Migration Assistant over ethernet crashes with wifi turned off

I am attempting to migrate data from one macbook (early 2008, 10.7.5) to a newer macbook (mid 20180, 10.9). Both systems are fully up to date. The connection I am trying to use is a gigabit ethernet connection and both systems are connected to the same gigabit ethernet hub and they booth have an IP address. Before I start Migration Assistant on both systems, I turn off wifi. I then start Migration Assistant on the newer macbook and get it to the point where it is looking for sources. I then start the Migration Assistant on the older macbook and set it to transfer data to another mac. At the newer macbook I can now see the older macbook and select it. I then see a code on the newer macbook and then on the older macbook. I select continue on the older macbook and continue on the newer macbook. At this point, I am assuming that the newer macbook is attempting to get a listing of users and settings to update. This is when the Migration Assistant on the newer macbook exits. The screen goes gray and then I see the login screen. It doesn't matter the order that I start Migration Assistant on the two macbooks, it always dies in the same way. The only way to get Migration Assistant to get to the point of selecting users and settings is to let the wifi connection stay on on the newer macbook. Unfortunately, I don't think that the newer macbook is using the gigabit connection to get the data. The estimated completion times goes all over the place, 2 hours, then 6 hours, then 24 hours, now 26 hours, after 2 and a half hours wall clock time. I also don't see any lights at the gigabit ethernet connection. I guess my question is two-fold:
1. Why is the Migration Assistant crashing? I can't find a log file conspicuously named that contains Migration Assistant log settings. By the way, I feel that Migration Assistant should have an option similar to the Installer that allows the user to see the log file messages while it is running.
2. How can I force Migration Assistant to use the gigabit ethernet connection?

What I have seen that I didn't mention is that Migration Assistant would always complete after many hours. I do have confidence that it would copy files over no matter how slow it was going. The fact that I could get Migration Assistant to crash just by turning off wifi before starting it is a little troubling but not critical at this point. What I was more concerned with was how to make it use gigabit off a switch rather than directly connect it (question 2) and how to ensure it was using gigabit ethernet by examining a log file (question 1). Since I already had gigabit connected, I was never asked to connect them together as you mention.

  • Problmes with wifi turn off with disable greyish in window 8.1 pro 9600

    Hi,
I updated window 8 to window 8.1 pro build 9600 version.
I am getting a problem with WIFI turn off disable grayish color which cannot be enabled.
WIFI adapter is installed and working properly.
Plz suggest what will be the fix of this issue.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Did you mean the Adapter is greyed out and we cannot click to turn on it? Is there a wifi switch on your laptop? If so, please turn on it first.
Also please try the network troubleshooter to see if the issue can be fixed:
    1) Right Click network icon in taskbar and select "open network and sharing center"
    2) Highlight wifi connection then at top click "Diagnose this connection"
The troubleshooter will discover that the WiFi connection is turned off and offer a "Apply fix" option click that and windows will enable the wifi connection.
To make sure the driver for Network adapter is the right one, please go to manufacturer’s website to see if there is the one compatible with Windows 8.1.
If not, we can try to install the one applied to Windows 8 in compatible mode to see what’s going on.
Since such issue can be caused by driver bug, please also contact the manufacturer to see if they can provide more information about this issue.

  • I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, can't join existing wireless network with AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. working fine with TM

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM.  My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore.  Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.  I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads.  Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system.  I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system.  But are there other options to connect the new TC.  Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above.  after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light  or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working.  Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant.  I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work.  The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network.  Are we going backwards?
    Thanks!
    lennydas

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
    I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC.  the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.
    Thanks again!
You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

  • WiFi turning off when Ethernet connected, and not coming back on

Since about last Tuesday (possibly when I updated to Safari 7.0.6), whenever I connect my MacBook Air (2011) to ethernet, my WiFi turns off. When I disconnect the ethernet, the WiFi does not turn back on, which makes this an annoying problem. If I try to manually turn it on while Ethernet is still connected, it does the scanning animation a few times, and then turns back off. Without the ethernet, once WiFi is turned back on, it works just fine.  I'm using both the Apple USB to Ethernet adapter and a StarTech Thunderbolt hub with Gigabit ethernet, and this happens with both.  Everything is up to date, and the only change that coincided with this new behavior is Safari, but I don't remember if I updated it before of after the problem appeared, and I may not have noticed the problem for a few days as I don't often use my mac away from a wired connection.
Is this a known problem? Any known solution? When I search for it, all I find are people looking for ways to make the WiFi automatically toggle opposite the Ethernet, no one complaining that it's happening on its own.

Why are you turning cellular data off when you get home? If you have wifi at home, it will connect to the phone. Then, once you leave home and get out of range of the wifi, cellular data should connect automatically, you wouldn't need to turn it back on. Turning wifi off is really not necessary unless you are using it as a battery saving feature. I leave my wifi turned on all the time, as well as cellular data, and my battery lasts for quite a long time.

Yes this is fairly normal. When you have wifi on the phone, it drains the battery life of the device.
Here is an article that has some tips that you can follow so you can modify the settings on your device to extend it's battery life to the fullest.

  • Wifi turns off and mobile data turns by itself.

Like I said, Wifi turns off and mobile data turns on by it self. I have actually see it do this while I am using it. I am getting sick of having to back into setting to turn mobile data off and wifi back on. My phone started doing this a couple months ago and is doing it more and more frequently wasting all my mobile data. I have had the phone a little over a year. I'm not sure much can be solved in the forums but I also don't know how to contact Blackberry Support as they seem to just direct people here. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Oh wow...that's a really ancient OS. There was one more in the 10.2.1 branch after that, then the entire 10.2.2 branch, followed by 10.3.0, 10.3.1, and now 10.3.2...so you are perhaps 25, maybe 50 updates behind now? Not surprising that you are suffering from problems that have likely been cleared up since. I cannot recall specifically if the problem you are reporting was in that specific OS version...it's been way too long since I used it (I'm on 10.3.2.840 now, on all 3 of my devices). Regarding the space issue, refer:Article ID: KB36394 Unable to upgrade to BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.3.1 or later due to insufficient spaceHowever, given your ancient OS, it is rather likely that you will have trouble with updating, especially in regards to backup/restore of your data. It has been reported that some who jump too far ahead find that their data cannot be restored to the updated device OS. So, to prepare, I advise you the following:Use LINK to conduct a full backup to your PCManually copy the entire contents of Device Memory to your PCPurchase and use Ultimate Backup to backup your data to your media cardPrepare full manual documentation of all configurations, account credentials, added apps, etc. (in case, in the worst case scenario, you cannot restore from backup and have to manually reconfigure everything)Hopefully this advice is way more conservative than you require...but better safe than sorry. If the official methods don't work for you, then you can consider the unofficial AutoLoader method (which, given your ancient OS, might actually be a "cleaner" way for you to go, but will require backup/restore or manual reconfiguration as AutoLoaders are completely destructive to everything presently on the device):http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-10-OS-Device-Software/Upgrading-OS10-devices-using-Autoloader/td-p/2466747#nobannerhttp://forums.crackberry.com/bb10-leaked-beta-os-f395/bb10-os-archive-943672/You will want to research carefully what OS you choose, however...be sure you choose only an officially released (by at least one carrier) version and not a true "leak". Also beware of moving into 10.3.2...the government-required "kill switch" has been added to 10.3.2, and hence also includes a block that prevents you from falling back to 10.3.1. Good luck!

  • WiFi turns off after an inconistant amount of time until restart.

On my MacBook Pro. My wifi turns off at certain times. So to battle it when I feel its about to go I'll turn airport off and on again. I don't get it. It really happened after installing 10.5.7. Although I remember once long before that the airport turned off and went back after restart. Could have been with 10.5.3. I ran Apple Hardware test (not the through one just the normal one) and it said that my hardware was fine? Is everyone experiencing this on All 4,1 MacBook Pro 17" Models?

  • WRT54Gv2.0 wifi turns off randomly

My parents are starting to have a problem with their router this past week. Apparently when watching TV after the show is over and the TV is turned off the lights on the router dims and their wifi router is not able to be found any longer and they have to reset the router in order to find it again. I downloaded the newest firmware version 4.21.5 yesterday since they had the original firmware from years ago thinking this may solve the problem. It worked for a day and then stopped with the router having the same symptoms. They have this router located very closely to their plasma TV for the past 3 months, however, I was reading that wifi routers do not cause any interference with plasma TVs. They had this router placed near their old rear projection TV for years and never had any problems.
Could the router be going bad? Could the router be too close to the TV? What could be the problem where the signal would just stop?
    Thanks in advance

Yes, there's a possibility that the router is going bad considering the instability with the internet now that as what you've said working fine before. Upgrading the firmware is an apparent solution however though I've read somewhere that whenever you upgrade the firmware a reset should be done (set the router to default settings) to make sure the new version is installed properly. So, if you haven't reset the router I suggest you do it then reconfigure the internet again because once you reset it, you'll lost the internet through it. You may refer to the links below for the reconfiguration instructions if you have Cable or DSL internet.

After the firmware upgrade last week, the local WIFI networks pop up when I turn on my phone, I have WIFI turned off, how do I turn off the pop up?

What OS X version are you using?
Can you take a screenshot of the pop-up notification?
To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse button. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot on your Desktop.
If you can't find it on your Desktop look in your Documents or Downloads folder.
If you want to attach a screenshot to a response here, click the "camera" icon above the text field:
This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button.
⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the window the cursor is on.
⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.

  • Wifi turns off after screen lock  macbook mid 2010, mountain lion

I want my wifi to be turned on permanently, when macbook is on.
However, when I lock screen or it is locked after period of inactivity, wifi turns off.
Are  there any settings, any config files, any system tools which could be used to tell my MB 2010 not to turn my wifi off.

I think I may have found a solution. I feel like a fool for not thinking of it earlier.
System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > Computer Sleep > Never
This worked overnight, even with the screen locked.
Obviously, you could do the same for the Battery version of the panel.
    Hope this helps.

  • Wifi turns off when connected to mobile card, but wont turn back on

I have a Sprint wireless internet card.  When I connect to the mobile card, the Wifi radio turns off.  I'm fine with it turning off while I'm connected to the mobile card, but the problem is that it wont turn back on when I disconnect the mobile card.  If I try to use the button or other basic on/off switches in windows to turn it on, they wont respond.  The only way I can get it back on is to run a troubleshoot, which shows that the radio is disabled and asks if I want to apply the fix that will turn it back on.
    I'm on a Toshiba Satellite A665-S5170, Windows 7 (64), in the U.S.
    Thank you.

    Hi
So does this also happen if you dont connect the notebook to external monitor? So you can determine what is causing this problem.
If the notebook doesnt shut down without external monitor you should try to update the BIOS and display driver. Both updates you can find on the Toshiba website:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
Do you close the lid if you have connected the external monitor?
    What OS are you using?
Furthermore it would be interesting to know how you cleaned the notebook. Therefore I use compressed air spray that can blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators and you must not disassemble the notebook.
    Bye

  • WiFi Turns Off On My Mid-2011 iMac 21.5-inch Mavericks

    Hi everyone,
This has been an off and on problem that recently became pretty much more frequent. Basically, I'll be sitting and working on my mid-2011 21.5-inch iMac running Mavericks (and Mountain Lion before it) and the WiFi will stop working. I have to turn it off and back on again. It happened so infrequently, I didn't bother with it. Since Monday, it goes off and won't come back on and I've switched to my small MacBook Air, which has no problem.
I've tried resetting the network preferences, but it still isn't working and the WiFi turns off again. Pages don't load but it never says 'Offline.' I have a WiFi router from Comcast, a Netgear WN10000. Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Heath

I have been having the same issue since the beginning of this week.  Very annoying to say the least.  I've also taken the same steps, as well as rebooting the router, and the problem persists.
    I have a 2013 iMac 27" running Mavericks.

  • How to make spry menubar top level only appear for browsers with java turned off

I was under the impression that just the top level of the horizontal spry menubar appears when someone with Java turned off views it...now I see that the entire unordered list appears vertically and takes up the whole page....is there a way to make just the top level menubar items appear when java is turned off in viewers browser?
Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide.
    Lois

When you disable Javascript in your browser...and it is Javascript not Java... if your menubar is properly constructed, the submenus do not appear, only the top level menu items.
It sounds to me as if you are turning off style rendering in Dreamweaver itself, or have not properly linked your CSS stylesheet to your page.
When CSS is linked properly, the submenus are "hidden" with left: -10000px; (a BIG distance) offscreen to the left of the Viewport. They stay there unless Javascript is turned on. It is Javascript that "calls them back" onto the Viewport.
Give me a link, Lois, and I'll check into your page for you...
