Migration asst speeds?

Waiting not so patiently for my new iMac to get here. When it does I plan on using the migration assistant to move everything over. I'm a little curious about what will be the best way. I have a time capsule directly connected with Ethernet, or a second time machine on a FireWire 800 drive, or just hook the two machines up with FireWire? I'm leaning towards the FireWire drive, just curious what everyone's thoughts were.

I'd use that last option, with the older machine booted into "target disk mode" by holding down the "T" key while booting.

    I cant download migration asst.
    what am I doing wrong

    Well,
I tried the "Internet Recovery" option and finally saw Mac OS X Mountain Lion's install page but after waiting 7 hours when I just thought its going to start installing, I got another progress bar with 36 hours remining time to download "Additional Components" then after progressing 2-3 hours, it shows "Unable to write installation something..., Contact Apple Care"
Then I accidently rebooted the machine and now it seems Internet Recovery don't work anymore, it shows "support.apple.com - 40 something!" error, and finally when I tried to reboot using Recovery HD, I found it's gone as-well!
To be honest, I don't know what to do now, I am and dissapointed... also I do not have any Apple Store nearby, there is an authorized country reseller almost 650/km far away from my residents and they even charges too high (like $250) for doing such repairs (as per phone conversation)
If anyone have any idea or anything to help me with, please do share- I'd be eternally grateful!

  • Unable to view files after using "Migration Asst".

I "migrated" my files from my old G4 to my new MacBookPro. Now I CANT VIEW my old files on my new Mac. I get a msg that says, "The folder “Pictures” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents." The files all have a red-sign. This applies to all the files I had transferred.
What I've done so far: I tried renaming my old G4 to match my new MacPro, but it did the same thing above. Migration Asst makes it sound so easy, (and basically it was) to transfer files, but it appears to me that a new "account name" is automatically set-up for the migration. I just want ONE ACCT, and to be able to read the files that have been transferred.
    What did I do wrong?
    THANKS!

  • I want to use migration asst to transfer stuff from our old Windows...what do I not want to transfer?

Iwant to use migration asst to transfer stuff from our old Windows PC to this new IMAC. What do I not want to transfder?

QuickBooks for Mac has been available again since at least 2004 (Intuit before that had done nothing with it for years). The current version is QB for Mac 2014. It's pretty much the same price no matter where you look.
The Mac version data is not directly compatible with the Windows version. Sending your data out to your business tax accountant and getting it back in is not at all easy. It's such a pain, our accountant comes here to finalize the books at year end.
There is still also a lot of Windows features for QB Pro which have never been added to the Mac version. They're all on the higher end side that larger businesses would need. I've never run into anything with the Mac version I couldn't do.
If your accountant wants ease of data transfer, then you'd be better off purchasing Snow Leopard Server and run that in Parallels. Then run the Windows version of QB in that.

  • Upgrade and plug ins migration ? speed changes and transitions to motion 3

I have the FCS2 upgrade on its way soon i hope..
will my natress plug ins and others migrate when i go from FCS1 to 2?
I am mid project - have done all my captures but havent got into the nitty gritty of the edit yet - you reckon its a bit risky to upgrade?
I am super keen to get the ability to easily do ramps (in Motion 3 or in FC 6) and 3d logo fly arounds. Looking fwd to being able to throw transitions and speed changes into Motion 3 - i hear that it can deal with that now - is this true?

    Thanks - thats all good

  • Does Migration Asst thwart a truly "clean" install?

I decided to do a clean install this time when 10.6 was released because one lookinside my preferences folder and libraries found a swarm of unknown, ancient or irrelevant support files. I want these gone. No amount of AppZapper will clear this stuff out if you've deleted these apps before the advent of AppZapper, etc.
I backed up my MBP's internal HD and erased then installed Snow Leopard. After realizing how much serial-number-entering I would have to do, I tried the migration assistant. What I didn't realize is that MA will pass on all the old Application Support/Preferences files you've always had whether they are relevant to your current applications or not. In short, the Migration ***'t install was a partial failure, with loads of permissions challenges (I found a KB on this, something to do with your user becoming a Standard instead of Admin user in the transfer), certain apps didn't copy and the system doesn't feel any cleaner than if I had simply Upgrade-installed. mail, iTunes and Address Book were all affected, though now fixed. This doesn't inspire confidence.
For a truly "clean" install, do I really have to go through the measures we did in OS 9 and earlier, meaning, literally download all your installers (or get your CDs handy), find support files that contain databases (Yojimbo, address book, etc), move them manually and all that? I'd thought we'd moved on from this.
Do any of those apps I've seen clean out things like old prefs and support files you're no longer using? I'm talking about OmniDiskSweeper or I believe Aladdin had one as well. I use Onyx for caches but not for all the other detritus.

Truly clean is a waste of time.
But the answer is yes, given it gives you the ability to install applications or your user home folder from an old installation. Your home folder contains preferences and data for nearly every application you run, which is incredibly helpful. Of course, if any of them are corrupt, and you don't know how to fix them, then Migration Assistant will bring them over.

  • Can't get two IMacs to connect with Migration Asst. Help please.

Trying to get my older and tired IMac connected to a newer one via Migration Assistant.  They don't see each other and they both are on my home network.  Help please

Mike is absolutely correct, use a direct connection such as an Ethernet cable. Even better is if you have a Time Machine backup of the older machine simply connect that to your new iMac and use Migration Assistant to restore from the backup.

  • Time machine backup not appearing in migration asst visible on time capsule

Due to a disk utility error I just completed a fresh install of 10.9.2 when I go to the migration assistant that mac doesn't appear as a source to restore all of my old files back again. However, when I manually open the time capsule I see the hard drive and can copy the user folder but that doesn't help with applications etc... Please advise how to make the time capsule restore my files?

Similar problem here under 10.5.8 (mac mini mid-2007 intel core 2 duo 2GHz, 4GB ram)
Only way to fix it is to restart the computer, it clears it for a while but it always come back within a couple of days or a week. It appears that in my case it does not happen every time time machine runs, but it happens quite frequently. The number of duplicate volumes is also random, most of the times I get 2 or 3 duplicates but I had up to 10 a couple of times. I assumed this might be due to 10.5 but the OP's case suggest it's a time machine problem independent of the OS version. Could it be related to the use of a time capsule? anyone with such problem using an extreme with an attached drive for TM backup?
It gets weirder once you consider that my wife iMac (latest i7) and kids MacBook pros (Dec 2009) (all under 10.6x) do not have the problem using the same time capsule. This would suggest it is caused by specific hardware combinations? (in my case time capsule with mac mini)

  • What's with the new user acct after using Migration Asst? Can I merge users or should I even care?

I used Migration Assistant to bring over photos and music from my PC and a new user account was created on my iMac. I expected this since the instructions on the Apple site mentioned this would happen. But now that it's all over and done it really annoys me to have 2 user accounts. Is it something I should just accept or should I merge the accounts (if that's even possible)?
I would be very appreciative of any feedback

Please look over http://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html towards the bottom where he discusses that. Once you have the data moved into the account you want you can remove the account you don't want by using the System Preferences - Users & Account. The remaining account must be an administrators account though.

  • Re-installed Mac OS X on I-Mac, will migration asst. return files etc. to new config.

My I-Mac desktop was currupted. Reinstalled operating disks. How should I use Migration Assistant to get Mac back with my Mail and I Photos etc. Now even Safari says it's Version 4.0.2. I'm stuck. Lester

Where is your files and stuff?
1: Get you machine connected online and use Software Update first.
2: Install your programs from fresh sources is always best.
3: Then if your user files are on a TM drive then use Migraine assistant.
    or
If your files are on a data drive, then drag and drop manually into their Music, Documents, Pictures etc. but you need to create a new user that matches your old user, and you need to change the hard drive to match what it was before just to avoid problems.

  • I'm having trouble with Migration Asst.

I am in the process of migrating files and settings from my old G4 to my new Mac Mini. In the "Select a Migration Method" window I clicked "From a Time Machine backup or other disk". When I click "Continue" I get a window which says "Select Your Disk" but the spinning wheel in the disk selection pane spins without ever recognizing a disk. The backup disks are mounted on the desktop but I can't find out how to select one of them.
I am using a Firewire 400 external drive with 4 backup partitions. The FW 400 drive is connected to my Mini FW 800 port via a Newer Technology FW 400 to FW 800 adapter.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Migration Asst: Transfer SOME (not ALL) apps to new Mac? Is 10.4 10.3 OK ?

I have a PB G4 running 10.4.11. I also just obtained an iBook G3 running 10.3.9. I don't have the System Install disks for either 10.4 or 10.3.
My goal is to transfer SOME (but not ALL) of my applications from the PB with 10.4.11 to the iBook with 10.3.9, using Migration Assistant. Is this even possible? Does Migration Assistant have the capacity to do ANY of the following tasks? :
    1. Transfer just some applications (which the user chooses) but not all of them?
    2. Transfer applications or users backwards down the OS scale, going from 10.4 to 10.3?
    3. Transfer an entire OS from one computer to the other? I.e. Can I use Migration Assistant to transfer 10.4.11 itself from the PB G4 to the older iBook G3?
I haven't tried it out yet because I don't want to mess anything up in case it's not allowed to go backwards down the OS scale. I think it is assumed that the new computer onto which the Migration Assistant will transfer new files will be running an OS that is at least as up-to-date as the donor computer's.
Also, the reason I don't want to transfer ALL my applications is that there is not enough hard drive space on the old iBook G3 to hold all the applications. I just need a few of them, but no longer have the original install disks.
If all else fails, I can try to do it manually, but with all the support files some of these applications have, I'm sure to mess it up. Hence my hope in Migration Assistant.
Any help with any of these questions would be appreciated, even if you can't answer all of them. Thanks.

    BDAqua --
OK, thanks. Your answers tell me I shouldn't try to use Migration Assistant in this case. The size of my "Applications" folder on my PB G4 is larger than the entire hard drive on the iBook G3. So if it's "all or nothing," I'll have to go with nothing. I'll just see if I can transfer the applications I need by hand, though that may be difficult -- I'm sure to leave out some key hidden "support" files and folders.
As for the side issue of needing to be in possession of the OS installation disks to even use the OS at all: does that mean one is legally required to wipe one's drive if one loses the disks that came with the computer? Say it ain't so! If that were the case, half the Macs in the US would have to be abandoned, since misplacing or losing the install disks is pretty commonplace. And buying used computers would become a near impossibility, since generally people don't include the disks with the computers. I bought both the PB G4 and the iBook G3 used, and in neither case did they come with the disks. Just the computer, nothing else. I have no choice but to use the OSes as is!
