Migration from 2008 Foundation to 2012R2 Std

I have a client that needs to upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Std from Server 2008 Foundation. From what I gathered here on TechNet, the best way of doing this is to do the following in order:
1) Setup new 2008 R2 server
2) FSMO from 2008 foundation => the new 2008 R2 server.
3) Demote 2008 foundation server.
4) Upgrade the 2008 R2 server to 2012 R2 Std.
Is this correct or do I need to do any other additional steps?
(=Chris=)

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your question. However, I am not quite sure of your environment.
Is the Windows server 2008 Foundation a DC with FSMO role? Is it the unique DC in the domain? Since you mentioned “Setup new 2008 R2 server”, did you mean that you have another server except
the Foundation server? I would appreciate it if you can share more information about your existing environment.According
to the steps that you have provided, it seems that you want to migrate your AD from server 2008 Foundation to Server 2012 R2 instead of upgrading the operating system to Server 2012 R2 standard.
Windows server 2008 Foundation cannot upgrade to Windows server 2012 R2 directly, you need to upgrade it to Windows server 2008 R2 firstly. For general migration steps, you need to add the
new server into the domain and make it to be a DC and Global Catalog server. Then transfer the FSMO role to the new server. After you make sure that the duplication between the DCs is competeled, you can demote the old DC. In addition, I recommend you
to backup your old DC before migration.
Best regards,
Susie

  • Inter-site replication and KCC, when migrating from 2008 SP1 to 2012 R2

    Hello,
We have a very simple AD infrastructure, two sites.  I have built out a 2012 R2 server, extended the AD schema and promoted it to a domain controller.  Reviewing the existing AD replication topology, we currently have a 2008 SP1 server as a DC
designated as the source/destination for inter-site replication, which appears to have been decided by KCC.
I will be decomming this 2008 SP1 server, having migrated off the FSMO roles to a few other DCs.
Will KCC automatically know to adjust the replication topology when the 2008 SP1 DC is offline?  Should I demote it after migrating off the FSMO roles?
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi,
    Thanks for your post.
By default, the KCC reviews and makes modifications to the Active Directory replication topology every 15 minutes to ensure propagation of data, either directly or transitively, by creating and deleting connection objects as needed. The KCC recognizes
changes that occur in the environment and ensures that domain controllers are not orphaned in the replication topology.
For more detail information, you could refer to:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc961781.aspx
For the migration, you could transfer the Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) Role and remove the Windows 2008 R2 domain controller, please refer to:

    Can you help me ?

    Hi,
share out the Sysvol directory. However,  it is recommended that you enable the system to share this directory.
For additional information about enabling the system to share this directory out on its own:      (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/257338/EN-US/)
To verify that the Sysvol directory is shared out, you can either open Windows Explorer, or  type
net share at a command prompt to see if the Sysvol share is showing.  By default, the Sysvol share is located in the following folder: %SystemRoot%\Sysvol\Sysvol.
It is also recommended that you check the File Replication Service log.  When replication has completed (with a domain with just one domain controller) the File Replication Service log reports the following event:
Event 13516: The File Replication Service has stopped preventing the computer from becoming a domain controller.
The system volume can take some time to initialize depending on the network.

  • Issues with old calendar items after migration from SBS2008R1 to Windows 2012R2+Exchange 2013

    Hello,
After migrating a customer from Windows Small Business Server 2008 R1 to Microsoft Windows Server 2012 (DC) and Microsoft Windows Server 2012 & Exchange 2013 there are a few issue regarding
the GAL and old migrated calender items that we are unable to resolve:
Old calender items which were Exported to PST when the Server 2008 R1 environment was still live were imported to the new mailbox of the user, located on the Exchange 2013 mail database. This
seemed to be working just fine.
The problems arise when a user tries to edit or re-send an old calender item. There actually are 2 problems:
    1. When resending an old calender item, OLD GAL entries are used (even when re-entering the contact details) and the emails are send to nobody and you get the mail back from postmaster
    2. When updating an old calender item you get an error that you do not have permissions, probably because you are NOT the 'old' Exchange user.
    Thanks in advance!

Did you use Exmerge or similar to export?
You may have an issue like that explained here.

  • File Server Migration from 2008 Standard to 2012 Standard accross different subnet

    Hi
Im going to migrate File server from Windows 2008 Standard server to Windows 2012 Standard . Source and Destination Servers are on different subnets . According to this
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj863566.aspx I cannot use Server migrations tool in-built into 2012 .  Im not sure if I can use file server migration toolkit 1.2?.
Also my Domain controllers are mixture of Windows 2003, 2008 , 2008 R2 and I've upgraded the schema level to 2012 R2 . Is there anything else I need to be aware of ?
Can anyone please recommended best way to go about doing this migration . Is file server migration toolkit 1.2 is compatible ?  .
Only reason I don't want to use Robocopy to this is because If I miss a small setting etc then I will face unwanted downtime.
I presume Migration toolkit will also create all the Quotas etc on the destination server .
    Thanks
    mumtaz

    Hi mumtaz,
We could use file server migration toolkit 1.2 to migrate file server between the two subnets. In order to maintain security settings after the migration, please ensure the security of files and folders after they are migrated to a target file server, the File
Server Migration Wizard applies permissions that are the same as or more restrictive than they were on the source files and folders, depending on the option you select.
In the meantime, quota cannot migrate by this tool but we can export and import the quota using dirquota command. Export the templates as xml and then import to new server:
    dirquota template export /file:C:\test.xml
    dirquota template import /file:C:\test.xml
For more detailed information, please see:
    Template Export and Import Scenarios

  • Domain Controller, DHCP, DNS Migration from 2008 r2 to 2012 Essentials

I would like to migrate Domain Controller, DHCP, and DNS functions to a new 2012 Essentials server in a 2008 r2 domain.  I would like  the 2008 r2 server to remain as applications server.  Is it possible to do this?  I've seen in TechNet
a reference to this type of migration, but am concerned about the reference that after 21 days the 2008 will shut down.  Is it that the server will shut down or the Domain Controller function on the 2008 will shut down? I will need the 2008 setup as is
for our application server, so I want to be sure that the migration will not interfer with that.

As long as your existing server is not also an SBS or other Essentials server, it'll be fine. The shutdown after 21 days occurs when multiple SBS or Essentials servers are on the same domain.

  • Migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new san hardware

We are getting ready to migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on an iscsi san to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on a new iscsi san.
I've been searching for a "best practices" article for this but have been coming up short.  The information I have found either pertains to migrating from 2008 r2 to 2012 r2 with failover cluster volumes on the same hardware, or migrating
to different hardware without failover cluster volumes.
If there is anyone out there that has completed a similar migration, it would be great to hear any feedback you may have on your experiences.
Currently, my approach is as follows:
    1. Configure new hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new SAN with new 2012 r2 hostnodes and 2012 r2 management server
    2. Turn off the virtual machines on old 2008 r2 hyper-v hostnodes
    3. Stop the VMMS service on the 2008 r2 hostnodes
    4. copy the virtual machine files and folders over to the new failover cluster volumes
    5. Import vm's into server 2012 r2 hyper-v.
Any feedback on the opertain I have in mind would be helpful.
    Thank you,
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
Yes , I agree with that "file copy " can achieve migration.
Also you can try "copy cluster wizard " :

  • Migrating from SQL Server 2008.

What options do I have to migrate from 2008 to work around the quick migrate? How do I generate the capture scripts from the SQL Server database to bring into developer to bypass the utility?
    Thanks

    Wrong forum.
Oracle has a tool named "Migration Workbench" that should help you though I'd be surprised if it was compatible with any new SS 2008 features.
My preference, due to the strangeness that is SQL Server, is to reverse engineer objects to DDL and run the scripts and dump the data as vertical
bar delimited ASCII and load with Oracle SQL*Loader.
SQL Server 2008 has been out a very short time. I'd be interested in knowing why it is so quickly being abandoned. Thanks.

  • Migrating existion RD licence from Server 2008 R2 to 2012 Std Edition

    Dear team,
We have two servers with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition. One server for Domain Controller and another is Terminal Server with 57 License (License Server). Now we have purchased New Rack server ( HP ProLiant
G8) and Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition. We want to replace our old hardware and OS, but want to keep (1) Domain Structure, Group Policies, Users  (2) Same license for Terminal Services. I have two questions.
    (a) Is migration of existing RDP Licence possible to new hardware and OS? If possible what Should be done?
    (b) Is migration of existing AD possible to new hardware and OS? If possible what Should be done?
    First question is more important.
Hope a favorable, detailed and early reply.

    Hi,
    (a) Is migration of existing RDP Licence possible to new hardware and OS? If possible what Should be done?
You could refer to the following ms article about moving Remote Desktop Licensing to a New Server:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc730776.aspx
Meanwhile, for the license related issue, you could contact Licensing Service Center support
    https://www.microsoft.com/licensing/servicecenter/Help/Contact.aspx
    (b) Is migration of existing AD possible to new hardware and OS? If possible what Should be done?
    First question is more important.
For this issue, you could follow MVP's suggestion, adding server 2012 to your domain, making it as domain controller then do the migration.

The error appeared while Applying Master Page..
I have managed to fix that removing "15" from  MasterPageFile="~/_layouts/15/simple.master", so the path  is
    MasterPageFile="~/_layouts/simple.master".
Otherwise, it could be fixed changing attribute "Localizable" to true  in <SharePoint:ScriptLink language="javascript" name="core.js" OnDemand="true" EnableCustomActions="false" Localizable="false"
runat="server" />    in  simplev4.master   MasterPage, however this way is not desirable.
    hope that could help..

  • Migrating a website from 2008 R2 to 2012 ( iis 8.5)

Hi Need help with the following scenario.
I need to move the entire website from 2008 R2 to new 2012 server, please find the details below.
    Web site number : 1
    Current Server 2008 R2 ( iis 7.5)
    Destination : 2012 ( iis 8.5 )
Is there any migration tool available for the same  ?

    Hi Joshy,
I agree with Tim. You should post the question in IIS forum. I believe we will get a better assistance there. There is the URL of IIS forum:
    http://forums.iis.net/
I also find two simialr threads from IIS forum. It seems that you can use
IIS Easy MIgration Tool to migrate. Please refer to and check if can help you.

  • Migrating from SBS 2011 to Windows Server 2012R2 Standard with 365

Im looking to move SBS 2011 to Server 2012R2 standard and with a 365 migration as well.
    Im thinking
    BPA for AD (health check)
Add the Server2012R2 as a DC
    Ensure replication
    Move DHCP
    Change DNS
Now this is where I get lost, now Im lost to use either dirsync or add essentials service, I have gone for standard and 30 cals with the option  as I have 28 users and the essentials service would make everything quite nice for remote access and backups
etc....  however I don't know whether to just use dirsync with password replication instead ?
Currently Im aiming towards getting the dc up and running then enabling essentials on the dc but I dont know how it will effect SBS and having essentials on the same network and sync'ing people to the cloud ? So Should I use DirSync on a different server
instead to sync up to azure ?
Finally with 365 I have only ever done a migration involving an export of pst's from an exchange box and then on a new domain with new pc's and reimport the pst's on the user accounts in outlook.
However I have read when migrating to 365 was using exchange 2010 there was a application
to move everything across however you needed an ssl cert iirc ? so I dont know how it works now since the nice new dashboard upgrade (assuming the tool has been updated like dirsync)
along with the above how does AD now know where exahcnge if you use the migration app with an ssl cert and is it a case of still running the 365 config tool to configure each user to look at their mail in the
cloud ? Also is it a good idea to enable essentials from the start of the 2012r2 dc for replication top 365 or to use dirsync ?
then finally when replications is all good start transferring the FSMO roles over to the new DC and demote and remove the SBS server
I have seen (below) but i dont think it covers this scenario and I cant be the only person in this situation =\ ?

    Hi,
Would you please let us know current situation of this issue? If any update, please feel free to let us know.

I’m a little confused with the description. Did you mean that set up DC (Windows Server 2012 Standard) and
then install the Windows Server Essentials Experience role? If so, when you migrate, please refer to the article:
Migrate from Previous Versions to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials or Windows Server Essentials Experience
Regarding to migrate Exchange to Office 365, please refer to following articles.

Meanwhile, there is an additional article that you can refer to:

If anything I misunderstand, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
    Hope this helps.
