Migration fails at Upgrading services
G4 Xserve with 10.4.11, static ip, normal collection of apps and services over a period of 8 years (very happy with the machine). User homes, around 50Gb, mounted on a separate drive from the boot drive. I just bought a new Xserve with SSD for OS and three drives for a raid. I install the new machine in the rack, try to startup and realize that it can't find a boot drive, open the cabinet, and find the SSD drive loose inside. I plug it back in and go through Server Setup Assistant. I choose to migrate from my 10.4.11 machine using target disc mode. All appears to be working fine, it says it successfully migrated my info. I click continue and a dialog called "Setting Up" appears with a yellow dot beside "Setting serial number" and a message in the lower left corner that says "Upgrading services". The interface appears to be stalled at this point for hours. I let it run overnight, and it never proceeds past this dialog. At some point, I get an error that the hard disc is almost full. I restart the next morning and despite trying multiple solutions mentioned in the forums (unplugging the network cable, starting in single use mode and editing the hosts file, reinstalling the OS from the Install disc and starting over, etc) I still cannot get past this dialog. I can't log in and set things manually....nothing. The SSD drive is 128GB and I can't recall exactly how much was on my original boot drive, but it wasn't more than 20 Gb. Could the migration assistant be trying to pack all 50Gb of my User home directories (on a separate drive previously) onto my new boot drive and causing problem?
Any ideas on how I can get past the wizard so I can fix things manually, somehow?
Thanks for any help...it's been 3 days of misery.
Jack
i'd recommend not upgrading your config and instead starting with a fresh install of 10.6 server.
for the service config, export the settings on the old server and import them on the new.
for user accounts, export users, groups, etc. and import on the new server. enough has changed with both service config and OD between 10.4 and 10.6 that i recommend staying away from a straight migration in place. the exported users will have their passwords wiped, but you can set them to defaults and require changing them on first login with ldap policy.
as for data, just move it in place as needed with rsync or your tools of choice. since you have the 3 internal drives separate from your ssd boot, dump all data on them. it's possible the migration copied too much data to the boot drive, thus filling it. since i never do such upgrades/migrations, i'm not sure, though.
strangely, the xserve with ssd i most recently configured also had the ssd drive disconnected and floating inside the case. thanks, quality control…

Mailbox migration failing after Upgrading CU5 - CU6
hello fellow readers,
we have an Exchange 2007 (latest needed Patchlevel) / Exchange 2013 CU6 Environment and are now having trouble migrating user mailboxes from the Ex2007 mailbox server to the new Ex2013 server.
migration of the first boxes before applying CU6 went fine and smooth, but now all mailbox moves are stuck with the status "Qeued".
a ps command "get-moverequeststatistics karl.treiber" brings the following
Postfach 'Karl Treiber' wird zurzeit nicht verschoben. + CategoryInfo : InvalidArgument: (karl.treiber:MoveRequestIdParameter) [Get-MoveRequestStatistics], Mana gementObjectNotFoundException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : [Server=SERVERNAME,RequestId=bf51511d-c7b8-4b39-ad60-caa71015cc6c,TimeStamp=10.11.2014 11 :27:29] [FailureCategory=Cmdlet-ManagementObjectNotFoundException] 9B1AC428,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.Recipien tTasks.GetMoveRequestStatistics + PSComputerName : SERVERNAME.DOMAIN.local
i'm guessing that this is correct, as the migration hasn't started yet. in somehow similar threads people suggest putting the BadItemLimit higher, so i tried running ps command "set-moverequest karl.treiber -baditemlimit 9999" bringing the following
'Microsoft.Exchange.MailboxReplicationService.TransactionalRequestJob' auf 'DC.DOMAIN.local' gefunden wurden.
+ CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Set-MoveRequest], ManagementObjectNotFoundException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : [Server=SERVERNAME,RequestId=ab82c24b-7914-4382-8de2-34462d4993b3,TimeStamp=10.11.2014 11
:38:01] [FailureCategory=Cmdlet-ManagementObjectNotFoundException] 285DB966,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.Recipien
tTasks.SetMoveRequest
+ PSComputerName : SERVERNAME.DOMAIN.local
my guess is, that something is missing in AD - but what? DC replication is checked and working as normal. i looked up the AD object of the user, searchung for Exchange values, finding some connecting to mailbox
moves, but none similar to "Microsoft.Exchange.MailboxReplicationService.TransactionalRequestJob".
everything worked in CU5 -> after updating to CU6 we had serious issues with mailbox databases in dirty shutdown and called MS or help. as mentioned
here this was a known error and they gave us the
hotfix for that. the hotfix seemed to be so "hot" that it fixed the database problem but brought new ones, as the fix seems to not check Exchange installation path, assuming its always c:\Program Files\... (which it is not in our case).
here they suggest to run "setup /preparedomain" again, but i am worried about possible new problems.
has anyone suggestions what to check?Hello KidStealth,
Please try the following steps:
1. Configure the database:
Get-MailboxDatabase | Set-MailboxDatabase –DataMoveReplicationConstraint None
2. We can run prepare domain, it will not cause any issue as I know.
3. Then we can try to move the mailboxes.
If issue persists, in my experience, this issue could be related to the corrupted items within the mailbox folders, so please remove the old move request, start a
new move request, use parameter “–verbose” behind the move request command, then check the detailed error message. Or we can check via command:
Get-MoveRequestStatistics -Identity “mailbox_name” –IncludeReport | fl >C:\error.txt
Please post the detailed error message. It it’s in English, I would appreciate it.

What to do when SLS - Lion Server Upgrade & Migration Fail
Hi everyone,
I've had a tough time over the past week trying to updating my SLS to LS. (It was a slow week at the office so despite the warnings in these discussions I wasn't disturbing anyone, so I thought I'd try...) Both an upgrade to the current running system and a clean install on a wipe of that hard drive stall at the "Configuring Services" "Upgrading services" screen of the set up process. The migration path eventually fails, and as far as I can tell, it seems that the upgrade path just stays there forever.
Don't worry - I'm doing this all on a Super Duper! clone of my primary drive, so I can go back to SLS whenever I need to.
BUT, I can tell that the server's status is at least partially okay, even in this stalled setup state - iChat seems to work on various clients, and I can use Server Admin to see stats and services, etc.
So despite the discomfort of a failed install, part of me feels like I'll be fine with the LS if I can just figure out how to move my old data into the right places for the new system to use it. But I can't find any guidance for that. I'm looking to migrate OD (seems to have migrated fine), iCal, iChat, Address Book, Wikis, Time Machine, and File Sharing (which should be trivial to set up, I reckon).
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks very much,
WillhausOkay, so I've had some marginal success.
After leaving the hung install for a ridiculous amount of time (24+ hours), I realized that I could click the help button, and from the help window click the "further info about Lion Server" link to launch Safari. That gave me access to Software Update from the Apple menu, which then let me install the latest Safari update which conveniently enough requires a restart.
After restart, the Server Migration Assistant kicked in again, but failed quickly in the upgrading services stage. Another restart, and the sever finally booted more or less normally.
The strange thing was that although chat services worked fine during the hung install, all OD-related services stopped working after restarting. Turns out there were no users or groups in OD. Importing them from an OD archive, though, restored them.
So now iChat works great (even the old chat longs migrated successfully), and AFP is properly sharing our volumes across our studio's network. So our server is limping along.
The other services we need that aren't up yet are Wiki and iCal. Some info about those:
Wiki: administrators can log in and see all wikis just fine. That's awesome because it means the data migrated successfully. Any non-admin users can log in, but are then get a wiki-styled page that says simply "No wikis found". It's as if they don't have permissions to see the wikis, even though in Server.app they belong to the groups that the wikis are associated with. I've tried removing and re-adding users to groups, but that doesn't seem to do it. Any ideas how to fix this?
Calendar: While I can't get this to work, it's not like it's completely lifeless. An account in a client Lion iCal configured with the proper Lion settings returns an error that reads:
"The Server is Busy or Unavailable.
"The server at myserver.com is currently unable to handle the connection for account “ Calendars” due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. If this continues you should contact the server administrator.
"You may try to connect to the server again or take the account offline."
As a logged in administrator, in a wiki clicking on Calendar in the nab bar goes to the calendar style page with an unending dialogue box that reads "Getting events from server". And clicking on Calendar from Home page footer takes me to the URL https://myserver.com/webcal with an error that says:
"Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
Apache/2.2.20 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.20 OpenSSL/0.9.8r DAV/2 Server at myserver.com Port 443"
Again, at least I'm confident that the data migrated properly - I can find all the calendar data in it's proper new location - but either the service won't start or something's not configured correctly. I've tried chaining the hostname and restarting the service about a billion times. I've got no idea what to try next. Any ideas?
Thank you so much,

Upgrade service error after ZFD3 SP3 to ZFD4.01 upgrade
Hi,
Having upgraded from ZFD3.2 SP3 to ZFD4.01 and carefully following the
documentation instructions I still get the following error on the Inventory
Service startup screen:
"The Upgrade Service is migrating the schema
An error has occurred. The upgrade service is exiting now."
The Inv Srv object Server Status log says:
"1178: An error occured while performing the DBSchema migration
1177: Unable to complete all the operations, the upgrade service is exiting
with errors.
106: The Storer succesfully connected to the database
108:the database in not initialized as it is being upgraded"
All of these errors on the support site have as a fix either restart the
Inventory Service or contact Novell.
I've spent some hours now looking for a fix on Knowledgebase and in the Zen
forums but can't find anything useful. This is the second time I've run the
upgrade and this problem has occurred. I've reinstalled Zen3.2 from scratch,
applied SP1 and SP3.
I've checked policies and database objects, all appears as it should be.
These seem to be the relevant errors from the log files:
Migration Log:
Migration Exception Message->Could not add the dbspace..ASA Error -121:

Is there no option but to go straight to Novell?

When I go to Central Admin > Upgrade and Migration > Manage Databases Upgrade Status, I have 2 content databases which have the status:
Database is up to date, but some sites are not completely upgraded.
How can I determine which sites are not completely upgraded?Manage Databases Upgrade Status will provide you all active and offline DB details, you can get same result
using below PowerShell cmdlet.
Get-SPDatabase and Get-SPContentDatabase will provide all active database/Content DB in Farm which include Service application db, central admin DB.
Get-SPDatabase | Format-Table Name, ID
Coming back to your question, if you find that there are some site are not completely upgraded then run below command and understand the cause if issue on specific DB.
Test-SPContentDatabase WSS_ContentDB_Name
If you find any missing file issue in DB then resolve these issue to upgrade content database.
(verify all customizations referenced within the content database are also installed in the web application. This cmdlet can be issued
against a content database currently attached to the farm, or a content database that is not connected to the farm )
Use the Upgrade-SPContentDatabase cmdlet
to resume a failed database upgrade or begin a build-to-build database upgrade against a SharePoint content database
Upgrade-SPContentDatabase WSS_Content

Server Calendar migration failed
Hi,
last week when installing the latest server update for Mavericks the Calendar and Contacts stopped working. I tried everything to get it working again for the past few days like reinstalling server and even updated to Yosemite and installed Server 4 with the hope it would migrate correctly but without any luck.
The calendar state keeps in Starting and will never change to Started.
Below you can find the migration.log:

Stuck in a loop (wont upgrade services successfully)
After Snow Leopard server is installed, I entered in the serial number, and it tells me it's "Setting Up ... Your server is being configured."
In the bottom left hand corner it tells me its "Migrating OD" etc. then that its "Upgrading services"
After a seemingly long wait it eventually tells me -
"An error occurred while configuring your server."
"The following actions failed or were not attempted:"
The list includes the locale, configuring just about every server defaults (Web, iCal, etc.), and "Setting up server"
Then it misleads me by saying "Your server needs to be restarted to complete setup." Which only leads to the whole process, and same errors happening all over again.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated.I encountered something similar during one of my upgrade sequences a while back, and (like Nate Taylor) worked around it by using the Disk Utility clone I had made of the disk prior to the upgrade as an server data import source. I blanked the system disk, installed, and selected a configuration import from that disk. And yes, the problem and the symptoms and associated diagnostics were reported to Apple.

Does anyone know why ITunes Match sometimes fails to upgrade certain popular tracks to 256 AAC when it's established that the song/track exists in the Itune store? I just completed the reorganization of my ITunes library today after using iTunes Match to upgrade the compression quality of my songs. And out of approximately 1100 songs, iTunes Match failed to upgrade the compression quality on about a 100 of these tracks. It's not a big deal but I do find it very interesting with popular tracks. As just one example to make my point, Sheryl Crow's 1998 hit My Favorite Mistake was not converted from the current 128 kbps to 256. I could list a number of others that I see in the ITunes Store. And it doesn't make any sense. If the song is in the ITunes store, it should be making a match with the tracks in my library. All of my music meets the minimum compression quality to be eligible for upgrades to 256 AAC under the ITunes Match service. Any thoughts/feedback from anyone? Thanks.

Server 2012 r2 live migration fails with hardware error
Hello all, we just upgraded one of our hyper v hosts from server 2012 to server 2012 r2; previously we had live replication setup between it and another box on the network which was also running server 2012. After installing server 2012 r2 when a live migration
is attempted we get the message:
"The virtual machine cannot be moved to the destination computer. The hardware on the destination computer is not compatible with the hardware requirements of this virtual machine. Virtual machine migration failed at migration source."
The servers in question are both dell, currently we have a poweredge r910 running server 2012 and a poweredge r900 running server 2012 r2. The section under processor for "migrate to a physical computer using a different processor" is already checked
and this same vm was successfully being live replicated before the upgrade to server 2012 r2. What would have changed around hardware requirements?
We are migrating from server 2012 on the poweredge r910 to server 2012 r2 on the poweredge r900. Also When I say this was an upgrade, we did a full re install and wiped out the installation of server 2012 and installed server 2012 r2, this was not an upgrade
installation. The only cause I’ve seen so far is virtual switches being named differently. I do remember that one of our VMs didn’t move, but we simply bypassed this problem, using one-time backup (VeeamZIP, more specifically).
If it’s one-time operation you can use the same procedure for the VMs in question -> backup and restore them at new server.
Kind regards, Leonardo. -
ConnectionManager::invoke::Failed to find service connection url. I keep getting this error line I have just got my macbook pro back from repairs and a drive upgrade could this be the problem...?
Hey gasemp,
If you see that error I would sign out then sign back in to see if that resolves the issue:

Choose Store > Sign Out.
Sign in using an Apple ID
Choose Store > Sign In, or click Sign In in the Quick Links section.
The Quick Links section is located in the right part of the window shown when you click Featured, Top Charts, or Categories in the toolbar.
Enter your Apple ID and password, and then click Sign In.

Failed to upgrade more than one table at same time
Hi
In Deployment Manager, I failed to upgrade more than one table at same time.
I tried to hightlight 4 tables and set the default action as Upgrade, and click File/Generate Deploy. It passed the code generation step then I click Deploy, they are all failed with no error message.
But they are all successful when I upgrade them one by one. Any one has any idea about this?
For the known reason, we have no choice to do the deployment with action of 'upgrade' through OMBPlus, instead, can only do that interactively through OWB Client. I can't imagine to ask our Production side DBA to upgrade 80 tables one by one. Or I have to use the generated scripts to do the upgrade, which will resulted in 'no deploy status updated' in OWB. Any help will be very appricated.
The version I'm using is OWB 10g.
Thanks,
DamingHi
First of all, Patrick's solution doesn't work for me. I didn't do cloning and there is no problem when check the WB tables.
Second, I think your solution is only good for the developing environment just to get tables upgrade via deployment manager. In most cases, when you do a new release on PROD environment you just exp/imp the MDL file from DEV to PROD and any developing is not recommended on PROD. But your approach is trying to manually the DB, and then EDIT the mapping to do the Reconcile and then deploy. Surely you can do that if you have full control on your PROD side. However, in my situation, I have no access to the PROD for the security reason and an DBA Operator of the Client is responsible to implement my Migration process on PROD by himself. -
So, I've purchased a Mac mini to replace my aging Mid 2009 mini on which I've been running Mavericks Server. In trying to answer the question of how best to move services from the old machine to the new, I've stumbled into the fact that Migration Assistant can apparently migrate not just user data for workstations and laptops, but also service data for servers. The problem is there isn't much detail in the docs about how good a job it does when going from one machine to another without changing OS releases. There's a very detailed document in the KB about going from older versions of Server to new (OS X Server: Upgrade and migration from Lion Server or Snow Leopard Server) and a general doc on migrating from another Mac under Mavericks (OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks) but that has no details about Server.
Has anyone used Migration Assistant to move services from one system running Server to a new system? Are there any details that are particularly important to get right? Are there things that require manual steps after Migration Assistant is done?
There are other ways I could tackle the problem, of course. I could simply swap drives between the systems, but the new system has two drives that are bigger, faster, and I intend to mirror them. That would complicate such an approach. I'd really like to keep the conversation constrained to a discussion of Migration Assistant as the primary method.yes. I migrated a server frm lion to mavericks following these notes a while back:
OS X Server: Upgrade and migration from Mountain Lion
i do not recall having any problems with it. -
Need to upgrade service providers of Moss 2007 to SharePoint 2013
I have upgraded the Moss 2007 Content database via native approach into SharePoint 2013. I am wondering how we can upgrade the service providers of Moss 2007 to SharePoint 2013 service applications.
Regards Restless SpiritHi Restless,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to upgrade the service providers of MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2013 service application.
Per my knowledge, you need to firstly upgrade the service providers of moss 2007 to SharePoint 2010 via database content, then upgrade SharePoint 2010 service applications to SharePoint 2013.
There are some useful articles for your reference:

Upgrade Service Applications a week prior to Content DB attach
Hi,
I ran a database attach upgrade from SP10 to SP13 in a test environment and now want to proceed with the production environment. In order to plan for the least possible downtime, I have the following questions:
Is it possible to upgrade Service Applications a week prior to the content databases?
Namely, I'm wondering about the Secure Store service app.
If the above is not desirable, would upgrading everything now (in 2010 mode) and then on the GoLive date, overwrite all Content DBs with the latest backup work?
Thanks in Advance :-)I think you can do it, i dont see any issue in advance upgrade.
Personally, I would go with this approach(as i did this). Migrate every thing and test it with live data(so any issue you can fix before live). On day of GoLive, upgrade the current backup.
Please remember to mark your question as answered &Vote helpful,if this solves/helps your problem. ****************************************************************************************** Thanks -WS MCITP(SharePoint 2010, 2013) Blog: http://wscheema.com/blog
