Migration assistant - waiting for Mac or disks (though they are mounted)

I've got an iMac 24" running Tiger and a new MacBook running Leopard. I want to migrate some stuff to a new account on my iMac.
I've connected the two via FireWire, laptop in FW mode, its disk is mounted on the desktop of the iMac, but MA says "waiting for your old mac to restart" or "waiting for disks to mount" and won't progress further.
Any ideas? I want to back up preferences as well as some software and MA seems the best for this. (I already migrated it from my old iBook to the MacBook).

Try it without FWTDM.

  • Migration assistant update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Hello -- I downloaded SNOW LEOPARD successfully that past week. I did a software update as well afterwards.
Now in preparation for upgrading to LION OS X, I read an article that mentions one must make sure to have the MIGRATION ASSISTANT UPDATE for Mac OS X Snow Leopard installed. I am unsure if this was included in the software updates I performed. One would assume it would be there. BUT there is not a detailed listing of what these combination updates include. HOW can I tell if I have the desired version required to continue on to LION?
Another suggestion was for one to perform FIRST AID on the start up disk. It only says to select your Mac HD and then to "verify" ..... do they mean to VERIFY DISK or VERIFY DISK PERMISSIONS. I have on occasion performed a REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS but not the others mentioned. I do not know what the difference is?
    THANK YOU

I have the same console mesages repeating ad-nasium as you do. What is interesting is I do have the StartuoItems directory but it is empty. The problem I have is that the log-in window comes up as normal, but I can not type in it for about 5-8 seconds. This has started after the latest updates which you mention. Don't know if this issue is related or not. Have deleted the loginwindows and loginitems preferences to no effect.

  • Migration assistant waiting for your mac to connect

I'm trying to utilize the migration assistant to migrate from Windows XP3 to a new iMac.  The migration assistant connects and shows me the selected XP machine, but the XP machine is stuck on "waiting for your mac to connect."  I've confirmed both machines are on the same subnet, I can access the folder shares from the mac, etc.  Uninstalled Symantec Internet Security, disabled windows firewall, made sure firewall is disabled on Mac, no stealth mode on router, etc.

  • Firefox keeps requesting logon credentials for the proxy server, though they are eneterd in the connection settings.

Every time you go to a new page, Firefox prompts for the proxy server login credentials, this has already been entered in the Network settings in Firefox.

    Hi thefrostycat,
It could also be the proxy set up on the network. There is an app for proxy settings: [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lechucksoftware.proxy.proxysettings on the play store] as well as an add on [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/proxy-selector/?src=search Proxy Selector]
Android troubleshooting for GSM device(I do not know if your nexus is, most likely it is not): Access Point Name (APN). Go to Settings > Wireless and Networks > More > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names > [Your data APN] (your device's menu may differ slightly). Check the Proxy field.

Probably a PC issue, you can try calling AppleCare, you are covered for 90 days from the date of purchase and can find the phone number in the owners manual. Also please look over:

    Thomas,
It would also be extremely helpful to those trying to help you if you complted your Profile so we at least know what iMac and version of OS X is installed. Click Your Stuff in the upper right then click Profile and complete the necessary fields including what part of the planet you're located.

I'm using migration assistant to transfer files from my wife old net book to new mac air and the pc dropped out during transfer. I started up migration assistant on the Pc again and now says waiting for mac to connect! New MacBook Air  is stuck at transferring information.  How do I get the process to reconnect and continue?

    Whew, good luck!
What version of OSX is on the older one?

  • Just used migration assistant from one mac to another one.  When I restart the new mac, the old user boots up instead of my new user.  Have to log out then log in.

Just got a new Imac.  I migrated from the old Imac.  When I boot the new Imac, the old user screen boots up.  I have to log out and then log into my new user on the new mac.  Whats up?
    Thanks.

Thanks for your help. But the PowerBook has a Migration Assistant designed for the purpose of transfering files from the old Mac to the new Mac. The steps take me to the point where I'm instructed to restart the old Mac while holding down the "T" key. But nothing happens when I do that. It just restarts and the Migration Assistant on the new Mac still reads "waiting for old Mac to restart".
There has to be a way to do this. I can't install the original applications on the PowerBook from scratch because they were meant to run on Classic. The PowerBook doesn't recognize any of the old Classic installation disks I have from previous Macs (Oddly, the PowerBook has capability to run Classic, but not the actual software-- and no Classic installation disk was provided, unlike the software provided for iBooks. And I can't install any of the System X upgrades because they need to recognize the original application already on the computer in order to upgrade.
I just calculated that if I have to rebuy all the applications I need, I couldn't afford to do it (unless someone can-- or even wants to-- take the old versions off my hands to offset the cost of buying new ones).
There must thousands of graphic designers like me who run a small business and can't afford to re-stock their entire software collection every time they upgrade to a new computer. Why would Apple diss the very people who have been supporting the company (actually keeping it alive) all these years? I don't think they would do that. I'll just have to keep looking for a solution.

  • Migration assistant on source mac never spins forever

I have one mac that's running 10.6.8 and another that's running 10.10.  I am trying to use migration assistant to transfer files from the old mac to the new one.  On the 10.10 machine, I can run through migration assistant, it sees the source/old mac, and it displays the 6 digit code I need to type in.
However, on the old mac, once I get to searching for other computers, it just spins forever.  It never finds the new mac.
Both machines are connected to the LAN via wired connections.  Both can definitely see each other normally.  I tried turning off the firewalls on both macs and it didn't help.  I also tried a direct ethernet connection between the two machines and that didn't help either.
Is it even possible to migrate from 10.6.8 to 10.10?
My next step will be to carbon copy clone the old mac's disk and try to do a startup disk migration to the new mac.
Any other hints would be greatly appreciated!

Pointing migration assistant at a cloned boot disk of the 10.6 machine does work.

  • HT4796 Migration assistant is telling me that it has lost connection with my Mac and to ensure they are on the same network.  They are, and an ethernet cable is plugged into them.  What do i do?

Migration Assistant has been running since yesterday evening.  My Dell is now telling me that its trying to reconnect to my Mac and to ensure they are both using the same network.  I have an Ethernet cable plugged in them and they are both on the same WiFi.  What can I do?

    Hello Wyodor,
thanks for your reply on my question.
You are wright the index file is 308 KB.
And offcourse that I delete my files and documents is not an Iweb problem, but because my English is not that good, that I thougt I try to tell the whole story, and hope people can read trough the lines.
Why I didn't use Iweb to upload to the server is because the server company recommanded to use file zilla. And I am a nobody with this kind of things, so I did exactly what they tell me to do.
No, i did not make a backup of Iweb and the domain file, but reading other messages on this forum showed me that I can maybe try to make empty the cashfile (?)
and otherwise I have bad luck and have to make my website again. Offcourse I have a lot of examples from all the pages (copied from the local map to my USB stick) and my website is aprox. 15 Mb, (not so big) so it will cost me a few nigths.
But I'm still hoping on a miracle :-)
    greetings Lasource

  • My business has been using Appleworks forever. I now have a rubbish mac book pro. I am waiting for Mac to update their software to allow my business to use the 'cwk' drawing files developed over 10 years. letterheads, business cards, box labels etc.

My business has been using Appleworks forever. I now have a rubbish Macbook pro. I am still waiting for Mac to update their software to allow my business to use the many Appleworks files accumulated over the last 10 years. Letterheads, business cards, trademarks, brands, parts labels, box labels etc. etc..  When will this happen?
    Just a Mac user

    Dorothy: I feel your pain!
Here is a post I just assembled for another Appleworks user:
First, read these excellent articles on Appleworks migration:
Appleworks for the modern day, a migration tip by a brody; and
    Abandoning Appleworks by Roger Wilmut.
If you need to run Appleworks 6 to export some data (for example a database, which cannot be opened by any other program):
    a)  If your Mac will still boot into Snow Leopard, partition your hard drive (or add an external hard drive) and install Snow Leopard (and the optional Rosetta) into it and use the "dual-boot" method to boot into Snow Leopard and run Appleworks 6; or
    b)  Install Snow Leopard Server into Parallels and run Appleworks 6 concurrently with Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks:

  • I recently bought a new macbook pro and set it up using the migration assistant and my mac mini.  I can't get the text message forwarding feature to work with both computers.

I recently bought a new macbook pro and set it up using the migration assistant from my mac mini.  I can't get the text message forwarding feature to work with both computers.  It keeps saying that I only have 2 devices setup, my iPad and my macbook pro.  When I mess with the setting on my mac mini, it goes from saying that that is one of the devices to my macbook pro being the 2nd device.  I think that something happened as a result of my using the migration assistant and now it thinks that my macbook pro and my mac mini are one and the same computer.  Any ideas?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

You can't do a backup of icloud to an external drive.  In fact, does your post have anything to do with icloud (you're in the icloud forum)?
What kind of "system backup" are you doing?  Are you using Time Machine?

  • Migration Assistant to another Mac. Help!

Trying to use Migration Assistant, but moth Macs can't find each other on the network. Need Help! I'm simply trying to move my photos and music to another macbook. Does anyone have any information they can provide me with on how to transfer over via ethernet cable?
    Thanks!

Can you plug both Macs - hardwired via Ethernet - into the same router?

  • TS1963 What if I can't find Migration Assistant on my mac! I have updated and installed any available downloads.

I have tried reloading the system and downloading the updates. I am giving this Mac Mini to my father-in-law and I had the same problem before reloading the system when I was trying to load the contents onto my new Mini Server. My solution at the time was to put the mini into external drive mode and use a Firewire cable to connect to the new macmini. I would really like a solution that doesn't envolve buying cables or tearing apart his old computer.
Right now I can't load Migration Assistant on my Mac Mini Server because the Migration Assistant doesn't show up despite various attempts to load it. It is part of the system, so it should be there. I have no reference to this problem because there is no discussion about it or similar problem that appears through google searching.

OS X Servers do not have Migration Assistant - this only on client computers.
If you want your father to use the OS X Server it will be a manual data transfer. It can be done over the network, external USB drive or as you mentioned various cables.

  • Attempting to use Migration Assistant to restore a Time Capsule backup to a mounted partitioned drive?

Had a power surge and my Mac Pro did not fare well. Was able to boot from one of the drives in read only mode, so I did a Time Capsule backup of everything on the drive. Reinstalled Mountain Lion. Booted the computer up and am trying to use Migration Assistant to take the Time Capsule backup and restore it to the 1TB drive. When I use Migration Assistant, it says that there is not enough space on the drive to do the restore. I looked in Disk Utility and saw that the start up disk is another one of the 1TB drives with about 600GB used, therefore not enough space to do the restore. I want to restore to the original drive, but it says it is a "Mounted Partitioned Drive". Can I use Migration Assistant to restore a Time Capsule backup to this mounted partitioned drive?
Thanks in advance for any help - greatly appreciated.

I am not sure, never had to go there, I have multiple bootable clones of the system online and off, and a couple 1500VA/900W UPS units powering everything.
