Migration from Mavericks to mountain lion?

Hi,
Apple had to replace my dead hard drive (Macbook pro). Then they reinstalled Mavericks while I was on Mountain lion previously.
I used Migration Assistant to transfer profile from my iMAC (Mountain Lion 10.8.5) to my Macbook Pro (with new hard drive and Mavericks 10.9.2). Although my profile has been installed on my refreshed macbook pro, it is still using Mavericks and not Mountain lion as I expected. Is there anything that I can do to transfer my iMAC to my Macbook pro (and overwrite MAvericks)?

You can only roll back as far as the OS that your computer shipped with. If the replacement system is one that would have shipped with Mav's that is as far back as you can go. This is likely the situation.
You can always try and re-install Mountain Lion if you'd like by completely erasing your Macintosh HD and using a a USB installer with Mountain Lion: http://www.macrumors.com/2012/07/25/create-a-bootable-mountain-lion-usb-key-inst aller/
but even if that is possible, which it may not be on that system, it may cause more issues than it is worth.
Is there a reason you do not want to use Mavericks?

Downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion

I am considering to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion, and understand I would loose the maps app and some features... but is it worth it it so I dont have to continuously reboot my mac, so I can use a program every time ?
The problems I am having with mavericks, even when I have done a few tweaks , is that after running a few programs such as mail, safari, garageband first and then loading photobooth... photobooth or any video app tends to lag , and the video is recorded lagging. A reboot fixes this if i start the program after reboot and not run any programs before.
Another issue is when I am doing my artwork, drawing in photoshop or manga studio... the pen tablet begins to lag as well, so I would have to save my work, reboot and then continue working until Mavericks starts misbehaving again.
This mac had its drive wipped clean before It became my personal mac, and I requested Mountain Lion, since I prefered it, but Mavericks was installed.
I dont mind Mavericks... its just this rebooting to fix or refresh system... is getting annoying when I need to get some artwork done.

HT4889 Is it possible to migrate from Tiger to Mountain Lion????

It seems that the Mountain Lion migration assistant on a MacBook Air does not see an attached iBook G4 via thunderbolt/firewire as valid volume. For Lion there is an explanation, that it only works via Firewire. What about Mountain Lion? I think the migration assistant should be able to migrate from any ancient OS X version...

No, you cannot migrate directly from Tiger to Mountain Lion as described in HT4889 - Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant are both broken in 10.8.2 and the procedure in HT4889 does not work.
What you can do is either upgrade your iBook G4 to Leopard and then migrate from Leopard to Mountain Lion, or migrate from Tiger to another machine running Leopard/Snow Leopard/Lion and then to your new machine running Mountain Lion.
In theory it is still possible to purchase OS X Leopard directly from Apple as a special order if you call them or something like that. Don't pay $200 to scammers on eBay, please!!
The nice thing about using Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant is that it really seems to do a good job of migrating contacts/calendar/email and everything else, although obviously you will need to replace all of your old PowerPC apps.

My iMac (Intel) is older and Apple told me this model doesn't handle Mavericks well, recommended I step back to Mountain Lion, which was where Aperture was originally used. Aperture was upgraded when I installed Mavericks, need to go back to older version. How?

I'm extremely disappointed and annoyed with Mavericks. Mail isn't working and also having problems with my two additional displays. System is so sluggish I can't accomplish anything. How do I revert from Mavericks to Mountain Lion? Thanks!

Mavericks is extremely zippy I suspect you either have a corrupt install, need to re-index spotlight or had an unstable install of ML to begin with. Once you have updated to Mavericks unless you have a bootable clone with ML still on it you will have to troubleshoot Mavericks until you have it right.
However my recommendation is you should probably post on the Mavericks forum and look for solutions there.

Switch back from Mavericks to Mountain Lion

I have tried to switch back from Mavericks to Mountain Lion, due to the battery drain problem, following the steps included in the tutorial https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6162
The problem is that when I format the HD and I click on 'Install' it appears a big screen which says 'Install Mavericks". I want to install Mountain Lion (that I have in the pendrive), or at least Lion, but I am unable to do that, there is no option to choose any other operating system. Is there a way to rollback to any previous system?
If not, would it be possible to extract the HD from the computer, format it completely (including the recovery partition) in another computer, install it again in the original computer and perform a clean install from my pendrive?
I have no external drive with Time Machine or similar.

If you have got a Time Machine backup created in OS X Mountain Lion, connect the external drive with the backup, hold the Option key while your computer is starting and choose the external drive. Then, select the option to restore the Time Machine backup and follow the steps. Note that your hard drive will be erased.
If your Mac came with Lion or Mountain Lion, you can use Internet Recovery by holding down Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting up. Use Disk Utility to erase the hard drive and reinstall OS X or restore the backup

Revert from Mavericks to Mountain Lion?

Regrettabily, I have installed Mavericks and then found out from Apple tech support that it doesn't allow USB syncronization with my iPhone or iPad; only through iCloud. I have never syncronized my contacts with any cloud service and don't want to. So, I'm stuck with an OS that doesn't allow integration of my devices locally. Does anyone know how I can revert back to Mountain Lion? I can't believe Apple has done this to its users. I use iCloud for other things, but this should be MY choice, not Apple's. At least not without them first warning their users before installing. I'm very disappointed and have told all my acquaintances to avoid Mavericks. If anyone has a solution, I would appreciate assistance.

I have an iPhone 4S running iOS 7.0.3 and Mavericks 10.9. on my Mac Pro. I have no trouble at all syncing between the two using the iPhone's USB cord and iTunes. I'm surprised that Apple would tell you otherwise. i don't have an iPad and that may be the problem, but I don't know it.
However, I'm in the process of reverting from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion due to the many malfunctions in my work flow that are caused by Mavericks. I usually don't migrate to the next great OS until it reaches at lease the 10.9.3 stage, but this time I suckered and I'm paying for it. I'm not an enthusiastic beta tester and I've learned my lesson.

Recently went in to the Genius bar to pay to fix some aesthetic physical damage on my 2010 Macbook (Applecare expired) and while I was there I asked about some slowness I'd been experiencing but couldn't explain. My helper recommended that I switch from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion due to the amount of memory required by Mavericks. I did that, and it did fix the slowness issue, but now I'm not able to open my saved documents or use Pages. May be affecting other applications too those just happen to be what I use most frequently.
When I try to open a document it says I need "a newer version of Pages" but I apparently cannot run the newer version of Pages because it says it requires 10.9 or later.
Help, please? I really need access to my documents.

Try one of these programs. Then save in another format and attempt to open in Pages.

Should I downgrade from Maverick to Mountain Lion 10.8?

Your comments are welcome regarding my concern about Maverick downgrading to Mounain Lion. here's my case.
I just upgraded to Maverick and now I notice that as per my temperature monitor app it shows a high readings ranging from 70-85 C above.
(MPlayer, MSWord, MSExe, Safari are all open) Im doing this always and not having this reading not until I upgrade my OSX to Maverick.
I am not comfortable on high temp in my unit because as per my understanding that will speed up the wear and tear of the machine.
I'm also having a suspicion if my Temperature Monitor might not showing the right reading because maybe its not compatible to the new OSX.
But I feel that Maverick has lot's of hidden issues for old MBP's like me (btw I'm using 2011 15 inch) so I am now thinking to downgrade to 10.8 Mt. Lion
My follow-up question is how to do that? Please share some links to guide me.
But if this issue can be fix I will stay using Mavericks.

Before giving up on Mav's "which is actually pretty great for laptops", do a little housekeeping.
1) look at activity monitor and see if something is using a bunch of CPU, things like mdworker and the like are reindexing your drive which can take hours. If it is something else, seek help for that.
2) repair permissions after upgrading so make sure system file access is not impaired
3) boot in safe mode at least once to flush dynamic linker cache (hold shift key at startup chime, when you get to the login prompt, just reboot again but in a normal fashion).
4) reset PRAM (hold command-R-Opt-P at startup chime)
5) let your TM backup have the time it needs to finish, the first time after an upgrade can be long, just give it time
If after a day or two you still dislike Mav's, then you can reformat your SDD and reinstall ML. If TM has been updated by Mav's then use a ML clone to bring over settings, data, & apps. I have tried this and it works. I have not tried to migrate from a Mav's updated TM from a ML install. That seems a bit problematic to me but apple may have made provisions for this to work...I don't know.

Migrating from SnowLeopard to Mountain Lion does not start

Just got a brand new 15"MacBook Pro Retina running Mountain Lion.
First thing I tried to do after selecting language and keyboard was to try to migrate everything from my 15" MacBookPro running Snow Leopard but the process does not even start
After connecting both via ethernet cable, the computers recongnized each other, and I started the process but it has been showing "Preparing to transfer user documents for more than 4 hours"
No progress bar, no expected time for completion. nothing at all
Any suggestions on what to do?

Hello. I'm one of the unlucky owners of Macbook Retina 15" Mid 2012. I was very satisfied with this computer, everything was great, untill I installed OS X Mavericks. My computer started to have GPU Panics all the time under some "heavier" usage like watching long videos on YouTube. I googled this problem and then I saw that I wasn't the only one, many people had problems after upgrading to Mavericks. I also read that downgrading to Mountain Lion solves the problem, but after the Internet Recovery update, when you are restoring your mac, it restores as Mavericks. I read Apple instruction how to revert os x, but it requires Time Machine backup from Mountain Lion, I already downloaded ML Installer from AppStore but I don't know how to install it.

If you have a Mountain Lion installer application then you can downgrade, but you will have to erase the drive. You should try backing up your Home folder in advance so you could at least restore your data. You will need to reinstall any third-party applications.
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
   2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
            3. Use DiskMaker X to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.
Use your new installer flash drive to boot the computer. Boot by doing:
Boot Using OPTION key:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
      "OPTION" key.
3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
4. Select the disk icon for the USB flash drive.
5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. From Mavericks to Mountain Lion - iLife and iWorks

My MacBook Pro Retina came with Mountail Lion installed, I upgraded to Mavericks and also upgraded iWork and iLife to the new versions that came out at the same time. If I was to wipe my mac and reinstall Mountail Lion, will I be able to download the previous versions of iWork and iLife which were compatable with Montain Lion.

Yes. I have done this with a 2012 Mac Mini that came with OS X Mountain Lion and a 2012 MBP Retina that came with OS X Lion; then upgraded to ML. On the Retina, I used a USB thumb drive with ML to reinstall.
For your system:
Boot into Internet Recovery (command+option+R) which boots to Apple's server and loads their Recovery HD.
Erase your Macintosh HD then Reinstall OS X which will reinstall ML.
After installation and during Setup, make sure you enter the same Apple ID/password you used when you Accepted your iLife apps and purchased your iWork apps (assuming you purchased these from the App Store).
Log into the App Store and you should see under the Purchase tab your iWork and iLife apps to download. These will be the non-Mavericks versions.

I recently ordered my first Mac, a 15inch rMBP, however I was disappointed to find out several CAD applications I use regularly are not supported at this time.
My MBP will ship with Mavericks already installed, is there a straightforward way for me to downgrade to Mountain Lion right from the start?
I will upgrade in a few months once third party devs catch up, so I wouldnt mind rebooting to a Mavericks default by that point.. I don't want to lose the free iWork/iLife etc.
If someone could shed a little light onto the matter I would appreciate it.

With some historical exceptions, it usually is not possible to boot a mac with any version of OS X older then the version it shipped with.
You may find that you simply cannot boot anything older than OS X 10.9 on a brand new machine, or if it does boot with an older version, the system will be unstable - see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2186
<edit> you might be better to think of running a virtual machine in Mavericks to run an older version of OS X.

Downgrading from Mavericks to Mountain Lion

So currently I'm not satisfied with having Mavericks OS X on my macbook, particularly because of the gradually decreasing disk space that happens each time I turn on my macbook. I've attempted to clear caches like the IconServices in order to make space, but more space is gradually depleted, especially when I use third-party software like VueScan, which I find essential to my lifestyle. I wish to downgrade from Mavericks back to the Mountain Lion OS I initially had when I received macbook. Before I do, I need to ask the following:
1) Will I need to buy a new set of the OS software, or will I be able to perform a downgrade through the restart-and-recovery process I've seen posted?
2) Should I backup my drive? If so, what would you recommend I use? (PS. I did not perform a backup before upgrading to Mavericks)

If you use Internet Recovery (Command + Option + R during restart; hold until you see a spinning globe and progress bar) - it'll take a while to connect to Apple's servers - up to 15 minutes. In any case, once you're there, you'll see a Utilities window. Choose Disk Utility and choose to erase your drive (or course, back up your stuff first!). When that is done, back to the Utilities window and choose to install Mac OS X. If yours came with mountain lion, that is what you should be getting as internet recovery/erasing the drive will result in reinstalling the original OS version. Migrate from mac mini mountain lion to mbp lion

Any suggestions on how to migrate a mac mini on mountain lion to a macbook pro on lion. Booting from time machine doesn't work because it only wants to restore to the original computer. Migration assistant doesn't show the backup drive as a source for the restore. Not sure how to proceed.

Let's backup, because when I said that earlier I thought you were leaving Lion on the MBP. So, you should be able to erase the drive in the MBP, then boot from the Time Machine backup. If you have 10.8.2 backed up, then there is an invisible copy of the Recovery HD. Connect the Time Machine backup drive to the MBP.
Boot Using OPTION key:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
4. Select the Recovery HD on the Time Machine backup drive.
5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Once it boots up you can use the main menu to first repartition and reformat the MBP's drive, then restore the Time Machine backup to the MBP.
Sort of sorry to go in such circle to get to this point, but I just did not understand the goal. Forgive my being so thick-headed today.
