Migration Assistant Wrong Password problem

Hi,
I cannot login after using Migration Assistant to move user account from iMac to MacBook Pro. I reinstalled system with erasing all previous data. So now I have one administrator account (the one I moved from another computer) password which works on previous computer doesn't work at laptop at all. I reinstalled system again (without erasing the disc). Password didn't worked again. Now after putting Install Disc and pressing "C" during restart laptop ejects the dvd...
Are there any other options ??? :-/
I've just read that different versions of system (both Leopard) may cause this problem but how to reinstall system now?
I've read that migrating from newer version might be a problem...

instead of using c, try holding down option. you want to hold down option right after the computer chimes. Keep holding option till it gives you choices like "Macintosh HD" and "Install DVD"
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1274 explains how to use the system disk to restart the password. try clicking on "Resetting the original administrator account password." (assuming you can get the cd to work)
if you reset the admin password, and you can't login
try resetting the root password. reboot to the disk, choosing login as other user. user name "root", and what ever password you set root to.

  • I have Migration Assistant/Adobe Installer problems

I have just used the Migration Assistant to move to a new Mac, and all the Adobe suite has transferred over, but the Adobe Installer and the Mac is asking me to reinstall the Installer.  When I do this, the installation process begins, but then tells me it needs the Installer in place.  Chicken/Egg/Egg/Chicken.  What do I do now?

You may need to UN-install, run the cleaner, and RE-install

  • Migration Assistant vs Mavericks = Problems?

    Hello all,
I am trying to use Migration Assistant to transfer everything from my old Mac book to my new iMac 27".
    Both have Mavericks installed.
Both have system preferences set to "never sleep".
But each time I attempt migration one or both computers go to sleep within seconds, and migration fails!
    Any advice?

I had migration problems transferring data from old Mac Book Pro running Mavericks (10.9) to new MBP Running Mavericks (10.9).
The only solution that worked for me and have everything run correctly was to migrate from my Time Machine Time Capsule.
Here is what I did To Fix Migrate Problems From Old Mac To New Mac -
But Email Did Not Run Correctly after migration:
    A. Process To Correct Migration Problems from old Mac Book to New Mac Book:
Set up computer and after it is set up then do steps 1 - 5:
    1. Set Apple Preferences > Energy Saver > Put Computer to Sleep Never, Do Not Put Hard Drive To Sleep.
    2. Use Disk Utility to verify and correct  the source:  Disk and Disk Permissions
    3. Reset Pram: Restart Computer and Immediately hold down the Command, Option, P, R Keys simultaneously until computer chimes ring twice
        http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
    4. Reset SCM (System Management Control): Shut down computer, then: Simultaneously hold down Shift, Control, Option, Power Button - for MacBooks Late 2009 and later
        http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    5. Run Migration Assistant (in Utilities Folder which is inside the Applications folder)
    B. Email Problems After Migration - GRRR!
After Migration I had Email Problems with my email Sub Folders not being visible, all emails not viewable and could not access my iCloud Email Account.
I tried re-indexing mail by removing Envelop files from the Mail Data folder (path: Go menu, hold down option key, Library > Mail > V2 folder > Mail Data folder > 3 Envelope files (move to desk top).
    Nothing worked.
    C. Solution: I migrated data from Time Machine Time Capsule to my new Mac Book Pro.  All worked correctly - Rejoice!
To Migrate from Time Capsule to new Mac:
Get an Ethernet to Lightning Adapter to connect Time Capsule to New Mac
You can use the Ethernet to USB adapter but Lightning adapter has much faster throughput.
    1. Back up your old Mac using Time Machine
    2. Connect your new computer to Time Capsule with ethernet to Lightning or USB adapter
    3. Verify the Sparsebundle (backup data file) on Time Capsule using Disk Utilitiy
    Path to Sparsebundle:
    A. Using the Mac connect to Time Capsule go to Finder > Go Menu > Network > select Time Capsule, log into Time Capsule > select User > you will see Sparsebundle file
    B. Run Disk Utility to Verify / Fix  data
Time to back up data from New Computer to Time Capsule.
I am now running a new backup from new computer to Time Capsule via Ethernet to USB connector (would recommed using Ethernet to Lightning connection).
Backing up 126 GB.  So far it has taken 6 hours to back up 7.8 GB.  Estimated time to complete is 4 days.
Very slow.  When I get my ethernet to Lightning adapter I  will replace the USB wth Lightning adapter and would expect a much faster through put - UB2 maxes out at 42 MB per sec and Lightning is at least 5 times faster.

  • Migration assistant (from WIN) problem with emails:

    Hi there
I am a new user dealing with my first mackbook pro.
For first I have used the migration assistant to trasnfer data from my old win7 pc. For time reason, i have used it in two-three different times. Theproblem now is that when I've tried to transfer my email boxes, the software recognizes the user in win and wants to create an other user in mac.
This way, I have a second user with all theworking boxes.
Obviously, I would like to have only one user with all the boxes.
    How can I do?
I even tried to transfer the boxes from one user to the other, using the "export" command in Mail.
My the way, when importing in the right user i get an error message:
"Impossible to import some messages" if i try to use the "Apple Mail" option
    or
"mbox elements not found" if I use the mbox element options
    thanks
p.s. sorry for my english, I'm italian!

  • Migrate assistance / Mail application Problems

    Hello,
I bought a new Macbook Pro Lion, after I powered the mac, went to utilities app to use migrate assistant app to install my time capsule back up.
Because I used the same name of the home folder whenI first booted the mac, it asked me to open a new user (standard user) in order to transfer from the time capsule back up to replace the admin user.
I did so, everything went fine, until I opened my first admin user and apparently the name has changed, and now in the users folder I can see 2 home folders one xyz and the other xyz1, so it is kind of confusing. the xyz has most of the folders but empty, as the xyz1 has everything but the application folder emply.
I opened most of my applications to check if the info were transfered successfully, from iphoto to itunes, etc.. mostly everything apparently was fine, but not MAIL, I open the mail, it took most the accounts but it does not show the main window for mail, and if it is open it does not allow me to quit the app, so I had to forcequit couple of time, and still when ever I try to open it, it doesn't work.
Now I m thinking about restoring my Macbook Pro to the factory setting, and start fresh, but I don't know from where and how to do that, can you please help me.
    Thanks

Setup Assistant is usually recommended instead of Migration Assistant:

  • Migration assistant-old password doesn't work

My old Mac Mini (running Leopard) died and I just got a new one. I had an extern disk that was used as the boot drive for the old mini, so I attached it to the new one and turned on the new mini. I was lead through the screens and got to the one regarding migrating user folders, systems files, etc from an attached volume to the new mini; it displayed the correct volume and listed all the file/folder choices including the users (me and my wife). Everything seems to have gone well, except when it finished migrating and presented the login screen, I choose my former admin account (me) but kept getting an error - the the password was wrong. After several tries, it presented a password hint, which is correct.
I then tried logging into my wife's account (she a regular user) and did get in. Naturally, I couldn't change any user info for my account, like issuing a new password.
So now what? I even tried logging in as root using the old root password, no go - I suspect that needs to be activated, but can't do that with my wife's account. Any ideas??
    Thanks.

Oh.... I just went to preferences>accounts again (using my wife's account) and for login options, the screen correctly shows the former settings; auto login with my account, etc. But when I reboot, it doesn't auto login, just presents the list of users. So I think the bottom line is that the password got corrupted during migration.
On my MacBook Pro, I had a way to connect to the mini via finder, and the login was automatic since the password was in the keychain. But again, trying to log in remotely gets me nowhere.

  • Migration assistant - start up problem on Macbook pro

I've just used migrate assitant to put programs onto a new laptop running Lion from my macbookpro running Snow leopard.  Now on start up my old macbookpro  just hangs (with the wheel of death!) showing my desk top background but nothing else?  I"ve tried safe start but it only gets to the same position.  Can anyone help?

The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime.

  • Migration Assistant problem? : New iMac's iTunes doesn't see the catalog or playlist of my old Mac's songs on an external drive

    So I just migrated from a 10.7.5 iMac 27" from 2009 to 10.9.4 on a 2013 27" iMac with Fusion Drive.
I don't use Time Machine. There are no backups involved here.
Used Ethernet. Only took 20 hours... (BTW, it stayed on "less than 1 minute left" for like 12 hours but luckily I was away and just left it going in hopes it would work... and it did!)
Anyway, back on my OLD iMac, I kept all of my songs on an external drive because my internal drive was too small. So iTunes looked at that drive for the music it was playing. I turned that drive off, even disconnected it, during the migration process because I thought it was confusing it during the first attempt which took 10 hours and nothing happened.
So now it worked, finally. On my new iMac, running Mavericks, I now have two user accounts... the one that was set up when I started the computer the first time, and the new one that transferred over via Migration Assistant. No problem. I can live with that. The only thing is, I would still think the old XML files and library stuff would migrate over... but iTunes doesn't see it. When I open up iTunes, in *either* account, iTunes behaves as if it's brand new. Repeat: the old and new account on the new iMac, both, do not see an old iTunes library which IS on the old iMac. Only the music is on the external drive from what I understand.
I've done this before so I know it's possible. I remember upgrading a long time ago and got iTunes to see my old library... even though some of the music was no longer there. It just puts "!" marks wherever there is no link. I was hoping that that's what I would find when I launched iTunes, but no luck. Even connecting the old hard drive to the new Mac (via USB) doesn't make iTunes all of a sudden "see" the old library. That data doesn't seem to be there. It didn't transfer over. Did it not transfer over because the songs weren't on the internal volume? Should I have left my external hard drive on?
So.... now that I've spent almost 3 days total trying to get this to work, and everything is running... I don't want to have to start over in order to get iTunes to work.  Is there a way I can just drag over some XML files or something from the old computer? I don't want to lose all of the ratings and personal notes and everything.
I should add also that I have like only four songs I've ever actually bought through iTunes. I'm still a bit old fashioned and buy CDs and rip them to Apple Lossless. So I hope it's not an authorization / reauthorization issue because I have like 1400 albums ripped.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    --Jeff

iTunes does not use the .xml it uses the .itl
If you are sure your old library file migrated across (does the file size and modification dates suggest it has?) start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and guide it to the .itl file to get it to use that one.

  • Transferring files, apps using Migration Assistant

I bought a new Intel based iMac and instead of using the set up assistant to help me transfer my files from my old Mac (1.5 GHz Powerbook G4, OS X 10.4.11) to my new one I delayed the process and am now trying to do it using Migration Assistant. The problem is my 2 Macs aren't reading each other and yes I do have Migration Assistant up on both of them. I'm connecting firewire and that's not working and I tried networking them and that's not working. It just continues to say that it's searching for other computers. It's especially weird when I use the network feature because I have 2 other Macs that are also on the network and it's not reading them either. Is there any reason for this? Is it possible that it's not working because I'm using OS X 10.5.6 on my new iMac? Am I doing something wrong? I'm stumped to why it's doing this.

You can connect the two Macs together with an Ethernet cable directly and do the same thing, but there is nothing else on the "network" to confuse them.
    From Mac Help in the Finder Help Menu;
*To connect two computers using Ethernet:*
    1. Connect a standard Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port on one computer to the Ethernet port on the other. You don’t need to use an Ethernet crossover cable.
    2. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences on both computers, and click Sharing. Note the computer name for the computers.
    3. In the Finder on one of the computers, choose Go > “Connect to Server,” and then click Browse.
    4. Double-click the other computer in the window and enter your password, if necessary.
Once you have established the sharing connection you should be able to use MA in Network mode.

  • Migration assistant + time machine error

    Hi,
I just bought a new iMac 24" and was trying to migrate my data over. Upon starting the iMac, I chose the option of restoring using "time machine" backup. Migration assistant found my backup and I chose that and after a "calculation space" screen it started transferring the data over but it never ends. At the end of the whole process, the "progress" screen (with the progress bar) and the statement saying "Less than 1 minute to completion" (or something to that extant), it just stays there. Nothing happens, it says it is "moving files to link applications". I've done this 3 times, and the last was with a clean install of Leopard using the restore disc. All of them gave the same problem, at first I thought it was a time calculation error but after leaving the 3rd installation alone for 3 hours and it was still stuck on that screen, I think the system hung.
    What is wrong?
The backup is on a partitioned 1TB firewire 800 HDD.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Desmond

The exact error message when I select the Time Machine backup (which is displayed with yellow triangle on the hard disk) is 'Volume contains an OS X installation which may be damaged.'
The older iMac has the system on the built-in SSD and the applications and files on the internal hard disk whereas the new iMac is a fusion drive. I wonder if this is what the problem is, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that someone in a similar situation was able to use the migration assistant without any problem (can't find it now, though).

  • Migration assistant won't work

    Hello,
Hopefully someone can tell me what I am doing wrong? I have a macbook 13" running os 10.5.8 and a macbook pro 13" running os 10.6.8
The hard disc on the macbook pro crashed so it was replaced and reinstalled. Now I wanted to use migration assistant to copy all my user data, photos, itunes library etc.... from the old macbook. I launch migration assistant on both laptops, get to the point where new laptop gives me a 6 digit code for the old laptop, enter the code, and then on both computers migration assistant just says "searching for other computers" and nothing else happens.....
I am sure this worked fine when I first got the macbook pro.... Or is there a significant difference between transfering data using the setup assistant versus migration assistant?
Pretty please help cause I'm loosing the plot lol
    Eve-Line
PS for some reason the power cable on the macbook pro isn't connecting anymore so that's going back to the shop (lousy repair service yes). Does that influence migration assistant?

Ok problem solved itself.... still don't know why though. I upgraded to ox 10.7 (purchased before hard disk crash, so just reinstalled it) and now migration assistant works.... Thanks however for reading and trying to answer my question BDAqua

  • Trying to use Migration Assistant to restore from Time Machine backup but it keeps "Looking for other computers..."

    Hi!
I just bought a new MacBook Pro 15" and I wanted to transfer my old files from a previous Time Machine backup done with my old MacBook Pro 15".
Both computers have Mac OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion) installed.
I always used Migration Assistant without any problem to accomplish this task, but now I don't know why it's stuck on a screen displaying "Looking for other computers...". What? What computer? I'm trying to restore from a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive, so I don't understand what computer it is looking for.
Do you have any idea to solve the problem?
    Thanks!

  • Two crashed hard drives using Migration Assistant-Why?

We have had two hard drives crash and burn migrating data from non-intel based iMacs to intel based iMacs. This has happened exactly the same both times. The data transfers to the new computer and the non-intel hard drive is dead afterwards. We have replaced two hard drives by transferring data. Has anyone else had this happen? Why would this happen? I'm afraid to use migration again. Thank you.

It sounds odd to me, are you sure that the drives were healthy before your tried to migrate? I moved my data from my old G5 to my current intel using Migration Assistant without any problems at all.
Have you tried putting the "dead" drives in an enclosure and using something like DiskWarrior to repair them?

  • Migration assistant from PC password problems

I just used migration assistant to bring my data from my pc laptop to my new macbook air.  It brought it over, and deposited it under a new user id.  But I can't log in as that user because it says the password expired, and doesn't recognize the password I had on my pc (awful vista). When I try to change the password on system prefs, those usernames are greyed out and can't be changed.  Help!

Next time you have to transfer files from a pc to ur mac you should do what i did..
the BEST solution for me was going to this link

it was a MILLION times easier than Migrate Assistant PC-to-Mac

just FOLLOW the steps!! I transfered my Itunes library & pictures all in like 15 min with my ethernet cable!
