Migration assistant taking over 100 hours using ethernet?

Yesterday i got a new 2013 iMac starting 27 inch and wanted to move files from my old 2007 starting 20 inch imac. So when I used migration assistant, i decided not to port over the user from the old imac. Since it did not port over itunes music, iphoto etc., i ran it again this time porting over the user from the old imac. But now it says it will take 100 hours+ to complete. I don't wanna wait 4 days fro this to finish. Is there any way to do this faster? I have about 225 gbs to transfer and i am using an ethernet cable. I am not sure if it is gigabit or not as it has been lying around for awile. I also turned off wifi as it may interfere.

Gigabit is 10 times faster than 10/100 (the next one down), it makes a big difference. I would check.

  • Migration assistant from windows to mac using Ethernet cable

I have just bought a year old MacBook Pro and have been trying to transfer date from my windows laptop to the mac using the migration assistant.
The first time I tried this process it tried to do it via wifi and the information message stated it would take 28+ hours, but the connection was lost after a few hours and the process stopped.
I would like to restart this using an Ethernet cable from the windows laptop to the mac, but when migration assistant starts it automatically defaults to wifi and doesn't give me an option of choosing to use an Ethernet cable.
How can I force it to use this cable? Because it will take too long by using wifi.

  • Why is installing 3 applications from a creative cloud packager taking over an hour?

    Dear Adobe community,
I am trying to install 3 Creative Cloud applications, (Illustrator, photoshop, and indesign) on a Windows 7 Hpz420 workstation from a USB hard drive and it is taking over an hour to complete.  i created a package of the 3 applications using the CC packager and move the package over to a USB drive.  Then I start the installer exe it runs and completes, but the installation takes over an hour and 1/2.  My installation of Creative Suite 5.5 from a similar USB hard drive was much quicker, about 1/2 hour.
I don't want to use a remote installer like AAMEE. Is there a different way to create a package that is more efficient? I also don't want to redown the applications everytime I need to install them on a machine and utilize my network bandwidth.
Is this normal ?  I have rebuilt the package with the same results and have installed CC on two different machines with the same results.  I did not see anything in the forums about the installation being so slow so I am concern that I have missed something or that my results are not normal.
    Your help is appreciated.

My "Gaming" computer (Toshiba Qosmio X-70A, w/ 32GB RAM, i7 Intel processors @2.7 Ghz, w/ 250GB SSD, 750GB high-speed 7,200 RPM primary & 1TB SSD/HD hybrid drive) was purchase specifically, by me, to learn & use the Adobe "Cloud" Apps with.  This computer is a beast. <And - yet> it takes me days, literally <DAYs> to download all the apps I am using/studying.
I (last week) recently had my 1st "total meltdown" w/ Win 8.1-Pro (what a total P.O.S. "OS" this is!) & have faced the daunting task of re-installing ALL of the Adobe SW available over the "Creative Cloud". This will take days (w/ a direct DSL link to a Cat-6 cable; not on Wi-Fi) to "re-install" all the "Creative Cloud" software I was learning/working with. Insane. I have never seen anything like this!
So, "DLi" - I agree! Adobe's SW (& HW) Engineers don't give a stuff about your time nor mine.
The only things that are of importance to them are (#1 - "Keeping their jobs") ... metering out their "Creative Cloud" in a manner which allows them to investigate EVERY byte on your computer/server/device BEFORE allowing you to use it . . . (hmmm....I do wonder how many dollars per month that information is worth to the NSA / per seat)?) ... and making it "a nightmare" for the user.
    What an insult!
What an horrific slap in the face to each & every one of Adobe's "Creative Cloud" paying customers! (Uhhhm, that'd be you and that'd be me, too).

  • HT4889 Having issues using Migration Assistant taking 200+ hours for 60 gigs.

I am transferring from my source which is running Lion to my target which is running Mountain Lion.  It is taking 200+ hours with the ethernet connection.  Is firewire faster? Help!

    Thanks for the reply,
I didn't understand exactly what to put into AppleScript sorry (never used it before) - so I just ran the following from the Terminal:
    $ echo $UID
    $ sudo chown -R 503 ~
And restarted - everything works now - thanks heaps.
What had happened and is this something I did or did Migration Assistant just get confused?
I have 3 new Mc Pros to setup on Monday so just want to ensure those are hassle free.
    Cheers

  • Migration assistant taking forever, says it has 127 hours till completion???

Setup my mac before I wanted to transfer from my old computer. Today I connected my PC to my Mac via wifi using migration assistant. The only issue I am having is it's taken about 6 hours already with only about 1cm of loading. I am transferring about 450GB. I just checked it and it says it will be completed in approximately 127 hours!!! Any help would be great, I'm not sure what to do. I do not want to wait 5 days, that seems a bit stupid. Thanks

    Sure.
Your router should have (at the least) three Ethernet ports and you can use a cable to directly connect to your router, rather than using WiFi. Your PC most certainly has an Ethernet port where you can plug the cable from the router.
Depending on which MacBook Pro you have, it will either have an Ethernet port (non-Retina) or you can purchase a Thunderbolt>Ethernet adapter from Apple. Then you'd use a cable to plug into the router so that both machines would communicate much faster than over WiFi.
Call back if I haven't explained too well,

  • Why is Migration Assistant taking soooo long?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro 13". I decided to transfer most of my stuff from my old iBook G4. I tried to use a firewire cable but MA said "Mac OSX is not installed on your old Mac." Huhhh? That machine has never seen anything but OSX...
So I use an ethernet cable directly between the two computers. That works. Except that it is taking INSANELY long. I am only transferring about 30 gigs and it has been going for 6 hours and says it will need 8 more! What can possibly take so long??? When I transfer files over my network using the same cables, 30 gigs takes maximum 30 minutes I think....
    Thanks,
    Bo

Okay a few things here - first if you're using mavericks on both machines you don't need to do anything with target disk mode. Just using migration assistant on both machines connected by thunderbolt is enough.
Second, I have a 2011 MacBook Air and it does have a single thunderbolt port. Pre-2011 may have been the mini display port.
Finally, and the reason I stumbled onto this, the thunderbolt connection works wonderfully fast but there's some kind of bug in migration assistant that defaults to the wifi connection if both machines are connected to the network, even if you have a thunderbolt cable connected. I'm transferring a 2011 MacBook Air to a new rMBP and just discovered this issue. I connected with the thunderbolt cable, it estimated around an hour for about 80gb of data then inched closer to 36 mins as the estimate.
At some point along the way though migration assistant decided wifi would be better and the estimate jumped to over 20 hours. I unplugged my router (only solution for me once both machines had migration assistant running) and it seamlessly defaulted back to thunderbolt where the estimate cut back down to 30ish minutes.
The thunderbolt cable being worth the extra money or not is I suppose a matter of opinion but for me it's got plenty of other uses to justify the price and certainly made this transfer a lot faster. I just wish migration assistant wouldn't default to wifi without any kind of indicator.
So I assume too late to help you out but hopefully someone will see this and fix this bug and maybe it'll be helpful to someone else as it's still an issue as of right now.

  • Migration Assistant taking forever

I am using the migration assistant to transfer data from my 24" iMac 2.8ghz, to my new 27" 2.8ghz i7 and it is taking forever. So far it has been 24 hours. And everytime I look at the screen there is a different time amount left.
If I wanted to, how would I stop the migration assistant?

    HI Diane,
Force Quit the Migration Assistant app.
Here are ways to force an application to quit:
Choose Apple menu > Force Quit, select the application in the list, and click Force Quit.
Hold down the Command and Option keys and press Esc. Then select the application in the list and click Force Quit.
Hold down the Option key and press the application’s icon in the Dock.

  • After Migration Assistant, Time Machine refuses to use old backups

I've got to say I'm pretty disappointed with Time Machine.
I just dropped $2,000 on my second-ever Mac, a 15" MBP (Core i7 2GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB 5200rpm hard drive, the stock low-end 15" config).  From what I'd heard about Migration Assistant, I believed it would easily move my stuff over to my new Mac.  For the most part it did, but a few things didn't transfer.  Other posts on the topic detail them accurately - Desktop icon layouts, some settings, Growl, etc.
I told Migration Assistant to use my Time Machine backups, which have been happening without incident for a long time.  My oldest backup is December 2010.
Now that my new MBP is about 99% set up like my old MBP, I am having a problem with Time Machine.
I get the error "Time Machine could not complete the backup.  This backup is too large for the backup disk.  The backup requires 355.61 GB but only 176.44 GB are available."
Looking at the Time Machine drive in Finder, I found that Time Machine is trying to create a new folder for backups and do a full backup.  Where there was once one folder, "[My Name]'s MacBook Pro," there is now an additional folder, "[My Name]'s MacBook Pro 2."  Time Machine is trying to back up into that second directory.
Now, I get it that this is a different computer.  But really, if I use Migration Assistant to restore my Time Machine backup, I think it would be safe for OSX to assume that I want to continue using those backups.  What is especially disappointing for me is, there were things that Migration Assistant did not restore properly.  I probably haven't found them all.  That makes it CRUCIAL that I have my Time Machine backups, but it seems that Apple thinks it's perfectly normal for me to want to FORMAT my Time Machine drive after Migration Assistant did a half-*** job of migrating my data.  I need those backups now more than ever.
I do also have an online backup, but I still don't feel very comfortable destroying six months of local backups just to make Time Machine work again.  Both MBPs were running the same (latest) version of Snow Leopard, so it stands to reason all that needs to happen is a very small incremental backup.
I have been Googling for hours.  All I've found is a procedure for 10.5 that doesn't work in 10.6 where I get down into the Terminal and change a MAC address in a file on the Time Machine volume.  But that's it.  In fact it seems like there's no answer.
Come on Apple, you do everything else better than the competition.  Why do I have to nuke six months of backups or buy a new 2TB external drive to make Time Machine work again?  I assure you I want to continue making incremental backups against my old Time Machine backups, and promise to hold you not responsible should I screw something up by grabbing an old system file or something from February.
Would appreciate any help anyone could offer.

Did you use Setup Assistant when your new Mac first started up, or skip that, create a user account, then use the Migration Assistant app in your Applications/Utilties folder?
If you used Setup Assistant, when you started your first backup you should have gotten the message in #B5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  It sounds like you didn't (or chose Start New Backup).  And no, the Leopard procedure doesn't work on Snow Leopard.  That's what #B5 is for.
Usually, if you use Setup Assistant, Time Machine will still say it's going to do a full backup, and make room for it, but actually do an incremental backup (very, very slowly).
Either way, it usually deletes a lot of old backups.    We're hoping that will be fixed in Lion.
Once it's decide to make a new backup, there's no known way to prevent it.

  • Migration assistant taking forever at "less than a minute"

Using Migration Assistant to set up new Macbook Pro running 10.8 from external drive (via USB) using 10.8 Time Maching back up from my iMac. I did the exact same thing in January from old Macbook Pro to new iMac without any trouble. This time around the migration assistant has been in "Less than a minutate remaining" mode for about 3 hours. It has gone from "tranferring files and folders" to "transferring system settings" but both has remained in "Less than a minute remaining." Should I be persistant and stick it out? If so, for how long? Some support threads say stick it out while Apple support says "this is not normal" and the back up could be corrupt and may need to be migrated in safe mode. Any thoughts or ideas shared here appreciated. Thanks!

I had this problem migrating from my iMac; a late 2009 24in FW800 with Mavericks, to a late 2013 27inch Thunderbolt.  Migration Assistant hung at "lass than a minute" for over an hour and change...   My back up drives had two F800 interfaces and a USB.  I was abe to plug an additional drive into one of the remaining available ports on the back of my Time Capsule drive.  This woke up the Time Capsule drive and finished the migration installation process.
I beleive the setting "put Hard Drives to sleep when possible" must have been on by default on the unused OS without my awareness.  The action of plugging in an additional drive to the remaining port on my Time Capusle back up drive woke the Time Capsule drive up and then in completed almost imediately.  Hope this helps and that any future readers have a BAck Up drive with more than one port and an extra device or drive they can plug into in (Daisy Chain Style) to get the Capusle drive to complete.   Good luck!

  • Why is wireless Migration Assistant taking so long?

I just bought a MacBook Air and I am trying to transfer the data from my old MacBook (Late 2008) wirelessly by Migration Assistant. Both devices are the latest version but it is taking me ages and it doesn't show how long left there is. I'm tring to transfer about 100GB so I thought this could be too much (including my hole music library, some films from iTunes, documents, etc.). Please help me find out what I should do.
Thank you very much! Have a nice day!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
100 GB is an insane amount of files to transfer through Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is the slowest way to transfer files, and the one that cause more troubles.
Instead, I recommend to make a backup of your old MacBook onto an external drive with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 After that, you just have to connect the external drive to your new MacBook Air and follow the same steps you have followed to transfer your files, being this a much quicker way

  • TS1963 Migration Assistant hangs at 29 hours

Bought a new iMac yesterday. When i fired it it up the new Mac offered Migration Assistant. And so I did follow the prompts and got the migration started. I was using the wifi connection to do this. This morning I found that after 18 hours the time is still at 29 hours and and the progress bar has not moved. When I looked at it last night the time was 29 hours so no difference. I am considering shutting down both Macs.

Quit using the Wi-Fi, it's by far the slowest and least reliable method. Use a Firewire connection, if your old Mac uses FW400 then you will need a cable like:
    http://www.amazon.com/Oyen-Digital-Firewire-1394B-Cable/dp/B0027DPM1U/ref=sr_1_1 ?ie=UTF8&qid=1336569765&sr=8-1
which is available at any Radio Shack, computer store or of course Amazon.
