Migration assistant with photos and music on an external drive

I have an I 7 ready to turn on, I will be transferring from a mac mini. I have 100 gigs of msic and about 80 gigs of photos that my mini access for I tunes and i photo. Will the migration assistant copy the photos and music from the external hard drive? My guess is it will but I wanted to hear it from someone else.
Thank you
Joe

I just move my iphoto's from a iMac to a Mini. I just used the import in the iphoto application, and it worked fine. I found migration to much work to use. Still have not moved itunes yet, but it doesn't have the import like iphoto, has export, so have not looked into the move yet.

  • I am having some really weird problems with my Iphone with photos and music!

The pictures are just all mixed up and in the wrong albums. As far as my music problem. In my playlists for my music I am trying to rearrange my songs in a particular order of listening. It lets me do it but when I hit done it randomely changes them in puts them in all different orders. Can anyone help?

  • Photo and Music storage on External HDD attached to Time Capsule

My MacBook is out of space, and like most people, it is full of music and photos.  I have a Time Capsule for backups but I also have a 1TB HDD attached to the USB of the Time Capsule.  I would love to make that HDD the source for all photos and music so any of my macs can use this source location.
In essence, I want to use the HDD attached to the Time Capsule to serve as the lone storage source for all my photos and music, and have any of my macs seek these files when iTunes or iPhoto is opened on any machine.
Can I do this?  If not, any ideas?  I am trying to avoid requiring a HDD plugged into my laptop all the time.  It kind of defeats the purpose of "laptop" in my mind.  I also switch computers frequently and want to use all the same source files.
    Thanks!!

    Can I do this
Yes, but I guess I'm wondering how you will backup the important data on that drive attached to the Time Capsule. Time Machine cannot do this, so you would have to add yet another drive and manually backup the files or use another commercial application that can backup from a network drive to another network drive.
The better plan might be to add an external USB or FireWire drive attached to a Mac and move all the media there. Then, Time Machine will backup both the Mac and the attached hard drive.
The experts in the iPhoto forum strongly advise against moving your iPhoto library to the Time Capsule or another network drive attached to the USB port on the TIme Capsule.....especially if you are using wireless.  Any disruption when iPhoto is writing to the library can create corruption issues that will likely damage the entire library.
Suggest that you post over in the iPhoto support area to ask the same question. But, be prepared for a lecture if iPhoto guru Terence Devlin answers your post.

Instructions for moving the iTunes library are available in the link below. I've tried this and found that access to the files on the network drive is s-l-o-w.  Not the ideal solution by any means, unless you like waiting.  And, you'll still have to figure out how to backup these files.

  • I really need to speed up my IMAC.  I purchased a new external drive specifically formatted for apple.  I also would like to move some other media (movies and music) to this external drive.  What is the best method for this?

Please help...I need to delete iphoto pictures and back up to external drive without losing pictures. I have the external drive and would like to start this process.  Can you help?

Formatted for Mac is not a format - for iPhoto you MUST verify that it is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
and putting your iPhoto library on an external drive is NOT a backup - you MUST have a good backup plan like Time Machine running or you are 100% guaranteed to lose your photos sooner or later
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
other media questions need to be ask in the forum for the software you use for them - this forum is only for iPhoto and the above instructions are only for iPhoto

  • I have a Time Capsule with the internal disk drive. I have copied my photos and music to the internal drive. Is it possible to access the photos etc. using my Apple Tv to see it on my TV, iPads etc? on my home WIFI.

I have loaded my Time Capsule with my photos, videos, music etc. I want to access these using my Apple TV on my home WIFI for display on my tv's, and Ipads, Has anyone figured out a way to do this? I can do it by access to my Macbook but that's not always convenient.

If the light will not turn on the TC is dead. No matter that the hard disk is running.. it should only run at start up or when it is accessed not constantly.. that means the board in the TC has failed. Apple do not repair them.. They will replace it under warranty or applecare.
If you have gone over the 12month warranty it will still be covered if you have applecare on any computer or an Apple TV. In fact the cost of the apple TV plus apple care is still cheaper than buying a new TC.. so it is a route some people are taking.. certainly depends.. in some places like Europe or Australia now, there is a recognition that statutory warranty must be longer on a product that is premium to the market. 12months is not good enough. Apple will sometimes listen.
They might be fixable but I do not know how.

  • Help with photos and music sync

    Hello,
I recently bought Xperia Z Ultra and I wish to sync my music and some photos from computer (photos to build in memory and music to external SD card). I installed and updated Media Go (v. 2.7 build 341) and I though that will be easy like in ... iTunes. Click what you want to sync and it is done. But here it doesn't work like that. I found that I can check and send music or photos using add to but is it rather copy not sync because I checked if I add new music it won't be send until I use add to again, which is not acceptable.  When I will go to sync media I can sync Recent media, purchases, my top rated songs, recently played, photos added today and flagged items but there is no option to sync all music or all photos.
So how are you managed this issue?
    best regards,
    da1k

I don't sync I simply connect my phone and copy and paste the items to the folders I want them it - If I want details ie: Tagging then I do this before I copy and paste the files to my phone - For music I use mp3tag and for pictures I use my built in to Windows 7 and 8 system or you could use Picasa

  • MIgration assistant doesn't detect my Time Machine  external drive

    Hello.
I just upgraded to Snow Leopard (cleaning first the Mac HD).
After installing SL, I then used the Migration assistant to restore all my previous files and applications previously backed up with Time Machine.
In the Migration Assistant I selected the Time Machine option, and my surprise was not to find my external hard drive in the hard drives list. The only drive that appeared on the list was the Mac HD.
The external Hard Drive can be selected with the finder but not possible though the Migration assistant.
Note: External HD has 2 partitions, one for Time Machine and other with extra data.
    PLease help!!!!
    Thanks
    Pedro

Hi - I am trying to use Migration Assistant on a MacBook Pro to transfer my files from a La Cie external hard drive - which has all my files back up from a 2005 mac book (photos, music etc) The migration assistant does not recognise the LaCie Hard Drive although it is connected to the MacBook via a cable and I can see it on the desk top.
What did the last response mean when the hard drive needed to be formatted a certain way ? Why wouldn't migration assistant just recognise the files directly from an old mac ?

  • Migration Assistant from Time Capsule or from a External Drive

My old iMac (20" Ambient Light Sensor 2.1 , 2.0 GHz) just died.  Troubleshooting indicates the logic board is dead.  Time for a new iMac. I have one on order. I had set up Time Machine to backup this computer onto a Time Capsule.  The Time Capsule was backing up both my laptop and this iMAC.
Unfortunately, I have no idea how to access the iMac Time Machine to make it think I am the old iMac so that I can restore the latest backup.  I don't seem to remember setting up a password.  I'm not even sure what the name of the iMac was on the network.  (For next time what should I make sure that I keep?)  I'm not even sure that it has been backing up regularly. This was my wife's computer and I set it up and then rarely went to it. When I look at the files on the Time Capsule, the iMac file does not have a recent date.  That was question 1.  How can I get my new iMac to recover all the files and settings from my Time Capsule?
Question 2:  I have removed the hard drive from the iMac and will get it working in an external enclosure.  Since it was a G5 computer, this hard drive won't boot up the new computer. But, will Migration Assistant allow me to migrate from the hard drive to the new iMac?  What kind of connection do I need between the external enclosure and the new computer?
    Anyone have any guidance?
    Thanks,
    Dave

You'll want to use Setup Assistant when your new Mac first starts up.  See Using Setup Assistant on Lion for details.  As noted there, it will automatically use the last completed backup.

Yes, assuming neither the drive nor the data on it was damaged when the logic board failed.
What kind of connection do I need between the external enclosure and the new computer?
USB, Firewire/800, or even Thunderbolt -- anything that will connect to the new Mac.  And use Setup Assistant when the new Mac first starts up, not Migration Assistant later on.
Either way, you'll need to select From Time Machine or other disk on the setup screen.

  • Need Help with Playing my music from my External Drive!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

So here's the deal, i just recently got a new macbook pro and i have crap loads of music stored onto my external drive, i want to be able to listen to my music in itunes without having to store all of my music onto my internal hard drive and take up tons of space! HOW DO I DO THIS!!!!

    iTunes prefs -> Advanc3ed.
Set the iTunes music folder location to the music folder on the external drive.
Then File -> Add to library and select the music folder on the external.
You can leave "copy music to iTunes music folder" checked so it copies new music to the external.

  • Problems with indexing and Apple Loops on External Drive

Ok, so I've recently moved my entire "Apple Loops" folder to an external drive and created an alias pointing back the "Audio" folder where the apple loops folder used to reside. The problem is when I bring up the loop browser, it's not finding the loops. Do I need to move the Apple Loops Index to the external hard drive as well? I assumed by creating an alias, it would just go to my external drive.

Someone had said that it's better to use the alias for the apple loops since Logic will always go to where it expects the loops to be first. Which I'm assuming would be faster. But, if it truly doesn't matter and I should just drop all my apple loop folders one by one from my external hard drive, then I"ll do that. Anyone heard about what's faster....alias Vs. external HD direct path?

  • How do I find my files after I transfer my PC files to MacBook using Migration Assistant. Photos? Music?

I thought photos were supposed to be filed in the Mac photo file. Where are the migrated files located?

Photos should be in the Pictures folder. Music should be in the Music folder.

How can I access my parents iCloud account remotely to assist with photo management and printing?

I tried that without any luck. I was hoping I could get Apple to reset it for me or delete the account so I could recreate it or at least tell me what is listed as my birth date, the security question answer.

Yes, any 2.5" dia SATA HDD will be compatible.  The largest are 2 TB at the present time>  Here is a selection from OWC:

There are other vendors as well.
You will need a #00 Phillips and a #6 Torx drivers to install the HDD.
