Migration Asssitant w/Disk Image - Fails with a network error?

I'm currently trying to restore an iMac G4 with a disk image that was made before its hard drive was replaced. I've mounted the drive and it successfully copies over the user folders, but when it comes to copying the Library and Applications folders it fails after a long pause with the error indicating "There might be a problem with your network". As a disk image mounted on the desktop, I don't see this being a terribly helpful error, so I checked the console, but I don't see any errors being thrown there. Is there something that I can adjust so that it doesn't "lose contact" with the disk image?

Sorry, I guess I made some poor word choices there. I'm not technically restoring the iMac from an image in the ASR sense. The iMac is already set up with a brand new hard drive and OS install (the old drive was failing and was recovered using Disk Warrior and then imaged before it totally failed). All I'm trying to accomplish now is migrate the user data, apps, and library stuff over to the new drive from the image of the old drive.
The image now lives on the desktop of the new drive. There's no MBP involved (that's my computer and doesn't factor in to this issue). There's no network involved either (hence my confusion with the error message). This is all taking place on just the iMac, nothing more.
So I mount the image on the desktop. I fire up Migration Assistant, do the admin login, select "From a Time Machine backup or other disk", select the volume mounted from the image, in this case I turn off migration of the user folders as that has already completed successfully, Then turn on all the rest (Apps, Files & Folders, Library, Network Settings, etc.) Once it hit transfer it will sit and wait for a long period of time, then produces the error "There might be a problem with your network", but as there is no network involved here, that error only suggests to me that it's having trouble reading from the image.
However, referring to the console, there are apparently no errors reading the image (I've verified the image twice and even rebuilt it as a writable image in case it wanted to write the migration cash to the source volume), in fact I can see it cataloging all of the files that it wants to transfer. If I try to manually drag and drop any of the stuff in the Applications folder on the image of the old drive, it copies without a hitch.
For some reason, it just appears to lose the ablility to communicate with the image even though there are no apparent problems with it.
Any suggestions?

Starting to create an image and saving it into an external hard drive (MacOS extended Journaled).
It starts after less than 60 secs it comes out with an error : Failed to create the image (input/output error)

If you don't mind I'd like to discourage you from backing up a drive onto a disc image file no matter where you plan to save it. Disc image files can be very problematical when it comes to trying to restore the backup. Furthermore, you cannot boot from a disc image. If the disc image file becomes corrupted then you have no backup.
I would like to propose that you think about a better way to backup your drive. You can clone the drive to your backup drive. It's easy to do using Disk Utility's Restore feature. A clone backup is not only bootable but you have direct access to all the files on the backup.
In order to make a bootable clone open Disk Utility. Select Disk Utility Help from the Help menu. Search for +duplicating a disk+. Click on "Duplicating a disk" at the top of the list of articles. Follow the directions.

  • Disk images failed to mount - codec overrun

    Hi,
So after searching through the related posts I have been unable to correct my probelm, which is:
I am unable to open some .dmg files. I have tried to open three different .dmg files from a variety of sources and they all return the same error:
disk images failed to mount - codec overrun
However, I was able to update my system to 10.4.7 using the updater. This did not solve the problem. I then tried load the combo version of 10.4.7 as suggested in a different post and while it didn't load (I accidentally grabbed the powerPC version) it was able to open the .dmg and look in them.
Disk Utility is unable to attach the three that won't open. The first two Disk Utility was unable to verify or repair. The last (a cars game demo) was successfully verified but still came up with the codec overrun error when I tried to attach it. Finally I have tried removing the following two files and then restarting, to no effect.
    /System/Library/Extension.kextcache
    /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches/
I'd appreciate any help offered. A search on codec overrun was of no use. I searched for "mount failed disk images" and variations of that to find what I have already tried.
    Thanks
    Pete

I am havin the same problems. codec overrun
I am trying to download stuffit from their site so I can open a program for school.
I tried to download the dmg file from the apple site but was given the same error. Codec overrun
Also I attempted to get the updates from the Apple site.......same error.
So far this computer will not download much of anything without some kind of an error. Essentially this Imac is a $2000 jukebox. It does play music wonderfully.
My roommate was able to downlad easily from the same internet connection with no problem the windows version of the program from te same site.
This is a brand new out of the box iMac. 20" 1 gig 250 GB machine. First Mac for me and it is turning into a real headache.
Any help with the codec overrun would be appreciated.

  • "Disk Images Fail to Mount/ OS X 10.4.10/Security Update 2007-006?"

Whilst downloading the most recent Mac OSX Update, 10.4.10 to a PPC G3, 600 MHz, with 1 GB SDRAM, I received an un-explained error message. Since then, my USB Web Cam doesn't function, some applications don't load, and I consistently get a Warning Message that disk images fail to mount as device not configured. Moreover, I got the distinct impression the aforementioned issues were related to the problem of installing Security Update 2007-006 which was roughly released at the same time.
How can I proceed to get matters back to normal? Would deeply appreciate advice from Apple Forum/Technical Support person(s) in all convenient speed. SOS!
    Yours sincerely,
    Joseph.
Power PC G3   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   How do I uninstall the 10.4.10 update?

The problem took a somewhat bizarre twist when I got a phone call just after double clicking on a disk image file set to open with DiskImageMounter. When I came back from the phone call (about 2 minutes), the disk image was mounted, the MacBook wasn't frozen, and everything worked. With repeated testing, it now appears that both DiskImageMounter and Disk Utility hang for 65-75 seconds after starting the process of mounting a disk image and then complete the task successfully. Deleting the two cache files eliminates the hang (spinning beach ball), but only for a short while.

  • Disk image failed to mount.

    Hi,
While updating the latest Intel update for a Macbook Core duo 1.83, the progress bar got stuck near the end and so I did 'force quit'. Ever since then I am unable to open .dmg files. I get this message " The following disk images failed to mount". " 'application name' broken pipe".
What can I do to fix this problem?

It's hard to say if your disk image problem is related to the force quit install. There are disk image problems with 10.4.9 that you can encounter even if the install was successful. I am running into them and so are some users reporting on MacFixit.com (scroll down to Disk Images Not Mounting).

  • External Drive Disk Erase Failed with the Error Input/Output Error

I have 2 hard drives in an external FW800 enclosure that I am unable to format. When I go to initialize the drives in Disk Utility, I get the following error message: "Disk Erase failed with the error: Input/output error."
The drives show up in Disk Utility, but I can't repair them (that option is grayed out). Disk Utility correctly ID's the manufacturer of the drives (Maxtor), their size (200gb each), so it's obviously seeing that the drives are there. But it won't let me format them.
The drives are new, by the way; they don't have any data/files on them. I have Disk Warrior, but the drives don't show up there to be repaired -- probably because they aren't formatted yet.
After looking at other posts, I tried switching the jumper settings around on the drives -- from Master/Slave to cable select and back again, but it didn't help. I also tried doing a zero erase (even though the drives are new), zapping the PRAM -- again, no help.
One question I had is whether this could be a bad FW800 cable? The cable is new -- it came with the enclosure, which is an OWC Dual FW 800 enclosure. Other than that, does anyone have any other thoughts about what's causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    SOLUTION!!!!
I had the exact same problem. I have the original 20 GB hard drive that came in my Powerbook G4 550MHz and a couple of years ago I traded up for a 60 GB drive and bought a FW/USB enclosure for my original drive to use it to backup my important files. I hadn't backed up in over a year (shame on me!) and I decided maybe I should erase the drive and start from scratch. It was connected via USB.
At that point DiskUtility gave me the exact same Input/Output error. I tried partitioning the drive into 1 or more partitions but came up with the same error. I couldn't figure out what was wrong so I decided to startup in OS 9.2.2, I did that and let it start up, then plugged in the hard drive and it gave me the standard "This disk is unrecognizable, do you want to eject or erase?" so I clicked Initalize. It worked!
Just make sure you choose the MacOS Extended option when initializing out of OS 9 (instead of the MacOS Standard option) so it can be read and viewed in OS X.
If your computer is too new to be able to boot from an OS 9 folder on your drive or an OS 9 CD, then see if a friend or a local library has older computers that are running OS 9 or can boot from it. If not let me know and you can send me your drive and I'll reformat it.
Kind of crazy...I haven't used the OS 9 partition on my HD in YEARS...was even thinking about erasing it since I don't use any Classic applications anymore...good thing I didn't!

  • Is my HD Dead? Reformat Disk Utility Error: secure disk erase failed with the error could not open disk.

    Hi,
Fed up with seeing the spinning beach ball I decided to reformat my MacBook Pro...
After backing up everything on an external hard drive I put in the OSX install DVD, restarted the machine and held down 'C'.
I followed the install prcedure, clicking next a few times etc...
I then went into Utilities > Disk Utility. I chose 7-Pass to erase the Macintosh HD and set it off erasing.
I checked the process an hour in and message on screen read:
Secure disk erase failed with the error:
    could not open disk
The internal hard drive no longer exists in the disk utility so I cant retry erasing it.
The only thing that appears in disk utility is the OSX install DVD.
I can't even shut down the mac as everything under the apple tab is greyed out!
I'm guessing this means my hard drive is broken right?
If anyone has any other ideas of what to try I'd really appreciate that.
How do I turn the machine off?
If my hard drive is gone then should I consider getting an SSD drive?
Any recommendations for such a drive would be great.
    Hope you can help!

    Did you partition the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Imaging failed with error 175

We recently updated all of our servers with the new ZDM7NWSP1IR4HP1. We distributed the zenworks update through our zenworks for servers so we downloaded the CPK files. Updates were successful except now we have lost our reimage on next boot functionality on all servers. We get the message "imaging failed with error 175". We downloaded and tried the Zenworks Imaging Driver Update for October 2009. We tried this on one server in our environment that we use for testing purposes. This did not fix the problem.
Can anyone help us? We don't see anything additional on the support site to patch.

I will be glad to try this and send you the log. I too tried installing the service pack with winsetup.exe and found that also worked for me as far as making image on next boot work. We really want the CPK method to work as we have so many servers and we were able to update them all in one day versus weeks using winsetup.exe. I'll respond back with info you need as soon as possible.
