Migration Assistant Update

I am trying to install Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Lepard dated Aug 2011 on my MacBook Pro Ver. 10.6.8 in order to copy my files and folders over to my new MacBook Pro Lion. I downloaded the Migration assistant upgrade however when I try to install it I receive an installation error message: "Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Leopard can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for the update" Why is this occuring?

As a point of clarification, I believe this statement is incorrect. Migration Assistant (and Setup Assistant) are in fact designed to migrate from an older system to a newer one, and I would guess this is the most common use.
That's correct.
Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant will transfer from an older "major version" of OSX to the same or a newer one, such as Snow Leopard to Lion or Lion to Lion.
It will also transfer from any "minor" version to any other "minor" version within the same major version, such as 10.6.0 to 10.6.8, or 10.6.8 to 10.6.0 (although it's not recommended to go backwards, as in some cases file systems have been changed and some apps won't work properly).

  • Migration assistant update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Hello -- I downloaded SNOW LEOPARD successfully that past week. I did a software update as well afterwards.
Now in preparation for upgrading to LION OS X, I read an article that mentions one must make sure to have the MIGRATION ASSISTANT UPDATE for Mac OS X Snow Leopard installed. I am unsure if this was included in the software updates I performed. One would assume it would be there. BUT there is not a detailed listing of what these combination updates include. HOW can I tell if I have the desired version required to continue on to LION?
Another suggestion was for one to perform FIRST AID on the start up disk. It only says to select your Mac HD and then to "verify" ..... do they mean to VERIFY DISK or VERIFY DISK PERMISSIONS. I have on occasion performed a REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS but not the others mentioned. I do not know what the difference is?
    THANK YOU

I have the same console mesages repeating ad-nasium as you do. What is interesting is I do have the StartuoItems directory but it is empty. The problem I have is that the log-in window comes up as normal, but I can not type in it for about 5-8 seconds. This has started after the latest updates which you mention. Don't know if this issue is related or not. Have deleted the loginwindows and loginitems preferences to no effect.

  • Migration Assistant update not following through

I am trying to migrate the contents of my 10.4.11 Tiger to a new MacBook. It says I need to update the Migration Assistant on my Tiger. I have downloaded and installed this, http://support.apple.com/kb/DL713. IT seems to work smoothly, but the Migration Assistant on my Tiger is still 1.06, and I cannot get my two computers to connect to each other through the Assistant. What am I doing wrong?

Correct, the method that requires using MA on both Computers will not work with Tiger/10.4.x
If both of these have Firewire it can be done running only MA on the new Mac & the older one in Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Then in MA choode from another Disk or such wording.

  • Migration Assistant Update Problem

I have have an old G4 PowerBook running OS X 10.4.11 and want to migrate all the data to a new iMac running OS X 10.7.2.  On the new machine it says to upgrade the migration assitant on the old machine.  I have looked all over and anything I have found won't install b/c it says the machine does not qualify for the update.  I also tried connecting the old machine to the new with a firewire but it does not appear on the new screen.  I hate the idea of having to drag everything back to the store, any ideas how I can pull all the data off the old machine to the new, or how to upgrade the migration assistant on the old machine so the new machine recoginizes it?
    Thanks

Did you use FireWire Target Disk Mode to start the PowerBook? Start the PowerBook while holdig teh t key, and keep holding until you seea display that looks something like this:
At that point, the hard drive of the PowerBook should be visible to the new Mac as an external hard drive. MA should work but, if it does not, you can still manually move items.
NOTE: by default, the Finder preferences may not allow external drive to show up on your new iMac. Go to Finder > Preferences and check the box for showing external hard drives:
When I upgraded to a 27-inch iMac (10.6.8) from a G4 MDD desktop Mac (10.4.11), I manually dragged the entire Documents folder from the G4 hard drive to the iMac. If you have already used the new Mac enough to have important files already in the new Documents folder. you may wish to do the dragging on a folder-by-folder basis, then file-by file. Takes longer but is very safe.
Note that OS 10.7 will not run older programs written for the PPC processors. If you have such programs, you need to upgrade them to versions with native Intel code. Example: Office 2004 will not run under Lion but Office 2008, that had both PPC and Intel code, will.
Due to the age and OS disparity between a PPC Mac running 10.4 and an Intel Mac running 10.7, you are better off to update programs than to use MA to migrate them.

  • Where can I upgrade Migration Assistant?

Hello, I have just bought a Macbook second hand, and realised it was 10.4.11 not leopard as the seller claimed. I do also have a macbook pro (old model, about four years old) with snow leopard installed and this mac is basiclly a back up as I think the mother board has had it on the mac book pro, but thats just another issue.
Unfortunatelly I cannot upgrade the macbook via cd as the cd drive is non responsive to any cd i have put in it, it will take a disk then spit it out about a minuit later.
The macbook pro's firewire also does not work which leaves me with the option of wirelessly migrating what I have on my macbook pro to my macbook to ensure I have a back up to continue working if my macbook pro dies.
The macbook has migration assistant v1 where my macbook pro has v.3 I read on a forum that you should ensure you have the latest version of migration but am not too sure where to find it and whether it is a downloadable upgrade as a CD will not work for me. Failing that can i use an USB to Migrate or does it have to be firewire?

Migration Assistant is on the System Install DVD 1 that originally comes w/all Macs. There are no Migration Assistant updates per say. If there were, they would be included in Software Update.
If you did not get the System DVDs that originally came w/your comp from the seller, contact the seller for them.
If you want to install Leopard, you will need to purchase the retail DVD. Same can be purchased directly from Apple by phone 1-800-692-7753.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -

  • Can't get user account from 10.7.5 to Mavericks with Migration Assistant

I am perplexed about this one.  I want to use migration assistant to get a user account from an old Mac Pro running 10.7.5 to a 2012 iMac that has Mavericks on it.
    I've tried:
1 - Migration assistant over the network - migration assistant says the Mac Pro needs a higher operating system, but the computer can't be upgraded.
2 - Target mode of Mac Pro to iMac: Migration assistant sees the volume, but doesn't acknowledge any user accounts.  It only acknowledges applications, and other files.
Any ideas folks.  I simply want to bring the user accout over to the new computer and perhaps the applications.

LOL - I figured it out.  I had to update the Mac Pro which included a new migration assistant update.

  • Migration Assistant 10.5 to target running 10.6

    Hi everyone,
I've been scouring the internet for information as to what exactly the problem is to an issue. I've tried downloading updated to MA, but nothing yet.
I've got 1 Mac with (likely) a broken screen power inverter running 106. So it is mostly dim all of the time. I have another Mac with a smaller drive running 10.5, with less RAM. Each Mac is only really used by one different user each. My plan has been to migrate the user on smaller HD to the larger, and switch out the necessary RAM and drive.
My problem is that when using Migration Assistant, I follow all of the instructions, and both computers get stuck on "Looking for Other Computers". They are definite;y connected on a network, as I am currently using screen sharing to access the assistant on the Mac with the dim screen.
    I've tried:
Downloading the Migration Assistant update for Leopard (for using it with Lion)
Disabling Firewall (or allowing all incoming connections)
    Sharing the Internet via Ethernet
Nothing yet has worked. Is there something categorically wrong with migrating a user from a Leopard Mac to Snow Leopard? I can't see anything wrong as far as only migrating a user.
    Any suggestions, or workarounds?

    Hello,
Is the newer one set "From Another Mac", & the older one "To another Mac"?
Is it Wifi or Ethernet? Wifi will need the Passcode entered...
For possible clarity, MA can't migrate "from" an older OSX "to" a newer OSX, only the other way. 10.6 using FROM, 10.5 using TO.

  • Migration Assistant won't recognize computers-Snow Leopard to Lion

    Hello everyone-
I just bought a new Quad Core MacBook Pro that came with Lion installed. I am trying to use Migration Assistant to transfer data from my older Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro that has Snow Leopard installed. When I run Migration Assistant with the computers connected, it doesn't recognize either computer... It just sits there indefinitely acting as if it is searching but never sees either of the machines. I have tried with both computers connected via Firewire (using several different cables just to be sure the cables were good) and also with an Ethernet cable. I experience the same problem, regardless. Also, I have downloaded the Migration Assistant update for Snow Leopard, and it hasn't helped. Am I missing something obvious? Thanks in advance-

make sure that both computers are up to date
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1420
and for your lion, it should be at least 10.7.1

  • I just purchased a macbook pro and am trying to get itunes library and other documents from macbook 2.1 running 10.4.11 and migration assistant tells me to update but it tells me i am up to date...confusing...how do i fix this issue?

The camera must be plugged in to AC power (not batteries only). And generally, the camera should be set to Play mode, not recording mode.

  • HT4889 Migration Assistant to update my new Mountain Lion iMac from an external USB hard disk drive, it is constantly saying that it is "looking for other computers". It doesn't find the external drive. Why is it looking for other computers?

I'm trying to use Migration Assistant to update my new Mountain Lion iMac from an external USB hard disk drive. I told it to look for a drive, yet it is constantly saying that it is "looking for other computers". It doesn't find the external drive ... it just endlessly looks for other computers. Why is it looking for other computers at all, when I told it not to?

Wow, the wording in Migration Assistant is misleading. I've never used it before, so I thought I would try to copy my files from the external drive ... my old iMac died, but I managed to get everything I need off it, using the 'cp' command in single-user mode. So I guess I'll just have to manually copy the files from the external drive to the new machine. I was hoping that Migration Assistant might help somehow, but obviously not.
    Thanks for the quick reply!

  • Can't update migration assistant to transfer data to new mac

Just bought a new MacBook Pro and want to use Migration Assistant to transfer data from my Macbook OS X 10.4.11       The new MacBook Pro says i need to update Migration Assistant on the source computer, but when i run software update on the source computer it says there is nothing that needs updating.  Any ideas on how to get this done?

Right, there is no update for 10.4.11, only 110.5.8 & up.
If the old MacBook has Firewire you can put it in FireWire target disk mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
So you only need MA on the newer one.
If no FW on the old one you'll need to clobe the old one to an externak drive tahat can be moved to the new one.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

  • Update Migration Assistant and DVD/CD Sharing

    Hi everyone,
I'm just updating the Migration Assistant by Auto-Update and the Installation takes pretty long. It's been installing for over an hour now, and it's stuck at configuring installation. Time Machine does not do any backups either right now.
Is the update supposed to take this long or is something wrong. Thanks for helping me.

No. Sound like the update has failed. You can force quit and try again. But before you reinstall, I suggest doing the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Where can i find the migration assistant upgrade download for a mac OS 10.4.1   I am trying to copy files from Mac 0sx 10.4.1.1 to a new mac

The update is available here, but you should manually move files via File Sharing or Target Disk mode instead of using it in that configuration.

  • Updating pages, iTunes after using migration assistant.

I recently used migration assistant as a data transfer, now I no longer have access to the 'stacks' documents, and when I open pages etc. it says I need to update it, even though I had installed them as a new app when I bought my computer... can anyone explain this to me.

Software updates are made available from time to time, and one may have been released for Pages since you bought your computer.
