Migration from an iBook, w/o using Firewire

Dear friends,
a friend just got a brand new Macbook, and I told her I help migrating her old stuff from an old iBook to her shiny new laptop. I proceeded, with confidence and trying to appear savvy, to connect a firewire cable from her iBook to her Macbook (basically following on-screen instructions) but it didn't work. Seems to be that the iBook's firewire port is kapputt. Is there other way to connect both computers and safe my face? Thank you for your help.
PD what happened to the dolphins?

Follow the instructions in this article, and then transfer over files and documents by hand.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

  • HT3231 Is it better to migrate to a new MacBook Pro using FireWire, from Time Machine, or over ethernet?

    Hello,
Is it better to migrate to a new MacBook Pro (non Retina display) using FireWire, from Time Machine, or over ethernet? The older Mac is a MacBook (Intel, 2007 vintage). The Time Machine backup is to a Western Digital external drive with FireWire & USB ports.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the helpful reply.
After posting, I read & researched further. We're going to be limited by the hardware – the MacBook & external drive both have FireWire 400, & we don't have a 400 to 800 cable or adapter. So we'll connect by ethernet, & be patient that it make take some time.
I have to assume that Migration Assistant will be just as comprehensive regardless of the connection method / protocol.
    Best!

  • Migrating from old iBook

Since the new MacBook has no Firewire I started the migration from an old iBook to the new MacBook by ethernet. However, the Assistant on the DVD that comes with the new MacBook does not run on 10.3.
    Now what?
Apple, what the &^%#*? Are you indeed turning into M$?

I used Migration Assistant (MA) to transfer all my files and media from my old PowerBook G4 to my new MacBook. When I opened MA on the old computer, I was asked to put the OS X CD that came with the new Mac into the old optical drive. Something was downloaded onto the old Mac that made it compatible with the new Mac. I assumed it was to sync the versions of MA but I was never told. All I know was that I was then able to begin the transfer.
I used my wireless connection rather than the ethernet ports. To my dismay, the transfer took over 11 hours. To give you some scale, I had over 6000 photos and videos, about 1200 songs, less than 100 docs. As I primarily use the old computer for the internet and iLife, I had very few applications other than the ones that came with it when I bought it. However, I wanted the settings and bookmarks - especially Safari - so I included Applications in the transfer. That's where I think I made a mistake because it seemed to take an inordinate amount of time checking versions and transferring. You never really know what is going on during the transfer but there are vague one-liners like, "Transferring Applications" that are displayed under the sliding thermometer that tracks your progress. I left the two computers open, side by side, and went to bed with my fingers crossed.
I got up the next morning and immediately looked at the new Mac to see if everything/anything had come over. I couldn't find a thing but I had lost 40 Gigs of memory somewhere. I searched frantically through every folder on the new hard-drive but couldn't find the new files. I finally had to take it down to the Apple store where I have bought it and get a Genius to help me. First thing he did was check my Users folder to see how many logins there were for this computer. To distinguish the old Mac from the new Mac, I had forgotten that I had added my middle initial to my name. A simple logoff and login as my new personna and Voila! Transfer completed!! Everything right where it should be and all my settings. MA was slow but it worked.
Sorry for relating the total saga but I it might be useful to others. I don't know if using an ethernet cable would have speeded things up. Maybe someone else can tell that story.
I'm happy with the new MacBook, although I miss the size and convenience of my old beloved 12" G4. I don't have any glare issues because I tilt the screen and change my seat for better light - which is why I thought most of us bought a laptop and not a desktop. It's mobile, faster, bigger, and brighter. I'm happy. Hope this helps.

  • Migration from G3 iBook to Macbook Pro 2.16

I bought a Macbook Pro Core2Duo 2.16 when I was in the States in January. Used Migration Assistant to transfer system from the iBook G3 (10.3.9) when I got home in February. No real problems (& the Pro is perfect -- and the great iBook is still in use) but there is a system confusion I caused and then ignored.
On login I have 2 user accounts where there should be one (me). One is in the name of the old system, Howard Dratch, and opens with the PW for the Pro and Tiger. The other is hfdratch which should have been the name for the new machine. It shakes off the PW for the MBP. I have been worried about logging in with it on iBook's PW wondering if I will enter some Panther ghost-system.
Also, in HD/Users(the folder with an icon)/Deleted Users there is a dmg file labeled hfdratch with 4.4GB. I haven't mounted it to see what comes out. Should it be there taking up 4+gigs?
Obviously I did something wrong when I migrated. Any suggestions as to whether to delete one of the user options on startup and what, if anything, to do to the dmg file would be appreciated.
    ibook 900mhz,640mb,40GB ice dual USB(10.3.9)/Macbook Pro 2.16, 120gb Mac OS X (10.4.10) Mercury 80GB HD

An ethernet cable should go faster. That's how I did it yesterday. However, even so the Migration Assistant said it would take 5 hours. So I drilled down into the options and de-selected my music and my photos and just moved apps and account settings. After about 90 minutes I was up and running. At that point I enabled File Sharing on my old computer, then logged into it using Finder on the new one. I manually copied over my music and photos into the appropriate directories while I continued to work. Despite what Migration Assistant said, it only took about 90 more minutes to do that while I was actually writing a document in MS Word on the new one.

  • Migrating from mac pro to mac mini firewire 400 - 800 cant find computer

    hi there
am trying to use migration assistant to move from old mac pro to new mac mini using firewire 400 - 800 cable but one computer cant see the other - any ideas anyone? have lots of large files so don't want to use wifi
    cheers

    Did t d this?
Make sure both computers are connected via FireWire or ThunderBolt before starting. If you connect the cables after Migration Assistant is already running, the source computer may not be properly detected.
Restart the source (original) Mac while pressing and holding the "T" key.
    You can use ethernet too:
Make sure that the source Mac and target Macs are connected to the same network, either wirelessly or via Ethernet. (You can directly connect the two Macs via an Ethernet cable if both are Ethernet capable. To make MacBook Air Ethernet capable, connect using the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter.)

  • Migration freezes at 3.2 gig, using firewire target drive or USB HD

I fell down the stairs while carrying my Powerbook. Screen bashed, case bent. Bought new Macbook Pro and tried to use firewire to migrate files, system always hangs when I get to about 3.2 gig. This is while using migration manager, or target drive and drag/drop. Then removed HD from old laptop and connected with USB external drive enclosure. Same exact problem. What gives? I can copy smaller folders, and I will do that if there is not a fix for this. Any ideas?
BTW, it does not matter what folder I copy, it always freezes at about 3.3 gig and locks up the finder. Thanks!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thank you everybody.
I just tried to copy from that HD via USB to another Mac, a 2 year old Imac with OS 10 whatever (non Intel). The really weird thing is that it also locked up at 3.24 gb; exacty the same as with the other computer. And exactly the same as if I copied another folder that was over 3.24 gig. So, 3.24 gig is magic number here.
I am almost sure that the 3.24 gig was the same spot where the trnasfer would lock when I was using target mode and firewire while this drive was still in the old broken Powerbook.
    Any thoughts?
BTW, I am not a computer expert, just a Mac user for work and home applications.
    Thanks again!

    Hi,
Changing the the network adapter to VMXNET 3 before switch version might cause this issue.
Could you please try the following:
    -  restore the vm using the working vmx file (with the existing network adapter)
    - Upgrade to 10.5 and do a switch version
    - Then power off the vm and change the the network adapter to VMXNET 3

Please give step by step process and give some idea about migration using powershell and other tools.

    Hi,
There is no direct content database migration approach from eRoom to SharePoint.
However many third party tools such as Metalogix, Tzunami, and AvePoint are available to migrate eRoom content to SharePoint as well as you can write your own utility
to migrate content since there are various eRoom API available for the same.

  • How to transfer photos from Imac to Macbook Pro using firewire?

What is the best way to transfer photos from my Imac to Macbook Pro using firewire?

Put one of the computers in Target Disk mode by holding down the T key while your computer is starting. By doing this, the hard drive of the computer you put in Target Disk will appear as an external drive in the other computer, so just open a Finder window and choose the other computer's hard drive in the sidebar.
Then, just go to the folder where your pictures are and copy them to your computer or to the Mac in Target Disk mode, depending on the computer you put in Target Disk

  • User settings migrated from Office 2007 to 2013 using OCT

Does anyone know what user settings are retained after upgrading Office 2007 to 2013 using the OCT? I have set the checkbox to migrate user settings in the OCT but all of the user's pinned documents are not longer there after the upgrade. Is this normal?

Microsoft doesn't support migrating directly from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2013, likely part of your decision to use a third party tool.
I'm not familiar with these error messages, I suspect they're from DocAve and not SharePoint.
My suggestion is to contact AvePoint support.

  • Data migration from Oracle to MS SQL using SSIS

    Hi friends,
I know this question must have been asked by many who are beginners to SSIS like me about migrating data from oracle database to sql server database but i still would like to raise this query again.
I have table called tbl_employee_oracle in oracle database from where i need to retrive the latest records(eg. latest record of each employee) from the table and populate the result into the sql server database table which is tbl_employee_sqlserver
    using ssis.
    The logic i thought of doing this is as below;
    1. Retrive all employees records from oracle database table.
    2. Dump these records into a temporary table(will have same table structure as in oracle database) in sql server.
    3. Creating a stored procedure in sql server which will contain logic to select the most recent records from this temporary table.
    4. Populate this result set into the final table of sql server.
Please suggest me if working on this logic is worth and any alternate logic to accomplish this task.

There are many opitons, but choose among for your scenario
    1. If your employee table is small with less than a few hundreds of record, you want to choose SCD Type 1 if not preserving histoy, incase of preserving history of records choose SCD2,
    2. If you have less than few millions of records you can choose look up to direct unmatched records to insert into Sql Server Destination and direct matched records could be updated using OLEDB Destination or Try Merge Left outer Join
    transform.
    3. If you have several millions of records, you may want to use your above method.
    4. Configuring to use CDC could be last option where there are large volumes of updates and inserts every few min to hours. But I'm not sure if this option can be set in Oracle Source.
Please mark this post as answer if it resolves your Problem. You may even mark it as helpful. Thanks

  • Migrate from Access 97 to Oracle using Migration Work Bench to mi

When I try to use Migration work bench to migrate an Access 97 database to Oracle using OWB I get "failed to truncate Source Model ORA-00942 tables or view does not exist" error message and I could not go further.
This happens during clearing the Source Model. Doe any one know what is this error means or any one had this problem before.
    Thanks
    Myl

    Hi Njha,
Did you create the Source Model using OMWB and then delete the tables in the OMWB repository manually ? Or is there a chance that the tables in your repository could have been corrupted in some way ? The OMWB is simply trying to truncate the tables it filled when a previous attempt was made to capture the source model before it re-populates the tables with data from your subsequent attempt at a capture. If the tables it is trying to truncate have been deleted or are corrupt, this error will be displayed.
A workaround to your problem would be to drop the schema you are using for the OMWB repository and create a new one.
    I hope this helps,
    Tom.
