Migration assistant keeps crashing?!

Okay, I need urgent help before I pull ALL my hair out.
I recently bought a new Macbook Pro Retina and am trying to do a migration from my old Macbook Pro (2010) to the new one.
Every single time the migration assistant stops on the NEW Macbook Pro while checking for data. I get past the password stage all fine, then it starts to check and closes and logs me out of the account so I have to log back in and start all over. Super frustrating!
I've tried the following solutions:
- Ensuring all software/updates are up to date
- Allowing guest account on the new MBP to access shared files/folders
- Connect by ethernet cable
- Connect by wifi
- Tried repairing permissions in Disk Utility
PLEASE HELP !!

See the green box here -> http://pondini.org/OSX/SetupLion.html.
Follow the instructions to get a 'do-over' using Setup Assistant.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • Mavericks Migration Assistant keeps crashing.

Just got brand new IMac. (2.7GHz Intel Core i5 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3). Upgraded to Mavericks to match my MacBook (strangely didn't come pre loaded). When trying to use Migration Assistant to transfer profiles, software, settings etc across Migration Assistant on the iMac keeps crashing. Have tried both wifi and Ethernet cable (wifi switched off) but still no success and MA continues to crash at point when  iMac is checking the MacBook

If your computers have the required ports, try using the Target Disc Mode.

  • After using Migration Assistant, printing crashes any app

    Hi Folks,
I just recently added a new HD to my G4, installed Tiger 10.4.3 on it and successfully used the Migration Assistant to pull all my user info from the older HD that was running 10.3.9
    Hurry for me, right?
Well even all my printer info copied over, but none of them work. When I try to print from any application, it crashes the app.
We have 2 Konica network printers that I can connect to either via AppleTalk or IP, neither option works even after I delete the printers and reinstall them. The printer IPs are static BTW.
I also made sure I was using the latest drivers from Konica.
    Any ideas, similar experiences?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    933 GHz G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.5GB RAM

The newest printer is less than a year old but it doesn't work with LPD and correct queue name either.
It seems deeper than just these printers.
Even if I reset the printing system and only add the Adobe Acrobat Printer it crashes. I fear some died during the migration and is corrupted, i just don't know what it is.
we have 2 other Macs running Tiger and they print fine.
no changes to our network either. We have an Apple Basestation, but it has a static IP.

  • Adobe Download Assistant keeps crashing

I was trying to install adobe creative master suite trial on to my mac but adobe download assistant continued to crash before it opened.
I am using the latest version macbook pro and i have attempted to download other program trials but it does the exact same thing.

Try turning off Automatic Graphic Switching in your Energy Saver Preference pane.  We are investigating an issue with Apple where Adobe AIR has had difficulty with this setting turned on.  This could explain why the Adobe Download Assistant is crashing.

  • Why does the migration assistant keep extending completion time?

I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer from a MacBook running 10.5.8 to a new MacBook Air, but the file transfer time balloons first, then reduces, then balloons again and doesn't ever reach the completion stage.  Any thoughts before I take the issue to the Genius Bar?  Thanks.

It could be part of OS X's Resume feature. Any app that is open at shutdown will re-open on boot unless the tick in the following image is deselected when shutting down/restarting:
Also check that Migration Assistant isn't listed in System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login Items.

  • Migration Assistant keeps locking up

I have tried three times to migrate my PB17 to my brand new iMac 20" with iSight. All three times, the migration chokes when the iMac says I have 1 hour 35 minutes to go on the migration. At that same time, the PB17 (in target disk mode) appears to lock up (the firewire logo quits moving around on the screen).
I "chatted" with Apple tech support last night and couldn't figure it out so I'm coming to you folks for help.
Oh, another thing, since I have an accout as myself (Tark Bunch) on BOTH the iMac and the PB17, the migration assistant doesn't like this, so I have to re-identify the PB17 user as someone else before continuing with the migration (in this case I become TarQ Bunch). This seems to enable the migration to start, but never allows for a successful migration.
Apple tech support asked if I had updated the firmware on the PB17 (I haven't, but assume it is up-to-date with the software updater). They also asked if I had the fileVault on (no I don't) and they thought I should run disk utility on the PB17 (which I haven't had time to do yet).
looking forward to suggestions (better yet, solutions
    -Tark

Royal Pain is right, but sadly, this was what I had to do to migrate.
I took your advice, hooked the two computers together via Firewire, with my old computer in target mode.
I then dragged directories over. By this approach, I ended up with the old computer locking up during the transfer. I finally traced it to a corrupt jpg.
Since I had already moved a lot of files accross to the iMac, I then purged those files off of the old PB17.
I emptied the trash, rebooted and attempted migration again. I deliberately did not migrage Applications and the Migration went off without a hitch.
All my stuff was on the new system (except the files I had purged) and my iTunes database remembers what I played last and how many times
It would be sweet if Migration assistant could run a diagnostic to find these files and save ourselves a lot of work, but maybe we are the rare exception (My wife's and kid's migrations went well with no hitches...)

  • Migration assistant keeps getting stuck

    Hi Everyone
I am trying to perform a migration from my apple mac book pro Mid 2010 (OS X 10.9.4) to my new apple iMac 27" (OS X 10.9.4) Late 2012 Model. I perform the migration using the thernet cable yet at about 1:40 mins remaining it seems to stop.
Any thoughts of how I can make this work?
    Please help

Press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly to restart. Test. If the migration wasn't successful, see below.
    1. Migration may stall with "Sharing Only" user accounts
    2. Back up the old system with Time Machine or Disk Utility and try migrating from the backup.

  • Migration Assistant over ethernet crashes with wifi turned off

I am attempting to migrate data from one macbook (early 2008, 10.7.5) to a newer macbook (mid 20180, 10.9). Both systems are fully up to date. The connection I am trying to use is a gigabit ethernet connection and both systems are connected to the same gigabit ethernet hub and they booth have an IP address. Before I start Migration Assistant on both systems, I turn off wifi. I then start Migration Assistant on the newer macbook and get it to the point where it is looking for sources. I then start the Migration Assistant on the older macbook and set it to transfer data to another mac. At the newer macbook I can now see the older macbook and select it. I then see a code on the newer macbook and then on the older macbook. I select continue on the older macbook and continue on the newer macbook. At this point, I am assuming that the newer macbook is attempting to get a listing of users and settings to update. This is when the Migration Assistant on the newer macbook exits. The screen goes gray and then I see the login screen. It doesn't matter the order that I start Migration Assistant on the two macbooks, it always dies in the same way. The only way to get Migration Assistant to get to the point of selecting users and settings is to let the wifi connection stay on on the newer macbook. Unfortunately, I don't think that the newer macbook is using the gigabit connection to get the data. The estimated completion times goes all over the place, 2 hours, then 6 hours, then 24 hours, now 26 hours, after 2 and a half hours wall clock time. I also don't see any lights at the gigabit ethernet connection. I guess my question is two-fold:
    1. Why is the Migration Assistant crashing? I can't find a log file conspicuously named that contains Migration Assistant log settings. By the way, I feel that Migration Assistant should have an option similar to the Installer that allows the user to see the log file messages while it is running.
    2. How can I force Migration Assistant to use the gigabit ethernet connection?

What I have seen that I didn't mention is that Migration Assistant would always complete after many hours. I do have confidence that it would copy files over no matter how slow it was going. The fact that I could get Migration Assistant to crash just by turning off wifi before starting it is a little troubling but not critical at this point. What I was more concerned with was how to make it use gigabit off a switch rather than directly connect it (question 2) and how to ensure it was using gigabit ethernet by examining a log file (question 1). Since I already had gigabit connected, I was never asked to connect them together as you mention.

  • After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external back-up? Following Apple advice for use of Migration Assistant did not work creating similar issues leading to clean install.

After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external hard drive?
Following Apple advice I used Migration Assistant which crashed new system twice which is why I had to clean install Lion in the first place.
Is there a sure way of doing it?
I have only a few programs that I will have to install myself and that should not be a problem.
I just want my data, music and photos back where I can use them.

Time machine backups. I went to migration assistant a few hours ago and limited my selection to "users", no need for applications, settings and other files.  Stuff started moving over at a fast pace but has now seemed to stall.
I will let it run overnight as there are lots of songs and photos as well as a few movies.
If that does not work, then I will go into TM and try restore. I have restored some things in the past such a mail files and it has worked well.
The Apple fellow at the store told me to go right into TM, he may have had a point. I'll get it eventually.

  • Migration assistant to transfer data from PC - Windows 7 to MAC Book Pro running Mavericks

    Hello Gurus,
I am having toruble using the migration assistant to transfer my data from my PC windows 7 to MAC book pro Mavericks.....
The MAC window for migration assistant keeps searching the source computer..... and windows PC says waiting for the MAC to connect...

I had the same problem, I solved it by turning off the firewall on both the PC and my MacBook Pro. It worked immediately after that. Hope that solves your problem too.

  • Migration Assistant doesn't see USB Time Machine drive

My dad recently got a new MacBook Pro and wants to restore from his Time Machine backup, stored on a USB drive. He didn't use the Setup Assistant at the start - I'm really not sure why, but anyway...
Now we're looking at Migration Assistant, and it can't find the Time Machine drive. On the 'Select your disk' screen, the wheel just spins and spins. The backup drive is plugged in and mounted. We've checked the drive for errors using Disk Util, and it's fine. Moreover, I tested this with my own MBP and it's backup drive and the same problem occurs.
He also tried booting from the install DVD and using the 'restore' option from the Utilities menu, without success.
Is this because he has started to set up the machine using a user (as admin) with the same account name as the Time Machine backups? This website suggested that maybe that's what happening: http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html. Before I take him through a reinstall, etc, I'm hoping to confirm that this is really the problem!

Just create a new user account with a different name. Logout of the current account and log into the new one. Be sure the new account has admin status. You can then try migrating and see if it now works. Also see OS X 10.5- Migration Assistant keeps "looking for other computers".
See User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.

  • Migration Assistant showing 0.0kb User Profiles

    Hi all,
My iMac hard drive recently died, but I have been backing it up to Time Machine to a backup disk, so I'm trying to migrate my user account to my friend's MacBook. However, Migration Assistant keeps displaying these user profiles as having 0.0kb. Why is this? It seems to just hang when I attempt to migrate data. Also, how would I go about migrating just the settings and permissions of the profile, and keeping the rest of the data on the drive?
    Thank you for any help

  • 10.10.1 Migration Assistance Problem

    Hi guys,
I got a new MacBookPro Retina and wanted to migrate all my data from 2011 MacBook Pro 17". Both are running 10.10.1 (Build 14B23). Unfortunately, new MBP after trying to read old machine shows following message and migration fails to show even the folders to copy. Tried safe boot and got the same results. Same results with LAN, WiFi and Thunderbolt.
Any ideas how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Szymon.

So Migration Assistant is crashing? Perhaps there are crash logs on the remote system?
Do be aware that the currently shipping version of OS X Yosemite is 10.10. I believe the TOS here prohibit talking about pre-release OS X versions. It's likely you'd be recommend to try replicating the issue on 14A389 first, which could prove challenging

  • Migration Assistant on Windows Vista keeps crashing

After using my MacBook Air for several months, I've been trying to bring files over from my old HP Pavillion using Migration Assistant. On my Mac, the app identifies the PC, but continues to look for other resources. On the PC, it continues to wait for the Mac to connect. Both units are on my home Wi-fi network. Someone suggested connecting them by an ethernet cable that connects to the Thunderbolt port with an adapter. I've done that, but the same problem persists.
Should I disconnect both units from my Wi-fi network and use the cable only?
Can anyone please help me out? Thanks

You may be able to fix this issue by holding down Ctrl+Shift as you launch iTunes which should open it in safe mode with this message:
Click Continue, then close iTunes and reopen. It may open normally now.
See also HT203206: iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues.
Otherwise for general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
