and confirmed no other apps running. Tried several times with the same result every time. Migration Assistant running on my laptop with the 'Waiting for mac to connect' box displayed. Mac is connected to wi-fi OK as able to use Safari and access internet. Any ideas, please?
Thanks for your suggestions. Have managed to get Migration Assistant working but now have a new problem, i.e. where does it save the transferred files?!! Searched a few forums and it seems it saves it under your old username, or suchlike. Anyway I tried logging on as a new user using my old user name but there were only a handful of files there, couldn't locate the majority of stuff from my old laptop. Anyway I don't intend to go through any more hoops with MA - will just save the important stuff to an external drive and transfer it that way. Not impressed with MA at all. I thought it was supposed to be a user-friendly tool to simplify the transfer from pc to Mac - not my experience, I'm afraid!

Deleting an older user account and migration assistant question

So I'm out of the loop big time. I've had my current 17" iMac since 2006 (10.5.8) it's the white border one. Anywho I just got my new 27" i7 iMac and feel really stupid trying to migrate from the old computer to the new one. I couldn't figure it out so had to call Apple help.
First off I put the ethernet cable in the back of both machines thinking it was the Firewire and chose the Firewire option and kept wondering why it wouldn't work. Then it dawns on me I have the ethernet cable in. So I try to transfer that way and get stuck on the Install Mac OSX install disk and install the CD or DVD setup something or other. Well I stick the DVD in my old iMac and open the install disk and see nothing that says CD or DVD setup. I call the Apple line and realize that because my new iMac isn't hooked up to the internet I can't use the ethernet option (okay why I didn't realize that I don't know but it's been a long week and I haven't migrated a computer in a long time).
On top of all that the lady tells me the new iMac has a 800 Firewire and my old one only has a 400 Firewire (so that is why I couldn't get my Firewire 400 cable to work).
So she tells me it will take ages to set up wirelessly but I need to click no and not transfer data to the new iMac, then setup my internet then go back into migration assistant on both machines and click the network option. It is taking ages to do this.
I told her I was on the forums and that doing it this way would create a new user account and she said just to delete the old one once the new one is created. Is it that simple? My old user account is called Pink Tuley and new one is called Tuley. So once the migration is complete (think it's going to take hours on end, my old machine is 160GB with about 140GB of it full) do I just delete the older Pink Tuley account?

I'm currently migrating my old iMac to my new iMac via the internet wirelessly. I did what the Apple support told me to do since I don't want to go out and buy a new Firewire cable (I have a 400 one now and would have to get one that has a 400 and 800 on each end which I could have bought at the store had I known).
Instead I chose not to migrate and set up my iMac with the internet, and now I'm migrating via migration assistant opened up on both machines using using the network option. It's okay if it takes forever to do as I've waited this long (I had to wait 5 weeks for my Macbook Pro HR-AG to arrive).
My old user account is called Pink Tuley and I thought there would be mass confusion if I named the new user account the same name so I chose Tuley for this one. Once I'm all migrated do I just go into the user accounts on my new iMac and delete Pink Tuley?

At first I could not find my files after Migration Assistant completed a 45 hours transfer of files from my Macbook to my new iMac. Then I realized that I had two identities on my new iMac. What is the best way to correct this? Do I have to start over and wait another 2 days for the migration?
I originally wanted to reinstall my info from the MacBook using Time Machine. The iMac would not recognize the backups on my external hard drive.
I decided to use Migration Assistant to move from my MacBook to my new iMac. After migration I tried to backup (bu) with Time Machine using the external disk I used for the MacBook. The Time Machine said the bu (over 450 Gb) was too large for the disk. I found this odd. There seemed to be a much higher amount of data on my iMac than existed on my MacBook. I bought a new 2Tb external. I originally hooked it up to my Airport Extreme with a USB cable. Time Machine said the bu would take over 36 hours. This seemed rediculous. I hooked up through USB directly to the iMac. It said the bu would take over 18 hours. Still rediculous.
After looking through things I discovered that Migration Assistant actually double copied all the data from my MacBook to my iMac. There were two copies of every folder. I deleted all the copies. Now I am trying to deal with my sons old ID and getting Time machine to work properly. It appears there were some disk permission issues. That my also relate to my sons ID. I cannot find his ID anywhere on the iMac but App Store keeps asking my to log on using his ID. -
i am installing leopard on a macbook, and have already done an erase and install. i have a full backup of my hard disk on an external firewire drive, made with SuperDuper. i can install leopard just fine, but when i use Migration Assistant to move all my users, files, settings, etc, it grinds for about an hour and then reports a "file transfer error." none of my data gets transferred. i would gladly move the files manually, and re-load all the applications, but certain apps, like addressbook, itunes, and ical, store their data differently in 10.5 than in 10.4. i have repaired the external with disk utility any number of times, ditto the hard disk on the macbook. i'm really flummoxed. has anyone experienced a similar problem with Migration Assistant and figured out a fix?
Hey - I'm having a problem that sounds a lot like yours. Migration assistant fails after an hour or so with 11 minutes remaining.
How did you find the corrupted file? I suspect I've got a file that it trips on every time, but I don't know how to find it. Migration Assistant doesn't offer any specifics on what it was doing when it failed.

Is Lightroom expected to take hours to complete "Import from Catalog" or is something wrong?
Im trying to import a catalog with about 2500 images into a "master catalog" with about 1500 images. It has taken hours for it to complete checking duplicate and then do the import after that. I restarted and now it is working "checking for changed duplicate photos".
Is this meant to be atrociously slow or am I missing something?Evidently this is designed to be attrociously slow... I can't think of any good reason why we would see this result otherwise. It's not like this is exactly a new issue with LR5.4... Realistically, this is probably a fairly low priority item for the development team in comparison, say... to the develop module image processing performance.
On a system that, practially speaking, has no effective resource bottlenecks: 2013 Mac Pro with disk that averages 850+MB/s read and write, 64 GB or RAM, 24 CPU cores, and a whole lot of OpenGL/CL GPU available, This is still going to take HOURS...
LR 5.4 is "checking for changed duplicate photos" between two 137K photo catalogs (~2.8 GB each) where I expect there to be approximately >90% duplicates.
I am seeing negligible disk I/O and it appears that LR is constrained to a single thread on a single CPU core for the entire scan/compare loop across the catalog data.

Sampling the process via Mac OS Activity Monitor, the call graph shows that the "AsyncDataServer" thread is processing the majority of the workload during the "cheking for changed duplicate photos" phase of the catalog import.
Considering this appears to be a single thread attempting to process all of the catalog data iteratively, it would be my primary suspect to consider for more love and attention towards parallelization of this code, perhaps via OpenCL on the GPU if each comparison is discrete and meets the various criteria for efficient GPU processing, otherwise, at least refactor for multi-threaded execeution on the CPU(s)...

Yosemite setup, migration assistants and timemachine restore didn't transfer ANY files to SSD
Hi,
I'm at a total loss after 2 days of trying to upgrade my hard disk to an SSD in my Macbook Pro.
I have tried Yosemite Setup assistant, the Migration Assistant in Utilities and Restore from Time Machine.
All 3 processes run for 5 hours and say they are transferring information with a progress bar and finish saying my mac is ready to use, but none of these processes actually transfer a single file.
At the end of 2 days, they have just created a new empty user. No user files, no applications, nothing.
Please can you tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Here is what I did in detail
17" late 2011 MBP
original 750gb HDD is full.
bought a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD and a caddy to replace the optical drive
Left original HDD in place so I am transferring files between 2 internal drives (HDD->SSD)
installed the SSD and formatted default option Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)
rebooted into repair partition (10.9)
Installed OS X on the SSD
Setup assistant told me it could not transfer data because the HDD had a newer OS
Skipped transfer and installed 10.10.2 Yosemite on SSD
Yosemite successfully installed and working on SSD
Opened Migration assistant on SSD in Utilities and selected everything to transfer from internal HDD to SSD
Migration Assistant runs for 5 hours and says it is complete - but not a single new file has been transferred onto the SSD!!
Read that Migration Assistant is less reliable than Setup Assistant
Follow a guide to Boot into Safe Mode on SSD, delete user folders and setupdone file to trigger setup again.
Restart SSD and use Setup Assistant as though new installation to transfer files from HDD.
Setup Assistant runs for 5 hours transferring files from internal HDD and says it is complete - but not a single new file has been transferred onto the SSD!!
Reboot into repair partition (10.10) on SSD
Erase SSD and install Yosemite again

I just used Carbon Copy Cloner while waiting and it seems to have worked, except it cannot create the restore partition.
If I try again using Restore in Disk Utility in the 10.9 Recovery Partition, will it create the Recovery Partition on the SSD as well?
I was surprised that having installed Yosemite (10.10.2) on the original HDD, that the restore partition on that volume was 10.9 - how can I get my data and a 10.10 recovery partition onto the SSD?

Cannot get migration assistant working from PowerBook to MacBook Air - what am I doing wrong?

I am proud possessor of a new MacBook Air with Mac OS X 10.7. Up to now, I used a PowerBook with Mac OX X 10.4.11. Although the two macs - old and new one - are connected via the same WLAN network, I cannot get the migration assistant going. The two cannot find each other, although they are only 5 centimetres apart....what am I doing wrong? Do I need an update for the PowerBook? And if yes, which one? Or should I give up?

Migration assistant power PC G5 to macbook pro intel
Hi, my experience with migration was not plug and play but there's some tricks. First get to the desktop of your new computer. Choose a firewire cable (800 if possible for faster transfer) and connect the two mac together. Rebbot the old one holding «T». When you see the firewire sign on the monitor of the old mac, you're ready to rock! First, my primary disk didn't mouth on desktop, I change the firewire cable, nothing happen. You have to open disk utility (then my primary disk of the old G5 mount on the desktop) you repair the disk (all of them) and then you open the migration assistant. IT take a while before (6 minutes!) before the application is ready to process (like a pre-scan or something like that... so be patient.) I tranfer 80 GB in 40 minutes. I didn't transfer the applications however... It the only part you have to do manually (too much problems for me...) Finally, if you want transfer your apps anyway, get the xslimer apps that will remove every powerpc code useless for your intel. Hope it will help and enjoy the next generation of mac!

Can Migration Assistant copy from a Time Machine volume?
My PowerMac G5 died, and I'm replacing it with a MacBook Pro. Is it possible for the Migration Assistant to copy my files from my old system's Time Machine backup, since the machine itself doesn't work?
Also, any complications running Migration Assistant going from a Power Mac system to an Intel-based system? (Aside from the obvious: that any Power Mac native apps won't work...)
Thanks!yes, it's possible but it's actually not advisable to use Migration assistant when migrating from PPC to intel. definitely do not migrate the applications.
