Migration Assistant ruined my life, now my dot mac mail is gone :(

I added a second user name on my brand new intel mac yesterday, it had only been in my house two days.
I transfered information from a firewire backup, it was an exact match for a used name for my broken power imac running tiger.
It transfered all the mail setting and programs, I though everything was fine. Then I went to my original user name and did get mail. After taking the dog out, I came back to find four or more copies of every email that was in my in box, somehow the synch had made multiple copies.
I started to delete the extras, leaving one copy of each email.
Then all **** broke lose, all the emails were gone, from my other two older macs to. It had synched all of them, and I had the trash set to delete.
Now all my macs and user names have the same damaged list on the incoming mail section.
I tried the chat at me.com and they said someone would get back to me.
Does anyone know if dot mac, me mac saves mail on a server someplace? and will they get it back for me?

HI,
If you can, from the Mac Mail Menu Bar click Mailbox/Rebuild. This can take several minutes. See if that helps.
Also, you may need to trash the Mac Mail preference file.
Go to the Mac Mail Menu Bar, click Mail/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Mac Mail.
Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.mail.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Mac Mail. If Mail behaves, move that .plist file to the Trash.
The tilde "~" character represents your home folder.

  • Migration Assistant - Error Connecting to Network of sending MAC to new Mac

Migration Assistant - Error Connecting to Network of sending MAC to new Mac
So I doing the network Migration Assistant and its keeps giving me a ERROR connecting to Network of sending MAC to new MacBook Air... help...

The local path needs to be written as the "volumes".  It's the Windows equivalent of using a Network Drive letter.  If you have not set up the volume in the Mac Finder you will run into issues.  DW was originally intended to have all files locally on your computer with a different testing server and different web server.  The fact that you have the "d$" name suggests to me that these are Windows servers that are you connecting to.  This article should help you map a drive that reconnects ( http://osxdaily.com/2012/05/04/automatically-connect-to-network-drive-mac-os-x/  ).
As far as the remote, for this DW should be allowing a network address because it is never assumed that the testing server is local on the computer.  This may end up being a bug, but let's see if we can correct one problem at a time.

  • HT4796 Migration Assistant Issue - PC won't connect to Mac!!!

I have followed all instructions on conducting a migration and have been trying to do this for well over 3 hours. I have the migration assistant open on both computers and the Mac migration assistant displays the code that needs to correspond with what is displayed on my PC. Unfortunately, on the PC, it just continues to display the "waiting for Mac to connect" message forever and nothing happens. I am trying to move files from my old PC to my new Macbook Pro.
On my PC, the minute I plug in my ethernet cable it tries to connect and then it displays "limited or no connectivity". Its as though it is trying to connect to the internet, even though the wifi is up and functioning. I've clicked the "Repair" icon in the local area connection status and that tries to renew my IP address and ultimately fails to do that. I've tried creating other networks, rebooting, making my security ridiculously low allowing sharing of all files, etc.
    HELP!!!!

Connect via Ethernet. That's much faster and more reliable than WIFI.
If you still can't find the backups, try repairing them, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

Help.I uninstalled ios8 using the directions on the web site and now all my apps, mail are gone.I backed up to iTunes first but when I try to sync to get everything back,it starts and then says it has failed. What do I do now.Thanks.Jane

The first time an iPhone is connected to iTunes that is used to sync with another iPhone or iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device or to set up the iPhone as a new iPhone.
The former does as provided - it transfers the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device to the iPhone replacing all data on the iPhone that is included with the backup being transferred. The latter does nothing allowing you to make your various selections for the iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
This is designed to be done right away with a new iPhone.
If you don't have a backup for the iPhone with iTunes on your computer and don't have an iCloud backup that hasn't been updated since choosing to transfer the backup for your iPod Touch to the iPhone, the data that was on the iPhone is gone.

  • Migration Assistant overwrote my life - can I get it back?

    Hi folks
This experience constitutes my first real Mac burn, and I'm not going to lie, it hurts.
Yesterday I used Migration Assistant to move from my Mac Pro to my new MacBook Pro.  I had already been using the MacBook Pro, and had gotten my media life up and running on it with 300+ gigs of music and about 50 gigs of photos.  My research on this forum before doing the migrate suggested that nothing would be overwritten.
Instead, everything associated with the user account I'd been slowly building anew on the MacBook Pro was overwritten with whatever was in my old Mac Pro.  All I wanted was for the files, applications, and application settings to be added to my new system, not to overwrite it completely.
Does anyone know if I can reverse this process.  I admit to foolishly not backing up the MacBook before migrating - I have always backed up my content manually, so have never used Time Machine to backup my actual system.  I have backups of everything that was overwritten, but I had intentionally removed it from the Mac Pro in order to start afresh on the MacBook.  Will I need to start afresh again, or can I somehow reclaim everything from the MacBook user account that was overwritten.
In addition, the two computers had the same name, so when I was asked to rename one I chose to rename the old system with the suffix "crap" thinking I would have no further use for it, because I assumed the MacBook I was migrating to would never be overwritten.  Instead, I'm now stuck with a crappy name. I would like to change it.
Any help with this mess would be great.
I have to say that my experience with Migration Assistant was wretched. It took me a day to get the two computers actually communicating in order to do the migrate.  The estimates of time to completion were preposterously off - it took over an hour to complete the last "less than a minute".  And the purpose and actions of the program were very poorly indicated.  I did not just jump into this, but spent hours reading up, only to wreak utter havoc on my digital life.
A sad day in my life with Mac.

Sorry to hear about the mess - I had a similar experience last year. The problem with MA is that you have already established an account, etc, etc - so you wind up with overwritten or - in my case - duplicate accounts and/or folders, messed up permissions, and the list goes on.
However, Setup Assistant, which is only offered once - right after the welcome screen when you first boot up the new Mac - will simply port over everything and should work just fine (althought they are both essentially the same procedure, the huge difference is that if you use SA, you don't have anything set up on the new Mac yet).
So, the easiest would be (as long as you still have everything on your old Mac): insert install disk on the new Mac, after selecting language, to to Utilities at top, choose Disk Utility, and erase your hard drive. Once done, let Installer start and have a firewire cable ready. After the welcome screen, follow the on screen instructions for Setup Assistant and you should be fine.

  • HT2518 migration assistant (transfer files from windows PC to Mac)

    Hello,
I found instructions on transferring my Windows file to MAC but when I search for Migration Assistant in the Launch Pad, I do not see this reference.  Can you help?

Look in the Applications / Utilities folder.

  • Can I use Migration Assistant to install Tiger on my old Mac?

I am about to buy a MacBook that will, of course, come with Tiger and I will use Migration Assistant to bring my files over from my Powermac G5 which has just Panther installed. Since I am keeping both machines, can I use Migration Assistant to migrate the Tiger OS over to my Powermac? And can I do the same with the newer versions of software that will come with the MacBook (iLife etc.)?
    Dual 2GHz Powermac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The Migration Assistant can only transfer data to a computer which already has the Migration Assistant installed, and it will not transfer the whole Mac OS X setup in any configuration. Furthermore, the version of Mac OS X which comes with a MacBook is not compatible with your Power Mac G5. If you want Tiger on your older computer, you need to purchase a new copy.

i have used window migration assistant to move emails in windows pc to mac. mails mostly moved without problem but some of them moved without content. i tried to find out if there is anything common in these emails of problem but cannot identify any hint. please help

The Dropbox folder is a subfolder of the home folder, which has the same name as the user account. It's under the Users folder at the top level of the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.)

  • HT4889 Will migration assistant restore previous settings to a new mac?

I had a hard drive crash which required replacement.  The tech shop reinstalled OS 10.6.8 for me and I want to use my Time Machine backup to restore all of my files, settings, bookmarks, etc.  I have used Migration Assistant and done a restore but nothing has changed, although I know files were transerred from the backup.  What am I doing wrong?

Migration Assistant will restore the user accounts that existed previously. Did it create a new account for the one on the old drive?
Are you trying to restore it back to 10.8?

  • Is there an easy way to migrate from Outlook 2007 on the PC to Mac Mail?

Upgraded to a new Macbook Pro. I have a laptop with Office 2007 with Outlook 2007. What is the best way to migrate to the new Macbook Pro? Also, If I set up the cloud, will it sync with Mac Mail (Do I have to have an @ icloud.com email or can I use the email I registered with ICLOUD?)
    Thanks for your help.

Create the zone, and migrate like a physical server -- but take care with your storage. You'll either have to add the devices into the zone's configuration or loopback mount them into the zone.
    Either way works.

  • Migration assistant and time machine: now I have two profiles

    Hi all!
I wasn't able to do what I was hoping to (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2791592&stqc=true) since I had the wrong torx screwdriver (by the way if anybody knows the size...), so i restored my data from time machine.
After that i was logged in in the profile I created when I first booted the mbp. I was able to see all the application restored from time machine but not the data. Under users, there were the new profile and the one I used to have before (and that was on time machine). To access "old" data I had to log in in the old profile.
    My questions are:
    - Should I eliminate (and is it safe to do so) the new profile created on the new mbp and keep only the old one imported from time machine? Will this save space/increase performance?
    - Is there any risk to loose something that was by default on the new macbook pro (programs etc)?Actually using the old profile averything seems the same as in the old mb, even desktop settings etc.
-I ran geekbench just after booting the mb and I scored around 6000 and 5800 (don't have details here now). After importing data I was between 5400 and 5600...why?
    thankyou all

    keep the blank user account.
you can use it in case you have a problem on your normal user account. by checking the problem on the blank user, you can see whether it originates from a user file or from deeper down your system.
