Migration Assistant - Problems copying 2009 MacBook Pro data to new MacBook Pro

Purchased new MacBook Pro and tried to copy old MacBook Pro (circa 2009) data to new one using migration assistant.  It stalled after about 20 hours via wireless.  My question is how can I restore the new machine to factory settings and start over?  Or is there a better way to copy the remaining files/applications?  Please note that I've tried to run migration assistant again and it keeps exiting to login screen on the new MacBook Pro - after connection is made.

How much RAM does it have?
In spite of what Apple says, 4GB is not practically adequate with the new 64-bit systems (Lion and successors). All MBPs from Early 2011 forward, with user-installable RAM SO-DIMMs, can take up to 16GB with no problems and with greatly enhanced performance.
And if you still persist in running the systems with 4GB, make sure there's ample paging space on the HDD.

  • I used migration assistant to move all my programs to my new Macbook Pro - Now CC won't run

I used migration assistant to move all my programs to my new Macbook Pro - The programs would run but I had to enter my license key each time - I tried downloading and reinstalling CC but always get message to contact support.  Any thoughts on next step?

Adobe programs need to be installed, migration/transfer does not usually work.  Try using the Cleaner tool uninstall whatever you currently have on the machine and then reinstall.

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

  • Migration Assistant created multiple users.  After receiving my new MacBook Pro and seeing that Migration Assistant would take 40  hrs to transfer my data from my PC, I decided to do it incrementally - now my info is under 3 different users.  Ideas?

First time Mac User.  Just got my MacBook Pro 2 days ago.  Uppon setup, I founf that Migration Assistant would take more than 40 hours to transfer my data from my PC.  Thinking that I was taking a smart approach, I decided to break the transfer into smaller parts performing them when the PC was not needed.  What I've ended up doing was migrating my data into 3 diferent user's on the Mac.  So now I have an extensive iTunes library and contacts under one user, all of "my documents" under another user, and all of my pictures under a 3rd user.  Anyone know how to get all my data over to one user and then get rid of the other user names?

Erase the drive, reinstall Mountain Lion, migrate using Setup Assistant.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
To restore wait until the installation is completed and the computer restarts. You should restart to the Setup Assistant where you'll be given an opportunity to restore directly from your Time Machine backup. Be patient since the restore will take so long. If your backup drive can run on FireWire instead of USB then use FireWire instead. It will cut that time down substantially.

  • Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode

Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode
Hello, I am having problems migrating data from my old PC running XP (SP3) to my new Mac Pro 2012 using the Migration Assistant.
    - I downloaded and installed the Windows Migration Assistant from Apple
    - My Mac recognized PC and displays passcode
    - The sasscode does not show / display on my PC
    - My Mac is then stuck in "authenticating" loop and the PC is stuck "waiting for Mac to connect."
    - Both computers are connected on same network (have connected PC on WIFI and using ethernet to Reuter)
I have looked on support site and only response I saw says to reinstall Windows Migration Assistant (which I have done)
Any ideas?  If cant get this to workare there instructions for manually bring across relevant data eg itunes music and apps, photos, picasa data etc?

Why not turn off the Windows firewall and uninstall any other firewall software you have installed?
If you are using a Norton product uninstall it and discard it. To fully unistall most Norton products you have to go to the Norton website and download a soecial program to completely get rid of it. The normal uninstall feature built into the program will not remove all of it.

  • I am going to replace my 3 year old MacBook Pro with a new MacBook Pro Retina display machine.  I have been told by Apple that I can use the Migration Assistant ON MY WIRELESS NETWORK (no cables) to transfer data... I've read this can take AGES.. True?

I am planning to replace my 3+ year old MacBook Pro with a new MacBook Pro, Retina display... I have been told by "chat" on the Apple site that I can transfer my data wirelessly... on my network.. Is is a good option?  I don't want to invest in cables if I can help it... since the old machine has firewire and the new one has thunderbolt!  Will the wireless transfer take forever... as in 30-50 hours???  I've been hearing these horror stories...

  • Migration Assistant from a PBG4 10.4.11 to aluminum macbook running 10.6.2

I'm trying to run Migration Assistant to copy over from a PBG4 10.4.11 to a macbook running 10.6.2.
While running the 10.5.8 it came with, the computers got as far as the new computer figuring out the user/size of the data but would crash after about 10-15 minutes of no other activity.
Tried updating to 10.6 (that came with the MB) and did all those updates and now the computers can't find each other at all.
Doing this all over an ethernet connections.
    Any thoughts?

Getting can't copy because of permission problems with most of the stuff I'm supposed to copy over.
Most simple fix I can think of is to connect and authenticate to the PBG4 using the login credentials for the Admin account and mount the hard drive to the MacBook Desktop. If you know the IP address of the PBG4, you can do this in the Finder by using the Connect to Server command (Command-K). If we suppose that the IP address of the PBG4 is 192.168.162.5, you would enter the following into the address field of the connection dialog:
    afp://192.168.162.5
and click Connect. That will bring up the authentication dialog in which you enter the Admin account name and password. Once authenticated, a list of shared directories will appear and should include the PBG4 hard drive - mount that.
Permissions should no longer be an issue for Migration Assistant.

  • HT3231 Migration Assistant problem

How do I migrate data from a PowerBook G4 running Max OS X 10.4.11 to a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.8?
The MacBook Pro keeps telling me I have to update the Migration Assistant on the PowerBook, but I can't!

    Laura,
Please let me know, if the target disk mode worked for you - pretty much have the same problem. I did what Wjosten proposed and connected my Powerbook G4 with a firewire cable and started it in target disk mode. The connection works - I have no problem seeing my target disk on my new Macbook Pro and I can open any file on the target disk. But still, when I start the migration assistant, it  does not recognize the disk - it has been really frustrating to me. Please let me know, if you came up with a solution. I asked this question yesterday in a separate thread but got no answer...
    Thanks

  • I have a windows vista pc and want to use migration assistant to copy files over. From what I understand, it will copy over my user profile and settings as well. Is there anyway to just copy files?

Hey everyone, I just bought a new macbook pro 13-inch (late 2011 model) and I want to use migration assistant to copy over my photos, iTunes library, documents, etc. I know this can be done wirelessly or by connecting the two computers by Ethernet cable (windows vista pc --> macbook pro). Which is faster?
I also have heard that using migration assistant copies over the user file as well and makes it the new one on the mac. I would only like to copy over files, not user settings. How do I do this?
    Thanks!
P.S. I'm assuming that when my iTunes library is copied, the mp3 files are copied too. Could someone please confirm this?

  • Macbook pro data transfer to macbook air ????????, macbook pro data transfer to macbook air ????????

How (without using Migration assistant) can I (using an ethernet connection from my Macbook pro on 10.6.8 to a Macbook air on 10.7.3 with a thunderbolt ethernet adaptor) make a connection between the 2 computers and selectively transfer files and applications (complete).
I turned on sharing on both computers, went to finder menu and selected connect to server under the go menu - at first they saw each other but no connection. Now they do not even see each other.
On the pro I can find its IP address, on the air cannot find anything about an IP address. On the pro there is in network option for ethernet, on the air, nothing about ethernet.
Surely there must be a simple way?
Any ideas welcomed - probably I'm missing one or two steps in the connection process

Did you try a different cable?
Your problem is to get a reliable network connection - perhaps the thunderbolt port is the problem. The USB / ethernet adapter may work better:
    http://store.apple.com/ca/product/MC704ZM/A/apple-usb-ethernet-adapter
Perhaps there is no info about ethernet on the MBA because it does not have an ethernet port. Does it?

  • Can I use Migration Assistant to Copy files from one mac to another, but not delete the original files off of the original Mac?

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro Retina, and I have an old Macbook Pro w/o Retina and wish to use migration assistant. I still want to use the older Macbook Pro and keep all the files on it, but copy them and also put them on my new Macbook. What I'm trying to say is, can I use migration assistant to move files to a new Mac, while keeping the files on the old computer?

You can omit some broad categories, but you can't pick and choose individual items.
See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion (preferred method), or the similar Using Migration Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion for the gory details.

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.
