  • Migration from old macbook air to new macbook air...beware

Although spent hours on the phone with Apple and bought necessary cables, they were not able to get migration assistant to work using ethernet.
You can't use firewire as new macbook air doesn't have it. You can use thunderbold as old macbook air doesn't have it.
Finally I was told to use Time Machine. After connecting old macbook air backup to new macbook air and using migration assistant, I got a message saying (essentially) 'you can use this from an old mac'. Spent more time on the phone with Senior tech support. They had no clue.
Finally called the store. Genius said, you can't migrate from old macbook air with Snow Leopard to new macbook air with Lion. You must upgrade old macbook air to Lion first.
GEEZ, do you think someone at tech support might have mentioned that DAYS ago?

    That is bad info.
The MBA that I am using right now used a TM backup from my old MBP, which was running Snow Leopard. Absolutely no problems using Setup Assistant to import all the apps, data, user settings. The session performed flawlessly, and took about an hour to move everything.
If at all possible, use Setup Assitant, rather than Migration Assistant. The transition will be seamless.

  • I Photo will not update after migrating from old I-Mac to new I-Mac with fusion drive

I just migrated from 2009 I-Mac with Mountain Lion to New I-Mac with Mountain Lion with migration Assistant. Now... I tunes will not update although Apple says one is available

a couple of things - you should not "migrate" applications - you should use the new ones that come preinstalled - what version of of iPhoto do you have on your new mac?
Migration assistance does not handle the iPhoto library well sometimes - the best way is to drag the bad iphoto library from the pictures folder on the new system to the desktop, connect the two systems together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto on the new system - it will open and convert the iPhoto library as necessary and you will be fine - once you test the iPhoto library you can delete the one on the desktop

  • Calendar Free/Busy permissions being ignored for users migrated from Exchange 2003, fine for new users created on Exchange 2010

I have uncovered a situation where it seems the free/busy permissions are being ignored for users that were migrated from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010.
I have the default permissions set to only show Free/Busy Time, not Details.  However if I look at the calendar for a users who was migrated from the old Exchange 2003 server, I can see details.  If I look
at a newer user who was added directly to the Exchange 2010 server, I (correctly) only see the times and "Free" or "Busy", not the specific details.
I verified the permissions on the migrated mailboxes many different ways (Exfolders, cmdlets, etc) and all signs point to only allow showing Free/Busy Times, but alas, I can still see the Details as well.
My users are using Outlook 2010.

    Hi,
Does this issue occur on Outlook only or both Outlook and OWA?
Since you have double checked the permissions via multiple methods, it seems there is nothing problem on permission. Please make sure the migration from Exchange 2003 server completed successfully.
If in OWA everything goes well (cannot see details), it should be an issue on the Outlook client side.
I suggest run Outlook under safe mode to avoid some AVs and add-ins.
I suggest re-create profile to refresh the caches.
    Thanks

  • Migration from old MacBook Pro to newer, lose iPhoto folders. Any cure?

In a recent migration using migration assistant from old MacBook Pro core 2 duo (10.6.8) to a newer quad core i7 (10.8.3), when I opened iPhoto for the first time and nothing happened. I then imported all my photos from the old iPhoto, and lost all folders I had. Now it seems I have to redo all folders. Any cure? I could do a clean install if there is a solution.

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/
Sign up for the free trial, and use the office applications online for up to 30 days.
Granted, they online versions won't be IDENTICAL to the Mac versions you're used to, but it will get you through until you get back home, and you SHOULD have the ability to save the docs in a format you can use with your Mac apps later.
Another alternative is the free OpenOffice.org and similar open-source Office applications that can read and write MS-Office file formats.

  • Itunes migration from old XP PC to new Vista PC - whilst retaining content

    Hi there,
I've just received a new laptop, and I'm performing the tiresome migration of data from one machine (running XP and itunes 7.5.0.20) to another (running Vista Basic and itunes 7.6.1.9). Incidentally, I do not have any purchased music on my iTunes.
I have perfomed a manual migration of the data and itunes' music store (My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music, and have re-imported the new folder into itunes which appears to be sucessful, i.e. I can see and play "all" my music from iTunes.
    My questions are:
It appears to of lost all my old podcasts.
It also appears to be filling any new podcasts no into the podcast directory (god know where it is now putting them).
It has also lost my playlists.
Does anybody know if there is a slicker (and less manual) process to seemlessly migrate iTunes from one machine to another, and for your ipod not to have an issue with it?
    Many thanks in advance
    Cheers
    Chris

I found a solution using help from another forum...so I'll post it...hopefully other people can use it:
    1. I copied my "Adam's Folder\Music" folder into "iTunes\iTunes Music" on my XP PC, and then I changed the library location to that location under prefrences>advanced.
    2. I then copied the entire "My Music\iTunes"(including the Music folder I just added to it) folder from my XP PC over the "Music\iTunes" folder on my Vista PC. Then I changed the library location to "Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Music" location under preferences>advanced.
    3. I then, on my Vista PC, copied the "iTunes Music\Music" folder to "Adam's Folder\Music", and changed the library location to that under preferences>advanced.
    done!
iTunes found the files, and all the Library Data(Date Added, Playcounts, etc.) is there as well! All while not having iTunes manage my music, and keeping music on the same relative folder on my new vista PC(Desktop\Adam's Folder\Music).

  • Migration from OLD HDD to LARGER NEW HDD

Hi experts, I am deciding to upgrade my G4 cube HDD from 20G to 120G. The point is that how can I migrate my entire OS 10.3.9 ,application and other personal stuffs to new HDD? What method can I apply to or is there any possible way to reduce my time on re-installing OS and heaps of applications? Many thanks!
    PowerMac G4 Cube   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Get a Firewire enclosure for your old hard drive. When you remove the drive install it in the Firewire enclosure. Install the new drive. Boot from your OS X installer disc and use Disk Utility to partition and format the new drive. Connect the Firewire drive and boot the computer from the external drive by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external drive and click on the large right arrow button. After your computer boots from the external drive open Disk Utility and clone the external drive to the new internal drive:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.
When the clone has completed quit DU and open the Startup Disk preference. Select the internal system volume and click the Restart button.

  • After migrating from old macbook pro to new, aperture is not opening many photo images onboard and on external hard drive

    Is my question out there?
It seems the longer I have Aperture open more and more images become unavailable. There's a dotted line around a blank thumbnail and clicking it may result in prolonged static "loading" symbol and ultimately, if anything else, a message that the file type (which is .jpg, nothing exotic) is not supported. These images are on an external iomega terabyte hard drive. It gets worse. If I go straight to the iomega drive where the images are all listed, selecting one brings up a symbol instead of a thumbnail and double-clicking brings the message that I "do not have permission" to open this file.

No, that shouldn't have mattered necessarily ss long as you moved the folders into the correct spots.
You could start over by throwing all the folders you just moved in back out (could park them in a folder on your desktop). Then, if you want to start over completely, and - important - have the following file on your external - go to Users -> Library -> Preferences: com.apple.Mail.plist. This file contains all your account settings.
Copy that file over to your new Mac.
Throw out that same file on your new Mac (Mail will now think it has never been launched before).
Move the old .plist file into the same spot.
Move your Mail folders into place (and replace any newer folders there, so you will have exactly the same folder setup as you did in the old one).
Launch Mail (keep fingers crossed - it should work!)

  • Removing registered user from old iphone and setting new user on it

Ya i had a Iphone 3g and updated to the iphone 4 and got all set up it no prob then cleard the 3g and gave it to my sister and she synced it to her library no prob but when she goes to download a app it asks for my log in

How did you clear the iPhone 3G?
Was it cleared by restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the iPhone's backup with iTunes on your computer, or did you use the erase all content and settings option on the iPhone?
If she is logged in to iTunes with her iTunes account on her computer and her computer has not been authorized with your iTunes account with iTunes, then your iTunes account should no longer be available on the iPhone.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

  • Using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook

When using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro, that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook, will emails, contacts and calendar entries be moved to Outlook on the new MacBook or into Mail, Contacts and Calendar?

I doubt they will. But then I'm not sure as I used a migration program once about 18 years ago and totally FUBARed the system I had at that time and I've never used one again.
For me the reason to have a new system is to start fresh. Installing only program that I now use and manually copying data over from the older system.
Not sure your older version of Outlook, and the outlook mail boxes, are compatible with Office/Outlook for Mac 2011.
A better place to ask this question would be on the MS Office for Mac forums.
Hope it all works out for you.

  • How do I migrate my albums from old mac to my new macbook?

How do I migrate my albums from old mac to my new macbook? The photos are already migrated, but I've lost all the old groupings in the albums and I don't want to manually re-group the thousands of photos!!!

I was using version 6.0.6 of iPhoto.
My issue is that I already have sorted the photos into Albums - about 50 of them. And now on my new computer I can't see any of the albums I had sorted them into, and I don't want to have to recreate all those Albums!  That was one of the primary reasons I stuck with Apple when I upgraded. Had I known it wouldn't bring the albums over, I probably wouldn't have bought another apple.
Is there any way to get all the work I've already done in organising my photos onto my new computer? Thanks for your help.
