Migration assistant won't continue

I have recently bought a MacBook Pro but didn't use the migration assistant when I first started up the laptop, instead I just continued to use it.
However now I am trying to transfer information from my old Dell laptop to the new macbook using the migration assistant.
I manage to get as far as slecting all of the folders I want to transfer, clicking continue and then it asks for my login information. It is already all entered automatically however if I press continue nothing happens and if I try to change the information it says that that user is already in use.
If I can get past this log-in bit it will let me transfer.
Please help.

  • Migration Assistant won't see external hard drive

    I have just done a clean install of Leopard onto my MacBook Pro, previously running Tiger. Now, I want to migrate my old user and programs from a backed up volume on an external firewire hard drive. The problem is that Migration Assistant won't recognize my external hard drive.
    I have no other problem mounting or reading the external hard drive from leopard.
    Could the problem be that the external drive has the Apple partition map instead of GUID as reported here? http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1329665
    Any suggestion, solutions or work arounds are gratefully appreciated.

    That isn't a valid link to your picture (it's a link to the file on your computer). You would need to post it to a serve (and remove the spaces in the name) and post that link here.
    However it would appear that your short name is 'dalechristiansen' so presumably you originally created a user with that short name and your full name as.. the full name (unless it was just 'Dale'. Whatever you did before when you created your account is what you should do now. Then you can copy the equivalent folder's contents. (You might have problems replacing some of the root level folders, in which case you shuld copy their contents into the equivalent folders).

    You may need to try this More than Once...  Be sure to Follow ALL the Steps...
    Take your time... Pay particular attention to Steps 3 and 4.
    Make sure you have the Current Version of iTunes Installed on your computer

  • Migration Assistant won't connect to Time Capsule

    I just got my MacBook Pro back from the Apple Store after repairs were done. The hard disk was wiped with Snow Leopard reinstalled. I had run backups to a Time Capsule, but did not reload all my data during the initial startup, thinking I would use Migration Assistant later.
    Now I'm trying to use MA, but it won't connect to my Time Capsule. The first times I tried it over WIFI, but it seemed to hang when the percentages were being calculated for the various categories of data. Now I'm trying with an ethernet connection, and MA seems to hang when its connecting.
    Does anyone have any ideas of how I can recover my data and install it again on my MBP?
    Was thinking of updating to Mavericks while I was at it, but should I fix the backup problem first?

    I read somewhere else that I should not try to backup my new installation to TC because of the risk it will affect my previous store on it.
    When I loaded Mountain Lion and later Mavericks, I continued to use the same backup with no problems.
    TC does not appear in the list of drives. Is that a problem?
    Ignore the Disk Utility idea. My brain wasn't working right. Network attached storage won't show up in Disk Utility.
    Will the computer back up to the Time Capsule? If so, it could be Migration Assistant that isn't working correctly.

    When you set  up your Mac you had to enter a admin password to set up your user account.
    If you did not enter one then try using the  "blank window" as your password. ie Just hit return with nothing entered.

  • Migration assistant won't let me select visible Time Capsule disk

    I'm using Migration Assistant to migrate from my Time Capsule backup after starting up the new computer. It asks me to select my disk, and my Time Capsule backup disk is visible (I've already entered my Time Capsule password). BUT, I cannot select the disk by clicking on it anywhere, and "Continue" remains greyed out. I've checked, and my backup is still on the time capsule. What's happening? Thanks. Doug

  • Migration Assistant won't proceed on the iMac

    Got a new iMac, running 10.10.1 and trying to use the migration assistant to move files from a Windows Vista 64bit SP2 system. Both systems connected via 1Gbps ethernet attached to the same switch and both can ping each other and show they're on the same IP network. I've removed all firewall, virus and malware software from the PC and stopped any service that might cause a conflict.
    I start the migration assistant on both systems, get to the point where both systems are displaying the same 6 digit number. On the PC the continue button is available to select but on the iMac it's grayed out. If I hit the continue button on the PC it sits on a screen saying ready to transfer, select the files you want on the iMac, but the iMac is still sitting on the same screen with the 6 digit number and continue grayed out. Tried multiple reboots and tries to get it going, no joy. Talked to Apple support, they did a remote desktop to the PC, see what I'm seeing but don't see what might be causing the problem.

  • Migration Assistant won't do verification

    I have read the migration assistant tips and tricks, and questions on this matter and I cannot find an answer, please help.
    This is my first apple computer (MBP Retina) and I want to migrate email, calendar etc from my Windows 7 desktop PC.
    I installed Windows Migration Assistant (WMA) on the PC.
    I connected an ethernet cable directly from the PC ethernet port to the MBP thunderbolt port.
    I started the migration assistant software on both computers. On the MBP I select 'Migrate from PC to Mac'.
    The MBP recognises the PC by name, so I click on the displayed name and 'Continue'.
    The MBP throws up a 6-digit verification number and tells me to verify it on the PC.
    BUT.... the PC WMA software never displays the verification number. I can wait for hours. The migration assistant will not proceed without the verification number appearing on the PC.
    I have restarted both computers and the same thing happens.
    Please help me.
    If there is no solution, what is the 'unassisted' way to migrate from PC (Office 2010) to Mac?

    I'm trying to get Leopard on to my daughter's Powermac G4, currently running 10.4.11. Two previous 10.5 installations on my G5 and my son's snow dome Imac failed to complete as updates and the disk had to be erased. In both cases all the apps and settings and backed up documents had to be manually reinstalled.
    This time I did a bit of research and used this page as a guide:

    It tells you how to make a copy of the old system on a Firewire drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, then use Migration Assistant to import everything back once you've updated.
    Everything went well and OS 10.56 is now on the Powerbook as a clean installation. But it all went wrong at the very last stage. The Powerbook will happily boot from my 500Gb Firewire drive running the old cloned system, but when I boot from Leopard and try to migrate the old user back, the Assistant doesn't find my daughter's account. Instead it finds only my own name and identifies 360Gb worth of "additional data".
    Now there is no active system with my name on that disk – only a large amount of data stored in folders. There was an OS on there a long time ago but I thought I'd got rid of that.
    I can understand the Assistant finding the vestiges of that old ID from invisible files on the drive, but why won't it then go on to find the fully working IDs that have just been installed there? It's got me seriously tearing what's left of my hair out.

    Rather than connecting "on the same network", use Create Network from the airport menu icon and connect the two notebooks directly and thus get an "N" connection. Ensure that you turn on file sharing, turn off the firewalls on both computers on this singular network you have created. Then you should be able to migrate if you are the "owner" or administrator as set up on both computers. Follow the directions... post back if this does or does not work.

    Hi everyone!
    I recently purchased a new MBP 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, running 10.8.3 now. I'm trying to use migration assistant do transfer my files from a MBP 2.8 GHz Interl Core 2 Duo (running 10.8.3 as well) via firewire. I've puchased a thunderbolt to firewire adapter since the new MBP is not support firewire port anymore. However, the two computer was recognized when I was using wireless transfer but not the firewire connection. The wireless transfer was estimated over 80 hrs to transfer the files. After talking with Apple Support, I was informed that the firewire will be must faster. But the two computer won't recognize each other! What did I do wrong here? Please help!

    I have the exact same problem. When setting up the new MacBook, I attached the firewire cable and restarted the PowerBook into target disk mode. The Firewire symbol appears on the screen but the MacBook gives the error message "There are no versions of MacOS X available on your old Mac". I wanted to test if it is a problem with the MacBook, and found that the MacBook will recognize and mount a portable firewire hard drive. Furthermore, when I tried attaching it to an intel iMac, it recognized it and was ready to import files from it. Therefore it seems that the problem is that the OS X 10.4.11 on the PowerBook is somehow 'invisible' to the MacBook migration assistant. I tried repairing permissions on the old PowerBook, but that didn't help. In the meantime I also ran software update on the MacBook, which brought it up to the very latest version of Leopard.
    Could it be that the version of OS X needs to be the same on both machines? Next I am going to backup the PowerBook, then upgrade it to Leopard, then try again. I am surprised more people haven't had this problem, at least I have seen few postings about it.

    In each case we get through the point of entering the code from one computer to the other and things chug along, but the screen never comes up asking which items I want to migrate.  The Macbook Pro displays a dialog saying that communication was lost from the other computer.  I'm given the option to hit cancel which will abort the process (though it never does) or hit OK to continue to try (which never results in success.  Meanwhile the MBA just says "processing."
    This whole process has been very frustrating.  I've read any applicable posting I could find here, but haven't found anything that solves the problem.
    Here are some questions I had:
    - do specific sharing preferences have to be set on both machines?
    - I believe the ethernet port on his MBP works OK.  I turned off Airport and was able to connect through ethernet to the Internet.  Is there any other way to tell if the ethernet port isn't communicating?
    - I tried doing the initial transfer while the two computers were with me for the weekend.  Now he's back at school 4 hours away.  Is there a way I can screen share with one or both computers to continue to troubleshoot them remotely?  If so, pointing me to the source to do that would be helpful as I've not tried it before.

    I always Software Update, install programs from fresh sources, enter the serials, then transfer files manually into their same respective (Music, Pictures, Documents etc) folders on the new Mac as this way it keeps a new boot drive optimized for best computer performance.
    All one has to do is use the same drive name and set up the same user name on the new Mac as with the old Mac.
    Doing this way this way keeps the iTunes song location pathnames, playlists, others etc work just like before.
    There are third party programs that cause all sorts of headaches using migration/setup assistant as they have part of themselves installed in the system, which migration and setup assistant doesn't transfer.
    Also migration assistant transfers the user, so now there are two on the machine which the original that was created when the machine was setup has to be removed if not needed.
    And to avoid another serious headache, stay away from OS X Lion, seriously for at least several months or more, you likely could sell that new Snow Leopard MacBook AIr for a few hundred dollars more than you paid for it right now.
    Lion has a LOT, a LOT of issues, not only with the major changes inflicted, like Autosave, scrolling is backwards, there are no boot disks (requiring a fast and reliable Internet connection to install Lion again) and other nightmares as well a a LOT of third party software and hardware drivers are just not ready for it yet.
    Lion will NOT run Rossetta based PowerPC software, so a lot of programs on the old Mac might not run anymore, requiring to pay for new ones, if ones exist yet.
    You can download the Lion installer and create a backup image to burn to the DVD or boot off a USB and delete the installer on the Mac without installing. You can also hold the Option key in the MacAppStore on Purchases allows you to download it again. It might be available to download for free without installing forever, if not it's only $29. Not much to save yourself a ton of more headaches as they work out the issues and software gets updated for it.

    I found that I needed to create another temporary admin account and run the migration assistant from that account. Then the option to replace the original admin account was no longer greyed out.
    I suppose one could enable root and log in as root as well to do this.

  • Migration Assistant Won't Recognize My Old iBook

    Well ... my brand new MacBook ... all set to move an account from my old iBook ... over ... and it won't go ...
    I have followed the instructions exactly ... restarted my iBook in Target Disk Mode .... firewire attached ... and Migration Assistant says ...

    Any suggestions .... it's not my firewire cable ... I use it all the time ... everythings hooked up right ..

  • Boot camp assistant won't continue.

    When I run the boot camp assistant application it gives me an error that I need to update system software. I have updated and still says I need to update. I have run boot camp before on this machine without any problems. I did have a hard drive crash and used the migration assistant to put it back as before with time capsule. Everything else has been and continues to work fine.

    I too am having a similar problem. I am trying to install Windows in a newly created Boot Camp partition. I have Windows 7 but Boot Camp Assistant only mentions XP and Vista. I put in my installation disk of Windows 7 but it refuses to install it. My OS is fully up to date.
