Migration Assistant in Lion OS not working

Installed Lion OS on both my iMac I7 and my Mac NoteBookPro with I7 processor. Tried to connect the two computers with Firewire but no luck. The remote HD pops up on the desktop but Migration Assistant cannot find the other computer, irrespective of which one I make the client. Exactly the same happens with ethernet cable. I do know that Firewire on the NoteBook worked under Snow Leopard. Any ideas anyone, please, or is Migration Assistant actually stuffed,
Best Regards
Dietrich

I believe Migration Assistant was upgraded for Lion early in the week.  Do you have the latest?  Should be Version 4.

  • After Restoring with Migration Assistant internet accounts are not working properly

    Hello!
My Macbook Pro's HDD fried a week ago, so I swapped it for a new one. I had a backup from about 30mins before the issue happened, so I thought everything would go fine with Time Machine. Well, not quite. After installing Mac OS X Mavericks from the Disk Utility and telling the system to apply the latest backup on Migration Assistant during the installation, everything started up the way I left it, but several problems showed up and I have been trying to troubleshoot them.
    Issues:
    1. I used to have Facebook, Twitter and two Gmail accounts logged via the Internet Accounts preferences. Used the gmail accounts for notes, contacts and calendars. Now, they all show up on the menu, but when I click on any of them it tells me they aren't connected and asks me for their password. When I put it down, it gives me an "Unable to verify account" message. If I delete the accounts and try to reinsert them, I get the same message. What's even more weird: When I restart, they are all there again.
    2. Notes doesn't update properly. It shows me all the notes up until like 4 weeks ago, and whenever I even click on the app's window, it tells me it can't connect to Gmail and asks me for its password again. Several other apps that require syncing, like Calendar, have the same issue.
    Troubleshooting attempts:
    1. It's not a problem with these accounts, as I've been able to  sync them no problem if I create a new user. But I had some serious work being done and I don't really want to get a fresh start.
    2. I tried doing a clean install and when the Migration Assistant showed up I asked to transfer everything except personal documents and data. It worked, but I lost all my personal files that are not on dropbox (not many, but there were a few important things). Also the wifi didn't connect at all, kept saying it was self assigning an IP or whatever. This did not happen before.
    3. Not using migration assistant at all, but restarting the system and restoring a time machine backup, even an earlier one from that same day. Mac gets stuck on spinning wheel during boot :/
This killed my weekend's productivity already, as each clean install and time machine restoring takes 3hrs+. I don't know what to do at this point.

    ragob66,
    Welcome to the Apple discussions!
    Try this:
*Accessing Time Machine Backups From Another User Account or Computer*
Yes, you can do this using the Time Machine interface.
Attach the drive containing the TM backups to your computer.
Control-click the TM icon in the dock and select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks...".
Highlight the desired disk and click “Use Selected Disk”. This will now allow you to browse those TM backups via the ‘time travel’ window. From here you can restore what files you need access to. Bear in mind that any files moved will have the permissions of that previous user account. Thus you may be prompted for the user name and password of that previous account. However, once verified you should be able to adjust “Sharing & Permissions” in the files “Get Info” window.
Let us know if this resolved your issue.

  • Migration Assistant from Windows PC not working

I have just got my first iMac and now trying to use the Migration Assistant with the iMac but it is not working.
I have loaded migration assistant on the house pc and when runnung Migration Assistant on the iMac it recognises the Dell PC.  However it then seems to lock and say 'looking for other sources' and then sits in a loop.
I then open Migration Assistant on the PC and that just says 'waiting for mac to respond'
Are there any additional settings I need to change on the PC? or anywhere decent for support - there's hardly any additional material on the Apple site.
My wife is wondering what was the point of getting a Mac if the first thing doesn't even work.
    Very frustating

  • Migration Assistant from Time Machine not working, Migration Assistant from Time Machine not working

    Hello,
A friend of mine recently bought a new Macbook Pro.  I believe it is a 2.8 Ghz i7 model.
Anyway, they wanted to transfer all of their stuff from a 5 year old Macbook (running Snow Leopard) to their new Macbook Pro (running Lion) and they asked me for help.  I suggested they run Migration Assistant from a Time Machine backup.  They did that last night and everything ran fine until the very end, when they got this error message "Superdrive firmware Update 2.1 is not compatible with this version of Mac OS X."  Also, it appears that nothing had been transfered.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Thanks a lot both. The thing was that I couldn't find any DVDs that belonged to my new computer, so I just used my old Leopard DVD thinking that it didn't matter which one I used anyway. When you said it did
matter, however, I looked a little closer and found two DVDs in my new computer's box. I'm doing a clean installation as we speak.
    Thank you for your help!

  • Migration Assistant and Adobe License Not working

I used migration assistant and my adobe cs3 license is not valid. Adobe had me delete a file and download their license recovery tool. When I launch it a non functioning terminal window comes up. I was told the user ID and password would be the next thing I saw. Any suggestions?

  • Does Lion really not work with Microsoft Office?

does Lion really not work with Microsoft Office?

I am afraid I have reverted to Snow Leopard as I was having one problem after another with Lion and for every problem I was solving, two new ones cropped up. I won't bore you with a long list, but one example is whenever I clicked on a single saved document to view, Microsoft Word would open not only that particular document, but also half a dozen other ones as well. Also, my Canon printer did not operate properly nor would Aol. With a lot of other weird stuff happening every day, the final straw was when my Time Capsule wouldn't backup properly, but just 'hang' indefinitely.
Luckily, I have two HD disks on my iMac and I had installed Lion on HD2 while still retaining Snow Leopard on HD1. I also made a Lion installation disk for future installation when all these software bugs have been sorted.
I am back to normal service with Snow Leopard and shall not return to Lion until at least the next upgrade/patch becomes available. I so looked forward to Lion as well, but I was fighting a losing battle.
I would suggest anyone who is in my position trying to stem the tidalwave of software problems with Lion, make an installation disk for Lion and go back to SL until the next upgrade.

  • Mac Os X lion installation not working.

os x lion installation not working, when the installation bar comes to 99% a pop up widow tells me that the installation has failed and the file could be damaged or something. But i just downloaded it from appstore. Any ideas?

Here's an update on my problem:
Called Apple Support the other day. They basically told me that they can't help, because this is a problem of misconfiguration and that those kinda things weren't covered. Still the person on the line gave me a hint, I should look for leftovers of previously installed software in /Library/LaunchDaemons/ and /Library/LaunchAgents/ .
Well, that did the trick. In one of the folders I found "net.shrew.iked.plist". This file obvioulsy belongs to the ShrewSoft VPN client. I removed it and the built-in client works again.
I reinstalled ShrewSoft one more time to see if it works without the mentioned plist-file...needless to say it wouldn't connect anymore, but that's alright with me - for now.

  • I bought a mac 2 days ago and transferred some files on there using migration assist which I did not want to. How do I restore my imac to factory settings so I can start again?

I bought a mac 2 days ago and transferred some files on there using migration assist which I did not want to. How do I restore my imac to factory settings so I can start again?

Look in /Users folder. You can go to System Preferences > Users & Groups, open the lock and "-" delete the account it created.
This is a problem whenever you use migration assistant after the initial install. The proper way to run Migration Assistant is in Setup Assistant when you first boot your Mac. I don't know why Apple isn't clearer about this issue.

  • Migration Assistant problem: Lion to Lion does not work

Background:I have a 2 year old 15" MBP. I just purchased and tonight am setting up a brand new 27" iMac 2.7Ghz i5.
I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion the day it was released on the MBP. A day later, I purchased the iMac which still had Snow Leopard so I used the "up to date" program to get a free version of Lion. I did a clean install of Lion on the iMac since it was brand new.
Problem: I connected the MBP and iMac via Ethernet cables connected to my Airport Extreme. Migration Assistant worked on the initial steps, finding the MBP and matching the authentication codes. After that, I get to the screen where the iMac is looking for files on the MBP and calculating the size of folders to move. On this screen (on the iMac side), an error box pops on and off many times for about a minute then stays there with the following: "Your other Mac stopped responding.    Make sure that all of your network devices are connected and turned on. If you cancel the transfer, use Migration Assistant to complete the transfer later.      Looking for your Mac..." It only gives me the button to "Cancel Transfer"
My connections were fine. I was able to connect until this point. This issue happens whether the connection is Ethernet network via Airport Extreme, both connected via Wifi from the Airport Extreme, or connected directly via Firewire 800. I've tried everything I can think of. No solution and have not found this issue here or on any other forum.  Any ideas?  I really want to use the Migration Assistant route with this. I've use it before on previous Mac's with no issues.

I just talked to the Apple support and they suggested to try the migration using Time Machine. That's was also my idea  this morning so I'm trying to do this now.
For the Apple support I add the repeating part from the console here:

  • New Imac Migrated from MacBook - TimeMachine will not Work

I used the setup assistant and migrated my macbook over to a new IMac.   Everything A-Ok except Adobe (of course!) and Time Machine.
I started a backup and it ran for over 24 hours.  Seems to just hang.  The back up is "In Progress".
I tried to delete it to start fresh but Time Machine simply locks up.
For the record I use Setup Assistant on the Migration.  Running current lion, I updated after migration.  I failed to mention that ITunes is not working, checking discussion board for that now.
    Please Help!
    Thanks

Sounds like you've got more than one problem.
If the backup won't cancel, see #D6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
What are you backing-up to (directly-connected external HD, Time Capsule, or what)?
How much free space is on it?
A clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • Migration Assistant in Lion won't recognize Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard

I just got an iMac with Lion. I am trying to use the Migration Assistant to move my files/apps etc from a Time Machine backup to the new computer.  The MA will not recognize the backup drive - (external firewire 800).  I can see the backup drive on my desktop but it does not show up as an option to choose in the Migration Assistant.  Any idea what might be wrong.  The backup is from an iMac running Snow Leopard and all the system software was last updated on Dec 9th. It think it is as current as I could get with Snow Leopard. Any ideas what is wrong?
    Thanks,
    Chad

This happened to me after hard drive replacement under the Seagate Drive Recall at the local Apple Store. Here's what I learned from the process:
I Wagged the Mac home, fired it up (with naked OS installed at the Apple Store), and it wouldn't see my Time Machine drive with Setup Assistant - not on firewire 800 nor USB. Just a grey spinner that lasts forever. When I try just continuing anyway, it offers me something that looks plausible, but then puts up a dialog about duplicate user name, and no matter what I enter, it always says "that user already exists". So I think - maybe Migration Assistant. Complete the setup, create an account, watch the nice welcome movie. BAM - there's my Time Machine drive on the desktop. OK - it has to work . . . but no. Same behavior in Migration Assistant, plus the new OS offers to start making backups on my Time Machine disk - it's not recognizing it at all.
So - back to the Apple Store - let the genius figure it out. It turns out there are multiple problems. First, the "genius" who imaged my new machine picked 10.7.2 but my machine had 10.7.5 - turns out, it's not enough just to have right cat. Even a point release older OS may not recognize a newer Time Machine drive. The guy at the desk said "We have images of everything but the 10.7.2 has free iLife in it, so they like to use that one". What the heck? They don't image what you had originally as a matter of sane process?
Having figured that out, we re-image 10.7.5 at the store thinking we've fixed it. But no - Setup Assistant still won't see the Time Machine drive. Not on USB, not on Firewire. Not in a box, not with a fox.
So here's the second trick - newer machines have a recovery partion. see: http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/  Boot with the option key held down, pick that partition, then you'll get a "system restore" option, to restore your whole system from a Time Machine backup. My drive was recognized by the recovery partition restore process when neither Setup nor Migration Assistant would. Obviously, there's something broken in Setup/Migration Assistant.
    Takeaway:
    - if you're getting a drive replaced by Apple, make sure they image *exactly* the same OS
    - if Setup Assistant fails, use the recovery partition for system restore
    - Use Recovery Disk Assistant http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433 NOW to make yourself a recovery thumb drive just in case. With Apple's new "no media" approach to the OS, you're hosed without it.

  • HT204350 Migration Assistant in Mavericks does not allow User account migration

Users accounts do not show up at all.

After a similar problem I found http://www.hardturm.ch/luz/2014/02/fixing-os-x-10-9-mavericks-migration-from-ext ernal-volume/ which explains that since Migration assistant logs you out, it also unmounts external disks. As AtlNCS Admin points out, they have a solution in using ssh and command line stuff to mount the needed disk remotely, but someone in the comments had a simpler solution: do not plug in the external firewire disk until after launchine Migration Assistant. So before running MA, eject the external disk that you want to migrate to the new machine (and unplug it) then start Migration Assistant and after selecting "migrate from an attached disk" THEN plug in the disk. It worked for me.

  • New iMac Setup, Used Migration Assistant, now things don't work

Hello! I bought an iMac yesterday and set up Migration Assistant bewteen my 2009 MacBook Pro and iMac. Everything seems to be working correcctly, except iMessages and Mail. iMessages will not sync with my phone, and now the iMessages on my phone doesn't work either--I have to send them as text messages. I've tried toggling the Messages tab on my phone off and on and it still doesn't work. It worked just fine--on both iMac and phone--before the migration. It seems to work on my iPad.
As far as Mail: I had it working just fine before using the migration, and afterward it wiped everything clean from the program. When I open it, it prompts me to add accounts. When trying to set one up, it either immediately closes or it pops up the "Accounts" section on System Preferences. I've tried deleting all of the accounts and readding them and that doesn't work either.
At the moment, these are the only two issues I've encountered. Help?

  • Migration assistant problem w/ Itunes not opening

I just bought a new IMac with 2 HD. 1 solid state 256G and 1 regular 1TB drive. I tried to transfer all my information from my Macbook aluminuim with no firewire using the migration assistant with my last update copy of the time machine backup in an external drive. I went Ok, however the installation was done in the 256 D and went almost full (it never appeared and option of where to install) My intention is to have the system and applications on the Solid State and the rest in the 1TB.  I create a new user folder on the 1TB and copy with the finder all the files and folders of my user. Then I change in account the path of the user folder to the new one. Corroborate it on the finder and delete the original user on the solid state. Applications and system remain on the solid state. Then I change all the rights and privileges of folders in library and system to my user giving full permition. It worked fine since I could open correctly agenda, mail and ical. However, I have problems in Itunes. When i tried to open it it says it cannot be done for the permition. When I look up for Itunes folders rights It doesnt appear my user and when I try to change this (as in the rest of the folders) doesnt give me even the option of doing it. I tried to download a new Itunes but then when trying to open the dmg. it says that the installer is corrupt. Any ideas in how to fix this?
    Jans

Hmmm...that is an interesting question. It shuts down now, but would not before? Perhaps Norton was busy doing something. To be totally honest, I hate Norton, its expensive and a HUGE memory hog. My PC ran much slower when I was using Norton. Since removing it and going to a free antivirus program, it has speeded up tremendously.
Depends on what you disabled during MSCONFIG. Whatever you disabled was most likely the culprit to that as well.

  • Migration Assistant from PC did not migrate Outlook files

    Hi All,
Bought my wife a MacBook Air for her birthday, I loaded Office 2008 but didn't setup Outlook. I used Migration Assistant to transfer her files and settings from her PC which was Windows 7 with Office 2007 SP2. After the xfer, I logged into the newly created account, but Outlook does not have her mail or contacts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ray

Figured out what to do, just manually copied the pst file from the old system and imported it. A little ugly but worked.
