What's wrong simply installing programs from fresh sources so they are pristine, then copying files to a drive and walking over and plugging it into the new machine and copying them again?

I'm having trouble using migration assistant to get data from a windows pc over to a macbook pro mavericks. It can't resolve finding the sources wirelessly.

I have installed migration assistant on the pc. I am running it as administrator. It says waiting to connect to Mac. I am running MS on the macbook pro (brand new) and it found the machine but keeps saying looking for other sources and I can't move ahead. Any ideas?

Can I use Migration Assistant to Copy files from one mac to another, but not delete the original files off of the original Mac?

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro Retina, and I have an old Macbook Pro w/o Retina and wish to use migration assistant. I still want to use the older Macbook Pro and keep all the files on it, but copy them and also put them on my new Macbook. What I'm trying to say is, can I use migration assistant to move files to a new Mac, while keeping the files on the old computer?

You can omit some broad categories, but you can't pick and choose individual items.

OSX: Connecting to admin session not working anymore since 8.0.12

It seems to me that connecting to console session does not work anymore since the recent update to 8.0.12. Had no troubles before the update, now it does not connect to the console session but a normal one. Please fix this.

Thanks for your reply. I mixed up terms. I cannot connect to the "admin session", in my last message I used the term "console session", sorry about that. Connecting works, but it connects normally instead of the admin session. Checkbox
"Connect to admin sesssion" is active.
In the logs I found the following message. Not sure it's related to my problem.

After Effects CC (OSX MAVERICKS) Slow Over Network

We just upgraded everyone at our small TV studio to CC.
We are opening an old AE CS6 project in CC, so it converts the project to CC and we resave it.
We are having a HUGE issue where the entire AE program becomes laggy to any user input. (click a layer, it takes 3-4 seconds to be selected. Type characters, 3-4 seconds to update, Click a menu, it takes 3-4 seconds to open, etc etc) Any user input takes a very long time to actually work in the program, so it is unusable.
Here is what I figured out so far:
-I still have CS6 installed on the mac and when I open the project in CS6 it works beautifully.
-When I open the project in CC but do not connect to the network (and therefore have missing footage), everything also works perfect as far as user interaction.
-Once I relink my footage, AE CC becomes laggy and unusable.
So it seems by that evidence that something has changed from CS6 to CC, and for whatever reason CC is slow to look over the network for the footage and each user interaction causes the large wait in program response. Moving footage locally to the computer fixes the problem, but we cannot work that way as we have TB's of footage on the network that is shared.
We have not encountered anything like this in Premiere CC, or Audition, seems limited to AECC.
AE has the latest CC updates downloaded/applied.

I am not an expert in networking, we just have the most basic of networks, our dept has 6 Mac pros , with one designated for network rendering / storing common footage. We just connect through finder to the render Mac so nothing third party going on.
It's something different with cc vs. Cs6 and it has happened on all of our machines. Back in cs6 still works smoothly.
My thought was maybe cc checks all footage differently on every action and since we are pulling so much from the network it was slow. The main comp has maybe 40 layers, with other precomps in it.
Last resort is to format and reinstall osx and all our software but it's a guess and one that would involve a weekend of unpaid work on my part ugh.

OSX Mavericks keyboard volume buttons not working on MacBook. Help.

Subject says it all. I think they broke it! Keyboard voume up/down and mute buttons don't work on OSX Mavericks. Sound is just ON. Volume can be adjusted from the System Preferences, but that is very inconvenient.

Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
Then try the volume.
Safe Mode deletes system caches that may help.

Java for Mac OSX 10.4 Release7 will not work with eTrade Market Trader

After the latest update to 10.4.11 wich was the latest version of Java the java applet will not start. Talked to eTrade tech support and found out that their site only supports up Java1.6. Now I am trying to update my Mac Pro to 10.4.10 but can not find the update anywhere that is not bundled with the latest version of Java. Called Apple support, they did not have a solution, so to all you experts how can this problem be resolved ?

Thank you for your response. I spent 2 hours on the phone with an Apple Tech, he was really good and we went through all the possibilities (thank god for Apple Care Plan). He even got others involved but we all could not come up with anything else than to do an 'Archive-Install'. I did repair permissions several times. My Mac was running great prior to the update, I actually own 7 Mac's and I am very meticulous with maintenance and backing up everything. By the way I love these things. But when the new update came out, I told everybody to backup and then update the Mac's. Now I have 1 Mac that runs 10.4.8 and 6 that run 10.4.11. They all work great and are in great condition, but the only one that can run the online trading platform is the one running 10.4.8 and all the others have the software to access my .Mac account. Since I have these Mac's indifferent locations (so I can travel without lugging one along) I enjoy using all the .Mac features. Everything was so easy before "Java for Mac OSX 10.4 Release 7" came out. I am just really frustrated. I just wish I could go back to 10.4.10. But all the updates are bundled with the Java release 7. Is there any place where I can find 10.4.10 ?

OSX 10.9 & ethernet port not working

Before I upgraded to OSX Mav 10.9 on my MBP 13" mid-2010, my ethernet port worked fine. Yesterday I plugged in using the ethernet for the first time since the upgrade and it doesn't work. The Network app says "unplugged" even though it clearly is. The router doesn't show a green light either when connected to any port. I know the cable and router are fine (both checked using a PC).
Am I the only one or is this a more common issue?
If so, is there a fix?

let me reiterate. 27 ' iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo just updated to 10.6.6 uses AirPort to access the internet. Set up to share it's internet connection via ethernet with PPC Dual 2.3 G5 running 10.5.8. Up until the 10.6.6 update things were fine. After updating the iMac's OS, the PPC lost it's internet connection. On the PPC's network System Prefs, the built in ethernet is connected and green. The iMac is in the finder under Shared. On the iMac, the PPC is in the finder under Shared and in Network settings the ethernet connection has a self-assigned IP with a yellow light. I have reset and rebooted all settings and devises on the network with no resolve.

typically on OSX I remap any shortcut keyboard and work.
In "Microsoft Remote Desktop (MSRD)" it work too but still exist previous keystrokes
OSX > System Preferences > Keyboard > App Shortcuts > Add - Application:"Microsoft Remote Desktop", Menu Title: "Close Connection", Keyboard Shortcut:"Alt+Shift+W"
now I can close with "Alt+Shift+W" but with default "Cmd+W" too and that is not OSX behaviour so I think it is BUG in MSRD.
Q how can I fix it?

Please try to reinstall the app and check whether there is any difference. Also please check whether the Keyboard layout is set properly as per the specified language. You can go through beneath article for information.

Can't update to OSX Snow Leopard - CD drive not working

Ok so I purchased Snow Leopard to upgrade my 09 Macbook with Intel Processor. However, my disk drive is not reading disks for some reason so it wont read the disk or any other. I've tried downloading the file and running it, but it tells me that I have to do it from a disk. I can't seem to find a workaround to not having a disk, yet my computer won't read any.
Is there anything I can do or should I shell out the cash for my disk drive to get repaired? Any help would be much appreciated!

If you have access to another computer you can make an ISO/Disc Image using Disk Utility and transfer that to your computer using a portable drive or storage device with large enough capacity. Once that Disc Image is copied to your Desktop you click on it and it behaves exactly like it is a DVD in your drive. It appears in Finder like a hard drive or a DVD. OS X will respond to it accordingly. I have installed huge multiple disc programs in what seems like 10% of the time because DVD drives are relatively slow compared to something immediately accessible on your system drive. When you would have to eject and insert the next disc the Installer automatically sees the next Disc Image (when you have a series of installation discs) so it can all be performed in a single uninterrupted process.

Hp Printer 4500 networked not working correctly after 7 to 8.1 migration

After swiiching over to a new hp computer running 8.1 from old hp runing 7. The hp envy 4500 network printer fails when doing multiple pages. It prints about 1 ot 2 pages then dies on a partial page. Have installed and reinstaled envy software on pc and first from disk hten hp website. any ideas

Migration Assistant fails me again

It seems every time I rely on Migration Assistant it bites me in the a**.
In the past, it wouldn't recognize certain partitions on an external drive.
This time, I thought it shoud be straighforward. My MacBook went in for repair and came back with a new hard drive. No problem, I thought. I'll just use Migration Assistant to get my files from my iMac (10.4.9, Core 2 Duo).
I booted the iMac into Firewire mode, and it mounted on the desktop of my MacBook, but Migration Assistant wouldn't budge, complaining that the attached disk does not have a partition with OS X on it. Huh???
Nothing I could do could cajole it into recognizing it.
Why does Migration Assistant have so much trouble. If the OS sees the drive, why can't Migration Assistant?
