Migration from old to new iMac do you need to use set up on new or go straight to migration?

Just got a new iMac and going to migrate from my old 2008 iMac, info from Apple Support is a bit confusing but I want to know if it is best to use the "Set Up" on new iMac before migration or go straight into migration.
Also the support info says to connect both using ethernet as one option (which is my option) and connected to your network, how do you do this as there is only one ethernet port on each machine and if connected together it would not be possible to connect to a network, ie, the internet via my ISP. Suppot says no router etc needed.
Somewhat confused so if there is anyone out there who has done this I would appreciate their comments.
Thank you for any help forthcoming.
Derek

I'm interestred in purchasing the new iMac and was wondering if it was possible to use any type of DVD with it.  Such as a movie.

Attempted to import 6.5 GB of (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (plus many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.  I read a previous response to a similar question -- to copy the pictures library to the new computer.  How best to do that?

There's actually an option to iPhoto Library Manager that makes this all almost work flawlessly (and work well enough for me). With the exception of Photo Albums that the pictures are part of, if you select "Library > Rebuild Library..." and then select "Scavange Orphaned Photos" check box, then it will put all the Photos and Movies into the "Scavanged Photos" album. It matches the modified pictures to their originals. It preserves all the event names and photo groupings. All the meta-data I could spot check it got right (although with 44k pictures, I only checked a few). If you fail to select this option, however, it will find no pictures at all when it goes to rebuild the library (this was true of the small test libraries I tried as well as the big, monster 280GB library I just finished converting). The conversion process took 5 hours to run, but in the end produced a library my new iPhoto can read and that I can interact with. I'll be suggesting to the iPhoto Library Manager folks a notation that would estimate the number of Orphaned Photos and display that number as a hint to the user that the option would be useful.
Edited: Thanks to Old Toad and LarryHN for their help in finding which of the many options to transition this library to 9.5.1 I needed to use. Sorry if I took my frustration of the past several months out on you guys for generously trying to help me.

at this point yes, you should uninstall everything migrated, clean and then reinstall properly using the installation files.

Boot into recovery mode, launch Disk Utility and wipe the HD. Quit DU and restore the OS. On first boot, migrate properly, using the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

  • Migration from old macbook air to new macbook air...beware

Although spent hours on the phone with Apple and bought necessary cables, they were not able to get migration assistant to work using ethernet.
You can't use firewire as new macbook air doesn't have it. You can use thunderbold as old macbook air doesn't have it.
Finally I was told to use Time Machine. After connecting old macbook air backup to new macbook air and using migration assistant, I got a message saying (essentially) 'you can use this from an old mac'. Spent more time on the phone with Senior tech support. They had no clue.
Finally called the store. Genius said, you can't migrate from old macbook air with Snow Leopard to new macbook air with Lion. You must upgrade old macbook air to Lion first.
GEEZ, do you think someone at tech support might have mentioned that DAYS ago?

    That is bad info.
The MBA that I am using right now used a TM backup from my old MBP, which was running Snow Leopard. Absolutely no problems using Setup Assistant to import all the apps, data, user settings. The session performed flawlessly, and took about an hour to move everything.
If at all possible, use Setup Assitant, rather than Migration Assistant. The transition will be seamless.

    m1doc,
Are you migrating from a Mac or a MS Window machine? Either way you probably should be in touch with AppleCare, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. They can usually help on issues like this. If you don't know the phone number please use http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 to help find the number in your country.

  • Migration from G5 Leopard to iMac Quadcore Lion

My old G5 has been running a tad slow. After 8 years, I'm retiring it to server status. I need some advice on migration. Migration Assistant fails. I've abandoned it. I've loaded most apps I need on the new machine... Here's where I need help:
    1) The G5 has two SATA volumes. A 1TB boot volume and 2TB that's devoted to iTunes. I'm going to pop the 2TB iTunes volume in a USB 2 case and point iTunes on the new iMac at that. The G5's iTunes will then get pointed at the Music folder as intended.  Will that work?
    2) As for the boot volume, it has a pretty large Documents directory under my user account. I'm presently using SuperDuper to back up this drive. That's going to run all night. If I use a jumper to hook that drive temporarily extracted from the G5 case to my iMac, can I copy the Documents files over and put it back in the G5 with a reasonable chance of the G5 being okay?
    3) I have and iPhone, several iPods and an iPad. I also have a MobileMe account, so all my calendar, contact, etc., are synched. If I log in to the iTunes store on the new iMac, the devices should retain their functionality, just with new backups, correct?
    Am I missing anything?
This is my first iMac for production use. It seems fast enough, and I like the 27-inch screen paired with my 24-inch Cinema HD display. I design newspapers in Creative Suite and I might mount the 24-inch in portrait mode... Just because I can.

Migration Assistant generates an error that says something to the effect of the G5 needing an update. After a lot of looking, an update does not exist. A google search shows a lot of people with the same issue. They also said a Time Machine backup made on a PPC machine will not translate to Intel, so I charted the course outlined above. Most of my files are on a server, so it's really just apps, settings and iTunes that need migrated. I just bought a 3TB USB drive that I'll start using for Time Machine on the new iMac. Thanks for your input.

For the Internet, you should set up a router on your modem, this router will route the packets to any device on the local area network.
If you use the iMac as a router, like if you connect the Ethernet cable from your modem to the iMac, then broadcast a Wifi signal, the iMac will have to remain on all the time, at full power. Thus drastically shortening it's lifespand.
A router is only about $100 or so, offers much better security as it's like a large guard, someone has to hack through router first to get your iMac or other devices.
If it breaks, you buy another 5 years later for another $100, so your not placing all that always on wear and tear on your expensive iMac.
Apple's airport routers are pretty good, easy to set up and have automatic firmware updates, plus music sharing etc.
Set up properly you will be very secure

i changed my email for my apple id, but i can't change my iCloud  account because i can't remember my old password, and now i need to use iCloud for my new IPhone but it isn't working, how do i fix that?

If the old ID is yours, and if your new ID was created by editing the details of this old ID (rather than being an entirely new ID), go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

I just got a new computer. I need to install CS6 to my new computer but don't have my serial number and my old computer will not download and install crative cloud!   HELP!!!!!!!

In this complicated case, I think it's important that you get your work in.
The Photography Plan includes Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CC. Open an account with them and for $10 a month you can be back in business which I think nets you more than $10. It's what I do. You can do this immediately. You get two seats and they can be either Mac or PC.
In your spare time you can sort out the license issue and cancel the plan later on if this is fixed.
If you don't want to go there, then you will have to call Customer Service by phone and hope they can fix this.
