Migration assistant has doubled up my apps on launchpad

I used the migration assistant the other day to move from my old macbook to my new macbook pro, however the launchpad now has 2 of all the standard apps on. How do I fix this and delete the doubled up apps?

You may find some useful ideas in the "More Like This" list at the right.

Migration assistant has made my life more complicated... now I can log into my old profile from my G4 iBook... but not easily open pdf documents... as Adobe not supported it says....
On the New wizzy macbook side, pdfs open at a click in finder. I even ended up emailing form one side to another.
I dont want 2 'profiles' or accounts on this system, just one that works!   I'd like access to my useful old programs, & files but the ability to use the best of what the new computer can do to, surely that is possible??? Help... Please

  • HT4413 Does Migration Assistant work on Adobe CS6 apps?

Just bought a new macbook pro with retina display. Really need to know if I can migrate my design apps from my old macbook pro to my new one.

You can migrate all or none of your apps. There is no way to only select your design apps.
Note, if you plan on using your same User name on both Macs, you should use Setup Assistant when you first startup your new Mac, instead of Migration Assistant.
Aslo note: Adobe CS6 apps can only be activated on one Mac at a time.

  • Migration assistant has halted at "less than a minute remaining"

Im in the process of transferring my MacBook Pro to a new MacBook Pro.
Since I didn't have a Thunderbolt cable and the ethernet cable is not an option on the new MacBook Pro I have done it wirelessly.
At the start is had 29 hrs to complete…I have been extremely patient until now…this is 2 days into the transfer.
It says it has "less than a minute remaining"…would be great if that were true.
Its been stuck on that now for 3 hrs.
I did note the time remaining kept going up and down during the transfer so I'm hoping this is the case and it will eventually finish.
Any suggestions on what to do if it doesn't change anytime soon?

I had this problem migrating from my iMac; a late 2009 24in FW800 with Mavericks, to a late 2013 27inch Thunderbolt.  Migration Assistant hung at "lass than a minute" for over an hour and change...   My back up drives had two F800 interfaces and a USB.  I was abe to plug an additional drive into one of the remaining available ports on the back of my Time Capsule drive.  This woke up the Time Capsule drive and finished the migration installation process.
I beleive the setting "put Hard Drives to sleep when possible" must have been on by default on the unused OS without my awareness.  The action of plugging in an additional drive to the remaining port on my Time Capusle back up drive woke the Time Capsule drive up and then in completed almost imediately.  Hope this helps and that any future readers have a BAck Up drive with more than one port and an extra device or drive they can plug into in (Daisy Chain Style) to get the Capusle drive to complete.   Good luck!
    Turned Out Flawless for Me.

  • HT4413 I started the migration assistant but it stopped and the Mac Air locked up.  I would like to undo what the migration assistant has done so far.  Is that possible...and how do I get the new Mac Air unlocked?

I have a new Mac Air and started the migration assistant.  It stopped at some point and the Mac Air locked up...the cursor moves but I can't get anything to happen on the screen.  I would like to undo what has been done so far on the migration assistant as well as unlock the Mac Air.  How do I do this?

    Try recovery mode.

    Hi,
just got my new iMac and want to migrate files from my Windows XP machine using Windows Migration Assistant for Lion. It seemed to install OK on the PC but it will not run. It comes up with an message saying found errors in preparing data. Any ideas?

Are you using wifi to migrate?

  • My migration assistant has frozen at 3 hours and 55 minutes.  It started at 12 hours and 30 minutes.  It now appears to be 3/4ths complete, but is frozen. What is my next step to unfreeze the action?

I am using the migration assistant(wireless) from my 24 inch IMac to my new 27inch IMac.  It started at 12 hours plus and is now frozen at 3 hours and 55 minutes.  What can I do?

Migration Assistant may have completed the tranfer. Restart the computer and log in as the user MA migrated the data to and see if your data migrated successfuly.

  • Migration assistant has been stuck for at least 5 hours

I was transferring files on my G4 from 10.4.11 to my new 10.5 leopard and everything seemed ok.
Now, it's been stuck showing "transferring files from User Mary X-   1 hour, 13 minutes remaining"
and it's ben like that for at least 5 hours
anything I can/should do to help it along?

To be clear, it has said, "1 hr. 13 mins. to go" for the last 5+ hours ??__ indicating nothing is happening ??
    Is this correct ??_____
"Different drives in the same Mac "
Are they on the same ribbon cable, as master and slave / cable select ?? ______
Are they jumpered properly for each position ??______
Or do you have some other arrangement like one of the plugged into a card in a card slot ??______

  • Will Migration Assistant replace my apps?

    This is what I mean:
For example, I had Facetime on my current Macbook, and I used Migration Assistant to get all my apps from my Time Machine backup.
In the Time Machine backup, the Facetime app is in it.
Will the Migration Assistant replace the new Facetime in the Macbook with the old Facetime in the Time Macine Backup??
When I upgrade to Mac OS X Lion, I am planning to use Migration Assistant to get my old apps and files into Mac OS X Lion.
    Thanks.

No, neither Setup Assistant nor Migration Assistant will replace an app.  See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups?
But there's no indication you need either to upgrade to Lion.  That has not been required in any previous version of OSX; it just installs the new version, without disturbing anything else.

  • HT4796 Migration assistant is telling me that it has lost connection with my Mac and to ensure they are on the same network.  They are, and an ethernet cable is plugged into them.  What do i do?

Migration Assistant has been running since yesterday evening.  My Dell is now telling me that its trying to reconnect to my Mac and to ensure they are both using the same network.  I have an Ethernet cable plugged in them and they are both on the same WiFi.  What can I do?

    Hello Wyodor,
thanks for your reply on my question.
You are wright the index file is 308 KB.
And offcourse that I delete my files and documents is not an Iweb problem, but because my English is not that good, that I thougt I try to tell the whole story, and hope people can read trough the lines.
Why I didn't use Iweb to upload to the server is because the server company recommanded to use file zilla. And I am a nobody with this kind of things, so I did exactly what they tell me to do.
No, i did not make a backup of Iweb and the domain file, but reading other messages on this forum showed me that I can maybe try to make empty the cashfile (?)
and otherwise I have bad luck and have to make my website again. Offcourse I have a lot of examples from all the pages (copied from the local map to my USB stick) and my website is aprox. 15 Mb, (not so big) so it will cost me a few nigths.
But I'm still hoping on a miracle :-)
    greetings Lasource

  • Used 'migration assistant'  - now iPhone app problems

I used 'migration assistant' to transfer all my apps & files from my iMAC to my iBookPro.
Now when I've tried to update/sync my iPhone apps via iTunes, I got error messages indicating that many apps were no longer authorized on my iPhone.
So I tried deleting and re-installing those apps on my iPhone - however iTunes shows they are still there and will not let me re-install the same apps.
There appears to be no way to delete these apps from their listing in my iTunes.
I also have 2 other family member each with iPhones & some of these same apps (most all of them free) were loaded onto their iPhones.
I do not understand why iTunes would not allow one to delete a listed app and re-install it.  The app can be deleted off of the iPhone but NOT removed from its listing in my local iTunes environment.

You need to authorize the computer: Store>Authorize this Computer.

  • What exactly does the migration assistant to?

I'm thinking of upgrading to a faster Mac, I'm tired of the slowness of a Core 2 Duo... when I get my new one, what is everything the migration assistant will do? Does it transfer all my apps and their product keys over? Or do I have to reinstall stuff? Do all my settings stay the same (dock, network, etc.)? What gets transferred, and what doesn't? And once the transfer is done, will my old Mac stay the same, or go back to default settings, or what?

    Eric wrote:

Migration Assistant has several options that interact to produce different results depending on how you combine them. For instance, if you choose to transfer apps but not user accounts, then obviously user account settings don't get transferred. Conversely, if you opt to transfer users but not apps, user-specific application settings in the user domain will be transferred but won't do anything.
You also have options to transfer all or only some user accounts & to transfer all or only selected folders in their home folders. Transferring apps is an all or nothing process -- you cannot pick & choose which apps get transferred like you can with users. However, Migration Assistant will not overwrite newer versions of applications with older ones. Similarly, network & system settings will be transferred only if applicable to the new Mac.
Even if you opt to transfer everything possible, a few apps may require reinstallation or reregistration if they include certain types of anti-piracy technology.
IOW, there is no simple answer; however, Migration Assistant is usually able to sort out what you want quite well from the options you choose.
And once the transfer is done, will my old Mac stay the same, or go back to default settings, or what?
    Your old Mac is unaffected.

  • Migration Assistant in Lion won't recognize Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard

I just got an iMac with Lion. I am trying to use the Migration Assistant to move my files/apps etc from a Time Machine backup to the new computer.  The MA will not recognize the backup drive - (external firewire 800).  I can see the backup drive on my desktop but it does not show up as an option to choose in the Migration Assistant.  Any idea what might be wrong.  The backup is from an iMac running Snow Leopard and all the system software was last updated on Dec 9th. It think it is as current as I could get with Snow Leopard. Any ideas what is wrong?
    Thanks,
    Chad

This happened to me after hard drive replacement under the Seagate Drive Recall at the local Apple Store. Here's what I learned from the process:
I Wagged the Mac home, fired it up (with naked OS installed at the Apple Store), and it wouldn't see my Time Machine drive with Setup Assistant - not on firewire 800 nor USB. Just a grey spinner that lasts forever. When I try just continuing anyway, it offers me something that looks plausible, but then puts up a dialog about duplicate user name, and no matter what I enter, it always says "that user already exists". So I think - maybe Migration Assistant. Complete the setup, create an account, watch the nice welcome movie. BAM - there's my Time Machine drive on the desktop. OK - it has to work . . . but no. Same behavior in Migration Assistant, plus the new OS offers to start making backups on my Time Machine disk - it's not recognizing it at all.
So - back to the Apple Store - let the genius figure it out. It turns out there are multiple problems. First, the "genius" who imaged my new machine picked 10.7.2 but my machine had 10.7.5 - turns out, it's not enough just to have right cat. Even a point release older OS may not recognize a newer Time Machine drive. The guy at the desk said "We have images of everything but the 10.7.2 has free iLife in it, so they like to use that one". What the heck? They don't image what you had originally as a matter of sane process?
Having figured that out, we re-image 10.7.5 at the store thinking we've fixed it. But no - Setup Assistant still won't see the Time Machine drive. Not on USB, not on Firewire. Not in a box, not with a fox.
So here's the second trick - newer machines have a recovery partion. see: http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/  Boot with the option key held down, pick that partition, then you'll get a "system restore" option, to restore your whole system from a Time Machine backup. My drive was recognized by the recovery partition restore process when neither Setup nor Migration Assistant would. Obviously, there's something broken in Setup/Migration Assistant.
    Takeaway:
    - if you're getting a drive replaced by Apple, make sure they image *exactly* the same OS
    - if Setup Assistant fails, use the recovery partition for system restore
    - Use Recovery Disk Assistant http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433 NOW to make yourself a recovery thumb drive just in case. With Apple's new "no media" approach to the OS, you're hosed without it.

  • How long  should Migration Assistant take to find documents?

I understand that the migration itself could take several hours over wifi (I am transferring from a PC to a new Mac.  But Migration Assistant has been "searching Documents" for app. 3 hours.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

The estimates given may be about right, even if the computers sit side-by-side, and have Ethernet cable; the numbers add up depending on transfer speeds, hard disk drive spin-rate and read-write speed, bus speed, RAM speed, and some suggest between 1GB per second and up (or down) depending on the connections.
You should also look into obtaining more than one device for a suitable archive, system backup, clone, and another external drive suitable for a complete backup of your system that is not a timemachine. And maybe a UPS with power filtering, and extra runtime should you be caught with your electrical utility mains down...
    Good luck & happy computing!
