Migration from G5 iMac

I just purchased a new iMac. I used the migration assistant to move my info. I now have an application folder in my application folder with my applications from the G5. Some are duplicates, some are older versions of the same app, and some are exclusive to one app folder or the other.
The old computer I inherited from my wife. When I got the new one I registered my self as the owner. Under the places list in the finder window it lists my wifes name.

Are you saying there's an Applications folder within your Applications folder? If so, the old Mac must have been set up that way, for some reason, so Migration Assistant was unable to sort out which ones to migrate.
You'll have to figure that out; in most cases, delete the ones in the inner folder, as the versions in the outer folder will be newer. The ones remaining may or may not run on the new Mac, but you should probably move them to the outer folder and delete the inner one (they may not work properly or be updated where they are).

Yes, that's her "home folder" (with the house icon). If you told Migration Assistant to transfer that user account, that's what it did. The name is not easily changed, unfortunately. You have three options:
Run Migration Assistant again, selecting only that account. You'll get a prompt that it's a duplicate, and the option to rename it (see the next to last screenshot in [Using Migration Assistant|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Migrate.html]). Then delete the one with her name.
Rename it, per [Mac OS X: How to change user short name or home directory name|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428], in spite of the warning in the Note there.
Leave it alone.

  • 2007 MacBook Pro issues after migration from 2011 iMac

I recently bought a used 2007 Macbook Pro. I was not very familiar with migration, and I realize now I should have done a bit of research before migrating from my iMac (mid 2010) running 10.8.5. I saw the message saying I should update software, but I couldn't figure out how without logging in, and getting on my network with the MacBook. Anyway, I did the migration. My first issue was the MacBook would not let me log in. I finally got it by resetting the password using a 10.6.4 install disc that came with my iMac. The issues I have now are lots of things either won't work, or I have to run them in 32 bit mode. I'm thinking it's because the newer versions residing on my iMac won't work on the older MacBook. I am unable to open iPhoto, and Desktop & Screensaver, Energy Saver in system prefs. I had to run Mail, iCal, and Contacts in 32 bit. I do not have a disc for Lion, but I just ordered it from the Apple Store. I'm wondering if I shoud just start fresh when I get the disc, or is there any fix for my ignorance? Is a new migration out of the question since the Lion is the most I can run on the MacBook while I'm running Mountain Lion on the iMac. I would really appreciate any advise!
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Jeff,
what you’ve bought is the ability to download Lion from the Mac App Store, not a DVD. To be able to access the Mac App Store, you will need to have Mac OS X 10.6.6 or newer installed. The person who sold the MacBook Pro to you should not have included Lion with it, because any version of OS X downloaded from the Mac App Store is non-transferable; he should have included its original two grey installation DVDs, because those are transferable with the MacBook Pro.
Since you’ve now purchased Lion, you will be able to install your purchased version onto your MacBook Pro; however, to associate your MacBook Pro with your Apple ID (and thereby end the association of your MacBook Pro with its former owner), you will need to do a clean reïnstallaton of OS X onto it. To do a clean reïnstallation of OS X, you will need either the original model-specific pair of grey installation DVDs, or the white retail Snow Leopard DVD. It would be best to have both the grey DVDs and the Snow Leopard DVD, since the Snow Leopard DVD does not come with either the iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test for your MacBook Pro, and your model’s grey DVDs will not let you get to Mac OS X 10.6.6 to have access to the Mac App Store.

  • Migrating from an imac to a new macbook pro

Is there a way to select files to migrate? I tried this am and was only able to move all files and not select the ones i wanted. I am interested in only moving my itunes and selected photos. Is this possible? I am using an imac and want to move selected items to my new macbook pro.

    Hi Dennis Rubinson4;
Since you migrating from an iMac G4, with a PPC processor, to a MBP, with an Intel processor it is recommended that you do NOT migrate your applications over but install them on the MBP. Once you have installed the applications then you can use migration assistant to move of the data.

  • Migrating from G5 iMac to new Macbook

I have an assortment of issues that need answers but I'll be as brief as possible.
I have a new Macbook that I wanted to be able to install my iTunes library on. Part of my problem probably stems from my impatients because I didn't wait untill I had the proper cables to set up and migrate from my iMac G5 on the initial start up of the Macbook.
So I created a new user account on the Macbook and did all the updates. Since my iTunes library is on an external hard drive I thought I could just load it from there. It worked but none of my info (ratings, comments, dates, etc..) were there. The next day I picked up an ethernet to ethernet cable and decided to migrate the info using the migration assistant. It worked but then I had two user accounts for myself and a library in each, the one in the new user account was still lacking the track info.
It's not a small library and it was taking up more memory on my Macbook than I thought it should so deleted the library in the new user account, it fixed the memory issue but, the library in my old user account could no longer locate the files. I tried to start over from the begining with little success.
    So here are my questions
    1) How do I get back to square one on the Macbook?
    2) Is it(digital rights management crap)that is causing me trouble or the fact that my files are on an external hard drive that is keeping me from successfully migrating the info?
    3) All I really want is to be able to sync my iTunes library on the Macbook with my Imac iTunes library, the rest of the stuff from the user accounts on the iMac are fine staying where they are. How do I do this?
    Thanks

If I do that will my library be accessable on the macbook without the external hard drive?

  • Migration from G4 iMac to new(ish) Macbook

My daughter is graduating HS (yay!) and going to a great college in the fall (double yay!) and her grandma has given her a nearly-new white MacBook (2.16Ghz) (triple yay!) as a graduation present. Grandma, bless her heart, decided she needed a faster machine. Some people buy sports cars, Grandma likes having the newest and sleekest Mac. We love Grandma!
I am reading up on the steps to help daughter migrate her data from the G4 iMac (which also came from grandma) to the Macbook. It seems fairly simple, and I've done Target Disk before so don't think I can go far wrong but if anyone can check/correct these steps:
    1. Backup everything important from the iMac. (mainly her photo and music libraries as all her work is HS related and she's happy to be rid of it) DONE
    2. MacBook has grandma's account and preferences set, so we should restore from the install disks to get a fresh start. Right?
    3. Once the MacBook is set up with her new account, migrate her stuff over via TDM. I think Migration Assistant won't work due to the disparity between machines.
    4. De-authorize the iMac from our family iTunes account (already maxed out) and authorize the MacBook.
    5. Install any needed software (MS Office & ?) from disks or .dmg.
    6. Either pass iMac on to sibling or completely wipe it and sell it for $10. It has some ailment that is causing me to have to reset the PMU, so I suspect imminent component failure. Excellent time to upgrade!
Thanks for any tips, suggestions, or corrections!

Please read the following about migrating from a PPC to an Intel Mac:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:

    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • HT1338 How do I migrate from G5 iMac (PPC) 10.4.11 to a new Intel iMac?

I am running OSX Tiger 10.4.11 on an iMac G5 PowerPC from 2006. If I upgrade my hardware to a brand new Intel iMac running Mountain Lion as I am considering, how do I best migrate from my old machine to the new, problem free?
I believe that I can't upgrade beyond 10.4.11 on my G5 as it isn't supported so my problem is a dual upgrade/migration one!
I'm also aware that I can't run PPC software on an Intel Mac but I'm really having trouble getting my head around the problem of such a large, combined hardware and OS upgrade! HELP - what do I need to do?? Simple explantions only please!
PS - Apologies if this aimed at the wrong community or it is not presented correctly - it's my first post!
    Many thanks,
    Len57

Thanks Mende1; I know that PPC apps won't function on Intel machines but I can migrate the Universal apps, right? There is such a large gap between Tiger and Mountain Lion - can I still migrate files directly from one to the other taking the Universal apps as well? Sorry, I'm not very computer savvy!

  • Setup Assistant is stuck in migrating from an iMac to an iMac

    Hi all.
Migrating from a 2-yr old iMac to a new iMac.
At Apple's suggestion, used Setup Assistant with a FireWire connection.
Started at 9 PM Friday last night.
Went to bed at 10:30 when it said still 3 hours remaining.
This morning, at 7 AM, it said "About 8 minutes remaining".
Now, almost 1 1/2 hour later, it's still saying "About 8 minutes remaining".
So. It's stuck. What now? Won't be able to reach Apple for another 1/2 hour, and then I'll be at work...
Do I Force Quit Setup Assistant? CAN I Force Quit Setup Assistant. Should I physically pull the FireWire cable?
And if I can, then what? Wipe the disk, re-install OS? Then what? Re-do the same thing (use Setup Assistant)? To eventually get the same result???
    What a pain!
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! (I'll carry the iPad th follow this thread during the day).
P.S. Monday morning, should I sell my shares???

My two cents and maybe someone else will come in to correct me, but I wouldn't trust the transfer even if it appears at first glance to be OK. There might have been Directory corruption on the source computer which was preventing the transfer from completing. You'll have to do a hard shutdown and remove the cable. Then I would first erase and then reinstall the system and bundled software on the new Mac using the two discs that came with the computer. When that's done go back to the source computer, the old Mac, open up Disk Utility to verify and, if needed, repair the Disk. To repair, see "Try Disk Utility."
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
If repairs were needed and the result is successful, then boot back normally and again from Disk Utility, repair Permissions. If no Disk repairs were needed proceed with a Permissions repair booted from the Mac's drive, not the Install Disk.
Start over. You will get a new Setup Assistant and try the transfer now.

  • Migrating from '04 imac (G4, Tiger 10.4.11, 1Gmem) to new iMac '09

I can't get the two migration assistants to connect since they get stuck in an infinite loop. I saw in one post about upgrading the OS on the iMac but I don't even think I can b/c it's so old. What other options do I have for using the migration assistant.

do both imacs have firewire ports? i think they should, although the old one may only have firewire 400. the new one has Firewire 800 only, I just checked. connect them by an appropriate firewire cable and boot the old mac in target mode (reboot it and hold "t" at the chime". then it will show up as an external drive on the new imac and you can migrate using migration assistant wuth the option to migrate from another hard drive or TM backup.

  • Migration from PPC iMac 10.4.11 to Intel iMac OS 10.6.6 w/ Migration Assist

This migration has been far from straightforward and I wonder if someone can give me some tips to sort the remaining problems I am having out.
1 I can't delete old e-mails. The trash can on 10.6.6 is now compartmentalised into 4 trash cans, each one corresponding to one of my active e-mail accounts. In order to delete an e-mail, I have to use the Move to [Trash] command for each individual message in any of the mailboxes I have set up, other than the default Inbox. The delete command does not work!
2 Some calendars I tried to bring across from iCal in 10.4.11 have disappeared. Where are they or where might they have gone?
3 I cannot open my iPhoto library from the old PPC iMac 10.4.11. An error message tells me that I cannot use this version (9.1.1) to open my photos. This is a disaster.
    Thanks in advance.

You're not reading what I posted. You already have iPhoto '11. version 9.1.1 is iPhoto '11. You shouldn't buy iLife '11 as it came preinstalled on your Mac.
Sorry. I had misunderstood, and not realised that iPhoto '11 IS iPhoto 9.1.1 My apologies.
In Library/Events, I have a series of small windows, each of which bears the title of, corresponds to and holds the photographs of each old Album. These windows are NOT in alphabetical order. It would be helpful if I could get them into this order!
An Event is like a Roll in the old iPhoto. It is a grouping of all the photos imported at the same time. You can name events and split them up, also.
OK. Each Event (in new iPhoto) is thus effectively a grouping of all the photos imported at the same time AND appears to be named identically to each Album on the old iPhoto.
In Library/Photos, there seem to be two views:
1 Each old Album title with a downward pointing arrow next to it displays all the pictures in that album.
That sounds like you are talking about Events. If you have Events selected in the Library, then you are looking at Events, not Albums. You can still create Albums and move photos into the Albums. Do you have your old Albums in the Album list?
See above ie each (new) Event seems to correspond to an (old) Album. I do not have my old Albums in the new Album list (or indeed any Albums at all).
It also sometimes displays the WRONG information for the dates on which the photographs within that album were taken. For example, there are 78 photographs in one album that were taken over the course of a week (by me and other friends) and yet the date next to the album title implies the photographs were taken over the course of 4 years. Why?
If what you are looking at are Events, and not your original Albums, then the Events have extra photos in them since they are based on time of import and not your Albums.
Yes, I take your point about the dates.
Or, the dates on some of the photos may be wrong. If the image file does not contain the exif data for the date, it will try to use something else. My guess would be that some of the photos don't have the correct data in the exif data. If you find the ones that are wrong, you can Adjust the Date and Time from the Photos menu. You can also make Batch Changes to multiple photos. Check the help for that.
Some of the dates on the photos may indeed be wrong. I'll see what I can do about this later.
Library/Faces seems pretty straightforward. With 1,511 unnamed faces, it is going to be quite a job to name them all, but at least it is an optional task.
Library/Places has two pictures in it, although I have absolutely why those 2 specific pictures are there, and not others.
Those are the only two photos that had a geo-location tied to the photo (again, in the exif data). Some newer cameras have GPS location data. If your smartphone has location information (likely) it will embed location info in the photos it takes.
Neither my camera nor smartphone provides GPS location data BUT these photographs were taken by someone else using his smartphone which apparently does. Thanks for solving this mystery.
Recent/Last import shows the same views as Library/Photos above.
Yes, that would be the most recent import for this Library.
Recent/Flagged has no photos in it.
You didn't flag any photos, so none are in there.
Trash has no photos in it.
    I hope that's a good thing.
Yes, that's fine. I haven't deleted any of the imported photos yet.
So I think I just need help with how to get the Albums, whether in Library/Events or Library Photos, or in Recent/Last import into
View menu, Sort command. Note that each selection in the Library has its own sort options.
In Library/Events, I used View/Sort Events 'By Title' and this has alphabetised the Events perfectly. Brilliant. Thanks again.
However, each (new) Event ie group of photos imported at any one time, is still named with, and corresponds to the title of an (old) Album.
I have created a single (new) Album while having a single (new) Event open. This magically transferred all the photographs from that Event to the Album. Problem solved easily.
The latter solution b) would be particularly useful as I find pictures most easily in their correctly named and alphabetised albums and not by date. I have not yet discovered any way to drag the imported old albums into alphabetical order, perhaps because they appear to have been imported as a single, for some intents and purposes but not others, block.
    View>Sort Events>Manually.
PS I have started to read around this subject on the forums...there seems to be a lot of frustration on the general issue of migration of iPhoto from 10.4.11 to 10.6.6...but at least I was lucky enough to have a complete back up of ALL my pictures from the old PPC iMac.
A lot has changed since 10.4 and the version of iPhoto you used. You missed all the incremental changes as they occurred, so you are now trying to make sense of a lot of changes.
    Right.
I think I like the Event structure better than using Albums; however, you can still use Albums like you did before, you'll just need to recreate them if you want to use that method. I'm sure there are reasons for using Albums, but I haven't played with it enough to know when/why.
I see now that Events are indeed almost alternatives to Albums and I will also just have to get used to using one or the other or both. But in any case, this seems solved now, thanks again to your tips.
Printing is a bit different. You might want to play with that a little before you need to print something in a hurry.
    I'll get there.
I am still having some problems with iCal and Mail but will post them again in separate forums so as to be able to mark this iPhoto topic as solved.

  • Migration from broken iMac to new iMac

I have a 24" early 2009 iMac with Leopard that has a faulty screen. The computer will boot into OSX but I can't see anything on the main display (not even the Apple logo when booting).
I have a replacement 27" iMac with Snow Leopard coming tomorrow and I want to migrate everything from the old one to the new one. However, I need to know if I will need to see the screen on the old iMac or if I can do this without it? Specifically, if I use the Migration Assistant will I need to see anything on the old iMac?
If I can't use the Migration Assistant, can I use the Firewire transfer mode? I believe if I hold down T on the old iMac, it should put it into Firewise transfer mode and then I'd see it as a drive on my new iMac?
Any other suggestions? Preferably, I'd like to migrate. But the second-best option would be to transfer files manually from the old to new.
    Thanks!

You should be able to start up the older iMac in FireWire Target Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
if it is working, except for the screen. If you then connect the older iMac to the new one using a FireWire cable, the older iMac's hard drive should appear on the Desktop of the new iMac. You can then use Migration Assistant or transfer the data manually using Finder.

  • Should I restart the migration from my iMac to my new MacBook Pro?

    Hi everyone,
I've been a Mac user for many years now but I'm stuck with my current situation.
I've just received my new MacBook Pro 13" 2.4Ghz and it's the first Mac I've owned for many years without Firewire. In the past transferring everything to a new Mac was simple but with this current migration I'm stuck.
My MBP is connected to my iMac via my wifi network and everything seemed to be going to plan, albeit with a long estimated completion time (88 hours & 33 minutes for I guess approximately 200 or so gig of data). Now I'm over 24 hours into the migration and both computers are saying the same message ("Transferring documents for the user Elliot Pearson") and still with the 88 hour remaining time. The 'candystripe' bar is still moving on both but there's no way of seeing if anything is actually happening.
What I want to know is whether it is worth, or indeed dangerous to, disconnect the transfer and start again potentially leaving incomplete or corrupted files. If the above seems normal and I just have to wait it out then I don't want to have to start again from scratch!
Is it possible to connect the two via ethernet to do the transfer as I only remember being given the option for wifi which will inevitably be slower.
Any advice you can give me will be much appreciated!
    Elliot

The MBP has a Firewire port. There's no need to migrate over a network nor would I recommend it.
Use Target Disk Mode - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. Boot the computer from which you are migrating into TDM. Boot the MBP normally after which you should find the hard drive icon for the other computer on the Desktop. Open Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder, select "Another drive" as the source then select the drive of the iMac.
You can abort the transfer which will mainly leave the MBP in an unknown state for what has already been migrated. In this case I would simply locate the /Users/ folder and delete whatever is in there so you can start fresh with the migration.
Of course you can leave everything alone until it's completed. I don't know how many GBs you are migrating, but using wireless is extremely slow - even at 802.11n speed it's 1/4 the speed of a USB drive connected directly.
