Migration assistant won't migrate admin account

On my G5 I created the admin account (which is the account I usually use) with the same name, short name and password as the admin account on my older machine.
When I use migration assiatant, it brings up a "Duplicate Account Found" dialogue box which offers to rename the account I am transferring (which I don't want to do as the name is correct on both machines) and do not transfer the user account (which I certainly don't want as transferring the admin account is the whole point).
The option to replace the existing account with the one I am transfering (which might be the one I want) is greyed out.
What am I supposed to do? Don't Apple test the most obvious situation?
Beige G3   Mac OS X (10.3.5)

I found that I needed to create another temporary admin account and run the migration assistant from that account. Then the option to replace the original admin account was no longer greyed out.
I suppose one could enable root and log in as root as well to do this.

  • Fixing everything in new migrated Admin account

I have been trying to move everything from my old Mac to the new Mac mini.
By Time Machine and two Migration Assistant tries until the Mail got ok.
I would like to get all feedback I can get on the subject:
First of all, I am unsure myself about especially the Unix and underlying things. Like Admin rights.
I have right now about 5 accounts, One old Admin, which I intend to keep. I moved things I wanted to have to a new (user) account, and thereby I left "a segmentation/layer/period of files and things" there. So it's left for two reasons. And One account that I made just to have a clean iPhoto and account for a relatives project. And then also I made a new account during the mini install (used when migrating the first) time, the id of which I'd really like keep as main user account. But I seem to have gotten things and Mail especially, working on a fifth account, Admin right now, which got there when I migrated the second time.
So now I plan to use the fifth Account as main (user) account. But I'm a bit unsure what rights and things that have to be fixed for things to work even though I remove the Admin rights.
And I really would like to keep the fourth account as main Admin account, it has the id I'd like to keep.(I think I read somewhere that you cannot change the id:s.) I'm not sure how to clean out whatever excess files that this account may have.
From the old user account I also need to move the App and settiings files to the main user account, although I hope that the second migration mixed a lot.
So I think I have a good plan for all accounts.
I had trouble getting the Mail migrated ok. It did not work ok to move all mail between accounts, so I skipped this. I also did once a Mail "Backup" on Mail - is this how I could have moved the mails between accounts?
Another things is iTunes. It now seems ok on my user account, although the Playing Lists (also "Bought") seems to have got lost. ?!
I looked at the size of User files after the migrations to the two different user (Admin for the moment) accounts, they seem to maybe be identical.
I have to go through all Apps to check that my user account works, especially when I turn off the Admin rights.
I am quite unsure if especially all settings are ok.
I think the Moble Applications for my iPad gor moved ok. I have to dowload some App to to see if that works.
One major task is how to fix all file system rights, since I now realise that I will switch both my Admin and the User account.
I have my user files on an external disk, where it is located in Users/account/* I am a bit unsure how to set those rights.
Finally, the things I missed, whas that I turned off Time Machine backup during the first Migration, but I missed the second time so I got a strange Time Machine backup made in the middle of things. I am unsure if I in any safe way could get rid of this backup. Right now Time Machine is turned off, until I am satisfied with things.
    I also now realize that:
The Install and Migration was a bit troublesome as it got done.
I suspect that I should have run Migration Assistant booted from a USB stick Mountain Lion that I have, or from a temporary partition or something. So that I did not have to so much fixing afterwards. (I mayby never wanted extra accounts, and I am not sure how things will work out now.)
And finally, now, I would appreciate ideas and pointers to Forum postings about these matters. I am very thankful for what really good stuff I found after a while, Migrating was not as easy as it seemed to be! (Also, you should not do things like this if your not concentrated... :-(   ).
    Thanks!

    Thanks!
As I have now, I will do as I planned. But the second Migration I did was to Migrate a second time. From Restored OS. But I had three accounts from before, som that still was a problem.
The Setup Guide was great, at least I now know how to fix the moving and rights setting.
I am unsure if also my unneccessary Time Backups still would have to removed, so I would not give it anoter try.
I am grateful for all ideas!

  • Migration assistant won't transfer user account

    Hi
Just used migration assistant to transfer data from a Tiger iMac to a leopard iMac, and while all the files and apps came across it did not copy the user account. I then connected to the host computer via target disk mode and see the user account is not accessible, but it is when connecting normally over a network.
I plan to wipe the new imac and start again, but anyone any ideas how to make the user account visible over firewire and TDM?
    Thanks

The migration assistant behaved as usual, I've used it countless times, it came up with the list of accounts, in this instant there was only the one, and all the boxes were ticked to transfer all apps, files etc and all data from this account.
At the end of the transfer the computer restarted, but instead of going straight to the desktop, it ran through the account creation procedure.
All data and apps outside of the user folder have been copied but nothing in the user folder. Thats when I noticed that connecting to the old imac in TDM does not allow access to the data in the user folder,
please clarify that. do you mean that you don't have permissions to open that folder? or do you mean something else?
their is only one account which it is set to automatically log into. There are no passwords or security, file vault is not on and all sharing is enabled, access is fine over a normal network connection.
    Any suggestions?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options, press the padlock at the bottom left corner of the System Preferences window and choose the second user account next to "Automatic login". Your computer will always log in to this user account whenever you start up Mac OS X.
If you haven't got anything in the first user account, you can remove it from System Preferences > Users & Groups after logging into the second user account

  • After migrating an account to my MacBook Air, it still has its old settings and won't let me find the Applications folder - how do I fix this?

So I just migrated (using the Assistant) my Admin account from my old Powerbook G4 to my MacBook Air (used) , but now it's disregarding its new Trackpad settings (such as scrolling and double finger tapping, etc.) It also won't let me find my Applications folder (I used Finder), whereas the Admin account can, but see back on my old laptop I this account was an Admin. I feel like there's something written that's telling it to behave like it did on the Powerbook. I don't know - me no professional, yo, that's why I'm here. NOTE: Before I migrated, I'd started using the Admin account on here; for example, I signed in with my appleid since I figured the accounts could be merged - guess not. A family member's been helping me, but I wanted feedback from the forum.
    Thanks, guys!

What exactly is the error you get?
How are you attempting this copy?
There's almost certainly a way to accomplish what you want to do (probably best from the terminal possibly copying the entire user dir and fixing up permissions, etc.) but I'm not sure you will end up with the results you want.  There are plists in the preferences dir that you probably don't want to copy over (e.g., many of the com.apple.* prefererences).  And many apps also create more than just plists.  There may be stuff in Application Support, LaunchAgents, Internet Plug-Ins, etc.).  And this would be stuff you do want to copy.  Bottom line is it is not a trivial exercise which is probably why the system is slapping your hands for even attempting it

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

  • Migration Assistant won't see external hard drive

I have just done a clean install of Leopard onto my MacBook Pro, previously running Tiger. Now, I want to migrate my old user and programs from a backed up volume on an external firewire hard drive. The problem is that Migration Assistant won't recognize my external hard drive.
I have no other problem mounting or reading the external hard drive from leopard.
Could the problem be that the external drive has the Apple partition map instead of GUID as reported here? http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1329665
Any suggestion, solutions or work arounds are gratefully appreciated.

That isn't a valid link to your picture (it's a link to the file on your computer). You would need to post it to a serve (and remove the spaces in the name) and post that link here.
However it would appear that your short name is 'dalechristiansen' so presumably you originally created a user with that short name and your full name as.. the full name (unless it was just 'Dale'. Whatever you did before when you created your account is what you should do now. Then you can copy the equivalent folder's contents. (You might have problems replacing some of the root level folders, in which case you shuld copy their contents into the equivalent folders).

  • Migration assistant won't migrate

Trying to migrate from my son's Macbook Pro to his new Macbook Air.  Both are running 10.6.8 and have had all the latest software updates run.  Tried wired (with ethernet adapter for the MBA) and wireless - he doesn't have a Time Machine backup to try.
In each case we get through the point of entering the code from one computer to the other and things chug along, but the screen never comes up asking which items I want to migrate.  The Macbook Pro displays a dialog saying that communication was lost from the other computer.  I'm given the option to hit cancel which will abort the process (though it never does) or hit OK to continue to try (which never results in success.  Meanwhile the MBA just says "processing."
This whole process has been very frustrating.  I've read any applicable posting I could find here, but haven't found anything that solves the problem.
Here are some questions I had:
    - do specific sharing preferences have to be set on both machines?
    - I believe the ethernet port on his MBP works OK.  I turned off Airport and was able to connect through ethernet to the Internet.  Is there any other way to tell if the ethernet port isn't communicating?
    - I tried doing the initial transfer while the two computers were with me for the weekend.  Now he's back at school 4 hours away.  Is there a way I can screen share with one or both computers to continue to troubleshoot them remotely?  If so, pointing me to the source to do that would be helpful as I've not tried it before.
Thanks in advance for your advice.
    Patrick

  • No Admin account after failed Migration

Hi, I have been having many problems with the new hard drive I just got to replace a failed drive.
The first thing I did was attempt to restore from a backup with 10.6, while booted into 10.4. That gave me the gray screen of death.
Reinstalled 10.5 and attempted to restore the backup using Migration Assistant, but the harddrive with the backup didn't mount and wasn't recognized by the computer.
Then I reinstalled 10.6, and after several failed attempts, finally got the computer to recognize my backup harddrive. I tried to use migration assistant from a Guest account so I could replace the Admin account on the computer with the Admin account from the backup.
When I restarted the computer after the Migration (which looked like it had gone well), there was no Admin account, only Guest. and on top of that, it's requiring a password to login to the Guest account, but I can't figure out what the password would be, it shakes no on every attempt.
I haven't been able to check if my files are there or not, because I can't login. I did verify disk permissions, and a lot of stuff was wrong, so I repaired but still could not log in.
I'm assuming I'll have to start from scratch with a new install of the OS and then run Migration Assistant again, this time without attempting to replace the new account with the backup account. Any insights as to how I can prevent this from happening again or how I can fix it?

Thank you! Got everything back to normal... only weird thing was my harddrive didn't have room for everything that was on there before from the back up. Easy to fix, though.

  • Error when using super admin account to migrate from Communigate Pro to exchange 2013

    Hi everyone,
We are facing issues to migrate mails from communigate pro to exchange 2013 using 'MigrateIMAP.pl' tool. Communigate pro has a super-admin account which can retrieve the mails from any mailbox but when sending to Exchange 2013, there is no such super-admin
account. I have created a user account granting it full access to all databases using the following:
    Get-MailboxDatabase -identity “mailbox name” | Add-ADPermission -user <account name> -AccessRights GenericAll
    Get-mailbox | Add-MailboxPermission -User <account name> -AccessRights FullAccess -InheritanceType All
The tool uses the following command: (x.x.x.x is for server IPs & mytestlist contains user accounts to be migrated)
    ./migrateIMAP.pl -d -I -U -s 100 -L mylog7 -e superadmin:password\<i -S x.x.x.x -f
    exchangeadmin:password -D x.x.x.x -i mytestlist
The IMAP4 logs shows the following error:

  • Migration problem (created second admin account)

So I just got a new Macbook Pro and wanted to transfer my music and documents from my time machine from my old Macbook.
I did it, but now I have a second Admin account with the music and documents. I don't want a second admin account and would like to delete it.
I only want one admin account, so how would I migrate the music and documents from the time machine to my current admin account?
So my questions are how do I delete the second admin account that was created and just mirgate it to the current admin account?
Another question that is off topic is: the feature on safari that when you quit safari that it opens up the same window. Can that be changed to just being the homepage at all times when I reopen safari after it was quit?

Drag them over to the original accounts Public folder, or move them to the hard drive level Users/Shared folder. You may experience some permissions problems you will have to fix.

  • Migration assistant, now I have 2 accounts, I only want one.

Hello, I am new here and would like some help.
I have a new Macbook pro with Lion 10.7.5. And I just got done transferring everything over from my old Macbook w/ 10.5.8
So now I have 2 admin accounts on my new Mac. But what I want is just one admin. account on my mac.
    What do I do?
Do I delete the account set up on the new mac, and just log in with the transferred account. Or do I have to manually transfer everything using shared folder.?
And then delete the old account?
I am sure there has to be a simple way around this.
I am probably missing something really simple.
    Please help.
    -Thanks

do I have to manually transfer everything using shared folder.?
    Yes
And then delete the old account?
Yes, when your sure and ready to do so.
I am sure there has to be a simple way around this.
There was SetUp Assistant you missed setting up the new Mac, it creates the first account on the machine.
If you had a Firewire cable connecting the two Macs and held T booted the old Mac into Firewire Target Disk mode, then Setup Assistant would have transferred that sole account to the machine.
You can still go this route, but will have to erase and install 10.7 from Apple's servers, so really it's the same amount of work either way.
I think using Users/Admin/Public > Dropbox folder is better, that shoudl change the permissions on the files to the new account.

  • Migrating One Account from Powerbook G4 to New Macbook Pro?

Bad news / good news.  Bad news: my Powerbook died.  Power connector won't power it and the battery won't charge.  Good news: the last thing I did with it was make a full back up with SuperDuper!.
My daughter was using it and her only concerns are getting her music and pictures over to the new computer (refurb Macbook Pro, 13").
So, I'm thinking I could create an admin account on the new computer and then copy her home folder from the backup to the new computer.
The only "gotchas" on this would be:
Having the new computer recognizing the copied home folder as an account - it should, shouldn't it?
iPhoto '11 reading the older iPhoto database - again, ought to work, right?
Authorizing the new computer on iTunes - easy
Any applications that she had on the Powerbook - I can re-install them on the new computer
Did I miss anything?  Any problems that anyone anticipates?  Is there a better way?
Also, how do I de-authorize the old computer if it won't boot (without de-authorizing ALL computers)?
    Bill

    William Schmid wrote

As Macjack says, you can migrate them.
But you can't "pick and choose" -- you must migrate all or none.  However, Migration Assistant won't transfer an app if an app of the same name already exists, so it won't overlay newer versions of apps with older ones.
See Using Migration Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard for instructions and details; note the pink boxes toward the bottom.

  • Migrated User Account does not appear at login

Hi: I was having a few glitches with Leopard for my main user account (screen dimming did not work). So I backed up the computer to another disk using Super Duper. I did a clean install of Leopard, did the updates and then used the migration assistant to reimport my user accounts. On the first try, I actually did not migrate the main account I wanted so I used the migration assistant for a second time to import the user information I wanted.
A folder was created in the user folder with all the documents associated with the the main account I wanted to migrate, however on login, this user account does not appear.
Is there a way I can make this account appear at login.
    Thanks
    Mike

do the following. log in as an admin user and run the following terminal command (copy and paste, do not retype, please)
    sudo rm /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/users/short-user-name.plist
Instead of short-user-name put in the above the short name of the migrated user. It's the same as the name of that user's home directory in /Users folder.
You'll be prompted to enter your admin password (which you won't see as you type it). that's normal.
Restart and try creating the account with that shortname. it will say that a home directory by that name already exists and ask if you want to use it. say "yes".
you'll now be able to log in into that account.
