Migration Assistant Won't Restore Data, Mavericks, from 10.8

This is f---ed up!  I hope I can find an answer here...
I am trying to do one of the most basic things:  Restore data, apps and settings from a USB Mountain Lion Time Machine backup to my new Mavericks based machine.
Migration assistant sees the disc fine, will let me get to the "restore" screen where there are 3 check boxes for restoring data, settings and apps from a time machine backup.
Unforutnately, it doesn't work.  It says I have about 400k worth of data, settings, and apps to restore, but this is absolutely wrong.  I've got about 800GB of stuff to restore, and appearently Migration Assistant doesn't see 99.9999% of it.
Any idea what's wrong here?
I did encrypt the home folder on my old machine, but NOT the time machine backup because I didn't want this problem!  (It happened anyway).
Any help is greatly appreciated!

MA doesn't work fine!  It didn't restore any of my apps, none of my data, and I am not sure what settings it set, but nothing I noticed right away.
I DID use the setup assistant at boot, same deal!
Contacting Apple Support is usually a pain, and takes too long.  If they can't fix it on the phone (which is usually the case when I call), they want a genius to look at it, and that involves taking the machine down to the apple store.
By the time I have done all that, I can just re-load things myself.
No worries, I just restored my e-mail and browser settings.  Those are the biggest things, and I can pull contacts etc off my iPhone.
I just wish the thing had restored like it is SUPPOSED to.
Anyway, thanks for the reply!  =)

  • Migration Assistant doesn't restore to latest backup

    Hello,
I just initialised my internal HD. I then restored from my Time Machine backup. The fact is that it restored from an April backup while I actually performed a backup yesterday and browsing TM via the "Star Wars" interface shows files I added yesterday as expected.
Is there a way to restore my MBPro from where I left before initialization without having to manually seek for every file changed in the last month?
    thanks

A full restoration from Time Machine is only possible from last completed backup,
Not so.  You can do a full restore from any backup (as long as System files weren't excluded), per the sample in my previous post.
It's Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant that automatically use the most recent backup.
Now, my hypothesis is that Setup Assistant can't see my latest backup because it has a later version of OS X on it, is it correct?
No.  While you can't go "backwards" from a newer "Major" version of OSX to an older one (such as Mountain Lion to Lion), you can use a 10.8.3 backup with Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant running on 10.8.2.  (But you should upgrade to 10.8.3 ASAP.)
What do you mean by it "can't see" the backup?   Where is it -- on a Time Capsule, or external HD?  Is it encrypted?  Does nothing appear, or does it look like your internal HD?  (If it looks like your internal HD, but has a green or yellow icon, that's actually your backups).  Post a screenshot if in doubt.
And Migration Assistant won't let me restore the users from a backup of the same machine it is on?
Yes, it will.  But if a user account has exactly the same name as one already on the Mac, it will make you rename one.
I saw the image you posted but it showed complete backups only and I need a more recent one.
EVERY Time Machine backup is, in effect, a full one.  "Complete" on that window means OSX was included.  If you don't back up System files, you can't restore OSX.

  • Migration Assistant won't alow all it's options

Installed Leopard on my MacBook. Before that, made bootable copy of my old system on external USB hard drive. Now, when Leopard is on my Mac, I tried to use Migration Assistant to transfer my data, but it won't allow me one of it's options which I need: "Replace the existing user account with one you're transferring".
I've done this before between two MacBooks running Tiger, with FireWire cable. It worked just fine.

I finally solved the problem by disconnecting the Time Capsule ethernet cable from the internet.  Then the sparsebundle suddenly appeared.

  • Migration Assistant won't see external hard drive

I have just done a clean install of Leopard onto my MacBook Pro, previously running Tiger. Now, I want to migrate my old user and programs from a backed up volume on an external firewire hard drive. The problem is that Migration Assistant won't recognize my external hard drive.
I have no other problem mounting or reading the external hard drive from leopard.
Could the problem be that the external drive has the Apple partition map instead of GUID as reported here? http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1329665
Any suggestion, solutions or work arounds are gratefully appreciated.

That isn't a valid link to your picture (it's a link to the file on your computer). You would need to post it to a serve (and remove the spaces in the name) and post that link here.
However it would appear that your short name is 'dalechristiansen' so presumably you originally created a user with that short name and your full name as.. the full name (unless it was just 'Dale'. Whatever you did before when you created your account is what you should do now. Then you can copy the equivalent folder's contents. (You might have problems replacing some of the root level folders, in which case you shuld copy their contents into the equivalent folders).

  • Migration assistant won't launch

    Hi there,
I recently purchased a new Imac 2.66ghz and want to import all my data off my old eMac 1ghz.
The firewire ports on the eMac don't work, so I was wanting to transfer it over ethernet.
I know I can use Migration Assistant to do that, but when I try to launch it on the old computer, it bounces in the dock a bit, then quits.
I had a look in the package contents within Migration Assistant, and tried to load it from within the MacOs folder. I got a telnet style window with the following text:
Last login: Sun Jun 1 09:25:56 on ttyp1
    /Applications/Utilities/Migration\ Assistant.app/Contents/MacOS/Migration\ Assistant; exit
    Welcome to Darwin!

I don't have the knowledge to know what to do next. Can somebody please help?
    Many thanks.

    Hi Lachlan,
To use the Migration Assistant, you do need a Firewire connection.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
By default, Migration Assistant creates a new user account where it puts all the transferred data. Just go to  > Log Out, and log in the new user that Migration Assistant has created, so you will be able to access to the transferred data.
If you want to merge the data into the first user account, use the Shared folder (it's in /Users/Shared) to put the transferred files there, and then, on the first user, go to the Shared folder and put all the data in the folders you want

If it backed up the lock file, then Lightroom was open when Time Machine ran, and the backup therefore may be corrupted.  You could try restoring that backup (without overwriting your week ago version) and see if it'll open.  If it does, you're off and running.  What methods have you tried?

  • Migration assistant won't work via thunderbolt in Mavericks

I've followed exactly the instructions for doing a migration assistant data transfer via thunderbolt, per this document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872?viewlocale=en_US
My target computer will not see my source computer via thunderbolt. If I turn on wifi, it will see it, but it says it will take 50+ hours to transfer. I have a thunderbolt cable and two thunderbolt equipped macs running Mavericks (mid 2011 iMac --> late 2013 MBP Retina).
Anyone have any thoughts on a solution?

Go to System Preferences on the Old Mac, locate Start Up Disk in 4th Row of Icons, Select Start Computer in Target Disk Mode.
    On New Mac /Applications/Utilities/Migration Assistant
Once in Migration Assistant Select From Another Mac, Startup Disk, Time Machine Backup, or Disk
Then on next Screen Choose from a Disk
To Migrate Old Photos, Music, and Documents select and check Users and choose Specific User
Choose Applications to Migrate Applications, other data and settings as well
If you encounter the Problem, where the username of the old folder is the same as the username of the home folder on the New Mac, Look at PH14081 and complete steps 6-15 to merge old folder with new folder.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14081
    6. Change Name of old folder to accountname1
    7. Migrate
    8. After Migration Go to New Admin User, Create a Test User, Log out of new Admin and into Test User
    9. When in Test User Delete New Admin User and Home Folder, Do not do this Securely as it will take some time to complete
    10. Once New admin and folder are deleted go into Finder select Username1 Folder, Control Click or Two Finger Click for Trackpads > Select Get Info, Change accountname1 to accountname
    11. Go back into System Preferences> Create New User with "accountname" as new accountname, set Admin Password>Select Create New User
    12. Dialogue Box will Appear A folder already exists with this Username>select use Existing Folder
    13. Log out of Test User into Username>System Prefrences>Delete Test User

  • Migration problem: migration assistant won't migrate both user accounts from time machine backup

My Mac was formatted due to some technical issues. Before handing to the lab- I backed it up using time machine ( and only that ).
I had two user accounts on the Mac before handing it to the lab.
One of them I never actually used -I'll call it the secondary.
The second one was the main one - which I used  all the time - the principal account. All my data is there on that account.
The Mac was formatted at the lab.
Using the setup assistant I migrated one user from the Time Machine Backup.
Only later I realized it was actually the account I never used.
Since I never used it - I couldn't remember the login password and had to reset it, took a while.
I then tried to to migrate the principal account - the one I actually wanted to migrate, in the fist place, during the setup procedure -  using the migration assistant.
At the relevant window I tick the principal account- the mac does some thinking and then in the login window my only options are the secondary account and guest account, the principal account is not to be seen.
I'm really really stressed and worried.
BTW -when looking into the actual external disk used for the Time Machine at this path: computer name--> backups-->macintosh HD -->users--> principal account - I see all the folders and files with a 'no entry' icon next to them.
clicking on the folders - I get the following notice - 'the folder xxx can't be opened because you don't have permission to see the contents''
    What's going on?
    I'm running on a 2.9Ghz intel core i5
    16GB RAM 1600MHz DDR3
    SW version: 10.9.4
would appreciate any kind of help,
    Thanks
    Dana

    thanks,
the thing is the Mac was behaving strangely - that's why I sent it to the lab in the first place.
This Mac is just over a year old but it's content was initially migrated from the older mac.
And it (the new Mac) wasn't working properly from the get go..
It took ages for it to start up and wouldn't start up if any external disk was attached (via USB).
I had to start it up and only then connect external disks.
In the lab - They couldn't find and HW issues.
So they formatted and reinstalled the OS - I think that's all they've sone in the lab
The idea was to start afresh and slowly reinstall softwares - only those necessary.
So, having said all that- does that change your answer?

  • Migration Assistant hangs when transferring data from Windows 7 to mac

My PC is a Windows 7 64 bit.  When I run Migration Assitant, I get as far as the screen that has my Windows Name and my Windows Account Name. Those are filled in automatically.  When I click "Continue", nothing happens.
    Any ideas?  Thanks.

I agree with the idea of an enhancement request, MA should have some more options if used later, normaly users a curious to log into the fresh system, and transfer data and settings at a later date.
Unfortunately, a "merge" option, where it would add things to an existing user account, isn't realistic.  That would work fairly well for such things as documents, where everything is in separate files (although settings and preferences would get a bit tricky).
But not for things like iCal, AddressBook, or Mail, where there are complex structures.  Trying to merge those in any automated way would be very complex.   Even worse would be 3rd-party apps that Apple can't possibly know how to handle.
One thing that might help would be rewording the "You can transfer information later using Migration Assistant" line at the bottom of the Setup Assistant window:
A number of us have asked for that to be worded differently -- warning that it's much better to do it first, or not to install stuff you're going to need, or something.   All to no avail, of course.

  • Migration Assistant Won't Migrate User Account from Time Machine

I am trying to move my wife's user account from a Time Machine backup using Migration Assistant.  Migration assistant chugs along for 2 1/2 hours and says everything was transfered hunkie-dorie.  However, when I try to log her on, I can't.  When I log on as me, I went to System Prefs --> Accounts, her username is there.  However, when I look inside the Users folder, none of her information is there.
    thanks in advance,
    tim

No Filevault on my computer and hers.
Doesn't work in Save Boot, either.  That is the puzzle.  Her account appears at the login screen--even the flower pic. that was migrated from from the Time Machine backup. The login screen will not accept any password.  I know I'm typing it correctly.  Her account appears in System Prefs --> Users, but it's not in the Users folder on my disk drive.

  • Migration assistant crashes when restoring time machine backup from mountain lion

    Hi
I installed a new HDD in my MacBook Pro Mid 2009, installed the original OS again and tried to import using the Setup/Migration Assistant. It told me that since the time machine backup is newer, this can't be done. So I first upgraded to Mountain Lion (suspecting that I can install my SnowLeopard TM-backup there) and tried the same. The migration assistant started, found the image (on Tiime Capsule) and started to calculate the items that need to be transferred. After 17hours, I interrupted it.
Next thing was to upgrade the old HDD with mountain lion, create a fresh TM backup of this on an external USB drive and try the same. It finds the image, identifies the files (about 420GB), I can see the users, all fine. When I hit Next, it starts to calculatate of locate the files. I assumed that my drives were not the fastest ones so I did expect it to take a while. This time I interrupted it after 34hours as it was still giving me the "progress" bar.
For all I know, I have a TM-Backup of Mountaion Lion and a freshly installed Mountain Lion and I am using the Apple software for transfer - perfect world, no?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    patPfe

The migration assistant or the original backup?
I tried WiFi, Ethernet and on the second attempt with a fresh backup on a USB drive.
