Migration from Win/bootcamp to OSX Lion

I'm trying to migrate from a Windows installation running in BootCamp on an iMac (old) to a new iMac running Lion. NO - I'm not trying to migrate BootCamp -> BootCamp, but from Windows to OSX.
The old iMac is running WinXP SP3. The Migration Assistant runs just fine, trying to listen to incoming requests.
The Migration Assistant on the new iMac quickly finds the other machine and displays the key for linking them.  The MA on the Windows/BootCamp end never seem to get the request and just keeps on listening.
I've tried them on FireWire networking, on Ethernet to Ethernet and on the same WiFi network. Nothing works.
Is this a problem because the other "PC" is an iMac? The icon that comes up in the MA has the "wintel box" icon, not an iMac icon, as if it is detecting that it is a PC/Windows system.

Olivier: I think the question here is more of how do I take all my enhancements/configuration from IC WIN to IC webclient, and the answer is you have to do it manually.
Manie: I suggest you do a broad search on this forum as there are several threads on the "migration" topic.  You can even use the word migration as the search criteria in this forum.
In addition you might want to post a new more specific question on a particular conversion area, after searching of course.  This is due to the fact that all landscapes are unique and we dont' know what you did with your system and what it might require in order for your functionality in the IC winclient to be present in the IC webclient.
At this point I'm going to put my moderator hat and lock this thread as it is way too vague and the answers can be found in a search of the forum.
Take care,
Stephen

Quite seriously, though, if you wish to use MS Office to it's full potential and if you depend on it on a regular basis, then upgrading to Office 2011 is the only reccommended way to go. You can use the free Apps mentioned, learn to use iWorks (which I love, but others don't) or make your system a shambles and lose your easy to use interface by the other method. Deduct the cost of Parallels from MS Office and it becomes pretty cheap, if that is the only PPC program you wish to use, which is the norm as PPC is long gone from development.
MS Office 2011 is not expensive if it is one of your major work tools. Think of those who had to update their Adobe software!
    Anyhow Cheers

  • Iphoto wont start after migration from snow leopard to mountain lion

Hello everyone hope you can help me, I've migrate from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and my IPhoto (8.1.2) won't start, I cant reinstall from app store because it came with the copy of Snow Leopard already instaled on my Imac...And I cant find the original Disc, so anyone can help ? felling desperate...

You should be able to Software Update and that will bring your iPhoto up to date.
iPhoto was 9.2.3 at 10.6.8, so I don't know why yours was stuck at 8.1.2
However you can stick the #2 10.6 disk into your machine and should be able to run the bundled app installer.
If that doesn't work there is Pacifist from CharlesSoft that you can extract iPhoto and replace your corrupted one, then run Software Update to bring it current.
Once you have replaced iPhoto, rebuild the database

Thank you for sharing the solution.
If your question was resolved/answered, you should mark the thread as "answered".
Then you should make e new thread/question for the new error you get. This will make it alot easier for other users, modetrators and Microsoft to help you. It will also make it much eaiser for othe people with the same issue to search the forums.
    Thank you.

I received a new PC, dual core platform, for XMAS.  However, I received a Com 1 port failure when performing a Hot Synch to upload my PD(,M500) data to Palm Desktop on the new PC.  Palm tech support said there is no USB driver available for the 64 bit OS.  Does anyone have a 3rd party USB driver, or any other suggestions to allow me to do a Hot Synch on my new PC.

Try to use Windows XP SP2/3 compatibility mode first, see if it works for you. And use Alchemy for the Audigy 2 ZS, FS2004 is making use of Directsound after all. Read the guide for using Alchemy here and here. Download Creative Alchemy here.

  • OS/DB migration from Win/MS SQL TO IBM i

Here is a novel situation. Our implementation partner wants us to install there pre-configured ECC 6.0 EHP6 system. However they have a win/MS SQL system and we have a IBM i system. We have considered trying scc7/scc8 client export/import but we are not sure this is going to work. Looks like our last option is to do a fully fledged OS/DB migration from the win/sql to our IBM i.
Has anyone done this before? Any idea on the level of complexity? How long we should reasonably allow for the process?
    Thanks
    Matthew Milne

    Hi Matt,
nice to hear from you ;-))
As they have doen in their system ABAPs and other repository changes, there is no chance with client copy etc.
The only useful way is a full OS/DB migration.
In this case, it makes it even simpler for you ;-)
They will do an export with SAPinst towards iSeries.
You will import this export (with a migration key) on iSeries - works 99% as an installation - as they want the system in the SAME way as they do have, you even do not need to install support packs at the end - so you can say: this way makes it easier for you ;-))
You can contact me, then we can discuss in detail (that is the way, that I always prefer to install new customers ...)

  • Where do notes sync from iPhone 4 to osx lion?

When I sync/back-up my iphone 4, where do the notes go on my Mac OSX Lion?

I am running iPhone iOS 5.1.1, iTunes 10.6.3 and OS X 10.7.4. I saw a similar procedure to what I am about to describe, in someone else's post, but I had some exceptions. In order to see all the notes I had created on my iPhone, in OS X Mail, I had to:
    1. Check "Sync Notes" in iTunes. (Choose my iPhone in the DEVICES section of the left pane. Choose Info section at the top of the main pane. Scroll down to Other section in the main pane.)
    2. Click Sync in iTunes. (In the bottom pane where it shows Capacity, Audio, Photos, Apps, etc.)
I don't know if this is unusual, but at this point iTunes alerted me that there was another user account in my iTunes, and prompted me if I wanted to Replace or Merge the content on my iPhone. I don't know what caused this alert, because I have just one Apple ID in my iTunes and the same on my iPhone. In any case I chose Merge, just to be safe.
Then iTunes did another unexpected thing. It said sync'ing to this computer was not enabled for this iPhone, and prompted me do I want to enable sync. That's wrong because I regularly (every week or so) sync to iTunes on this computer. (I.e. I click the Sync button and I see iTunes go through the six sync'ing/backup steps.) Anyway I chose Yes to avoid any confusion.
    3. Wait for sync to complete.
    4. Open OS X Mail. In the left pane, in the REMINDERS section, in the Notes folder, iTunes had created a new "On My Mac" folder with all the notes from my iPhone, which had been sync'ed to iTunes.
    5. Move the notes from "On My Mac" to the "iCloud" folder. I was able to select all of them and drag them.
    6. Uncheck "Sync Notes" in iTunes. Click Sync.
    7. Enable iCloud sync on my iPhone. (Settings, iCloud, Notes ON.)
    8. Make iCloud the default place for new notes on my iPhone. (Settings, Notes, Default Account.)
I don't see any duplicate info on my iPhone: just one copy of email accounts, notes, etc. so I don't know what merging was performed by iTunes after I clicked "Merge" in response to the "different user account" alert.

  • Migrating from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion Server

Hi all.  I kinda drop in and out of this forum, mostly when I've got a puzzler that I can't figure out.  My journey from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion was a little slow.  I tried to make the transition from Snow Leopard to Lion and failed, but this time I made it and I thought I'd share a little scratchpad post I wrote to document what I did.  Mostly this is about adding back a few things that I really need.  Here's the list of stuff that I added back:
    Firewall management (IceFloor)
    MySQL
Webmail, email filtering rules and email aliases (RoundCube)
"Group" emails (short, multi-recipient email exploders)
    Mailing lists (Mailman)
I also dramatically improved reliability by adding a lot of memory, and doing nightly-restarts of the machine.
Here's a link to the post
         http://www.haven2.com/index.php/archives/migrating-from-snow-leopard-server-to-o sx-server-mountain-lion
I'm happy to report that the new server has been running for a month or so and all seems fine.  Whew.  A long journey.  Thanks to all of you who posted things that helped me along the way.  Hopefully this will return the favor.

Moving from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion means first installing the client (non-Server) version of Mountain Lion and then install Server.app this means that for at least part of the process you will not be running DNS, DHCP or Open Directory.
If you are going to end up using the same DNS name and IP address after the change then an approach you could follow would be as follows.
    Destroy any Open Directory replicas
Archive your Open Directory Master (to make a backup)
Note down your DNS records in case they get messed up
Export via Workgroup Manager your users, and groups (you might not need this but better safe than sorry), make sure you do not include the diradmin account
Keep a full back of the server (you should always have backups)
Note down your DHCP server settings in case they get messed up
Note down any other service settings
    Install Mountain Lion
    Install Server.app
Install Workgroup Manager (extra free download)
    Run Server.app
Make sure settings for services are as much as possible the same as before
If your lucky that may be all you need to do, otherwise...
Restore Open Directory archive, if your lucky that will be all you need to do, otherwise...
    Make new Open Directory Master
    Run Workgroup Manager
Import users and groups you previously exported
You will then have to set passwords for each user as these are not preserved via Workgroup Manager export
When I did this, I was also being forced to change all my IP addresses so I had no choice but to use Workgroup Manager to export and import accounts.

  • No Sound from Mac Mini Under OSX Lion 10.7

I had to reinstall OSX Lion Server 10.7 on my Mac Mini late 2011 due to partition and boot record corruption. Since reinstalling I have not have sound. The only sound device that shows under Utilities||Sound is "Internal Speaker". Previously, "Headphones" also appeared. I have a Harman Kardon Soundsticks 2.1 sound system. It has only one sound connector. I always plugged it into the green port on the Mini. It worked fine. Since reinstalling I have no sound at all. Any ideas out there ? Solutions ? I've been through the Cmd-P-R deal, reinstalled OSX Lion Server, - all to no avail. HELP !!!
    TIA.
    Best regards,
    Brian Corll

You have almost 25 GB of free disk space not memory which isn't really very much at all. It is time to consider cleaning up your disk to increase your free space.
If you tell us the specs of your MacMini we can tell you why you are getting the error message.

  • Wiki migrated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion missing some links

    Hi
I migrated the wiki instance running on my old Snow Leopard Sever to the new Mountain Lion server following the instructions here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5082
All looked good, but then I find that some, not all,  of the links reference the old server instance and come up wtih 404's.
If I right click on the links that are broken and inspect them the results differ.
the outer html has a reference that looks like this
    <a class="cc-route-enabled" target="_blank" href="http://old.server/wiki/pages/G3J0z4r/Clint's_Index.html">Clint's Index</a>
a link that works looks like this
the outer reference is the same but the inner
    <a class="cc-route-enabled" href="/wiki/pages/Q4g545J/CMS_Teaching_Infrastructure_2012.html">CMS Teaching Infrastructure 2012</a>
The pages still exist. If you do a find for the link title you can find the page ok.
Is there a way to fix the broken links to remove the absolute paths to the old server?
    Cheers
    Jacqui

OK I've managed to retrive my folders by doing the following
1/ Open Finder and click on the Go Menu option
2/ Hold down the Alt key so that 'Library' apperas in the list of folders you can go to
3/ Select 'Library' and navigate to the Mail/Mailboxes folder
4/ Expand the tree and find your personal folders somewhere below that node (each personal folder will have its own .mbox extension)
5/ COPY the folders you want to some different location (eg your desktop). You need to do this as you won't be able to access the original location those files are in in the next couple of steps
6/Go to the mail App and choose File->Import Mailboxes...
7/ Select the 'Apple Mail' option from the 'Import From' section and hit continue
8/ Multiple select all the mailboxes you copied to your desktop in step 5/ above
9/ Now all your mailboxes will appear under an 'Import' node in your mail sidebar
10/ Breath a sigh of relief that you have managed to retrieve your precious personal folders!!!
Not sure why Apple is silent on this issues as obviously loads of people are expeiencing itand the fact that they now hide your library folder by default doesn't help one bit!!!
    Anyway hope this helps

  • Migrating from old mac with OSX 10.7 to new mac with OSX 10.8

I've just bought new MacBook Pro which comes with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion pre-installed. Previously I was using old MacBook with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion (the model which don't support Mountain Lion). I would like to transfer all my data from old computer to the new one using my TimeMachine drive. I assume that after restoring all my data from TimeMachine, I will have Mac OS X 10.7 Lion on the new MacBook, is this right? If so, would I be able to upgrade my system to Mountain Lion later without buying it on the Mac App Store? Or maybe there is a way to transfer all my data from old computer to the new one, preserving currently installed OS X Mountain Lion on the new laptop?

The reason macjack and tzikowski recommend doing the migration when the computer is booted for the first time is due to how Migration Assistant works. MA doesn't copy Applications & files, it copies Applications & accounts. If you've already logged into your computer, when you use Migration Assistant it will copy your account from your old computer to the new one. Most people have a preferred account name and have already set up their new computer with it so when MA is run and the old account is copied, it has to be renamed. This can be disturbing or disappointing and yes, you can simply delete the first account you made and change the name of the migrated one but the short name isn't changed, just the long name.
But when you boot the computer for the first time you can migrate before any account is created so the old account is copied to the new computer and your account name remains the same. This is the only difference between Migration Assistant and what's called Setup Assistant in the first boot utility.

  • Migrating from a Leopard HDD to Lion

Well, it happened. My '08 MacBook Pro just couldn't stay alive long enough for the next refresh of the model line and whimpered out in the saddest way: was using it at work, put it to sleep and took it home and when I wanted to check my mail, it never woke up again. AASP sez the logic board is fried and the cost of the part exceeds market value of the thing and also represents a sizable portion of the cost of a new one. So, a minute of silence for the Mac that has gone to joint its creator. And I'll be forced to upgrade the hardware before I expected; like it or not, Lion here I come.
Only valuable remains is the undamaged 200GB HDD securely mounted on an external FW800 enclosure and containing, well, my digital life. The question is: can you successfully carry out a migration into Lion from an external HDD via FW or USB?
Before it died, it had the latest patched version of 10.5.8 and the HDD has Apple firmware on it. Would like to be able to recover all my Thunderbird mail, my iTunes library, my iPhoto collection and the rest of the regular files.
Info, insights, gotchas to beware (and condolences) will be much appreciated.

I Think that you could try this: Install Lion on your new computer. Then the normal way, I think, is to use Migration Assistant but this involves hooking the two machines together, and you say that your old machine's logic board is fried. (Unless you have it repaired.) So I don't think that would work. So, when your new machine is up and running on Lion, connect your Firewire drive to it and see what is on it that you could copy over.
iPhoto's library of photos in Lion is in System Hard Drive > Users > Username >  Pictures. You say that your iPhoto collection is on the Firewire drive, so look for it there and copy across to the Pictures folder in Lion. I did that successfully when I got my new Mac.
I don't use iTunes, but my iTunes library is called (on Lion) "iTunes Library xyz" (where "xyz" is a date sequence". So search for that title (without the "xyz) and copy it across as above. However, others could advise where it should be copied to in Lion.) The same applies to other files, but I can't help with Thunderbird.
Another way would be to take out your internal Hard Drive (if that can be done on a MacBook Pro) and put it into a external HD enclosure suitable for that size and type of drive. These are boxes with sockets and leads to enclose a bare drive and make it connectable to a computer. They are quite cheap.I did that successfully with my G5's internal, and I still use it as a backup. It is USB, and gets its power through the USB lead.
    Hope this helps. Good luck.

  • Migrating from office 365 to OSX Server 2.2.1 Mail server.

    hi folks,
I am considering setting up an OSX Server v 2.21 and using it as my main mail server at home, and migrating away from office 365, and using the OSX mail server as my main server. I have my own domain name, and i would be the only user of the mail server.
I would be running this on a mac mini i7 with 16 GB ram.
what anti virus / spam applications are there available for the mac mail server?
    thanks.

The power in your computer is fine.  I was just trying to warn you that if any network requests come in the server configuration immediately priorises that higher than interacting with the user sitting that the keyboard.  Apps you are using may stutter until the network request has been answered.  Of course, if you don't have many network users and with a computer that powerful, it probably won't take the server long enough to answer the network request that you notice any problem.
No webmail portal for mail, and no easy way to add one.  Just mail apps using POP, SMTP, etc..
Here's the manual for OS X Server if you're interested:
