Migration from SQL Server 7 to oracle 8.1.7 on windows 2000 professional

Hello All,
I am currently working on Database migration from sql server 7 to oracle 8.1.7.
My setup is as follows:
1. Both the databases (sql server and oracle are on the same machine )
2. My sql server database contains 200 tables and 190 stored procedures, which need to be migrated to oracle.
When i am trying to capture the Source database details, its capturing evry thing but when its mapping at the end ...it says "MAPPING ROLE PUBLIC" and its not proceeding furthur..What do u want me to do ? i waited for approx 1 hr , still its not proceeding....How to resolve this bug ?
Also please suggest me the best methodology for Migrating the stored procedures. allmost all my stored procedures have TEMP Tables implemented in it. Please help me in this...
Also please let me know the Timeframe estimate for this total thing to be done..

I am using the Migration Workbench.
Everything goes fine during Capturing phase, but while
creating Oracle model the Workbench just hangs at
"Mapping Tablespaces" for over three hours.
(not exactly hangs in the sense that it responds to mouse
events and I can abort the ongoing activity ...)
What should I do ? Should I let it go on and see what

However ... if I try to migrate to Personal Oracle 8 ...
the migration goes fine from start to end ... just that
the SQL Server triggers aren't successfully migrated.

You may want to start by downloading the Oracle Migration Workbench. That generally does a reasonable job in moving the tables, stored procedures, etc. from SQL Server to Oracle. If your VB code is database agnostic, it should continue to work without any more intervention. Realistically, however, you'll rpobably have to at least tweak a few things that don't work the same way in the old ODBC/ OLE DB provider and the new one.
The hard part of migrations like this is that you may need to revisit some of your architectural decisions if you want Oracle to perform well. There are plenty of things that one does in SQL Server (i.e. frequent commits) to improve performance that have the opposite affect in Oracle. Identifying and fixing these sorts of things tends to be the largest part of a migration like this. Unfortunately, I don't know of a resource that talks addresses all the possible gotchas here.

what are the general issues to be considered when migrating a database from SQL server to Oracle 8i.

What we did was to create the schema using migration work bench and then transfer the data using data junction
The main issues that you have to handle are
1) Data type issue, here problem comes converting chars to varchars as chars are padded and may not work in indexes, so you have to trim the afterwards, and if you have any image type data types in Sqlserver, you can use either lobs or long raw, it again depends upon your application, if you uses lobs you may have to recode your application
2) Sql statements, Oracle cannot understand Sqlserver sql statements, so you have to convert them all. Sqlserver allows two outerjoins to a table, Oracle does not, so you have to modify your functionality
3) Connections to the database. if you are using ODBC then use Oracle ODBC drivers and the latest ones, otherwise you may encounter memory leaks.
These are from the top of my head, if you have any specific problem I may be able to help.

Migrating from SQL Server to ORACLE using SqlDeveloper tool - IN OUT CURSOR

Hi All,
I am new to Oracle. I am asked to migrate a database from SQL Server to ORACLE. I have migrated all the SP's and functions except 2. I am facing the following problem. Pls do reply me if anyone knows the solution since I am struggling for the past 2 days for these two functions
the function is as follows in ORACLE.

When I tried to call from some other function its showing me an error.

It is some time back, so I do not remember the specifics. Oracle gives Oracle Migration Workbench for free. You can use it to convert all SQL tables and procedures etc to oracle. It is not that difficult. If there are no stored procedures etc, you can just extract the DDL and create the tables with minor changes to the script. You might need bcp-sqlloader/trasparent gateway etc copy the data.

Migration from SQL Server to Oracle database

I have got 2 questions:
1. We are planning to convert our OLTP sql server databases to oracle databases. I tried using SQL Developer to migrate a small sql server database to oracle database(size 5Gb). It was fine. when I tried to migrate another database(size 90G), it is taking too long. The problem with sql developer is I cannot choose and pick tables. out of 250 tables, I need to migrate abt 80 tables(size will be abt 50G). can anybody share their experiences, if any, in converting medium size sql server databases to oracle databases? any others options??
2. I am planning to convert sql server ddl to oracle ddl. I am testing bcp out and use sql loader to import the data. Right now, I am manually creating oracle tables from sql server tables. I am using http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/gateways.112/e12069/apa.htm#BABCIIDI to convert the code. Are there any other better ways to convert sql server DDL to Oracle DDL?

DDLs should be converted manually. Oracle is not SQL-Server.
If you for example have the partitioning option, you should consider using partitioning and local indexes where possible. Not all tables need to be hash tables. Do you defer segment creation or not? What is the type of tablespace? Do you set percentages for free and used to manage when the data block is on the free list and how much is reserved in the data block for updating rows in that block?
There are numerous considerations to make in terms of the physical database design.
Using BCP and SQL*Loader sound good. SQL*Loader is fast and scalable - am using it to load up to 3.6 million rows every 60 seconds. Direct and parallel loads provide the best performance in this regard (assuming that the underlying table structure and usage supports this approach).

Migration from SQL Server to Oracle issue

While trying to migrate SQL Server to Oracle via Standard Migration method, I got stuck at the point where it says.....
To perform online capture, right-click the connection name in the Connections navigator and select Capture database-type (for example, Capture MySQL, Capture Microsoft Access, Capture Microsoft SQL Server, or Capture Sybase Adaptive Server).
The problem is that, I do not see this menu Capture Microsoft SQL Server. Looks like this is a bug SQL Developer 3, which does not shows option for Capture on right clicking the non-oracle database connection. In earlier release of SQL Developer 2.1.1, I can see the option of Catture...

I did some testing and was able to make the capture by following these steps -
- right click on the SQL*Server database in the Connections panel
- choose 'Migrate to Oracle'
- follow the menus until you get to 'Capture' screen where you should have the SQL*Server database to be migrated in the 'Selected Databases' panel
- then choose 'Finish' from the options at bottom of the screen.
- you should then have the capture scripts in the directory chosen earlier in the process.

(1), where should the SQL developer installed? in SQL Server side? Oracle side? or any PC with connection to the databases?
(2), do I need to get some plug-in(s) for MWB to work? If yes, which plug-in do I need and where are they?

Migrate Data action hanging migrating from sql server to Oracle 10g

Hi,
I am currently migrating a SQL Server 2005 db to Oracle 10g using SQL Developer 1.2.1. I have created the migration repository, captured the SQL Server db objects, and created the target schema. There are about 109 tables captured. During Data migration, however, the data move hangs. I have run the data move a couple of times now and it does not hang while migrating any particular table, but seems to be more to do with the length of time it is taking to migrate. Could this be an issue with SQL Server connections being lost? The SQL Server db is quite large. Row counts of 100k plus.

Probably. There is an offline option for migrating data under the migration menu. Generate Scripts for the data move using the appropriate converted model and u can export the data to bcp export files and load it with teh generated SQL Loader scripts.

Problem with foreign and primary keys migration from SQL Server to Oracle

Hi folks, i'm using SQL Developer to migrate from a SQL Server database to Oracle and i'm stuck with a couple issues:
The worst of them so far is the fact that i can't migrate any of the PKs and FKs. After successfully capturing the SQL Server DB model and converting it to Oracle, when the tool generates the scripts, all ALTER TABLE queries that add the PKs and FKs have their target columns duplicated.
for example: when i'm trying to migrate a simple table that contains an Id (PK) and Name columns, the tool generates the following scripts:

Id NUMBER(10,0) NOT NULL,
Name VARCHAR2 NOT NULL

As for the FKs, the tool duplicates the columns as well:

I was unable to replicate this issue. My primary / foreign keys where defined using unique columns.

I tried a few things like
capturing twice and renaming both models the same
renaming the converted models
but with no luck.
I think this issue is occuring either at the capture or convert phase.
1) Are you performing the capture online or offline?
2) Can you provide a the entire DDL for one of these tables and its indexes to see if I can replicate?
3) Did the capture or convert fail or have to be redone at any stage ?
I all else fails I would attempt a capture and convert again using a brand new repository (create a new schema in Oracle and associate the migration repository with it).

I would like to hear about possible options of migrate JD Edwards on SQL Server (about 50GB) and want to convert to Oracle 9i/10g Release.
Please let me know the efforts required besides data migration. Did anyone done this migration on JDEdwards application and would like to hear the complexities involved in the SQL/Stored Proc/Trigger Conversions

the following are the steps that gives you overview on SQL db->Oracle db migration. However I strongly recommend you to take field consultant's support considering the complexities in data migration.
1. Create an Add on server plan for the new Database server.
2. Create the database and users in your database.
Create the DB's & JDE users in Oracle to hold the copies of the tables you want to keep. I would suggest creating DB's with the same names that JDE recommends within an NT/Oracle installation - see the Installation guide for details. Those names are as follows, however, you can put everything in one DB if you want:
JDE812
This holds System, Server Map, Object Librarian and Data Dictionary tables. For other releases this DB may be named JDE7333 (Xe), JDE7334 (ERP8), JDE9 (8.9), or PS811 (8.11).
JDE_PD812
This holds Central Objects and Versions tables. For other releases this DB may be called JDE_PD7333, JDE_PD7334, JDE_PD9, PS_PD811.
JDE_PRODUCTION
This holds the Control Tables and Business Data tables. For other releases this DB may be called JDE_Production (Xe, ERP8 & 8.9), PS_PROD (8.11).
Depending on the release you're running, you will have scripts on the deployment server under \JDEdwards\E812\database that can be edited to create these databases for you. You need to also create the users for these databases. See the Windows installation guide for the release you're working with to walk you through editing and running these scripts.
3. Create the new datasources and modify them accordingly.
Create new, custom Data Sources to point to those databases. For this I would suggest calling the Data Sources similar names to the original DS's. For example:
Business Data - PRODSQL
Control Tables - PRODSQL
Central Objects - PD812SQL
Versions - PD812SQL
System - 812SQL
Object Librarian - 812SQL
Data Dictionary - 812SQL
ENT - 812SQL Server Map (where ENT is the name of the server the DB is installed)
Note: You will need to install Host code to this server for communication to work between the old DB server and this new one.
Install the Windows Host code on this new server. See the Windows Installation guide, Installing Enterprise Server section, for more information. Make sure to install services and run porttest to make sure communication works from the new Enterprise server to the old Server and DB.
4. Finally to move the data from one server to another using R98403 version.
Run R98403 for the Data Sources of the tables you want to copy. There are different versions of R98403 that can be used to copy from one Data Source to another. I would suggest making a copy of the version and using that to change processing options and data selection.
Always have a verified backup of your Database before you run R98403 just in case something happens and you overwrite original data.

Migrating from SQL Server to Oracle - Emulating SQL Server databases

I want to offer Oracle connectivity from an ADO.NET application that was developed for SQL Server. The application accesses multiple databases, each having the same schema but each storing different data that is confidential to the users of each database. I’ve been reading up on Oracle but have not yet found a way to group tables, views, etc. in a way that would emulate the ‘databases’ of SQL Server.
The application currently uses the SQL ‘CREATE DATABASE’ command to generate each database and then populates each with the appropriate tables. However, CREATE DATABASE appears to work differently with Oracle, creating a new instance rather than a new ‘internal database’. I’m wondering if CREATE TABLESPACE would give me the functionality I’m looking for, if it were subsequently possible to refer to a specific table within a specific tablespace.
I guess it comes down to whether it’s possible to access specific groups of tables, views, etc. within Oracle (e.g. Groups A, B and C, each having relational tables T1, T2 and T3, and be able to access and update data within any specific table, say, B-T2), while also being able to limit access to any of the Groups.
Would ODP.Net offer advantages over the System.Data.OracleClient for this architectural problem?
Any thoughts on how best to proceed would be most welcome. Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have.

Oracle and SQLServer are now both being accessed from my ADO.Net application, so a big thanks to all who've helped me with this first use of the forum. Hopefully these final comments might help someone else in turn...
In migrating from SQLServer to Oracle I initially found it hard to stop thinking about accessing multiple databases on a single dataserver and start thinking more about a single instance of a database that supports muliple users, any one of which can be assigned the same schema. While I had used the SQL CREATE command to produce miltiple databases within SQLServer, it serves a completely different purpose for Oracle, creating an entirely new instance that I did not require.
Other differences that I ran in to included Oracle utilizing 'sequences' to autoincrement identities, whereas SQLServer lets you specify the identify while creating a table (here SQLServer may simplify declaration but Oracle's approach may be more powerful, e.g. if the same identity applies across multiple tables). Also ADO.NET command parameters use an '@' prefix in SQLServer but ':' for Oracle. But by-and-large few changes were required to my SQL to get up and running with Oracle (I found the 'Oracle Database SQL Reference' useful but no substitute for logging into Oracle and just trying each string in the 'SQL Commands' area).
Clearly I'm no database expert and I've barely scratched the surface with Oracle, but after logging in through the 'Database Home Page' I've found Oracle to offer a very 'clean' and logical interface that made it easy to move around the application and get a 'feel' for its organization and what it can do before digging furhter into the documentation. The 'Object Browser' is also a great way to quickly view and edit your various tables, views, sequences, triggers, etc., and ditto your data. In short, I think I'm going to like Oracle.

Error in Migration from SQL Server to Oracle latest version

I was doing great (connected and captured SQL Server db and Oracle etc) till I ran the Generation Script which is giving me errors since I do not have DBO/admin permissions to create users.
I wish to create the database within an existing user's database schema - that is in my schema since I do not have privileges to create users.
What lines do I change in the script to make this happen.

You should remove the create user ..., grant ... and connect ... statements from the script. All you should keep are the DDLs for creating the objects: tables, views, triggers, sequences, SPs ...
But why don't you download Oracle Database Express Edition (http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/xe/index.html) and play with it. You can install it easily on your machine and then you can create as many users/schemas as you want as you are the DBA :).
