Migration assistant : issues if transferring from 10.4  to 10.5 computer ?

I am on the process of migrating from my MBP "first gen" onto my new MBP late 2008.
My source MBP has 10.4.11, the new is 10.5. of course. I plan to do this via firewire.
Which problem may I have during migration ?
Any compatibility issue with ITunes, Safari, Mail, office 2008 etc ..?
What will happen to the files and folder that are on my desktop ?
: I need to get the exact same computer content and preferences in any of my applications.
Thanks for any advice !
Luc

If you do an Archive and Install then follow the following procedure. Check the option to preserve users and network preferences. This will transfer your Home folder to the new installation. Your old system will be preserved in the Previous System Folder located at the root of the hard drive.
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Migration Assistant Error Some files from ".journal" could not be transferred?

    Hello, world.
A few days ago I replaced my the 97% full 100GB hard drive in my Dad's Core Duo 2.0GHz Macbook Pro with a 500GB but I received an ominous error at the end of the Migration Assistant transfer.  Here are the steps I took:
    1.  Replaced physical drive.
    2.  Booted up from OS X Snow Leopard disc.
    3.  Formatted new drive as OS X Journaled using Disk Utility.
    4.  Installed OS X Snow Leopard on the new drive.
    5.  When prompted by OS X Installation, I selected transfer data from another volume.
    6.  Placed the old drive in an enclosure and connected via USB.
    7.  At this point I let Migration Assistant take over.
It took an hour and a half or more to transfer the data and everything SEEMS fine.  However, at the end I received the following error message from Migration Assistant:
    Errors and Warnings:
    - 2013-11-02 16:15:49 -0400 Some files from ".journal" could not be transferred
    - 2013-11-02 16:15:49 -0400 Some files from ".journal_info_block" could not be transferred
I have searched around but I've been unable to find any information on this.  In other instances of these warnings, people seemed to be pointing the finger at moving from PowerPC macs to Intel Macs but this was Intel-->Intel.
I did find someone suggest one other thing in another thread:
"My reading of those error messages indicates that there's something wrong with the journaling files on the PB. I suggest that you disable and reenable it on the PB"
However, I do not know how to enable or disable journaling without reformatting the drive from scratch as journaled or non-journaled.
    (post found here:  https://discussions.apple.com/message/8675337#8675337)
Question:  Should I be worried and does anyone know specifically what this error indicates?  Is it possible that my dad's old hard drive was NOT formatted for journaling and MA was looking for these journal related files and unable to find them?
Thank you all in advance for your help,
    Nick

What options did you select for Migration Assistant to transfer? For instance, did you select network & computer settings?
"Opt" sounds like the name of a folder, not a file type. On your 13" MacBook, do you have any folder by that name, especially in your home folder?
Also, have you run Disk Utility's *verify disk* check on the MacBook's drive?

  • Migration Assistant Copied System Preferences from a Third HD!

I used Migration Assistant to copy files off an iMac and onto a new HD in a MacPro. I purchased a second HD for the MacPro especially for this occasion because I wanted to leave the original MacPro HD intact. At this point, I had two HD's in the MacPro. After installing Snow Leopard, Migration Assistant copied all files and users as expected but something very strange happened:
    1. iMac is 10.6.5 but new HD has 10.6
    2. System Preferences were taken from the existing HD in the MacPro
I knew there was something wrong because the desktop image was from the original MacPro HD.
What's more annoying is that I completely wiped the new HD using Disk First Aid and removed the original HD from the MacPro so I could start the entire migration process again. Before quitting Disk First Aid, I noticed that it said 800mb had been used even though I had zero'd out everything.
Again, for the second attempt I decided to remove the original HD from the MacPro and just leave the new drive in there, but it did it again.
    1. Question - If I had assigned Migration Assistant to copy files from the iMac HD why did I end up with System Preferences from the original MacPro HD?
    2. Question - After completely removing the original MacPro HD from the machine, why did Migration Assistant set up the new HD with the System Preferences on an HD that I had completely removed from the machine?
I know all I have to do is use Software Update to bring it back up to 10.6.5 but it's really annoyed me because now I am wondering about of all the 500 gigs and what files may have been affected (hopefully none). I've had a quick look through the contents but I won't be able to tell because there are so many of them. And do I really want to spend time digging around in the Library of the iMac to copy across the System Preferences to the new HD and then remove what shouldn't have been there in the first place? I don't think so, and I shouldn't have to.
I do wish Apple would have their software do what it says and not go digging around on another HD that was lying dormant for this exercise, especially after removing it for the second attempt. It's wasting so much of my time.
Any thoughts, opinions, excuses and remedies would be greatly welcomed.
    Thanks in advance.

You mean you installed OSX on the new drive. Apparently you used a 10.6.0 disc.
Then, presumably, your Mac re-started (from the new disk), you set up a user account, then started +Migration Assistant.+
Migration Assistant doesn't install or copy OSX; whatever version of OSX you put on that drive is still there.
    2. System Preferences were taken from the existing HD in the MacPro
    Extremely doubtful.
You have an extra user account (the one you set up after installing OSX and before doing the Migration). Unless you changed it, that account will have the default desktop picture.
Are you sure the account you transferred has a different desktop picture than it did on the iMac? If so, is it the default?
What's more annoying is that I completely wiped the new HD using Disk First Aid and removed the original HD from the MacPro so I could start the entire migration process again. Before quitting Disk First Aid, I noticed that it said 800mb had been used even though I had zero'd out everything.
Yes; that's the partition map and empty directories.

As above, I don't think you did. Be sure which account you're logged-on to.
For best results, start over, and use +Setup Assistant+ instead of +Migration Assistant,+ so you don't end up with extra accounts. See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), and note the green box there.

  • HT4889 Migration Assistant unable to transfer from OS 10.4.11 to Mountain Lion

I am following the instructions here
How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_USto migrate from OS 10.4.11 to Mountain Lion, but Migration Assistant gets stuck looking for my old computer. This occurs after I select "From a Time Machine backup or other disk".
My old computer is in Target Disk mode and visible in the new Macbook's Finder, so the Firewire cable is OK.
I also tried migrating from a 120 GB hard-drive backup through the USB port. Still no luck.
I am running Tiger on my old Powerbook G4, and Mountain Lion on a MacBook Pro.
    Any ideas?
Any good guides to transferring the files manually?
    Thanks
    Seth

It is not a good idea to wholesale restore your entire home directory from Tiger to Mountain Lion. If Migration Assistant had worked, you would have a nightmare on your hands with incompatibilities in the home library folder.
Here is what I would do:
Use Target Disk Mode to mount the old Tiger Mac on the new Mountain Lion Machine installation.
Ensure that the original files have the same user id and group ownership between both machines.
Get the Tiger home directory files to the ML home directory
Do not drag and drop folders from Tiger, that already exist on ML. Drag the contents between folders. The reason is that folders created by ML, may have different permissions and lower level access control list settings than their Tiger counterparts.
Do not move the contents of the home Library folder on Tiger at all. You are asking for mayhem if you splatter this over its counterpart on ML.
You can drag and drop any folders that you created on the Tiger home directory to your new home directory on ML.
Do not drag any Tiger applications to the new Mountain Lion installation. They are incompatible, and you need current revisions with confirmed ML support.
    Unmount Firewire Target disk mode.
    Start using ML.

I used the Migration Assistant to move data from my Time Machine to my new Mac.   Most data seems to have been transferred successfully but none of my iPhoto pictures have been transferred.
My Time Machine now shows the earliest available Back-up to be after the Migration Date.   My iPhoto pictures seem to have either been lost in the migration process or are locked in my Time Machine prior to the earliest back-up date now accessible.
Any advice on recovering my old iPhoto pictures would be greatly appreciated.

First go to iPhoto Preferences, look in both General and Advanced tabs to make sure that things are set to import from camera into iPhoto.
Then if that doesn't help, connect the camera and open Image Capture in your Applications > Utilities folder and see if you can use Image Capture to reset the import path from the camera to iPhoto.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's the classic behaviour after using Migration Assistant and that's normal.
To transfer the data from the new user account to your old user account, you can follow some steps. Here is all the information you need to do this > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472

  • Using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook

When using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro, that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook, will emails, contacts and calendar entries be moved to Outlook on the new MacBook or into Mail, Contacts and Calendar?

I doubt they will. But then I'm not sure as I used a migration program once about 18 years ago and totally FUBARed the system I had at that time and I've never used one again.
For me the reason to have a new system is to start fresh. Installing only program that I now use and manually copying data over from the older system.
Not sure your older version of Outlook, and the outlook mail boxes, are compatible with Office/Outlook for Mac 2011.
A better place to ask this question would be on the MS Office for Mac forums.
Hope it all works out for you.

  • Has anyone used Migration Assistant to move services from one system running Server to a new system?

So, I've purchased a Mac mini to replace my aging Mid 2009 mini on which I've been running Mavericks Server.  In trying to answer the question of how best to move services from the old machine to the new, I've stumbled into the fact that Migration Assistant can apparently migrate not just user data for workstations and laptops, but also service data for servers.  The problem is there isn't much detail in the docs about how good a job it does when going from one machine to another without changing OS releases.  There's a very detailed document in the KB about going from older versions of Server to new (OS X Server: Upgrade and migration from Lion Server or Snow Leopard Server) and a general doc on migrating from another Mac under Mavericks (OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks) but that has no details about Server.
Has anyone used Migration Assistant to move services from one system running Server to a new system?  Are there any details that are particularly important to get right?  Are there things that require manual steps after Migration Assistant is done?
There are other ways I could tackle the problem, of course.  I could simply swap drives between the systems, but the new system has two drives that are bigger, faster, and I intend to mirror them.  That would complicate such an approach.  I'd really like to keep the conversation constrained to a discussion of Migration Assistant as the primary method.

yes. I migrated a server frm lion to mavericks following these notes a while back:
OS X Server: Upgrade and migration from Mountain Lion
i do not recall having any problems with it.

  • I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my imac to macbook. Using either a firewire or network, as I'm waiting to select items to migrate, I receive an error message that "the application quit unexpectedly". My imac is newer.

I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my newer imac to an older macbook (10.5.8).  I keep getting an error message "application quit unexpectedly" as I'm waiting to select the items to migrate.  I've tried using a firewire cable as well as just a network connection.
    Thank you.

    Here is some information:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
It mentions that migration is not supported with 10.4; now you said you have 10.5 - it may be the same problem. Besides, migration assistant will recognize an older system and move apps etc. over to a newer system - I'm not sure it will do the same thing in reverse.
And, there are a couple more problems: one is that your newer versions may not be backwards compatible with the old 10.5 and the second is that is you are trying to copy apps so you can use them on both, it most likely violates the SLA (unless you purchased them on MAS).
So, if none of those two apply, I'd simply try target disk mode (without the assistant) and drag over the apps.

Have you set both to never sleep?
Is the source (old) Mac's software up to date (including the Migration Assistant for Mac OS X Snow Leopard update)?
Is the old Mac healthy?  Have you run Verify Disk on it lately?
The estimates are wildly inaccurate under the best of circumstances.  How long has it been stuck?
