Migration assistant interrupted

I got all my music transferred just fine.
It got to the Pictures, and got stuck on "14 hours and 19 minutes remaining" for a while. Then aA window popped up on my PC to say it needs to reconnect to the mac.
BUT -- my Mac says it's still connected.
The PC window doesn't give me any options except to "cancel transfer." I can't simply close that window or "ignore".
SO: How do I find out on my PC where it's been disconnected so that I can reconnect rather than canceling the transfer?

Yes you can delete the "corrupt" users files. Also, make sure that account is not listed in the Accounts System Prefs. If so, you can delete that as well.

Hello, I have been working on a friend's PowerMac G4 QuickSilver 933 MHz. Her 60 Gig IBM DeskStar ("DeathStar") HD was failing. We installed a new drive and fresh copy of MacOS 10.3.5 from retail CDs and updated to 10.3.9. We had the old drive in an external FW enclosure and were using Migration Assistant to copy over her two users. The first user came over fine but about halfway through bringing over her stuff (she was the Admin) the drive died!
Here is the problem. Her user folder only has a few of the needed folders/files/applications. For example, there is no "Applications" folder. So when she logs herself in and launched Safari, nothing happens because there is no Safari.app in her Home folder. Her Home folder is corrupt.
We created a new user for her under a different name. This seems to work OK. Can we delete her original "Corrupt User"? Will there be admin problems?
    What's a Mother to do? Thanks! (:-)

  • HT4796 the migration assistant keeps getting interrupted

Hi I'm a brand new Mac userer and I am trying to transfer my data  from the pc to my mac using the migration assistant however everytime I run the intallation it gets interrupted. I don't know what is interrrupting it. I've turned off all windows automatic stuff. Any suggestions thanks

Are you using wifi to migrate?

  • Migration assistant continues to get interrupted.

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro 13" Retina. I tried 4 times to migrate files from my PC to the Macbook. The migration would start, then somehow get interrupted after an hour or two. Both computers are set to "never" go to sleep so that's not what's interrupting the process. It never gets passed the "7 hours remaining" mark. What is going on?

    Likely copy protected.
Avoid Migration Assistant if all possible.
Install programs from fresh sources and use a Firewire cable to T boot the old Mac's hard drive to the desktop of the new Mac and simply drag and drop contents of the users folders into the new folders. (example: contents of Pictures, Movies, Documents etc)
Use the same setup name and hard drive name of the old machine, this way when you replace the iTunes folder all the playlists will be correct.

  • Interrupting migration assistant from imac to macbook pro?

i am currently using migration assistant to transfer information from my imac to a recently purchased macbook pro. unfortunately i didn't investigate enough before starting the process and i didn't expect it will take me 5 hours to finish. my question is: can i interrupt the process without damaging the computers or files? if so, how?

thanks Kappy for your quick reply. my biggest dilemma is that is about 1:33am, and i am contemplating to stay awake until early morning. still 4h:53min to go for the transfer tonbe completed. another related question: when i turned on my macbook pro was not prompted to install the software that came with it. instead i started with setup assistant that led me to migration information. i even didn't set up a new account or email in my new macbook pro. do you think once the migration is over i'll be prompted to install the software? by the way, my imac is relatively new (purchased in march this year)------- any thoughts? do you think i was not prompted to install the software because the imac software is update?

  • HT4796 I keep trying to install the migration assistant from pc to mac and the software will not install.  It continues to get interrupted.

I am trying to install the Migration Assistant that will transfer my Itunes accout from a PC to a MABookAir.  The install is interrupted and unable to complete.  Would someone be able to walk me through where the glitch might be?

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
    *Firefox 8.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.

  • Steps to take after interrupting Migration Assistant?

Earlier today I was 1/4 through migrating some files with Migration Assistant between two intel-based imacs via Wi-fi when a thunderstorm passed by and I felt compelled to shut the computers down. I quit Migration Assistant on the receiving computer first, sending computer second, and then shut both down. I have a few questions about this:
    1) What complications might this have caused?
    2) Is it possible to tell what files were transferred?
    3) If I used Migration Assistant to transfer the same categories, would the files that have already been transferred be overwritten?

Possibly no consequences depending upon what you were transferring at the time. If system files then the computer may not boot.
You cannot tell what hasn't or has been transferred.
Starting anew and allowing for completion shouldn't present any problem.

  • Can i interrupt migration assistant air

    Hi
My existing macbook and new macbook air have been transferring info since yesterday morning via wifi/Migration Assistant.
They have been goin at it all night and still have 10 hours to go. I'm appalled.
I have to leave shortly to go on a trip and need a laptop with me. I was hoping it would be the Air but that obviously can't happen.
If I pull the old Macbook out will I have to start the whole transfer again from scratch? Would it harm the donor Macbook?
    Thanks
    Ian

It should not harm the donor Macbook. Here's a recommendation for the next time you try it. Migration Assistant is not real reliable over wi-fi. Back up your Donor Macbook via Time Machine onto an external drive. If you've never done this before, it may take a few hours--just a few, not  nearly so long as this.
If you then hook up that drive to the Air, and use Migration Assistant to copy onto it the Time Machine copy, it should take you no longer than about thirty minutes to an hour for the Air to become a clone of the original Macbook.
Also, don't be too sure that the copy hasn't already been made. When you stop this and cut off the Air from the Donor, you may find that Migration Assistant hasn't told you the whole truth. Time estimates and such are made moment by moment by the computer and aren't always reliable. They may even be completely wrong thanks to some glitch or other. Maybe the transfer has happened.
Have a good trip with whichever computer you take--and sorry Migration Assistant was a pain.

  • Can I change the way that I connect my two computers using migration assistant whithout interrupting the process

I am in the process of using Migration Assistant to transfer my 2008 MacBook Pro to my MacBook Pro with Retina.  I am currently using USB to transfer and it is taking a long time (as expected).  I am trying to increase the speed of this process.  Am I able to connect ethernet to thunderbolt without stopping the process? Can I just plug in the cable and not have the hault the process, but speed it up? Thanks!!!

Since you're just sending data, it won't "mess" things up, but you "may" have some cleanup on your hands, depending on what's been transferred. If you want to stop: Command + Q on both machines.

  • Migration assistant stalled

I am using migration assistant from a Macbook to a macbook air. It had gotten to 15 mins remaining, and then jumped up to almost 4 hours, and has been stalled there for a few hours now. This is after running all night and working fine to transfer files (via wireless internet). Do I need to restart both computers? What can I do to prevent this next time? The progress bar is almost at the end, and it is working on transferring application folders now.
    Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Restart both Macs and start Migration Assistant after restarting in order to transfer the files that weren't transferred. It's easy to get interrupted the migration when you are using Wi-Fi, and that's why I recommend other ways to transfer your files with Migration Assistant. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889

  • TM Backup isn't listed in Migration Assistant - help!

    Hello all,
The WD hard drive in my 24" iMac (Jupiter) recently crapped out. Apple Care to the rescue! They replaced the drive and loaded up a fresh install of 10.6.1. I came home with the intent to just restore from my Time Machine backups. But...
My backups aren't showing up in Migration Assistant, while the backups from my wife's MacBook are. The facts:
    * My backups are there, but don't display in Migration Assistant.
    * My backups, admittedly, excluded system files, but my understanding is that I should still be able to use Migration Assistant to restore user accounts/files, etc.
    * My wife's backups are there, and do display in Migration Assistant.
    * My wife's backups do include system files.
    * In my backup folder (Backups.backupdb/Jupiter) there is a fairly large file called "2009-10-25-173341.inProgress", but it does not contain enough of a backup to be useful.
    * The "Latest" backup is 2009-10-25-164450, but the folder in there only has the Applications and Developer folders, whereas every other backup folder (2009-10-25-143643 all the way back to 2009-2-26-185723) contains what I would expect to see; Applications, Developer, Library, Users, and a few extraneous files.
My question is: what do I do? I've tried a couple things already, but with no luck:
    * I copied the "2009-10-25-173341.inProgress" file to the Desktop and deleted it from the Backups.backupdb/Jupiter folder, in case it was confusing Migration Assistant; this had no effect.
    * I tried changing the "Latest" symlink to point to the backup that I think is valid (2009-10-25-143643) by copying over 10.5's version of fsaclctl (doesn't exist in 10.6) to disable ACLs for the Backups.backupdb folder, but it didn't appear to have any effect as far as Migration Assistant was concerned.
Is trying to get my backups to show up in Migration Assistant a lost cause? Would I be better off trying to manually copy files from the last full backup (2009-10-25-143643)? Please help; your time and help in this matter will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Lee

I think that's true, but hope once this is sorted out you'll remove that exclusion.
    * In my backup folder (Backups.backupdb/Jupiter) there is a fairly large file called "2009-10-25-173341.inProgress", but it does not contain enough of a backup to be useful.
Yes, that's a failed or interrupted backup. The full restore option, Setup Assistant, Migration Assistant, and TM's "Star Wars" interface will all ignore it.
That's likely the problem. Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant only look at the last completed backup. (Why nothing else is there is separate mystery.)
+*Never, ever, move, change or delete anything in TM's backups via the Finder.+* This may not have caused damage, but it's possible to hopelessly corrupt your backups that way. And do not try to put it back.
Ditto. That may have been the "kiss of death." Change it back if you can.
Is trying to get my backups to show up in Migration Assistant a lost cause? Would I be better off trying to manually copy files from the last full backup (2009-10-25-143643)? Please help; your time and help in this matter will be greatly appreciated!
First, do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on your TM volume.
Then use TM to try to delete the 2009-10-25-164450 backup. (See #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.)
That might then let MA see the 2009-10-25-143643 backup. If so, immediately go buy a lottery ticket -- you're one lucky fellow!
If not, your only remaining option is probably to try copying via the Finder. That's going to be rather "iffy" and, especially if you have a multi-user setup, will give you all sorts of permissions problems on the copied items.
    Good luck!

  • Migrating Assistant

    Hello guys,
I tried to use the Migrating Assistant from an iMac to a MacBook Pro transferring only the MUSIC folder from the iMac to the MacBook Pro over wireless. As you realize I made a huge mistake because it was transferring very slow and it would take more than a day to finish, so I hit esc on the MacBook Pro and interrupted the process,it only gave me a message "it is recomended you don't stop the process now, are you sure you want to quit?" so I stopped the process since no other warning was given.
Is it possible I corrupted any "original" files on the MacBook pro since it was only music folder, can I can check it somehow or should I perform a hard disk format and reinstall the system? Is it necessary? Any suggestions? It seems to work fine and it transferred a few songs already just fine.

It shouldn't have had any effect on the original folder/files, connect them with a Firewire cable then restart the iMac while holding down T to force Target disc mode. It will then appear on the MBP Desktop as a volume and you can run Migration Assistant and have it work much, much faster.

  • Migration assistant crashes when restoring time machine backup from mountain lion

    Hi
I installed a new HDD in my MacBook Pro Mid 2009, installed the original OS again and tried to import using the Setup/Migration Assistant. It told me that since the time machine backup is newer, this can't be done. So I first upgraded to Mountain Lion (suspecting that I can install my SnowLeopard TM-backup there) and tried the same. The migration assistant started, found the image (on Tiime Capsule) and started to calculate the items that need to be transferred. After 17hours, I interrupted it.
Next thing was to upgrade the old HDD with mountain lion, create a fresh TM backup of this on an external USB drive and try the same. It finds the image, identifies the files (about 420GB), I can see the users, all fine. When I hit Next, it starts to calculatate of locate the files. I assumed that my drives were not the fastest ones so I did expect it to take a while. This time I interrupted it after 34hours as it was still giving me the "progress" bar.
For all I know, I have a TM-Backup of Mountaion Lion and a freshly installed Mountain Lion and I am using the Apple software for transfer - perfect world, no?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    patPfe

The migration assistant or the original backup?
I tried WiFi, Ethernet and on the second attempt with a fresh backup on a USB drive.

  • Migration Assistant-can't find files

I have used migration assistant. When it was running I was able to see another user account with all the files. The next day, I cannot find any files, and there is no other user account than the main one I have. I know the files are somewhere, because the info on my hardrive says 31 gigs are occupied. It is a brand new computer so I assume that is 31 gigs from my migrated files. I have repaired permissions and still, no other user account and no view of the files. Thanks.

    1. When I looked in the User folder on my new harddrive the old user name appeared with I think noindex attached to the user name. There were files that I could actually copy into another user folder.
    2. There were more than 1 user on the Older Mac, but I was only migrating one user.
    C. I checked only to migrate files and folders and network settings. No applications.
I manually did create a main user account when I first booted up the new computer. I also loaded some software that I needed for immediate work. It was a bit later that I migrated. I first started a migration that I then realized was going to take some thirty hours, so I aborted it. When I started migration assistant the second time, it asked if I wanted to resume the interrupted migration. I said no so that it would begin again. The first time I did include applications, and I then decided only to migrate files. So I started what I thought was a clean migrate. There was a messsage at the end that said network settings and some other system info could not be transfered. It said migration was complete.
