IMO, wrong choice. Start over, using a FireWire cable and following the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • Migration assistant form a Firewire drive back to a MBP

    Hi
My MBP has been returned for a replacement (3rd Time) and I have made a complete clone of the hard drive with on a fire wire drive. I would like to know if I can use migration assistant to transfer my details using the firewire drive. I don't want to do a complete system transfer, but only my settings etc like migration assistant does it. I cannot loose e-mails and reinstall everything this time round again...
    Please advise.
    Regards
    Mike

If you made a clone of the drive, why not just clone it back on the repaired MBP. That way you would be sure all your files, settings etc. are on your new computer. The Migration Assistant will miss some files. I frequently lose monitor profiles and many apps, such Adobe CS, are broken by MA and need to be reinstalled.

  • Problems with Migration Assistant ..... G3 iMac to G4 iBook

I've run into problems in using the Migration Assistant and a FireWire cable to transfer the data files I had accumulated on an old G3 iMac (running on OS 10.3.9) to a new G4 iBook (running on OS 10.4.6). The cable connection and following the steps of the Assistant went just fine. I instructed the Assistant to transfer the data files but not the applications. However, when the process was all done (according to the Assistant):
    (a) there were no instructions for finishing up and disconnecting the FireWire cable, so after looking around and finding nothing, I just disconnected the cable and immediately lost the orange iMac hard drive icon from the desktop of the iBook (and, from what I can tell, all of the data files that I thought had been transferred); and
    (b) I then discovered that none of the data files that I thought had been transferred to the iBook are there, but all of the applications are there .... i.e., the exact opposite of the instructions I had entered. What now remains in the hard drive of the iBook are an empty Desktop Folder (labeled that it had been transferred from the iMac) and a new System Folder (similarly labeled) containing all of the applications that had been on the iMac.
Thinking that I must have made an error of some sort, I went back and re-ran the entire procedure again. However, I got exactly the same result.
So now, how do I get rid of all the applications that came over from the iMac? Can I just drag that one folder to the Trash? Or have they all been installed and now I need to uninstall them? And if so, how do I do this?
And how do I get the data files over from the iMac to the iBook?
My heartfelt thanks to anyone who can help me undo this mess!

Open the Users folder on your hard disk and see if there are any folders inside that folder with red circles; if so, that is where your data files may be. Log out and then in from the account you migrated; if you're not sure what username and password to use, open the Accounts pane of System Preferences and check or change the settings there. Once done, move the files you want to transfer to the /Users/Shared/ folder and from there to your normal account's home folder when logged in to that account. Once you've moved over everything you want, you can delete the migrated account. The applications that were migrated can be deleted.

  • Do I need a firewire cable to transfer files to my new iMac?

Hi, I have a new iMac coming soon and I want to know the best way to transfer my files, settings etc from my iBook G4 to the new comp. We have wireless at home- can I set up some kind of network? Or do I need to buy a firewire cable and use Migration Assistant? If so, which cable? Thank you

Hmm. I hadn't heard about the problems people have been having. Anyway, yeah, it's probably better to try Migration Assistant with the FireWire cable. From what I've heard (I haven't had to USE Migration Assistant yet; first-time Mac user, and haven't needed a new one yet), Migration Assistant does a good job getting everything switched over, and it's only method is FireWire. So, yeah. LOL. I think that's your best bet.
I'm so jealous. I have a PowerBook G4 (the model RIGHT before the last model; I should have waited a few weeks!), and now I want at least a MacBook. The cheapest MacBook is now BETTER, in many ways, than my PowerBook, besides the obvious things like screen size. AND it's about half the price I got my PowerBook for. This is CRAZY! Haha.

  • Can data be migrated between Macbooks using firewire to thunderbolt?

Can data be transferred using 'migration assistant' via a firewire to thunderbolt link between a Macbook Pro (W80190Z2AGV) and Macbook Pro Retina (C02JC08BF51R)? Both have OSX 10.8.4. Or is there a better/faster alternative to transfer data?

The only thing faster would be Gigabit Ethernet, using the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor. But there's not much in it (800 vs 1000). You'd need a Cat6 cable as well.

  • Trouble with Migration Assistant

I just bought a new Macbook Pro. I have 2.5 year old Macbook pro, running OS 10.4.11. I'm trying to use migration assistant to move everything, but no luck so far. I first tried through the wireless network (knowing it would be slow), but I couldn't get my new computer to see the old one - it would get as far as giving me the passcode to put in the old computer, I'd put that in, and then it would just say preparing or something like that. I waited about 30 min with no luck. So then I went to 3 stores, and eventually found on that sold firewire 800 cables. I tried migration assistant with the firewire option - I get as far as rebooting the old computer and getting the firewire symbol and that's it. The new Macbook pro just keeps saying waiting for computer to reboot. I did upgrade my software on the old Macbook. Not really sure what else to do at this point. Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Can't get migration assistant to recognize other computer

I am transferring files from an older Macbook to a new Mac Mini using migration assistant over an ethernet cable. During setup of the new mini, I was asked to connect the two computers, and use the DVD to install migration assistant on the host computer (eg, Macbook). However, when I attempted to install, I got the message that a new version of migration assistant was installed (v3). So, I ran that version (without rolling it back). THe computers do not appear to 'see' each other. Is this a function of the version differences?
What should I do? Roll back to the older version of Mig Assistant, or update the (new) mini somehow?

Managed to accomplish this over our company intranet (working 1G Ethernet, so took a few hours). HOWEVER, not many of my personal settings or documents were transferred, including documents, music, etc. Also, all the software is 'virginal' in that I need to set it up (eg, iCal needed all my caldav info again, address book was empty). I managed to populate some of this with Mobile Me, but the rest I need to rebuild from scratch.
    ANy thoughts on the matter?

  • Migration Assistant - 18 hours later still migrating?

I began a Migration from my MacBook to a new iMac 18 hours ago! About 4 hours ago the scroll bar read "1 hour and 54 minutes remaining". It still says that, the scroll bar apears to be dynamic but has not moved in 4 hours.
What's happening? If I try and quit out of Migration Assistant - I receive up a pop-up message suggesting this is not advisable. And yet it appears that something has gone wrong and that the migration is stalled with "1 hour and 54 minutes remaining."
    Any thoughts / suggestions?

I used Migration Assistant this weekend (Ethernet cable also) to move everything from an early 2008 MacBook to a new mini.......it first showed 281 hours remaining ( I had about 85 GB to transfer)......it took a while to get going.......but it ended up at more like an hour and a half to actually complete....

  • Migration Assistant quitting

I have a new MacBook Pro 13 inch Retina Display and I'm trying to transfer from a 2010 MacBook Pro running snow leopard.  I've been trying to transfer using Migration Assistant via an ethernet cable with a USB adaptor directly between the two computers.  I get as far as the computers recognizing each other, passcodes matching up, etc. but then instead of asking me what types of things I want to transfer, my new Mac seems to quit and goes back to asking me to log in.  Any thoughts on why this is happening or what I can do?
    Thanks!

    Mindy,
It sounds like you're doing everything right, but here's the official procedure. Maybe double check this is exactly what you're doing. What you want is under Wireless or Ethernet migration.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4889
If that doesn't help, you could try wireless though that will take a lot longer. The other option would be to pull the hard drive out of the 2010 and put it in an external enclosure.

If you go that way, it's pretty easy to get at the drive. You need Phillips 00 and a Torx T6 screwdrivers though.

  • Migration assistant pairing fails

Just bought a new Macbook for my wife, OS 10.6.8
She has been using an old G4, OS 10.5.8
I installed the latest updates to both laptops.
Have tried to use migration assistant using an ethernet cable.
In migration assistant, they won't pair - I have never gotten to the point where I am asked to input the passcode.
Have tried manually setting the IP address, but no luck.
    Any suggestions?

  • Migration Assistant Stuck at "Less than a minute remaining"

Migrating from old G5 single CPU to dual 2.3 G5. Tiger to Tiger. The dual has a clean install from the setup disk, but no software updates -- I just followed the onscreen instructions regarding when and how to do the migration via Firewire target disk mode.
The migration ran for 2 hours, the minutes counting down just fine, but it stopped with "Less than a minute remaining." There it sits, fans blowing, workday slipping away. Any ideas? Is the migration probably finished? Some lonnnng verification occuring?
    Thanks,
    Paul Otteson

Wait another hour. If it doesn't work, you may have insufficient space to finish the migration, or a bad firewire cable for or interface on the drive in question.
Consider the steps suggested for PowerPC to Intel migration. They are more likely to work:

  • Which FireWire Cable for Macbook Pro to Macbook Pro Migration Assistant?

    Hi,
I've just purchased a new Macbook Pro 15" (standard - not retina display) and am planning to transfer my files via the Migration Assistant. My question is, I currently have a mid 2009 macbook pro (2.8GHz, 4GB) and was wondering which firewire cable I need to purchase - there are so many different types!
    Thanks!

Hold T and boot the old Mac's drive to the desktop of the new one or do so during Setup Assistant or later with Migration Assistant.
Setup Assistant runs only once, at first startup when fresh out of the box or when freshly reinstalled from scratch. Migration Assistant is a regular application found in the Utilites folder.
If you're going to move all your stuff over, the easiest and least problematic way is via Setup Assistant. Since the computer is in a completely blank state when SA runs, it can create identical user accounts, permissions, etc., as the original source. MA is an app that runs on an already configured and running system and, hence, can't duplicate user accounts, modify permissions that are already in use, etc.: this can cause vexing issues for new users that may not be to well versed in multiuser operating system administration.
