Migration Assistant Network Problem ?

I have been running Migration Assistant for about 2 days now using firewire from MacBook Pro to iMac Now it keeps coming up with "Might be problem with network" I have checked all passwords reset Router and Time Machine and both computers are able to communicate through them It now says about 12 hrs 33 min remaining and sticks at that but still "Might be problem with network" If I shutdown and reboot both computers will it start from where it left off or at the beginning again? Help please !!

This setup should just be using a Firewire cable connected between the two Macs, with the iMac running Migration Assistant & the other Mac in FireWire target disk mode. Networking connections & devices like Airport, Time Capsule, routers, etc. should have nothing to do with it.
For this setup, make sure you choose the Migration Assistant option to transfer data 'From a Time Machine backup or other disk' & not either of the options that mention a Mac on a network. Before you start Migration Assistant, put the other Mac in target mode & make sure it shows up in Finder.

I am trying to Migrate information from my iMac to my Macbook Air, the Migration assistant network setup is asking for a passcode from my macbook air, how do i find this passcode??? can anyone help please...

I do hope you're connected via Ethernet -- migrating via WIFI is quite slow and not too reliable.
You need to have Migration Assistant running on both Macs; one generates the passcode for you to enter on the other one.

I need to download Windows support software, but just keep encountering a problem which says "Can't download Windows Support Software because of a network problem." What should I do? I have the same problem.  Anyone out there?  Hello?

  • Migration Assistant/FireWire problems.... I'm not sure which

I've searched through many of the posts on this subject and I've not found anything similar so I thought that I'd try posting the question.
My lovely wife just bought me a new iMac for my birthday to replace my very old and very abused (also read... incredibly slow iBook G4). I didn't do MA when I first booted it up as I didn't own a FireWire then.
I just bought a FireWire yesterday, plugged it in to both computers and brought up the MA program. It seemed to recognize that that a computer was connected to the other end as it told me to reboot it into "FireWire" mode. I did that and then it never could hook up to the computer again. I've attempted it many different ways and times.
Frankly I'm at the end of my rope and I've been transferring files via BlueTooth just to get some of my old stuff on the new machine.
Hopefully, this is an easy problem for someone out there.

Also if you read in the back posts, Migration Assistant doesn't work well between PowerPC and Intel Macs:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350&tstart=10
I would say one of the symptoms is just as you've said, it basically times out forever.
Please don't post any more "me toos". If you have a problem and it is not related to solving the original poster's thread, there is a way to post a new topic in this link:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1219&start=0
You'll get a wider audience, and won't confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them.

  • Migration assistant, Network Settings, and Printers

When you use migration assistant, and you uncheck the box to migrate network settings, does that mean printers are not transferred? Are printers considered part of "network settings", whether they are local or actual network printers?

Printers are not part of network settings. Network settings include the preferences configured in Network preferences and the preference files for the network from /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/. Printer settings are part of the Print & Fax configuration. They will be transferred unless you choose not to migrate preferences.

  • Migration Assistant INSTALL Problem

Having not been able to run, on my Windows 98 machine, oa2owiz-
8_1_5_0_0.exe downloaded from this site, OTN sent me the free CD-
ROM version, along with Oracle8i disk set for Windows NT (sic!).
The later with just to give me the the Universal Installer.
    1) I unzipped using oa2owiz-8_1_5_0_0.exe FROM THE CD (does
    this make a difference).
I first unzipped to my Oracle install directory, so
    everything installed in D:\orawin95\TEMP
When I ran into the problem described below, I unzipped
FROM THE CD into the suggested default: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP. Both
ways, I get the same problem:
    2) When I put in the Oracle8i CD and executed setup.exe (thereby
launching the Universal Installer) and then
    3) pointed the installer to (either of the above) directories
on my machine with the products.jar file that was just
unzipped. When I hit 'Next' I get:
"Invalid staging are. There are no top level components for
Windows 98 available to install from this staging area."
FWIW: The above message message would appear, after the install
thermometer appeared briefly, if I used the full path to
    the .jar, for instance C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\products.jar.
If I omitted the file name, I wouldn't even get the thermometer,
and the (sooner appearing-no thermometer) message was:
"There was a problem opening the staging area.

The Oracle Migration Assistant for MS Access is not supported and
thus not installable under Windows 98.
It is only installable under Windows NT and Windows 95.

  • Migration assistant restore problem with time capsule

    Hi People,
I have the weirdest of all problems. Let me explain what happend and you will be as amazed as I am now.
    ======
I have been using a 2TB time capsule for about a year and a half now. Every day for 18 months everything was being backupt. Everything smooth no problem.
My 27" iMac needed a fresh install at home because I have been upgrading from SL to Lion and thing got a bit odd. So this is what I did in a nut shell.
    1. Bought a new 27" iMac Quad core with 12 Gb ram etc. (I bought it for my office)
    2. At home started up the new iMac and the migration assisant asked me what I wanted.
    3. Did a full restore from the TC and all my user data was restore to the new iMac!
=== Hurray so far, evrything worked liked it should.===
This was my test, now I was confident to erase my "old" iMac and do a full Lion reinstall and then use migration assisant to restore all files.
It worked with the new iMac so nothing to loose.
So I erased the new iMac, boxed it again and took it to the office.
Now It was time for my old iMac to be reinstalled.
    =====
    4. So I erased my "old" iMac.
    5. Did a clean Lion install from DvD.
    6. Did all software updates (as I had done with the new iMac).
    7. started Migration Assistant
    8. Pointed to the time capsule and did everything like the day before
    9. Got an error message.
    =====
***?? I tested this it should work. Now ALL my data is gone. All my movies, honeymoon, kids growing up, etc etc etc etc.
    Everything gone gone gone!
So now I can browse to the TC and see the sparsebundle file. It is 1.5TB. I can show package contents and see the files, I can go into the "Bands" dir. and see a bunch of files. But I can not repair, mount, use disk utils with the sparsebundle.
The data must be in the 1.5 Tb file but I have no way of accessing it.
I need some good advice / help from someone because my whole family history is gone at this moment  .

That's usually the last thing to try.    Depending on what was wrong, simply installing a fresh version of OSX would be likely to fix it.  If not, finding and addressing the actual problem would probably be much better than starting with the "nuclear" option.
    5. Did a clean Lion install from DvD.
    6. Did all software updates (as I had done with the new iMac).
    7. started Migration Assistant
It's much better to use Setup Assistant when your Mac first starts up after installing OSX, to prevent Problems after using Migration Assistant.
    9. Got an error message.
Was that the "some backups cannot be opened" message?  If so, try to repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Migration assistant unusual problem

    Hey guys,
So I bought a refurb 2011 15' mbp recently and i was trying to transfer files from my 2008 aluminum macbook running lion (10.7.4).  Because migration assistant told me it could not transfer files from my old computer (which was running newer software) to my new 15' pro I set up the new mbp, updated the software and then got my free download of mountain lion.  After that was done I connected the two computers via ethernet and ran migration assistant.  Everything went well, the files transferred (I moved every file including my user account) but at the very end it told me that there was a file that couldn't be transferred (it was something like Error: 2012 Firstname Lastname --> my user account 8-5-2012 - 00000011 was not compatible).  On my old computer it did not display any error messages, according to it my files had transferred successfully.  When I logged back into the admin account on my NEW computer, it looked like only the applications and some pictures made it through.  No documents, media or settings.  Migration assistant DID NOT create a separate account on my new computer but the odd thing is that when I looked up the disk space available on my NEW computer it showed that the HD had been filled with something but it was classifed as "other" (under about this mac --> available storage).  What do you guys think went wrong and is there anything I can do to fix it without wiping the HD and starting over?  Thanks!

  • Migration Assistant Update Problem

I have have an old G4 PowerBook running OS X 10.4.11 and want to migrate all the data to a new iMac running OS X 10.7.2.  On the new machine it says to upgrade the migration assitant on the old machine.  I have looked all over and anything I have found won't install b/c it says the machine does not qualify for the update.  I also tried connecting the old machine to the new with a firewire but it does not appear on the new screen.  I hate the idea of having to drag everything back to the store, any ideas how I can pull all the data off the old machine to the new, or how to upgrade the migration assistant on the old machine so the new machine recoginizes it?
    Thanks

Did you use FireWire Target Disk Mode to start the PowerBook? Start the PowerBook while holdig teh t key, and keep holding until you seea display that looks something like this:
At that point, the hard drive of the PowerBook should be visible to the new Mac as an external hard drive. MA should work but, if it does not, you can still manually move items.
NOTE: by default, the Finder preferences may not allow external drive to show up on your new iMac. Go to Finder > Preferences and check the box for showing external hard drives:
When I upgraded to a 27-inch iMac (10.6.8) from a G4 MDD desktop Mac (10.4.11), I manually dragged the entire Documents folder from the G4 hard drive to the iMac. If you have already used the new Mac enough to have important files already in the new Documents folder. you may wish to do the dragging on a folder-by-folder basis, then file-by file. Takes longer but is very safe.
Note that OS 10.7 will not run older programs written for the PPC processors. If you have such programs, you need to upgrade them to versions with native Intel code. Example: Office 2004 will not run under Lion but Office 2008, that had both PPC and Intel code, will.
Due to the age and OS disparity between a PPC Mac running 10.4 and an Intel Mac running 10.7, you are better off to update programs than to use MA to migrate them.

  • Migration Assistant Filemaker problem

    Hello, can anyone help,
Here at work I've just got a faster Mac, i transferred my user account from the old machine with Migration Assistant.
If i open a local file everything is fine, but if i open a remote file from our FMP server it starts to load then crashes FMP
If i log-on with the original account from the faster machine everything is fine, i deleted all the FMP prefs, keychains and re-installed FMP9, still crashes!!!
I also called FMP support but they don't know
    Anybody got any ideas?
    Thanks
    Ian

What I'd try is, open a local file, save it remotely, quit FMP, restart, try loading the remote file you just saved, if that works, compare Permissions on one that does & one that doesn't.

  • Migration assistant -- causing problems on new iMac?

I got a new 20" iMac yesterday. Specs are 2.16Ghz, 1 gig RAM, 128 meg video memory. I transferred all my settings and data from my mini using the mini in target disk mode with the firewire connection. I've had to reinstall a couple of drivers but other than that everything seems to have transferred fine. However, the iMac seems sluggish at many tasks and is doing some quirky things. A good example is that right now, I just mapped a drive on my Windows PC and it mapped fine but the "Connecting to Server" status window is still up and won't go away. It also seems to be slow opening some apps, etc. Could transferring everything from my mini have caused this? Would it be better to just reinstall OSX clean and install everything from scratch? Could the problems be because I migrated from a PPC Mac to an Intel?
I have 2 gigs of RAM on order so I know that will help but this seems like a bigger problem than just a lack of memory...
    Thanks
    Todd

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you fixed the problem. Now, get a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup/clone, using Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc. That will mitigate future problems when updating stuff.

If it's a free update, search Apple's support site for it and move the dmg as you would any file. If it's a paid upgrade, no; the Mac App Store upgrades, while downloadable, can't be downloaded from a Mac which can't use them.
