Migration assistant wont transfer applications

Just updated to Leopard with a clean install. After connecting up my external clone of my previous 10.4.11 system, I set about transferring my 2 users and additional applications over. Towards the end of the process, with MA saying 'less than one minute remaining' and 'transferring files to support applications', I watched as this went on for 23 minutes, my external HD had long since showed it was no longer being read from, and eventually I had to force quit it. My users had been transferred over just fine, but none of the applications (Adobe CS3, Final Cut Pro, etc). I couldn't understand this, so I tried again, this time unchecking the users, and just making sure the applications (which showed as 15.9GB) were selected. Set it running and watched as it showed 'transferring files to support applications' the whole time (about 30 minutes), at no time did it show the applications being transferred at all. As the blue bar neared completion, with 2 mm of white still showing, that's where it sat. I could see after sometime that the external wasn't being read from again, and indeed no applications were transferred. What on earth do I have to do to make this work???

I wonder if the dual-PowerPC/Intel compatibility nature of Leopard presents the same problem for the migration assistant that migrating from a PowerPC to Intel Mac presents? Regardless, since you ran into this issue, I suggest copying over in smaller chunks, and make sure you follow the license agreement of the said applications. This user tip explains how to copy in lieu of the Migration Assistant:

I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my newer imac to an older macbook (10.5.8).  I keep getting an error message "application quit unexpectedly" as I'm waiting to select the items to migrate.  I've tried using a firewire cable as well as just a network connection.
    Thank you.

    Here is some information:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
It mentions that migration is not supported with 10.4; now you said you have 10.5 - it may be the same problem. Besides, migration assistant will recognize an older system and move apps etc. over to a newer system - I'm not sure it will do the same thing in reverse.
And, there are a couple more problems: one is that your newer versions may not be backwards compatible with the old 10.5 and the second is that is you are trying to copy apps so you can use them on both, it most likely violates the SLA (unless you purchased them on MAS).
So, if none of those two apply, I'd simply try target disk mode (without the assistant) and drag over the apps.

  • Migration Assistant - Selecting which applications to transfer

    Hi,
I have upgraded to snow leopard and want to use migration assistant to transfer some of the files and apps of my old installation. As far as i can see, there is not much room to maneuver around which applications and files will be transfered. Is there a way to manually which applications and files will be transfered?
One more question, if I select machine under the settings subcategory, what will be transfered?
    Thanking you in advance,

you can only transfer all applications or none at all. MA does not let you pick and choose which apps to transfer. it does let you choose which data folders to transfer to some degree. you can click on the triangle next to your account name and select which default folders from your account to move.
One more question, if I select machine under the settings subcategory, what will be transfered?
machine? where do you see that?
found it. I'm not sure exactly what that is. the total size is very small so this is most likely some general computer settings like the computer name.

  • I used Migration Assistant to transfer from MBP to Mac Mini. Documents cannot be "seen" or "found". Stumped!

I used Migration Assistant to transfer from MBP (Leopard OSX 10.6.8) to Mac Mini (Lion OSX 10.7). Documents cannot be "seen" or "found". Ditto Music , movies, and pictures.Stumped!

System Preferences/Users & Groups shows you the various user accounts you have.
Look at your hard drive in the Finder sidebar. You should see Applications, Library, System, and Users. If you look in Users you will see a Shared folder. From the user Migration Assistant created, find the iTunes folder and drag it to Shared. Log out and log in using your normal user account, go to the same place and copy it to Music in your normal user account. Another option is to leave it in shared so any user can access it. You will have to tell iTunes where to find the music by going to iTunes/Preferences/Advanced.

  • Migration assistant app transfer serial numbers

does migration assistant not transfer serial numbers when moving applications from one computer to another?

Application serial Numbers?  Yes it should transfer what you need to keep going.
You don't give much information, from what computer OS to what computer OS?
Old PPC apps will not work past Lion since there is not Rosetta ???

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the page that opens.
Select the System keychain in the list of keychains in the sidebar of the window. If you don't see the list, click the down-arrow icon below the sidebar.
Then select Passwords in the Category list at lower left. Click the Kind heading in the list of keychain items to arrange it by Kind.
Locate the AirPort Disk Password with the name of your Time Capsule. Double-click the item and check the box marked Show Password in the inspector window that opens. You'll be prompted for the administrator login password. Make a note of the AirPort password, then close the inspector window and delete the item.
Also delete any other AirPort DIsk Password items for that same Time Capsule, which may have had a different name in the past.
Quit Keychain Access and try again to back up.

  • HT4889 Migration Assistant to transfer apps?

If I use Migration Assistant to transfer my files from an old to a new computer, what happens to the bundled software on the new computer? I'm worried that the new software, which came with the new computer, will get written over by the software from my old computer if I transfer the apps. Should I not transfer my apps? But if I don't transfer apps, what about my non-bundled software? How do I get that to the new computer (e.g., Word for the Mac)?

    itsmedsm wrote:

No.  It will not transfer any apps that already exist (identical name in identical place).  So the new versions will remain.
See the pink Transferring Applications box in Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion.

  • Migration Assistant and Transfering Applications

    Hey,
I'm super busy this week so I'm being incredibly lazy and posting a discussion since I do not have time to search the discussion page so i'm sorry if i'm being redundant or posting an easily answered question.
I am considering upgrading from a 2 year old MacBook to a MacBookPro and plan on using the Migration Assistant to transfer files, applications, etc. My question is after going through the Migration Assistant process do you have to re-enter serial numbers for your applications such as an Adobe Creative Suite or a Final Cut suite. My situation is I have to move every six months and I cannot recall where the serial number is and it would save me loads of stress if I did not have to go find the CD/Serial.
    Thanks for any advice.

No, Migration Assistant should transfer that information so you don't have to reenter it. However, you should find those serial numbers anyway. you'll need them in case of problems with the transfer or if you have to reinstall the apps for whatever reason.

  • Problems using OS10.9.2 with migration assistant to transfer files from imac with OS10.6.8

Having problems using the Migration assistant on a new imac with OS10.9.2 to transfer files from an old imac with OS 10.6.8.

The Migration Assistant can transfer files from a computer running Mac OS X 10.1 or newer, but shouldn't be used to migrate applications from a PowerPC Mac to an Intel Mac.

  • I used the migration assistant to transfer files from my PC to my Mac but it recreated my user profile from the PC and I wanted to transfer the files to the new different user profile I've setup on the Mac. How can I transfer everything now?

I have an older Windows laptop and I am switching to a new MacBook Air. The main user on the Windows laptop is going to be different than the main user on the MacBook. I used the migration assistant to transfer data to the MacBook but it recreated the whole older profile on the new Mac when I just wanted to pull everything over into the new user profile I had already created on the new MacBook. How can I go about putting the data over into the new user profile and erasing the older other user profile it recreated? Would I erase the old user profile on the new Mac and start over with the migration assistant using some setting I missed that lets me pull the data over to the new main user on the MacBook? Or is there a way to rename the old user profile on the Mac to match what I want the new username/password to be somehow?
Or would it be best to back the data I really need from the old PC onto an external HD and then copy it over to the new Mac from the external HD?
Looking for advice on how to best go about this. On the old PC I had multiple profiles and it was awkward. On the new Mac I just want a single profile for the primary user and both users will just share the same user profile. I wasn't sure if the Migration Assistant only let you recreate entire profiles or if there was a way to just import data from the old PC's primary profile into the new Mac's new primary profile with some setting adjustment.
Data would be docs, pics, bookmarks, music. Fairly basic.
Thanks for any and all advice,
    -Crosscourier.

Just connect the drive to your Mac. The Mac can read most Windows formats (it cannot WRITE Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) formatted drives.

  • Does Time Machine/Migration Assistant successfully transfer software licenses for Microsoft Office and Adobe?

I have a MacBook that I purchased in late 2007.  It's been very good to me over the years.  However, I'm been having various minor issues, and tonight I noticed that the screen goes to black at about 45° as I'm closing my laptop.  In other situations I'd try to fix this myself, but right now I'm a Peace Corps Volunteer in rural South America and have limited access to the right tools, much less replacement parts.  So instead I'm taking it as a sign that my trustworthy companion is about to give up the ghost and I should get a new computer now, instead of completely running this one into the ground and potentially losing important documents, photos, &c.
My question is simple:  Does Time Machine and/or Migration Assistant successfully transfer licenses for Microsoft Office 2011 and for Adobe software?
My software installation disks are in a box in a basement in the United States.  And since I'm not quite sure which box it is (last summer I did not see the need to label my own boxes), I'm not going to ask some unsuspecting friend or family member to dig through all my posessions to find an alphanumeric code or two, especially if I can just transfer/migrate the license without it.
    Many thanks.

Try the combo update on the old machine.

  • Can't update migration assistant to transfer data to new mac

Just bought a new MacBook Pro and want to use Migration Assistant to transfer data from my Macbook OS X 10.4.11       The new MacBook Pro says i need to update Migration Assistant on the source computer, but when i run software update on the source computer it says there is nothing that needs updating.  Any ideas on how to get this done?

Right, there is no update for 10.4.11, only 110.5.8 & up.
If the old MacBook has Firewire you can put it in FireWire target disk mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
So you only need MA on the newer one.
If no FW on the old one you'll need to clobe the old one to an externak drive tahat can be moved to the new one.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...
