Migration from macbook pro

I want to transfer my Macbook Pro info to a MacBook Air.
1-MacBook Air does not have Firewire
2-I do not have the ethernet adapter
Is my only option to use WiFi?
Isn't too slow and unreliable?

I am going to vote here for use of the Time Machine backup. I just migrated everything from an iMac to a new Macbook Air, and in preparation I had purchased the little USB-ethernet adaptor. But when carefully following the steps for Migration Assistant (was actually doing this with Setup Assistant) using an ethernet cable between the two machines, the process just seemed to get stuck fairly early on (before even the menu of choices of what to migrate came up). I called Apple Care and they urged me to use the Time Machine backup instead. Luckily the Time Machine backup disk had both firewire and USB 2 ports, so I used the USB 2 connection and the Migration/Setup Assistant ran quite quickly, maybe 45 minutes or so to migrate about 100 Megabytes.
If you don't have a Time Machine backup (seems like everyone should have one of those), I suggest you purchase a 500-MB or 1-TB low cost external USB drive (under $100, some on sale as low as $50) and do the Time Machine backup and use it to migrate to the new system. If your older computer is running 10.4, then Time Machine is not available but you can download a free version of SuperDuper, clone the older computer's hard drive, and then use that clone/backup to migrate to the new machine. Doing the initial backup with either of these methods is likely to take on the order of an hour for each 150 Megabytes being backed up.

Migration from Macbook Pro, settings are macbook pro

I have migrated my data from Macbook Pro Retina using migration assistance. During the process I didn't allow it to override my current profile, or something. Now when I use terminal, it says
Name-Macbook-Pro:~ name $
shouldn't it say
Name-Mac-Mini:~ name $
instead?
Also, when I'm going into my apple store, it has applications for enhancing macbook pro retina experience. How do I change all this?

Nevermind, I found out that it was because my Device's name was changed, and in order to change that, just go to shared folder in the preferences and it can be changed there.

HT4889 Migrate from MacBook Pro to external hard drive

I have a MacBook Pro with no video, external monitor won't work, it's the nvdia chip. Before working on it, I want to back up the Apps, Settings etc. I have the data backed up. I tried to migrate to my mac mini but it doesn't have enough space so I thought I could migrate to my external hard drive, but I can't see the external... Here are my 3 inital questions:

I have a old macbook pro running tiger on it, and I recently purchased a macbook air.
I want to use setup migration so migrate all my settings, applications, etc to the new macbook air.
However, both laptops don't have firewire port.
I do not have a time machine backup for the Tiger. (does it even have time machine for Tiger?)
Please let me know how I can migrate from pro to air.
I really want to avoid manually migrating.

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries

In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.

OS X Lion: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:
MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)- What to do if migration is unsuccessful;
MacBook Air- Migration Tips and Tricks;
MacBook Air- Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and wireless 802.11n networks.
Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)

Migration from MacBook Pro to MacBook Pro

I hope I'm in the right forum as this concerns both Tiger & Leopard. I just got my new Leopard-running Macbook pro. My current Macbook pro is running Tiger. I launched the migration assistant on the Leopard machine & all went well until I got the instructions to do the same on the other machine but instead of "to this mac" I was to select "from this mac" Unfortunately that option didn't come up, only "to this mac" or "to another volume" on this mac."
Could it be because I'm using an ethernet cable? The Tiger macs sees the Leopard on the desktop. I'm resorting to ethernet because I'm waiting for my 9-6 firewire cable to arrive.
Your comments would be most appreciated.

I'm not sure how it works when Networked via Ethernet, never used that method, only with the old one in Target Mode via FW cable.
Sorry I can't really help on your question, but I'm thinking from the info you give, that Tiger's MA doesn't understand Leopards MA in this situation, looks like Tiger's MA wants to do the Migrating, which wouldn't be good at all.
I'd wait for the FW cable and just use the Tiger Mac in Target Mode, which Leopard's MA choice will then be from another HD on this Mac...

Problems migrating from MacBook Pro to MB Air

I'm migrating from a MacBook Pro to a MB Air. Both run OS X 10.7.5. But Migration Assistants are different versions (4.1.2.vs. 1.0.1), and the machines cannot seem to communicate via ethernet. Must I upgrade the older machine to a newer version of Migration Assisatnt? If so, how? (Cannot find a link to download and software updater says I'm current.)

Having trouble migrating from macbook Pro to macbook Air?

Apple has kind of messed up with migration from older laptops to Macbook Air. With 140 GB to transfer onto my new Macbook Air, I took a big gulp when my new Air told me casually that it would take about 36 hours to migrate my stuff from my Pro to the new Air over the wireless network. OK, so I have a slow network, sue me. Apple's technical help was no help, and that's getting pretty common. The solution? A data transfer USB cable (PCMACLINK2 USB to USB Data Transfer Cable for Windows and Mac, Startech). A simple USB-USB connection and data transfer rates of around 480 MBS. I think we are good to go. BTW, why didn't Apple release a Firewire/Thunderbolt dongle? Making a new set of dongles for every new Mac seems to be de rigeur these days, so why not add one more? Oh, and Apple doesn't seem to carry a data transfer cable. FAIL!

I've been pondering getting a Macbook Air but I want to find out if I can copy over Endnote X4 and Office from my Macbook Pro (Snow Leopard) to a new Macbook Air (Lion).
Is it just a matter of drag and drop or using Migrate Assistant or is there anything to worry about between different Macbooks, different versions of OS or some restriction on copying Apps?
Also, assuming a migration is possible, can I just use my Timemachine external drive or should I buy a cable instead?

Migration from MacBook Pro to new iMac didn't bring iWeb

I recently bought an iMac and migrated all, or at least I thought all, of the programs and info from my MacBook Pro onto it, but when I open iWeb on the iMac it wants me to make a new website and has none of the info from the one that already exists.
Can anyone help with this problem?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Go to the your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder on your MacBook Pro and move the Domain.sites2 file there to the same folder on your iMac, replacing the domain file that might be there. That file is what iWeb needs to manage your site.

What cable do I need in order to migrate from Macbook Pro (December 2008) to the new Macbook Pro with Retina display?

It's driving me crazy; I have a firewire, but it isn't compatible with the ports on the new macbook pro with retina display.

Fast migration from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air

I have ordered a MacBook Air and will migrate from my battered MBP15 mid-2009. I understand the process and software sides well but I have two hardware questions:
1) Migrating to an SSD
Folk wisdom when migrating to a spinning hard disk is to start with applications because they will install on hte outside of the disk first and will therefore read faster. Obviously SSD not being a spinning device this doesn't apply but are there similar tips to extract maximum performance from an SSD?
2) Using Thunderbolt on the MBA
I cannot use the MBA's ethernet/USB adapter because my USB port is broken on the MBP15. I have looked everywhere for Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 or even 400 adapters and none are for sale (even if Apple claims they are as at teh bottom of this page ...
So I'm stuck using over the air migration... One thing I have thought about can be as follows:
- Start up MBP15 in T mode
- Wire it to a FW800 drive with multiple interfaces
- Hook the drive to the MBA. With a bit of luck both volumes should mount
Anybody has used something similar? Other ideas?

I was thinking of doing a clean install as I have not done one for almost 10 years! I have issues of general speed, probably lots of junk files and specifically Safari bringing my machine to a complete stop (uninstalling/reinstalling has done nothing). It would obviously be faster to use setup assistant first to install the apps and then do a manual migration of my user files.
How confident should I be that the apps migration will be 'clean' and that a lot of the garbage will be left behind?
Also, what are those Gigs of 'other files' which are neither apps nor user data? - Obviously fonts, but what else? Worth migrating or leave behind (and then search manually)?
I am asking because I did a true clean install last month and it took about a week until I had full confidence that nothing had been missed...

Migrate from Macbook Pro to Macbook Pro

I have an existing Macbook w/ 120Gb HD. Always running out of space. Picked up a slightly used Macbook Pro w/ 500 Gb HD and I want to migrate to the new machine. Does anyone know of the best procedure to follow. I have my existing Macbook backed up on an external HD w/ Time Machine and I'm pretty sure I can figure out how to perform a multi-step data migration using the external HD if I could find the instructions to follow.

To start off on the right foot I would install a fresh OS on the used Mac.
It is recommended however, on the first boot of your "new used Mac" to take advantage of the SetUp Assistant and use firewire to connect your old mac and your "new Mac" for trouble free transfer of all user files/ applications/ etc.

Air is dead after migrating from Macbook Pro Maverick via time machine

I backed up my Macbook Pro on Time Machine. I then used setup assistant on new Macbook Air. Everything went great with transfer, but upon restart, I get slight light on screen, but no apple, icon, and resetting of any form does not work. No sound. Help!

Migrated from MacBook Pro to new iMac. I have no address book application.

I had an address book app before the migration but do not have one that will work. The icon is not the normal app icon but a generic one like Audio Recorder's icon. I try to open but it won't open.
If I go to Mail I can open and view all addresses there but only within Mail, however iCalc won't open it.
How do I get it back or re-install without having to restore?

Did you migrate the app from Time Machine? Reinstall it.
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
The reference to NovaMedia is that there is the remanant of an older app in there somewhere that won't run on 10.7
