Migration assistant yet a little different
I keep backups (carbon copy cloner) of my Power PC G4 (10.3.9) on an external HD.
Just got a new iMac (10.5.5, 2.8 Ghz Intel Core2 Duo, 2 GB etc.) and was considering using Migration Assistant. My external HD is connected to new iMac via FW. Is this a reasonable method to use MA ?
Also can I bring over only let's say my AppleWorks folder in Applications, user account, and pictures folder and bring other things over later if wanted to needed ? I like this new, clean environment and would like to keep it that way. Sort of 'dejunking'.
Thanks
Patty Brown
Thank you both Niel & AxL ! You know I could drag this out (no pun intended) piece by piece but maybe it might be better to just use MA and move it all over and be done with it ! What do you think of 'MY PLAN':
Erase and install again with my two new CDs. During this process when asked about migrating,
turn on my external FW HD and point to latest backup of old iMac there and indicate to migrate all of it. Hopefully the questions I'm asked during this install will make sense to me !
If this doesn't work, my husband is just dying to get his hands on my new machine.
'HIS PLAN'
Using DU, take the latest backup of old iMac on external HD and restore on my new iMac
Use my 2 new install discs to install over old system
He claims to have used 'his plan' millions times successfully !
Please comment on 'my plan and 'his plan' or on anything else.
Thanks for your expertise, time, and patience !

Forms Migration Assistant Usage
Hi all,
I am not able to understand the clear usage of Forms Migration Assistant yet.
I have seen in Forums that Forms 6i applications can be migrated to 11g just by recompiling the forms and running it on 11g.
If this is the case , whats the clear usage of Forms Migration Assistant?
Is it meant to be used for some complex Forms built on 6i or 9i ?
When do we use migration assistant instead of just recompiling the forms and running it on 11g ?
Can anyone help me out ?
Thanks,
RamIt does some changes; for example when you have calls to run_product for reports this get's replaced by rp2rro.run_product, the rp2rro library is attached and the reports object is added to the form. You also get notified if you have calls to get_file_name in your form as this built in is deprecated.

I have an older Windows laptop and I am switching to a new MacBook Air. The main user on the Windows laptop is going to be different than the main user on the MacBook. I used the migration assistant to transfer data to the MacBook but it recreated the whole older profile on the new Mac when I just wanted to pull everything over into the new user profile I had already created on the new MacBook. How can I go about putting the data over into the new user profile and erasing the older other user profile it recreated? Would I erase the old user profile on the new Mac and start over with the migration assistant using some setting I missed that lets me pull the data over to the new main user on the MacBook? Or is there a way to rename the old user profile on the Mac to match what I want the new username/password to be somehow?
Or would it be best to back the data I really need from the old PC onto an external HD and then copy it over to the new Mac from the external HD?
Looking for advice on how to best go about this. On the old PC I had multiple profiles and it was awkward. On the new Mac I just want a single profile for the primary user and both users will just share the same user profile. I wasn't sure if the Migration Assistant only let you recreate entire profiles or if there was a way to just import data from the old PC's primary profile into the new Mac's new primary profile with some setting adjustment.
Data would be docs, pics, bookmarks, music. Fairly basic.
Thanks for any and all advice,

Merging different accounts with Migration Assistant
My account on my mac is "myname" but the time machine backup is under account name "myname_bkp". Can I migrate from myname_bkp on TM to myname on the mac directly? Or do I have to creat an account myname_bkp on the mac, then manually transfer to myname, then manually delete myname_bkp?
tmApparently, MA will let you migrate into a different account name only if it encounters the same account name on both ends. So here is how I finally did this:
Create account myname_bkp on the Mac where you want to migrate to.
Migration Assistant will notice that myname_bkp exists both on TM and on the Mac and will ask whether you want to migrate into the existing account or create a new one. If you chose new account, MA will let you create a new used myname and will copy myname_bkpinto myname.
After the migration is done, delete myname_bkp from the Mac.

TimeMachine / Migration Assistant and a different UID, but same username
Hello there,
I am going to do a clean reinstall of my Macs with Mountain Lion (no need to discuss clean install vs. upgrade, please). During this shift the goal is to transfer all accounts into Open Directory. While keeping the account names, the UIDs will be different.
Doing a clean install, I can see no use in restoring all stuff in a users profile, for some is old, useless and maybe the related application is long gone. But there are a couple of items worth to be saved, for sure: emails, contacts, calendar, favorites, iTunes library, the users documents and very important: purchased Items from iTunes or App Store and the keychain of cause. Users agreed, that they can rebuild settings of other applications, not listed before.
Will the Migration Assistant the right path to go? Can I use a TimeMachine Backup and restore it for a user with the same name, but a different UID using the Migration Assistant? Will there be any pitfall for purchased items or the keychain?
Thanx for your help

No. Migration Assistant restores user accounts and data (although you can omit some broad categories). It won't "merge" data into an existing home folder.
When it does that, it will preserve the UID on the backups if it can; if the same UID already exists, it will use a different one.
If a user account of the same name already exists, it will require you to rename one of them, or skip it.
Note that, if you use it when OSX first starts up on a new Mac, or after installation on an empty volume, it's called Setup Assistant. The windows are a bit different, but the only significant difference is, since there aren't any user accounts already, it can preserve all UIDs and user names from the backups.

I'm trying to migrate my music and pictures over to my new iMac. When I use the migration assistant it connects to my PC fine but it won't let me use the account name and username that I have created as the admin. It requires me to create a new user account - so then I have two separate accounts to log in to which i don't want. How do I get it to let me use the current account that I have to move my files to?
Thanks!Migration Assistant creates a new account and migrates all the information you have requested to that new account. There is no way around that. However once migrated you can move the data to the account you want to. Here are some instructions for doing so:
Transferring files from one User Account to another. -
i used migration assistant to transfer my info from my PC to my new iMac, but it created an entirely new account on the Mac with all my info. i can get email on the new iMac, but everything else is on the separate login (which i cannot access email on due to a missing password.). how do i transfer everything into the new iMac account?
Migration Assistant worked the way it was supposed to by creating a second account. When you turned on the Mac for the first time it started Setup Assistant, that was the best opportunity to migrate your data from the PC to the iMac and only have one user account. You can start over (recommended) or begin moving data from the new user account to the initial account that was setup when the machine was turned on. Please look over Pondini's instructions for transferring files from one account to another in:
http://pondini.org/OSX/Transfer.html
However I'd recommend starting over, Pondini discussed that somewhat in Lion Setup Assistant tips. -
First time Mac User. Just got my MacBook Pro 2 days ago. Uppon setup, I founf that Migration Assistant would take more than 40 hours to transfer my data from my PC. Thinking that I was taking a smart approach, I decided to break the transfer into smaller parts performing them when the PC was not needed. What I've ended up doing was migrating my data into 3 diferent user's on the Mac. So now I have an extensive iTunes library and contacts under one user, all of "my documents" under another user, and all of my pictures under a 3rd user. Anyone know how to get all my data over to one user and then get rid of the other user names?
Erase the drive, reinstall Mountain Lion, migrate using Setup Assistant.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
To restore wait until the installation is completed and the computer restarts. You should restart to the Setup Assistant where you'll be given an opportunity to restore directly from your Time Machine backup. Be patient since the restore will take so long. If your backup drive can run on FireWire instead of USB then use FireWire instead. It will cut that time down substantially. -
Migration Assistant stalls every time, even with different backups
I recently had the hard drive replaced on my 2009 intel iMac. I have tried using Migration Assistant to transfer user settings and applications from both the USB backup drive of the iMac as well as my Macbook Pro but in both cases, Migration Assistant stalls at either 1hr 47min ot 1hr 53min and doesn't progress past that point. I've let it continue for hours but it just doens't go any further than that.
I assumed it was coming to a corrupt file but now I'm not so sure as it does the same thing when I try migrating from my Macbook Pro, which is a completely differn't system.
Any suggestions? Next, I'm going to try just transferring applications to see if I have any luck with that.
Any way to transfer applications manually? I have so many, it would take days to re-download and install everything. It may have completed the migration. Have you logged out and then looked for a new user account to see if your migration was completed?

Lost list of my wifi networks after using migration assistant / time machine
After using migration assistant / time machine to set up my new Mac I now miss the list of stored preferred Wlan/WiFi networks. So the passwords of wireless networks I. Used in the past are all gone.
Why is time machine not putting those on my new Mac as it does with many other settings?
How can I manually grab this list from my old Mac and out it on the new machine?
Will I find that time machine missed some other lists and settings as well?
Thanks for help.I've been working through this procedure this week. It's pretty good, and when it works it appears to work quite well, but there's still some bumps in the road:
(1) Once you've migrated, Time Machine itself seems to be a little confused and future backups may fail. You might have to start again by changing to a new Time Machine disk on your new laptop. You may lose your older backups, it's not yet clear to me.
(2) You can't restore from a previous backup during the migration, only the most recent one. (You can restore from an older backup using tools on the install CD if you need to.) I suspect this won't be an issue for you.
(3) Migration Assistant once you've logged in a Migration Assistant while you're starting up a new machine seem to work slightly differently. For example, sometimes the newest copy of the applications in your Applications folder (say, iMovie) is preserved, sometimes it makes an exact restore of the old Applications folder even if it's an older version of the application.
Overall it's been a pretty good experience, and what you want to do does work, but be prepared for the possibility of some issues. I tried this back in 10.5.0 a few months ago and had a lot of problems, things seem better now under 10.5.2.

How to access Time Machine backups after using migration assistant?
Can someone please help me with a TM issue.
My HD died so I fitted a new one. I figured that I would do a clean install rather than use TM to bring across a whole bunch of 5 year old junk and Aps that all broke after the Leopard -Snow Leopard -Lion -Mountain Lion upgrades.
Installed 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, no issues. Then used TM to drag and drop all the Applications I actually wanted, still good. Then used Migration assistant to bring in the remainder of the settings, documents, mail etc. For some reason you cannot migrate to the current default user so you have to create a new user profile which I did. New profile was great so I deleted the other profile created at install that was pretty much blank.
At this stage everything looks awesome but I noticed a video clip was missing in a Final Cut project so I went back into TM to retrieve it. Now, all the documents in my old user profile in TM have a little no entry symbol on them and I do not have permission to look at those files.
It looks as though I am now being treated as someone else on a different machine and no doubt TM will continue to work from this point on but how do I tell it that there is just one user on this machine and I want access to all the historic backups too?
Any advice will be gratefully received. Many thanks for your response Mende,
I am trying to specifically NOT do a full TM restore because I have some issues with some programs that I cannot delete. I wanted a fresh start but from what I understand the TM will bring back everything as it was, including all the corrupt system files. Fixing the TM permissions would be the preferable option.
(I attempted to make a windows partition on my system once, thinking it would make some sort of clever fake-windows desktop supported by Mac coding. It actually wanted me to do a full windows 7 install on the partition with windows install disks so I cancelled the process. Because it was a partial install I have not been able to uninstall the modifications and my system was crashing regularly due to some sort of stray code).
Just out of interest, if your OSX install is perfectly good, will TM use that or will it still take your OSX from the TM backup?
Apart from that one stray file, my system is now super clean and faster than ever... but maybe there are still some things missing that I haven't noticed yet. -
Migration from iMac to Macbook Pro using Migration Assistant / Time Machine
Dear all:
I have an iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo, with the latest Leopard version running. I have made a complete backup of my data on an external hard drive using Time Machine (only approx. 90 GB). I will be in New York next week and would like to buy a Macbook Pro. On the Apple website I found the following information regarding Time Machine:
"Migration with style.
To make setting up a new Mac even simpler, Time Machine shares its data with other Mac utilities. Use Migration Assistant to copy portions of any Time Machine backup to a new Mac, or select “Restore System from Time Machine” in the Leopard DVD Utilities menu. Choose any date recorded in Time Machine to set up your new Mac exactly as your previous Mac was on that date."
Is it really so easy? I only have to make a Time Machine backup of my iMac to the external HD, buy a Macbook Pro, plugin the external HD the Macbook Pro, start the Migration Assistant, choose the latest Time Machine backup from the external HD and set up the new Macbook Pro with all settings and applications? Really? If yes, that would be awesome!
Has anyone of you guys done this procedure in the past?
Suggestions and comments are welcome!
