Migration assistant troubles

I am attempting to migrate data from my old iMac G5 to my new MacBook. After booting the iMac into target disk mode, Migration assistant eventually times out showing some message about the target disk not supported or whatever. I forget what it said. Anyhow, I attempted to use the installation disk to perform a repair on the iMac g5 and that seemed to be ok. It found a few troublesome areas but appears to have fixed them. But... still cannot get migration assistant to see the disk in my iMac. I tried to use the Tech Tool Deluxe CD to repair the disk but the iMac just spins the fans to max and freezes.
Any other suggestions?

First do the following on your iMac:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger and Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Next:
Shut down both computers. Connect a Firewire cable between each computer. You need a 6-pin FW400 cable in good condition. First start up the iMac and after the chime press and hold down the "T" key until the Target Disk Mode screen appears. Then start up the MacBook normally. After the MB starts up you should see the hard drive of the iMac on the MB's Desktop.
I would, however, recommend against using Migration Assistant to move data from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac. Instead simply follow these instructions:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (* This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ copy any preferences needed for third-party applications
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
If you want cookies:
/Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
/Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
For FireFox:
/Home/Library/Applications Support/FireFox
/Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist
Credit goes to another forum user for this information.
I suggest you reinstall your third-party software that aren't universal binaries or replace them with updated versions that are universal binaries. Do not copy preference panes, contextual menu items, internet plug-ins, input managers, startup items, or hardware drivers (extensions) from your iMac. They are incompatible with Intel Macs.

  • Migration Assistant Trouble

Hello all, I have a very sticky problem. I recently upgraded the hard drive in my Macbook Pro, before I did this I used 'Carbon Copy Cloner' to make a copy of my drive, I didn't make a disk image, I just copied the entire drive over to my external drive, then I installed my new hard drive, installation went fine, when I booted up again I had to install Leopard again, obviously because it was a new drive, when I tried to use Disk Utility in the install the drive would hang so I said forget it and just installed the rest of the way. Once I was on the desktop, I opened Disk Utility and checked my external for errors, apparently, there were a few, I fixed them all, then opened up 'Migration Assistant' (this is of course after the drive was indexed) I selected to transfer an account, clicked mine from the external, and waited, and waited, and am still waiting three hours later, my account shows up, everything is there (minus the applications folder, the MOST important part) and it just says 'Calculating' no pinwheel, its not 'not responding' and the external drive is working, I can hear it so SOMETHING is going on... I don't know what to do! should I wipe the external, swap to my old drive and try again? this time with a disk image? sorry for writing so much I just never know what step you guys WON'T need to know. Thanks in advance for any help...

that sounds very strange. do you have any files/applications open that reside on the internal? if not possibly you have a failing internal drive. try formatting it while booted from the leopard install DVD. insert the DVD, reboot and hold "c" at the chime. this will boot you into the leopard installer. once past the language screen start disk utility from the utilities menu and try formatting the internal drive from there. if you succeed, reboot from the external and try cloning again.

  • HT3231 Migration assistant troubles: some documents could not be transferred

I recently erased my hard drives and reinstalled Mac OS X on my MacBook. I attempted to use Setup Assistant to restore my old user ID with its files, but received the error message:
    Errors and Warnings:
    - 2013-02-23 22:17:10 -0800 Some documents for [username] could not be transferred
    - 2013-02-23 22:17:10 -0800 [username] could not be created
I then continued on through the setup process and created a new user account instead, assuming I could fix the problem later. I then installed the latest combo update via Software Update and attempted to use Migration Assistant to restore my backed up files, but received the same error message.
I need some advice on how else to fix this problem, thank you.

Hmm, let try a new Admin user...
To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does it work in the new account?
    If you can't do that...
Reset OS X Password Without an OS X CD...

    Admin Hack...
    http://www.hackmac.org/?q=node/4
Starts up like the first time you buy a new Mac, but after filling in all that info again, you should have access to the computer and the other Users & files will still be there... give the new User a different name than an existing one.

  • Migration Assistant Trouble - Time Machine

    Hi guys,
I created a backup of my old MacBook's hard drive through Time Machine, to transfer to my new MacBook Pro.
I went through the normal steps on Time Machine, selected from a Time Machine backup and it's been looking for the disk ever since.
It showed the last time I plugged it in yesterday evening, found the backup straight away. However I added some movie files onto the external hard drive to back up from my new MacBook to make sure I didn't lose them during the migration and since then it hasn't been able the backup.
Has this messed up the backup?
    Any help very much appreciated!

Do you mean you copied some extra files onto the TM drive?  If so, where did you put them?
Unless you managed to get them inside the Backups.backupdb folder (which the Finder should't allow), it shouldn't be a problem (but those files won't be found by Migration Assistant.)
Try repairing the backups, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.

    hi all

    any idea? please

Hi Christina, belated welcome to Apple Discussions if nobody said it already.
I've had some experiences with these new flash memory recording camcorders, and I'll give you a quick rundown of what I've learned. Many of them (JVC, Panasonic, etc.) tend to record in a .MOD file format, which is non-standard, proprietary, and unrecognizable by most software. I thought Canon was usually a little more standards-compliant, but it appears they also use this .MOD format in your specific camera model. There are likely a couple ways we can get around this though!
In order to play the files, you will likely need to change their file format (.MOD) to .AVI manually. You'll have to locate the files on your Mac, and then manually change the file names so that the file extension (after the period) is .AVI
At that point, a video player application such as http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html>VLC should play the files fine!
You should be able to transfer new video files from the camera to the Macbook Pro with no problems as well. Just plug in the camera to the computer via USB, and also make sure the camera is plugged in to charge. Once it's plugged in, open iMovie (came with the MBP, in the Applications folder) and the MBP should take care of the rest.
Let me know if you have any success with any of this!

  • Troubles with Migration Assistant SnowLeopard - SnowLeopard

I had to make a clean install of osx 10.6.8 on itself. before that I madea  backup on external HD with TimeMachine. Now, the Migration Assistant reads the content of backup disk but it does not start transfer. Any suggestion? tks

Tks for the answer but the trouble persists. After checking , calculating, and displaying  the amount of GB to be transferred, Assistant is stuck right on the screen in Your reply. You can press the button Continue but nothing happens. I have waited for a long time (more than 1 hour) but still nothing else happens.
It's possible the backups are damaged.  Try to repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Why did you do this in the first place?  Could there be other problems, such as hardware, that were causing trouble?  If so, that may be the difficulty here.   You might want to run this:  Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test.  Run the Extended tests(that may take an hour or so, depending on how much RAM you have).  Write down any error code(s) it shows.

  • HT3231 trouble migrating certificates. Migration assistant did not migrate them

    There are two Problems.
    1. Migration assistant while migrating somehow did not migrate certificates. Im not sure if all are not migrated or this specific digital certificate for my identity issues by a legitimate CA
    2. When I try to manually export and later import, these Certificates and keys, they still don't work.
    Here is what I'm doing
    - I just replaced an SSD in place of HHD (was called MacintoshHD) where OSX (mountain Lion) was installed. I ofcourse created a recovery disk / USB and later on re-installed OSX on the new SSD through Recovery
    - next I used migration assistant to migrate my old user and files etc.
    - all seemed well, until, I landed on a local website, where the login is through my digital certificate. This certificate was missing. Seems migration assitant did not do its job well.

    Quit mail.
    Goto ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
    Delete the follow
Launch mail, it will re-import those files.

  • Trouble with migration assistant going from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro running 10.5.8 and just got a new macbook running 10.6.1. I'm trying to run the migration assistant. It gets to the point where it says 'preparing information' on each computer and then it seems to just hang. I've let it go for 45 minutes and nothing happens past that.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Susan

I'm not sure what you are doing so try this:
On the old computer do the following:
Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
With both computers turned off connect a Firewire cable between them. Boot the old computer into Target Disk Mode. After the TDM screen appears boot the new computer normally. After the new computer has started you should find a drive icon for your old computer on the new computer's Desktop.
Open Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder. Select the migration option (should be already selected) to migrate from another computer or hard drive. Then follow the onscreen instructions. For additional help select Migration Assistant Help from the Help menu.

  • Trouble with Migration Assistant

I just bought a new Macbook Pro. I have 2.5 year old Macbook pro, running OS 10.4.11. I'm trying to use migration assistant to move everything, but no luck so far. I first tried through the wireless network (knowing it would be slow), but I couldn't get my new computer to see the old one - it would get as far as giving me the passcode to put in the old computer, I'd put that in, and then it would just say preparing or something like that. I waited about 30 min with no luck. So then I went to 3 stores, and eventually found on that sold firewire 800 cables. I tried migration assistant with the firewire option - I get as far as rebooting the old computer and getting the firewire symbol and that's it. The new Macbook pro just keeps saying waiting for computer to reboot. I did upgrade my software on the old Macbook. Not really sure what else to do at this point. Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Trouble with Migration Assistant! Please help!

My G-4 (OS 9.2.1) flat screen went dark. I want to transfer important files from the G-4 Tower to my new I-Mac OS X (10.4.9). I launch Migration Assistant from the I-Mac. I've got the firewire connected from the G-4 to the I-Mac. I restart the G-4 and hold the T-key on the keyboard down during startup. The Migration Assistant software on the I-Mac indicates it's waiting for the "disks" to appear --- and they don't appear. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

There's no need to use the migration assistant to move OS 9 stuff. Just boot the iMac, hook up the G4 to the iMac, boot the G4 in TDM mode, and when its HD pops up on the iMac's screen, double-click on it, and drag & drop everything from it to the iMac. IIRC, the migration assistant only deals with OS X.
