Migration Assistant on Setup s-l-o-w

I am transferring data from mac mini to macbook pro via ethernet. It's only about 50G of data, but the MA estimates some 33 hours. Any ideas what's wrong? I transferred from another mini to imac a few months ago, some 300G and it took only 45 min.

I've switched from ethernet (apple recommended) to firewire, and from setup assistant to migration assistant. Made sure everything was up to date, etc... now my source mac (mini) isn't seeing the target mac (macbook pro)...sigh.
Thinking of going back to setup assistant... at least they found each other there...

I am trying to Migrate information from my iMac to my Macbook Air, the Migration assistant network setup is asking for a passcode from my macbook air, how do i find this passcode??? can anyone help please...

I do hope you're connected via Ethernet -- migrating via WIFI is quite slow and not too reliable.
You need to have Migration Assistant running on both Macs; one generates the passcode for you to enter on the other one.

  • Possible to restore iTunes safely to a new mac (from time machine backup) without using setup/migration assistant?

    Hello all,
I have just acquired a new MacBook which I want to set up completely fresh. The only data I really need to restore/copy to it, besides a few document folders, is the iTunes library from my existing iMac. The iTunes library has been backed up using time machine on the iMac (using a portable drive). I’ve heard it might be possible for me to plug the time machine backup into the new MacBook and then option-click the time machine icon in order to 'browse other backup disks' and then restore iTunes. Would this work and would all my devices still sync with iTunes? I’m just a bit nervous because apple has migration assistant and setup assistant for doing this sort of thing - I just really don’t want to use them because the only thing I want on my new MacBook from the whole of the time machine backup is literally the iTunes library. I don’t want to start restoring user accounts which you must do with the assistants.
    Thank you.

Thank you ever so much for the replies. Just one thing: the link you provided seems to discuss restoring individual items on the computer for which a backup has been made. On my macbook I can't click "enter time machine" which I'm guessing is because the time machine backup is for my old iMac (hence my comment about control clicking the menu bar).

  • Using Migration Assistant to move to a new MacBook Pro generated 80 GB of additional data that cannot be traced on the HD

I used Migration Assistant to setup my new MacBook Pro (Retina) and to transfer my user account from my 1-year old MacBook Pro. Both computers have the same harddisk (500 GB SSD), but the new one now only has 85 GB of free HD space, whereas the old one still has 168 GB free space.
The space seems to be from files that show up as "Others" on the HD, but the large folders (music, movies, photos, documents, system, library etc.) are the same size on both computers.
Does anyone have any idea where the extra data could come from? I assume that languages would be stored in the System or Library folders, so even if I had deleted all unused languages from my old computer (which I may have done a year ago, I am not sure), this should not result in a more than 80 GB difference in free space, should it?
I would be glad if anyone had an idea where all the data may come from or how to get rid of it. Thanks a lot.

I'd get an external, bootable FireWire enclosure, put the new HD into it, ensure it runs the MBP, and then swap.
One thing to consider going forward: the new MacBooks (annoyingly!) do not have a Firewire port, so it might be a good idea to consider dual Firewire & USB 2 external drives/enclosures for future purchases. It won't matter for this swap but it will help avoid buying something that can't be used with any new Macs that don't have Firewire.
An low cost alternative for those that just need a temporary way to mount an external drive for uses involving only Intel Macs are the newish bare-bones USB drive adaptors, such as the NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter. The advantage to these gizmos, besides low cost, is that they work with both ATA & SATA drives. Some, like the NewerTech model, also support other devices, like some optical drives.

  • Some of my applications and/or folders got corrupted after using Migration Assistant

    Hello,
Had an iMac with Snow Leopard installed (1 single admin user).
Also had a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard installed (1 single admin user).
Got everything transfered to a single brand new MacMini with Lion pre-installed using the following method:
    - Started the new Mac Mini from scratch and used Migration Assistant during setup process to import ALL data from old MacMini (user, applications, settings and other files) using ethernet connection.
    - This went perfectly well with 1 or 2 minor errors regarding 1 or 2 startup items but resolved with erasing and re-installing them.
    - Applied all available Software Updates to get an updated version of Lion (10.7.5)
    - Then launched Migration Assistant from the new Mac Mini to import ALL data from iMac (user, applications, settings and other files)
    - This went well as I got the same message than previous transfer (all data was transferred OK)
    - Also got another message saying some X folder was not compatible with targeted system and same with some CHUD folder.
I finally got my 2 admin users gathered onto the single new Mac Mini in 2 separate admin user sessions.
If an app was already transferred from the old Mini but also installed on the iMac it did not get transferred from the iMac thus keeping the Mac Mini version.
For such apps I have permissions issues and some of the folders used by the 2 different admin users such as /Movies or /Documents are locked depending on which user session is opened.
I tried repairing permissionsusing Disk Utility but with no success.
I also tried to delete and re-install these applications but it did not work.
Last chance was to grant full access attributes to the related folders via their information panel or System Preferences (User & Groups tab) but it did not work either.
Could somebody please explain the background for this issue and how could I solve it?
I am thinking of re-installing Lion from scratch, transfer the old Mac Mini again (ALL data) and then import iMac user but only USER data (not applications and settings). Would it work?
Thanks for any help you could provide,
    François

I was finally able to fix this by using a couple of preference management utilities. Either I missed a key preference file for each app, or there are some hidden preference files, but when I used the prefence management utitilities (such as Preferntial Treatment, PrefEdit, Defaulter, or PlistEdit Pro) I was able to look at the prefs for Firefox and Photoshop CS2 and see where the hostname for the my old G4 was listed. (in the case of Photoshop CS2 it was actually in the list of recently opened files!! I should have noticed that from within Photoshop)
Now that I've removed those entries from preferences both Photoshop and Firefox run without prompting that the old G4 had to mounted.
oh, also... I found that for both Photoshop & Firefox I could actually get them to work without mounting the old G4's root volume - it just took clicking past the pop-ups (about 10 of them for each app) and waiting a long time as it searched around for the next one (maybe about 10 minutes total ... normally I don't have time to waste like that, but I got curious and made the time).
Thank you for your suggestions. as I had suspected, Migration Assistant moved some preferences from the old G4 that had it's hostname embedded and for some reason the apps weren't clearing them out when they were launched on the new machine (again, odd since I didn't have Migration Assistant move the apps from the old G4 to the new G5 - I installed each app on the G5 as a new install (aka: a "clean install") to avoid just this type of problem).
My real thanks are to the authors of the above mentioned preference management utilities.

  • Which FireWire Cable for Macbook Pro to Macbook Pro Migration Assistant?

    Hi,
I've just purchased a new Macbook Pro 15" (standard - not retina display) and am planning to transfer my files via the Migration Assistant. My question is, I currently have a mid 2009 macbook pro (2.8GHz, 4GB) and was wondering which firewire cable I need to purchase - there are so many different types!
    Thanks!

Hold T and boot the old Mac's drive to the desktop of the new one or do so during Setup Assistant or later with Migration Assistant.
Setup Assistant runs only once, at first startup when fresh out of the box or when freshly reinstalled from scratch. Migration Assistant is a regular application found in the Utilites folder.
If you're going to move all your stuff over, the easiest and least problematic way is via Setup Assistant. Since the computer is in a completely blank state when SA runs, it can create identical user accounts, permissions, etc., as the original source. MA is an app that runs on an already configured and running system and, hence, can't duplicate user accounts, modify permissions that are already in use, etc.: this can cause vexing issues for new users that may not be to well versed in multiuser operating system administration.

  • Migration assistant problems - 10.4.11 to 10.6.4

We just purchased a new Mac Mini (10.6.4) to replace the old Mini (10.4.11). I've tried to do the Migration Assistant multiple times this week.  I can get as far as the "transferring data" message with a progress bar and a time estimate. The problem: After 5-12 hours, the time never changes! Today I even tried transferring just a few files - 1.6GB - just to see if it would work better with fewer files. The time estimate told me it would take 13 min. After 5 hours (we left the house), the time estimate had changed...to 26 minutes!  What am I doing wrong?
Here's what I've done so far:
    - Updated OS software on source computer.
    - Installed 2008 Migration DVD CD share software update (running 1.0.6 on the source computer)
    - Both computers are set to never sleep or go into energy saver mode. Even turned off screen savers.
    - Connected computers via Firewire 400/800 cable - 5 or 6 attempts with no progress
    - Also tried wireless connection - 2 attempts, both time network connection failed.
    - Tried the "Internet Sharing" instructions on the Apple Support site. Didn't work either.
    - Source harddrive mounts on new computer's desktop. When I double click on it to try manually transferring....new computer freezes up and I get the never-ending spinning circle.
I'm only trying to transfer about 50GB. Judging from others' posts, that should take me 2-3 hours. Right? I've run migration assistant on other computers before and never had any trouble. Is there some update I'm missing? What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks for your help!

rather than migration assistant, use setup assistant - even if it means going for the "second chance" per this user tip.

  • Migration Assistant x-fer?

I just initiated Migration Assistant to transfer my applications from my older iMac to my newer one. Is this a true transfer process, meaning my source iMac will now be devoid of all those applications (which I want them to remain) or is it a copy process whereby applications will now reside on both machines?
There's 7 hours and 14 seconds left fot the migration so I have time to change my mind. How do I safely stop the process if I need to?
    Thanks

Once the migration is complete the two machines will be mirrors of one another. However if you have PPC based apps on the old machine even though they will be copied to the new machine if the new machine has Lion on it then they will not run. I would have recommended using Setup Assistant rather than Migration Assistant though. The are cousins, similar but different. The primary difference between Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant is SA does not create a second user account whereas MA does. You missed one opportunity to run SA when you initially turned on the new machine. However if you want to use SA instead you can. If that interests you please read Pondini's Lion Setup Assistant tips starting at "Second Chance...."

  • Migration assistant restart

Fired up new iMac today and migration from Windows XP PC to iMac stopped after 3 hours.  That was using wireless on the iMac.  So now trying to restart with wired connection but iMac says 'looking for other sources' and PC 'waiting for you Mac to connect', for 10 minutes.  Is there something I need to do to allow this process to restart?

As a general rule of thumb NEVER use wi-fi to migrate using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant. In your case I'd recommend calling AppleCare for advice, you have  90 days of free telephone support when you buy any new Mac.  If the first technician is not able to help, call back or ask that your case be escolated.

  • Migration assistant all or part

I have a new MBP Retina that I'm trying to set up from an older MBA & MBP.  Is it possible to use migration assistant only selecting the files you want?  Or is it all or nothing?
Trying not to completely double or triple up things as there are parts of the 2 older Macs I want to transfer.

You can transfer whatever you want with Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant. It will let you choose what you want to transfer from your old Mac or an external drive. See > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
If you use Migration Assistant, it will create a new user account with the transferred files, so go to  > Log Out, and log in with the new user account. If you want to merge user accounts, see > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472

  • Migration Assistant Update

I am trying to install Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Lepard dated Aug 2011 on my MacBook Pro Ver. 10.6.8 in order to copy my files and folders over to my new MacBook Pro Lion. I downloaded the Migration assistant upgrade however when I try to install it I receive an installation error message: "Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Leopard can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for the update" Why is this occuring?

As a point of clarification, I believe this statement is incorrect. Migration Assistant (and Setup Assistant) are in fact designed to migrate from an older system to a newer one, and I would guess this is the most common use.
    That's correct.
Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant will transfer from an older "major version" of OSX to the same or a newer one, such as Snow Leopard to Lion or Lion to Lion.
It will also transfer from any "minor" version to any other "minor" version within the same major version, such as 10.6.0 to 10.6.8, or 10.6.8 to 10.6.0 (although it's not recommended to go backwards, as in some cases file systems have been changed and some apps won't work properly).

  • Restore from disc vs migration assistant

I have a new macbook pro coming any day now, and I want to transfer everything from my macbook on over. I know I could do this with a firewire cable and migration assistant, but I dont have time to wait for one to come by mail, and I dont want to pick up one from the campus store for a total rip off price of 20 bucks (especially since I can anticipate using it only once).
I have a clone of my macbook disc made with superduper!. Can I use that to transfer everything over to the new mac? Something involving disc utility, I suspect, but thats about as far as I can get.

Migration Assistant and SetUp Assistant don't overwrite the system installation. They just automatically bring over user settings and data duplicating the users/settings on the new computer and putting personal data where it belongs. Using the SetUp Assistant that launches when you first start up your new computer avoids some possible account issues. SetUp Assistant doesn't have to deal with an existing user account on your new computer while Migration Assistant does.
There is a little more information about migration here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773#faq1
If you use Migration Assistant I would be more inclined to migrate from a Carbon Copy clone rather than a Time Machine backup just because Time Machine software is so new.

  • Why are Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant forcing me to copy everything from an old mac?

    Hi,
I just bought a new Mac Mini (Late 2014, ships with Yosemite) to replace a defunct MacBook Pro (Late 2008, last ran 10.8.5).  I have a local administrative user account and some server and network data that I want to migrate from the latest Time Machine backup of the MacBook Pro to the Mini.  I don't want to copy anything else to the Mini.  Neither Setup Assistant nor Migration Assistant will let me deselect anything though.  All the check boxes are greyed out.  Clicking on them does not uncheck them.  This forces me to copy everything from the Time Machine backup to the Mini.  Then the Mini won't restart.   It won't even boot into safe mode.  It just gets stuck in a reboot-loop until I enter recovery mode, wipe the system drive, and reinstall Yosemite.  Does anyone know why those check boxes are greyed out and how to fix them.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support and let them deal with it.
