Migration from G5 to Xserve, 10.3 server to 10.4 server

I am planning a move from a dp G5 tower to a newer Xserve G5, and migrating the 10.3 server to the new 10.4 server. This is our main DNS, mail, web, and ftp server. It is currently running 10.3.8 and running a Netnfo db. I am looking for some strategy tips and practical suggestions.
I have read the migration guide. And while it is excellent, it is lacking in some crucial details. It is hard to believe that it doesn't mention changing IPs with changeip or networksetup, or deal with scenarios like mine. I will reread it a few more time to better prepare for this move. But I ask here, so that I may get a few ideas or tips.
Should I rebuild the 10.4 Server/ xserve G5 with the current servers IP and copy all the data, users and settings, then turn off the old then turn on the new? Or should I build it with a new IP, move data, test it, then changeip?
Or should I set it up as a secondary mail server and change the settings with our domain name registrar reflects the secondary mail server, then turn off the old one?
I know you're supposed to upgrade to 10.3.9 first, but 10.3.8 users do seem to import fine into 10.4.8 (in my tests). Anything really broken there?
I guess my concern are rooted in taking down a live working server, and establishing the safest way to bring up a new server which is fully functioning mail, web and dns. And I want chocolate ice cream too.
Thanks.

Yes. The OD schema changes from 10.3 to 10.4, and the upgrade
to 10.3.9 gets the OD schema into condition for migration to
10.4.x. That's the reason for that step.
Good details about the migration are given on

It's probably easier not to do the changeip flip, if you can
do that. Details at afp548.com

I assume you mean iplanet calendar server 5.1.1 to the latest calendar server (6.3). If so, I suggest you start by reading through the calendar server admin guide which goes through the steps involved and tools to use to migrate from 5.1.1 onto calendar server 6.3.

  • Best practices for migrating from 10.4 XServe to 10.5 XServe

    Hi--
Suggestions welcomed for the following scenario. I have an almost 3-year-old XServe G5, running OS X Server 10.4.11. I have a brand new XServe Xeon on order, which of course will come with Server 10.5.(1).
The following are the critical services running on my current XServe:
    --An Open Directory database with approximately 200 users;
    --Around 50 file shares
--The data itself stored in the shared folders
What is the best way to migrate my Open Directory information from old to new? I know that a 10.5 server cannot be a replica for a 10.4 OD master.
I know that I can use the password export instructions provided on AFP548, or at least I know I could use them in 10.4. Has anyone successfully exported users/passwords from 10.4 and imported them into 10.5?
I think I could install 10.4.11 on the new XServe, make it an OD Replica, promote it to Master, take the old Master offline, then upgrade the new XServe to 10.5.
Alternately, I could clone my current server, then upgrade it to 10.5, make the new one a replica, then promote, etc. I will eventually want to get the old server on 10.5, as its intended role is to be a Time Machine Server.
Suggestions welcomed. Should I just stick with 10.4 for now, rolling back the new server and waiting on 10.5 for a few months? My preference would be to get both of these servers on 10.5 during the downtime for the migration, but I'm open to new ideas.
Will migrating the Open Directory info also migrate the shares? In other words, if I set up a folder structure on the new server identical to the old, and bring the data over, will I have to recreate my shares and their respective permissions?
    Thanks in advance.
    Eric

I would recommend shutting off mail services and then booting your server on another drive and, using Carbon Copy Cloner, copy the disk to the new server. Disconnect the old server from the network, connect the new server and then boot it up and immediately start an upgrade on the new server to 10.5.0 then 10.5.1. If it fails, revert to the old before starting mail services.
I did that upgrading an old sawtooth 10.4.11 to a mini with 10.5.1 and it went well except for all the virtual hosts for web sites. Still have not solved that one - just did the upgrade this weekend.

  • Migration from MS Exchange 2003 to Mavericks Server

Can anyone recommend a migration path from MS Exchange 2003 to OS X Mavericks Server? The key features to be migrated and used with the new server are: email, contacts, calendar, group tasks management, file sharing.
Also, any hardware recommendation? Is Mac mini enough for a group of about 6-8 other Macs or could we benefit from the new Mac Pro? Perhaps an iMac (with a Fusion Drive)?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't think you know the limitations — Exchange Server provides rather more than what Postfix and Dovecot do.
This is a generic Exchange Server to Postfix/Dovecot migration, which — in conjunction with the imapsync option — might find some other discussions.
For migrating from Exchange Server itself, AFAIK, no, there are no packaged tools for that available.   Tools such as imapsync can be used to migrate mail among imap servers, which can be an option here once imap is enabled on the Exchange Server, and once you know (or reset) all the passwords.  Or you can select all and then drag and drop the messages.
Slightly closer to Exchange Server in capabilities are the Zimbra and Kerio products.  Zimbra has migration tools, IIRC.
FWIW, please do not thread-jack, it just confuses the discussions — or at least it usually just ends up confusing readers.  This is a very different question from the original, and should be its own separate thread.

  • Migrating from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion Server

Hi all.  I kinda drop in and out of this forum, mostly when I've got a puzzler that I can't figure out.  My journey from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion was a little slow.  I tried to make the transition from Snow Leopard to Lion and failed, but this time I made it and I thought I'd share a little scratchpad post I wrote to document what I did.  Mostly this is about adding back a few things that I really need.  Here's the list of stuff that I added back:
    Firewall management (IceFloor)
    MySQL
Webmail, email filtering rules and email aliases (RoundCube)
"Group" emails (short, multi-recipient email exploders)
    Mailing lists (Mailman)
I also dramatically improved reliability by adding a lot of memory, and doing nightly-restarts of the machine.
Here's a link to the post
         http://www.haven2.com/index.php/archives/migrating-from-snow-leopard-server-to-o sx-server-mountain-lion
I'm happy to report that the new server has been running for a month or so and all seems fine.  Whew.  A long journey.  Thanks to all of you who posted things that helped me along the way.  Hopefully this will return the favor.

Moving from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion means first installing the client (non-Server) version of Mountain Lion and then install Server.app this means that for at least part of the process you will not be running DNS, DHCP or Open Directory.
If you are going to end up using the same DNS name and IP address after the change then an approach you could follow would be as follows.
    Destroy any Open Directory replicas
Archive your Open Directory Master (to make a backup)
Note down your DNS records in case they get messed up
Export via Workgroup Manager your users, and groups (you might not need this but better safe than sorry), make sure you do not include the diradmin account
Keep a full back of the server (you should always have backups)
Note down your DHCP server settings in case they get messed up
Note down any other service settings
    Install Mountain Lion
    Install Server.app
Install Workgroup Manager (extra free download)
    Run Server.app
Make sure settings for services are as much as possible the same as before
If your lucky that may be all you need to do, otherwise...
Restore Open Directory archive, if your lucky that will be all you need to do, otherwise...
    Make new Open Directory Master
    Run Workgroup Manager
Import users and groups you previously exported
You will then have to set passwords for each user as these are not preserved via Workgroup Manager export
When I did this, I was also being forced to change all my IP addresses so I had no choice but to use Workgroup Manager to export and import accounts.

You'll have to skip the authAuthority entries. One of them is for the password server, where Apple stores passwords, and the other obviously is for Kerberos. I think I read somewhere that you can actually use the userPassword: field if you put a plaintext password in there. I'd be interested to know if {crypt} or {md5} would work, like they do in regular OpenLDAP deployments.
Once you have the users imported into OpenDirectory, you can create the password server and Kerberos entries using the Server Admin tool, although this might require changing the password.
As for email, are you already using a recent version of Cyrus IMAP? If so, you just need to copy the files over (after importing users). If not, there are scripts floating around that can convert email from other systems to Cyrus.
    Cheers

  • Package migration from SSIS 2008 R2 to SQL server 2012

    hi guys:
My company has decided to use Sql server 2012 for the database service, Integration service as well as analysis service
The first question is which tool I should install to run packages ? in SQL Server 2008 R2, I've installed BIDS which is inside the disk.
Also do I need to install any visual studio tools? I was under the impression that the BIDS 2008 was using kinda shell visual studio.

    Hi cat_ca,
To develop package in SQL Server 2012 Integration Services, we use the SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT 2012) which can be installed from the SQL Server 2012 install media. The SSDT 2012 use Visual Studio 2010 shell by default and can be integrated into Visual
Studio 2010. By installing SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012, we can also integrate SSDT 2012 into Visual Studio 2012. However, SSDT 2012 cannot be integrated into Visual Studio 2013. As far as I know, the SSDT 2014 released
in SQL Server 2014 RTM will use the Visual Studio 2013 shell and can be integrated into Visual Studio 2013.

  • Migrating from ingres 6.4 to sql server

    Hi,
I’m looking at exporting ingress 6.4 database data running on Solaris 10 to MS SQL server 2008R2 since we are decommissioning the old ingres 6.4 databases.
Currently I am successful at transferring data from ingres 9.2 databases to sql server using the ingress 9.2 client component which I installed on a windows sql server box. I configured the vnode info using ingres network utility (netutil).
However, I have had no success connecting to ingres 6.4 using netutil. Can anyone help point me in the right direction. Might guess is the vnode setup on Ingres is the problem but I do not know what commands to run to check.
Basically I'm using SQL import wizard to import the data using Ingres ODBC drivers.
    Thanks,
    Thong

    Hi w,
We need to verify setting up a full client Ingres installation and configuring Net on both the client and server before exporting ingress 6.4 database data to SQL server.
If using the netutil to set up general access, we should create a virtual node with virtual node name, login/password and connection data.
In addition, if necessary, on the server, use netutil's test menu option to see if the connection works. If it does, you can access a remote database in the following manner:
    $ sql <virtual node name>::<database name>
There is one article about introduction Ingres, we can review this topics.

  • Migrating FROM Gmail to 10.6 Mail server

I am in the process of setting up a new 10.6 Server to be used for internal Mail, iChat, iCal, Wiki, & File Sharing. We are currently using Gmail for all email.
Can anyone recommend the best way to move all current emails in each account on Gmail to the SL Server that I am setting up possibly in a manner that involves as little downtime as possible?
Each user (around 45 of them) with the exception of five Mac users in the company who use Mail, are all using Gmail's web interface. I have thought about installing an email client (all using win xp or vista) using IMAP and DL all emails to their computer, but this leaves the only copy of that email on that computer system, and would be a pain when their station has to be switched out for any reason to move the emails to the new system. Recommendations?
    L Nail

That you're asking this question is somewhat concerning.
Depending on the tool (and in the typical case), you're transferring messages directly from one mail server to another mail server.
Actually, since this is the first Mac OS X server, and mail server at that matter, that I have set up, I do believe that this is a valid question, and shouldn't be alarming one bit. I have not yet turned on the mail server, nor have I begun to delve into all of the documentation yet, as the mail server is the last part to implement.
Presuming imapsync, you're using a tool that pretends to be a mail client to two different mail servers in parallel; it pulls down messages from one and synchronizes those messages directly to another server.
For another document on the imapsync tool, here is the [imapsync readme|http://www.linux-france.org/prj/imapsync/README] via [Freshmeat|http://freshmeat.net/projects/imapsync>
Thank you for the direction to some more documentation on imapsync!

  • Migration from 2007-2013 - Installation of 2010 server?

We have Exchange 2007 installed currently (SP3, latest UR). I installed Exchange 2013 in preparation for migration, started working on configuration. After doing some digging, we realized we don't have any licensing for 2013 (miscommunication). The obvious
solution is to purchase licensing for 2013, but the cost is an issue.
First questions: we do have licensing for 2010. Is there any way we can install Exchange 2010? Everything I'm reading says no, but would like confirmation. 2010 was never installed in the environment.
Second question: If I cannot install 2010, can I install a second 2007 server after 2013 has been installed (newer OS)? Safely uninstall 2013?
    Thanks!

  • Problem migrating from 10.5 to 10.6 server

I am moving my Server from a Mac Mini Running 10.5 (server) to a New Mac Mini with Snow Leopard server (10.6.2) pre-installed.
Everything seemed to have copied over to the new server correctly, but I seem to have a problem when trying to access my web pages on the new server.
The problem is that instead of the web page being displayed in the browser it is transmitted as a download file (to my download folder).
It doesn't matter if the file is HTML or PHP the file is transmitted as a download instead of being executed and displayed by the browser.
Any idea what is causing this problem ?
