Migration from MBP to MBA: tips on using two machines at once?

Hi folks,
Seeking wisdome of the community here. I am retirng a long serving MBP-2010, moving over to a new MBA-2013.
For lots of reasons, I'm setting up the new Air manually, rather than use Setup Assistant. I'm planning to continue using the Pro as a media player, at home, for emergency backup. The Air will be my main work device. I'm manually migrating my data, and will reinstall software on the Air selectively, as needed, to minimize some of the messiness that slowed down my old unit.
So here's my question, concen: Are there any concerns, pitfalls, or tricks to using two machines, connected to the same Apple ID, in parallel? Should I uninstall any of the software in the old unit, or disconnect it from my iTunes, or anything else?
Thanks for any reference, advice, or URLs. I searched the boards, but had no luck finding similar queries.
All the best, Adam

No, you can connect many Macs (and IOS devices) to the same AppleID, in fact for iCloud useage, you have to.

  • Migration from MBP to MBA

I have a mid-2011 MBA which is fully set up with applications and data.  My wife has an early-2011 MBP which is also fully set up with apps and data.
I am in the process of "switching" these two devices -- move my stuff to the MBP and hers to the MBA.  Both are fully up to date with software update and both have been backed up using time machine.
I can use migration assistant to move the MBP to the MBA, but suspect that it will NOT have enough room as my own account (and files) will remain.  Am I correct in thinking this?  The MBA has a 250 GB SSD, but only 30 GB free.  If my suspicion is true, am I better off doing some sort of "disk wipe" on the MBA and then using migration assistant?
Thanks for the help and thoughts on this.

Since you say that you have both Macs backed up with Time Machine, read this link and choose the method that suits you the best:

  • After migration from MBP to MBA I can no longer add to my iTunes library

I just did what appeared to be a flawless migration from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air. All except for iTunes. I've searched here this site for a solution, tried various fixes, and nothing seems to work so far. Here's what happens:
iTunes works in all respects. All my files are still there, I can still sync to my iPhone, all of that. But if I do anything that requires writing music to the iTunes folders/database (such as adding an MP3 to the library or consolidating the library), I get an error "Attempting to copy to the disk "Macintosh HD" failed. You do not have enough privileges for this operation". I have tried changing the permissions for all of the iTunes music folders, including finally giving read/write access to "everyone". However, this error message refuses to go away.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?!
    Many thanks,
    Howard

Thanks -- I would like to try this. I do not know how to reach hard drive from old mac to new. Can you help me with this?
There are two ways - you can boot your old Mac in Target Mode (reboot your Mac, and as soon as you hear the startup chime hold down the T key on the keyboard until you see the yellow/orange Firewire logo on screen).  You can then use a FireWire cable to connect your new mac to your old one.  The old Mac hard drive will appear on your new Mac as if it is an external hard drive.
Details on Target Disk Mode:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
If you don't have a firewire cable but you do have a home network (i.e. both computers can access the Internet at the same time), you can share the hard drive on your old Mac and then connect to it on your new Mac.
Good article on sharing your hard drive:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1549
Finally, if the above doesn't thrill you, you can hook an external drive to your old Mac, copy the mail folder over to it, then connect the external drive to your new Mac and copy it over.  It's two steps, but if you don't have a firewire cable and aren't comfortable with sharing over a network it will work just as well - you just have to wait for the mail folder to copy twice instead of once.
If you get stuck post back!

  • When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other?

When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other? In the Migration tool, I was only given the option of choosing the computer when it appeared on the same network, and didn't see an option to connect them to each other. Even though they're both connected to the same network with a wired connection, the migration is painfully slow.

Yes. The following quotation is from About Windows Migration Assistant
These are the preferred network connections, in order:
Use a CAT6-certified Ethernet cable that is in good condition to connect the Ethernet port of the PC directly to the Ethernet port of the Mac or Ethernet adaptor (USB or Thunderbolt). You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
Use CAT6-certified Ethernet cables that are in good condition to connect the Mac and PC to your home network router/hub/switch. You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
For wireless, use the fastest wireless signal possible (802.11n 5Ghz). Try to have the PC, Mac, and the wireless access point all in the same room close to each other.

  • Best Way to Migrate from MBP iPhoto '09 to MBA iPhoto '11

Need to migrate wife's iPhoto '09 library from my MBP over to her new MBA which has iPhoto '11.
The iPhoto library seems larger than it should be given the number of photos and i understand this is because it retains the complete change history of each photo? Is there a function that automatically removes all but the final version of each photo?
Also, it is recommended that I uninstall iPhoto '11 and replace with iPhoto '09 (given some of the comments about '11 being buggy)?

Is there a function that automatically removes all but the final version of each photo?
No. Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
If you don't want this feature of iPhoto then the best advice is to use another app. This version control is hard-wired into iPhoto.
it is recommended that I uninstall iPhoto '11 and replace with iPhoto '09
    To re-install iPhoto 09
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Using the Go Menu in FInder menu and select Go To Folder
    In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder window will open at that location. Remove any packages that have iPhoto in the name.
    3. Re-install 09 from Installation Disk
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 - Migrated from MBP that had Flash but now it won't work

Does anyone else have a solution to this issue that does not involve doing a fresh install of Snow Leopard? There was another thread in this forum where the OP indicated that they did a fresh install of SL and that solved the issue. However, that solution is not acceptable to me.
I did a system migration from a Time Machine backup (from my old MBP which was also running 10.6.6) when I purchased my new 2011 MacBook Pro last week. All my applications seemed to be working normally until I attempted to watch a YouTube video in either Safari or Chrome. In both browsers, all I get is a black screen where the video should be playing.
I downloaded and installed the latest version of the Flash Player for Safari and I am not able to manually update the Flash Player for Chrome since that browser keeps the Flash Player up-to-date automatically. The black screen persists when attempting to watch a video on YouTube. I cleared the site cache for the Flash Player just in case something was buggy there, but the problems remains.
The last thing I tried was to remove Flash Player for Safari entirely by running the Adobe Flash Player Install Manager and choosing "Uninstall." I then re-installed Flash Player but the problem persists.
Finally, I am not running any third-party firewall software. When I right-click on a YouTube video, the menu says "Movie not loaded..."
Any assistance would be much appreciated!

Created a new user account on the machine and the problem remained when logged in as the new user.
For giggles, I decided to try to pull up a YouTube video on my wife's 2010 MBP. She hasn't been complaining that she was unable to load content. I was astonished to find that Safari on her laptop is exhibiting the same issues that mine is when going to YouTube in Chrome or Safari. . .black screen where the video should be.
I know I haven't changed any configurations on our router, so I doubted that was the culprit. I can't imagine that an ISP would block YouTube, of all things. To rule these things out, I went back to my laptop and tethered it to my 3G smartphone. Still, even using the cell network, YouTube videos are "blacked out."
Also, I run several VMs, so I tried loading YouTube in Chrome and IE in Windows 7 and they both exhibit the same problem. At this point, I'm dumbfounded that both mine and my wife's MacBook Pros have the same problem when connecting to different networks and the problems persist across OS'es.
Any other suggestions you can think of aside from making a trip to the Apple Store?

  • Migrated from MBP with moutain lion to new macbook pro retina display and now I have lion os

After migrating from a time machine backup and logging in (had problems with that too and had to restart user password) the os version is 10.7.4 when it should be 10.8.2
Went to the app store and I have to pay again to get the upgrade.. Do i have to pay again???
    Thanks!

    Hi again, Juan.
OK this is just a guess but I believe that when you set up your rMBP from your old MBP you used TM restore not Migration Assistant. What happened is that you installed your old system OS10.7.4 and all files.
Using Migration Assistant (MA) would not have overwritten your OS.
See this taken from Finder Help....
    Recover your entire system
If you use Time Machine to back up your computer, you can recover your system’s contents if your system or startup disk is damaged.
Important: Only use your Time Machine backup to restore your system to the computer that is the source of the backup. If you want to use your backup to transfer your information to a new computer, use Migration Assistant.
Transfer your info from a computer or disk
If you’re restoring your system because of a problem with your startup disk, repair or replace the disk before following these instructions.
Make sure your Time Machine backup disk is connected and turned on. If your backup disk is on a network, make sure your computer is on the same network.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
Select “Restore from a Time Machine Backup,” and then click Continue.
Depending on your type of backup disk, do one of the following:
If you use an external disk, select it and click Continue.
If you use a Time Capsule, choose your AirPort network from the AirPort menu on the right side of the menu bar, and then select your Time Capsule and click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
If you use a network disk, select it and click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
If necessary, enter the name and password you use to connect to your backup disk, and then click Connect.
Select the date and time of the backup you want to restore, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
After you restore your system from a Time Machine backup, Time Machine may perform a full backup at the next scheduled backup time. This is normal. Time Machine resumes incremental backups after the full backup is completed.
I suggest you make an appoint at the Genius Bar at a local Apple Store and they will help you restore your computer. Make sure you take in your old MBP and your Time Machine back up disk as well.
Do not use instructions above for a TM restore now, because it will only reinstall Lion 10.7.4 not ML 10.8.X.
You need to reinstall ML first and then I think all of your problems will go away.
So did I guess right? Did you launch TM and restore or did you launch Migration Assistant to move files?
Hope this helps, if you cannot get to the Apple Store, I can try to walk you through reinstalling ML, but first we need to download a copy of ML.

  • Migration from Crystal IX to BO-XI using java sdk-- very urgent

    Post Author: Pranav.Sharma
CA Forum: Migration to XI R2
Need help in migration from Crystal Report IX to BO-XI.
Currently we are using CR IX and Java SDK to access reports from J2ee application. These reports reside on remote server where we have shared access to that directory.
We are accessing these reports through our j2ee application. Can anyone please elaborate whether we can use same SDK here with slight change in code probably in authentication related to CMS etc and calling mechanism or we have to go for BO java SDK alltogether. Is anything we are missing here?
Can anyone please  help as  we have to complete migration in 1-2 days.

The first thing you will want to do is to publish all of your reports to Business Objects XI and make sure they all still work. Obviously they won't have the dynamic parameters anymore but you should just ensure they all work and are able to connect to their databases. You can use a tool like the publishing wizard to help you.
All the reports should now be available inside of XI.
Unfortunately you will need to manually modify all of the 400 reports to use the business objects Dynamic Cascading Parameters DCP.
There should be some DCP info in the Business Views documentation.
    I hope this helps

  • Migrating from Eclipse/Ant/MyFaces Trinidad to using JDeveloper--need help

I recently downloaded JDeveloper 11.1.1.2.0. Several years ago, I used JDev to do some very simple JSP/servlet development with no formal framework. Times have changed a lot.
For the past few years, I have been developing server-side Java web apps using Eclipse JEE and Ant (ie, everything is set up so that the developer does not depend on the IDE). We currently implement web apps using Apache MyFaces Trinidad JSF components (but not Facelets). Any developer here can check out our code and simply run Ant to build the projects--no need to even have Eclipse installed. Anyone here can build and develop with a text editor and Ant, if they prefer.
I am impressed and yet overwhelmed by the robust functionality of the latest JDev--so impressive, but I feel almost a bit too removed from "seeing" what is going on in the code and deployment. I like the notion of drag-and-drop along with wizards, but I want to also know how the JDev project is set up manually; ie, where everything goes, without having to guess on this. I get the impression that I need to learn, very specifically, the framework of ADF. But unfortunately, the tutorials seem to focus on only using the wizards and drag-drop functionality.
For example, how do I set up JDev to build a project only by running Ant using my properties files and build.xml? This is trivial to do in Eclipse by specifying the Project Builder. Is there some similar setting I can use in JDev?
Is there full compatibility with Trinidad--didn't Oracle make the original Trinidad?
Has anyone posted advice on migrating from Eclipse JEE to JDev?
Sorry if this is an old set of questions; if I had known where to search for this information, I would not be posting this thread.
    Many thanks!
    Mike Quentel

The basic steps for bringing your existing code into JDeveloper are:
Import->WAR File - or alternatively create a new application and in it create a new projects->project from existing source
The next couple of steps have to do with setting the project properties:
Then you need to set up your project content path (specifically things like Web content and resources content)
Then you need to add the jars/libraries in your project classpath and libraries.

  • Can't migrate from 10.8 to 10.9 with Time Machine

My old 2009 MacBookPro stopped working and I replaced it with the new one and hoped to be able to use the Migration Assistant to recover my backed up data I had in Time Machine. So far it jsut keeps "Looking for other sources" when I choose to migrate from Time Machine. I was told I should be able to do this going to the new system and I've done it with out any issues in the past. Is there anything I can do to get this working?

I'm having the same issue with trying to restore a Time Machine backup of a Mavericks machine saved to my Airport Time Capsule to a newly re-installed Macbook Pro running Mavericks. Anyone have any other suggestions?
The Migration Assistant keeps getting stuck on Step 5 of the section "Time Machine And other disk migration" in these instructions http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872.
The computer names have been set to the same names. My Airport Time Capsule firmware version is 7.7.2.
Solution: I had to click on the Time Capsule icon to enable the "Continue" button. The icon doesn't look like a selectable button, unfortunately.

  • Downgrade from Mavericks to Snow Leopard without using Time Machine

    Hello.
I upgraded from Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.8) and upgraded to Mavericks but the Time Machine was not turned on. Is there anyway to downgrade back to Snow Leopard?
I contacted Apple Support and was told that it is not advisable to format the drive and do a clean install using Snow Leopard installation Cd's since Mavericks made changes to the hardware on the iMac. They advise using time Machine to downgrade, but this option is not available to me. Is this true?? Or can I re-install Snow Leopard with no issues?

I'd rather have a "delete all" in messages and VVM if I had a choice.  Those tend to pile up and before you know it, you have a hundred to delete!
