Migration Assistant via Thunderbolt

I am migrating from a 2008 MacBook to a 2012 MacBook Pro (Retina). The quickest way to migrate I believe is by Thunderbolt or ethernet. My MacBook doesn't have Thunderbolt and the MacBook Pro doesn't have ethernet. Can the Mini Display port on my MacBook be used as a Thunderbolt port? I know there is an ethernet adapter for the MacBook Pro, but I didn't want to but it for this one use.

  • Migration Assistant with Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter?

    Hey gang-
Finally retiring my mid-2007 iMac with a new Late-2013 iMac.   Yayyyy!
I've always been happy with Migration Assistant, but wanted to ask the experts if Migration Assistant will work with the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter.   I'm planning on connecting the old iMac Firewire 800 port to the new iMac Thunderbolt port via the adapter.  On a related note, I assume that same as always, I will need to boot the old iMac into Target Disk mode, right?
    Thanks!
    Dave

Of course. You can connect both iMacs with a FireWire 800 cable and a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter without any problem. The problem would come if the old iMac has not got FireWire 800 ports, but the Mid 2007 iMac comes with one.
In order to use Migration Assistant and transfer files from another iMac through FireWire, you need to put your old iMac in Target Disk mode as you said. To do this, simply hold the T key while your old iMac is starting up until you see the FireWire icon in the display. Then you can set up your new iMac, and you will be asked to transfer your data.
If you have already set up your new iMac, use Migration Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities) > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html

  • Any way way to use Migrations Assist via USB?

Trying to suck stuff from drive from a dead PowerBook (drive's fine) to new MacBook, and of course
only option is Target Disc Mode by FireWire.
And only way I have of connecting the old drive is by USB. Bet not.
Guess I'll just create a partition from unused space on the HD, clone the old HD over and Migrate from there.
    Never mind...

    That's the ticket.

  • Stalled migration assistant then power outage

I was using Migration Assistant via Firewire/Thunderbolt to transfer from a 2009 27" iMac (10.8.6) to a new 27"iMac (10.8.4). After two days of churning, there stopped being any progress with about 40% of info having been moved. I left it to work for 24 hours just to be sure nothing was happening, then the power went out. I have 800+GB to transfer. I had backed up everything with Time Machine but that external hard drive died during the first attempt at migration. I have all my files backed up to another external hard drive, but need to know my next step. The Apple support call-in guys tell me I can damage both my computers. Help!!

  • Safari and iTunes will not open on my Macbook Air after Migration Assistant

I did the Migration Assistant via wireless (from Macbook Pro TO Macbook Air) last night and it did work. However, my Safari and iTunes will not open on my Macbook Air now. The error messages are as follows:
Safari: "Safari quit unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple."
      - I tried reopening the app, restarting, and shutting down the computer. Nothing has worked.
iTunes: "The file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?"
      - I clicked "Download iTunes" but then another message comes up that all my software is up to date.
    Any help is very appreciated.

Try repairing permissions using Disk Utility.

  • Migration Assistant Problem

Bought a new iMac 24" 2.66 GHz. Tried to run Migration Assistant via Firewire from old iMac (Power PC G4 OSX 10.4.11). Tried it in the initial set up but didn't work. Then tried it after initial set up of new Mac and was prompted that I needed to change the name of the account in order to migrate since the main account on my old and new computers was the same. Didn't seem like I had another option. Transferred data but it is stored in a separate account from the main one I used to set up the new computer, and I have to log out of the main account to the other account to see it. Is there any way to make these 2 separate accounts to talk to each other? Should I just forget the initial account and use the new account even though the computer is set up through the initial account? Should I just find a way to start over and restore factory settings?
Friends say Migration Assistant works seemlessly but this has been anything but.

yes. just delete that account and use the migrated one.

  • Migration assistant frozen

Got my new iMac yesterday and hooked up to start migration assistant (via wifi) from my Mountain Lion MacBook Pro.  Last night it was saying it would take 18 hours, but this morning 19 hours.  So, I decided to stop it.  The MacBook seemed to break out fine, but the iMac was frozen on the screen showing 19 hours to go.  I would now like to restart the migration process, hard wired to my Time Machine back up via USB, but am worried about how to get the iMac back to a position where I can restart the whole set up.  Can I Command-Q out of the migration assistant?  If that doesn't work, can I switch off and then what do I do to start over?  Thanks!

Power down, using the button in back, restart, CMD+R, launch Disk Utility, erase the HD, quit DU, reinstall the OS, and, on first boot, restore from the MBP (should be faster than mucking with the TM backup), following the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • Migration Assistant - Tiger to Lion?

I'm installing a new iMac for a client soon which currently has Snow Leopard on it.  I'd like to upgrade them to Lion, but before I do I want to make sure that I won't run into any problems with the Migration Assistant.  I believe they are running Tiger on their current Mac... I know there was just a compatibility update for Snow Leopard, but will I run into any problems using it from Tiger to Lion?  How far back will Migration Assistant be compatible?

I'm attempting to do the same thing from an iMac G4 and I can assure you it does not have a Firewire port and it does run OS X Tiger. I cannot find out how to use Migration Assistant but I can assure you that you can connect your computers via a ethernet cable.
As posted several times here, you cannot use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant via network from Leopard or earlier to Lion.
But all iMac G4's came with either 1 or 2 F/W 400 ports:
iMac (Flat Panel), iMac (17-inch Flat Panel) - Technical Specifications
    iMac (17-inch 1Ghz) - Technical Specifications
iMac (USB 2.0) - Technical Specifications
You'll need a F/W 400 to F/W 800 adapter, or a cable with a F/W 400 plug at one end and a F/W 800 plug at the other.  Just so you know what they look like:  http://www.amazon.com/elago-FireWire-400-800-Adapter/dp/B002TF0ZDQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie =UTF8&qid=1312562370&sr=8-1
Or, make a "clone" backup of the G4 on an external  HD, with the Restore tab of Disk Utility (see #7 in Using Disk Utility), or CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, then connect it to your new Mac.

  • HT4413 Does Migration Assistant use a lot of internet data?

We're on a set limit and don't want to exceed it..
Anyone with prior experience would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Migration Assistant doesn't use Internet. If you want to use Migration Assistant via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, Migration Assistant uses the router to migrate data to the other Mac that has to be connected to the same router

  • Migration Assistant Taking Forever. Does that make sense?

I'm trying to use Migration Assistant to migrate between two similar G5 iMacs running Tiger 10.4.11. I did a clean OSX install and all updates on one, and am trying to migrate the one user and files from the other iMac (it has a flaky graphics card, so I want to use the other, healthier one instead).
After several false starts, Migration Assistant via Firewire seems to be running, but estimate for moving ~21GB of docs, apps and files is 21 hours and 15 minutes.
Actually, it's been saying that for the past hour with no indication that it's working or making progress. Does that seem right?
Should I wait 22 hours to find out if i've wasted a day, or can someone confirm that this seems right or wrong. I used the firewire cable yesterday to migrate another iMac to new intel-based iMac with no problems - it was lightening fast, and this seems like I'm watching a dead turtle race waiting for a breeze to blow in to simulate what passes for motion.

That seems way too slow, like 20 times too long easily, but (a) the progress indicator isn't very accurate to start with, usually way too long stated than it actually takes, and (b) it may be having real trouble reading the HD of the other one.
I'd let it go a couple more hours and see if the progress vastly improves.

  • Migration Assistant quitting

I have a new MacBook Pro 13 inch Retina Display and I'm trying to transfer from a 2010 MacBook Pro running snow leopard.  I've been trying to transfer using Migration Assistant via an ethernet cable with a USB adaptor directly between the two computers.  I get as far as the computers recognizing each other, passcodes matching up, etc. but then instead of asking me what types of things I want to transfer, my new Mac seems to quit and goes back to asking me to log in.  Any thoughts on why this is happening or what I can do?
    Thanks!

    Mindy,
It sounds like you're doing everything right, but here's the official procedure. Maybe double check this is exactly what you're doing. What you want is under Wireless or Ethernet migration.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4889
If that doesn't help, you could try wireless though that will take a lot longer. The other option would be to pull the hard drive out of the 2010 and put it in an external enclosure.

If you go that way, it's pretty easy to get at the drive. You need Phillips 00 and a Torx T6 screwdrivers though.
