Migration Assistant - Selecting which applications to transfer

Hi,
I have upgraded to snow leopard and want to use migration assistant to transfer some of the files and apps of my old installation. As far as i can see, there is not much room to maneuver around which applications and files will be transfered. Is there a way to manually which applications and files will be transfered?
One more question, if I select machine under the settings subcategory, what will be transfered?
Thanking you in advance,
Thanos

you can only transfer all applications or none at all. MA does not let you pick and choose which apps to transfer. it does let you choose which data folders to transfer to some degree. you can click on the triangle next to your account name and select which default folders from your account to move.
One more question, if I select machine under the settings subcategory, what will be transfered?
machine? where do you see that?
found it. I'm not sure exactly what that is. the total size is very small so this is most likely some general computer settings like the computer name.
Thanking you in advance,
Thanos

  • HT4889 can I choose which applications to transfer with migration assistant?

I do not want to transfer all my applications from my old Mac Book Pro.  (like Toast or DVD Studio since there is no DVD burner and other apps that I don't use)
Is there a way to customize the transfer to pick just the Applications I want using Migration Assistant or something else?

It will transfer ALL applications except the older versions of the standard apps. Just delete them after the transfer.

  • System Migration Assistant select a profile

I am using the ThinkVantage System Migration Assistant 6.0 to migrate my data from my old lenovo laptop to a new lenovo laptop.  On the Current Laptop (Laptop being used) I am able to select what profile I want to transfer.  However on the Target Laptop (New Laptop) I am not able to select what profile to transfer the data to.  Is there anyway to select what profile I can transfer the data to on the new laptop?

  • Why can't I seem to use migration assistant to move applications from time capsule to iMac?

I just want to use Migration Assistant to move select applications to my new iMac.  I can't seem to find a way to select only a limited number of applications to transfer.  I want to move applications such as a Canon Utilities and Image browser applications that came with my Canon camera that I bought.  I loaded the original software on to my Macbook Pro with the discs.  I can't do that with my iMac (obviously) so I'm hoping to get my canon software onto my iMac through migration assistant.  Please help!

It is not as fine grained as that.. you select all or nothing.. At least from my experience using it.
It works if you remember that all the applications will be imported to a particular user profile.. simple create a new user.. log in with that and accept what you have to to get the applications you want.. although I would suggest most things are available for download nowadays.
You can also keep using your old MBP if it is still working and simply copy the files on the CD to the new computer via the disk in the MBP.

  • Migration assistant stalls on "applications folder"

    hi all
i'm having an odd problem upgrading a g4 dual gig desktop system to tiger using the erase and install option, after cloning my drive to an external fw hd. when i finish the install and get to step 3 (transfer your information) the migration assistant stalls on my old "applications" folder - it just sits there with the word "calculating" next to it. i tried leaving it alone for a while to no avail. with the "applications folder" checked (and calculating) the "transfer" button is greyed out. there is also an option for taking files and folders from the drive with the cloned system, and when i uncheck the "applications folder" and check the drive where this folder resides, "transfer" becomes active. i tried doing it this way, but it just copied the files to a folder on the upgraded system, without copying all my library support files, prefs and such. anyone have any idea what's going on? this has always worked flawlessly for me in many other installs. i'm stumped!
    thanks
    bruce

well, none of that resolved anything. here are a few more details: after installing 10.4 and getting to the "import from another partition/computer" section of the migration assistant the file list shows the applications folder i need to access, but instead of a size it reads "calculating." even if i let it sit for several minutes this doesn't change. i ran the usual disk utility repair permissions and verify disk procedures, and everything comes back fine. if i try to boot from the clone everything seems very slow: boot up takes quite a while, it hangs on "waiting for apple file service" for several minutes and "login window starting" also takes forever. once it gets done i get a blue screen hang. if i boot into the new install of 10.4 and run the migration assistant, it doesn't see the partition with my cloned system at all. the first time i tried migrating the files, when it wouldn't see the applications folder, it did allow me to copy the files into a folder on the new system drive. this didn't help much of course, since it didn't bring the support files over. i'm resigning myself to having to reinstall all my apps manually, a big PITA.
    <sigh>

  • Migration Assistant and Transfering Applications

    Hey,
I'm super busy this week so I'm being incredibly lazy and posting a discussion since I do not have time to search the discussion page so i'm sorry if i'm being redundant or posting an easily answered question.
I am considering upgrading from a 2 year old MacBook to a MacBookPro and plan on using the Migration Assistant to transfer files, applications, etc. My question is after going through the Migration Assistant process do you have to re-enter serial numbers for your applications such as an Adobe Creative Suite or a Final Cut suite. My situation is I have to move every six months and I cannot recall where the serial number is and it would save me loads of stress if I did not have to go find the CD/Serial.
    Thanks for any advice.

No, Migration Assistant should transfer that information so you don't have to reenter it. However, you should find those serial numbers anyway. you'll need them in case of problems with the transfer or if you have to reinstall the apps for whatever reason.

  • Migration assistance won't work to transfer music on i tunes from my old Dell laptop?

does anyone have experience to share to enable me, new to an apple mac pro, to transfer music over from my dell laptop. the migration assistant says it is unable to do this when i try.

  • Migration assistant freezes when trying to transfer from 10.6.6 to 10.6.5

New Macbook pro came with older version of Snow leopard than the one I'm running. How can i use migration assistant- it always freezes and will not allow me to copy apps and settings. Can you still transfer on initial setup.

If you want to go back to 10.6.5, reinstall from your install/restore disc, followed by running the 10.6.5 COMBO update. Don't use the Migration Assistant.

  • Migration assistant/Time Capsule-TM/ Superduper transfer

What would be easier: I am getting a new replacement iMac from Apple after I send back the iMac being replaced. Presently I use Superduper (back up software) to back up my system from my present imac to a FW 800 external hard drive. I also have a new Time Capsule that I have not set up for TM transfers yet since I'm getting the new iMac soon as was waiting for that to arrive to set up the Time Capsule: Would the Time Capsule be a superior way to transfer everything If I hooked it up to the Imac about to be replaced and backed everything up or can I transfer from the Maxtor to the new iMac after arrival. In the past I did Mac-Mac transfers but Apple requires me to send out the faulty (LCD screen) iMac before they send the new replacement. Sorry about the verbose query! It's late here in NYC. dennis

Afaik you could do either. Obviously it would be quicker to use your superduper backup not just because you already have it backed up, but also because the transfer back from your external drive will be MUCH quicker than from a timecapsule.
Your other option would be to setup the time capsule now, take your first back up then return the machine. When the new one arrives, during the initial setup you can chose to restore from a time machine backup there. I guess it comes down to when you want to do the waiting? Before you get your new machine or after =)

  • HT1554 can i use migration assistant to copy applications from one mac to another???

hey, i have an iMac G5 (ALS) and an a G4 iMac from 2002, the G5 is running OS X 10.5.8 and the G4 is running OS X 10.4.11. I want to copy apps from the G4 to the G5 without loosing them in the G4, is that possible???

What applications? Why can't you just reinstall them? Copying a file does not delete the file in the process, so the answer to your specific question is, yes it is possible.

  • How to select files to transfer with migration assistant

I am trying to transfer my iphoto library from imac to imac.  I am using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 I have used migration assistant to transfer settings, applications etc. but how can I select the files from the old computer to transfer to the new one?  The application transferred but not the library.  Further to this I would like to transfer other files but there doesn't seem to be a way to select those folders on the old computer.  Anyone have an answer?  Thanks

I don't have an external drive.  How do you select which files to transfer using Migration assistant?

  • Can I choose which applcations to transfer in Migration Assistant

I'm getting a new Mac. I like to pick and choose which applications to transfer, form the old Mac, to the new Mac.
It looks like Migration Assistant, give just an all, or nothing choice.  Is there a way to choose which apps get transfered?

No. All apps or none. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889 for the details. I recommend migrating everything on first boot, using the Setup Assistant, then, after the process is over, selectively delete/uninstall unwanted ones. See Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • Migration Assistant: migrate only selected applications

I have a new Macbook Air and an old Macbook Air. Both on Yosemite. I want to migrate only selected (few) applications from the old to the new. Can I do that with Migration Assistant?
If not, how should I do it?
I don't want to migrate everything. Thank you!

It appears Migration Assistant is all applications or none.
Set up screen sharing between the 2 computers and copy what you want that way.
