Migration FRS - DFSR (Sysvol) 2 questions.

Good day to all.
I apologize in advance for my bad english.
I have learned this SYSVOL Replication Migration Guide: FRS to DFS Replication and blog SYSVOL
Migration Series. Then I successfully completed the migration FRS->DFSR, but I still have 2 questions:
1. There is a step "force AD replication" (repadmin /syncall /A /e /d), for example in article about migration to the "prepared" global state. But why this step is at the "Monitoring" stage? I mean there is point to force replication
immediately after setting the global state to accelerate the reception of migration directive by domain controllers. But why force replication when the migration to the specified state is done? The same question about dfsrdiag /pollAD.
2. There is information, that SYSVOL_DFSR will contain only "domain" and "sysvol" folders and it is true. Should I manually create "staging" and "staging areas" with junction point inside or not? I do not really know
what these folders are needed for.
Thanks.

Hi there, I recently upgraded our domain and forest functional levels and also performed an FRS to DFSR upgrade.
Like you, I used the SYSVOL Migration Series blog posts for guidance.
1. The force steps are optional. I'm not sure when you might want to do this, perhaps your network is configured with longer replication intervals and you want to force it to start rather than wait until it replicates on its own.
2. You shouldn't need to create any extra folders from my understanding.
These are the steps I took when performing this on our environment
1. Use Active Directory Domains and Trusts to raise domain level
2. Use Active Directory Domains and Trusts to raise forest level
3. Run the following commands on your "primary" DC (the one with FSMO roles and PDC emulator)
dfsrmig /SetGlobalState 1
dfsrmig /GetGlobalState
dfsrmig /GetMigrationState
dfsrmig /SetGlobalState 2
dfsrmig /GetGlobalState
dfsrmig /GetMigrationState
dfsrmig /SetGlobalState 3
dfsrmig /GetGlobalState
dfsrmig /GetMigrationState
As you already know, SetGlobalState will instruct AD to move to the next state, GetGlobalState is there so you can confirm it's at the correct state. Finally, run GetMigrationState a few times as it'll show you the progress as the DCs in your domain migrate
through different states. We have various DCs around Australia and it took no more than 10 minutes for them to migrate from one step to the next without the need to force replication.
Our environment isn't very heavily modified with regards to replication.

  • Migrate to DFSR - in MS Windows 2008 R2

    hello,
We are trying to migrate to DFSR. I am following the step as per the guide
    https://blogs.technet.com/b/qzaidi/archive/2012/01/16/quickly-explained-migrate-your-sysvol-replication-from-frs-to-dfsr.aspx
I get this error at both step 1 and 8:

    Hi,
Before going further, what’s our domain function level? As stated in the blog you mentioned, to utilize DFSR to replicate Sysvol, our domain functional level must be Windows
Server 2008 or above.  Besides, we can go to check Event Viewer to see whether some related error events were logged and keep us posted.
Regarding Sysvol replication migration and how to troubleshoot it, the following article can be referred to for more information.

  • Migrating from Comcast PWP - redirection question

I've run my website hosted by Comcast PWP for 18 months, but it's time to move on as FileZilla stopped working and Comcast PWP support seems to have sunset.
Since I built my website by hand (HTML and Notepad) instead of using proprietary PWP tools, it's easy to move the pages to another web hosting provider.
My question is: what's the best way to redirect clicks on my Comcast PWP website to the new host?
I have a domain name (http://newbostonhistoricalsociety.com) at Register.com, and I've pointed that to the new host instead of Comcast.
Therefore anyone accessing my website from the homepage will get content from the new host.
However, many Google searches point to my individual web pages with the Comcast name embedded in the URL: http://home.comcast.net/~nbhs/cannon.html for example.
I've got a dozen or more pages like this one which got a lot of hits over the past year and a half.
I would like to preserve whatever "link juice" I've built up with the search engines while I steer traffic to the new URLs and host.
It appears that there are two popular ways to redirect traffic.
I can use a "Meta Refresh Tag" in my header or I can try to implement a 301 redirect. (I hope I'm using the correct terminology.)
The 301 redirect looks like it would globally redirect all traffic from my Comcast site to the new site.
However, I've got to create an .htaccess file in the root of my web server, and I'm not sure if I can do that with Comcast PWP or how.
I also don't understand if all clicks get redirected to the home page of the new site, which might confuse people.
Plan B is to put a "Meta Refresh Tag" into each of the separate pages' HTML files so that for example http://home.comcast.net/~nbhs/cannon.html would be redirected to the new site's URL http://newbostonhistoricalsociety.com/cannon.html .  Once there, any clicks would stay on the new site.
Does anyone have thoughts about what's best?
I've read mixed reviews on the "Meta Refresh Tag" as to whether or not it upsets Search Engine Optimization. Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

  • Migrate database strategy, have two question?

    Hello,
I will migrate a huge whole database from serverA (9i db) to server B 10G), will do like this:
    1. Export/Import structures
    2. Disable constraints and set indexes UNUSABLE (check if 10g can set PK/UK indexes to UNUSABLE state)
    3. Direct insert data through db link
    4. Rebuild all indexes
    5. Enable all constraints
I am not very cleaer about step 2 and step 3, who can give me an explaination how to do like that?
    Thank you
    Jerry

Why would you import the indexes and constraints in step 1 only to disable them in step 2?
Why are you copying the data across a database link rather than just using export and import?
Define "huge" in terms of database size.
    What is your downtime window?
What operating system(s) are being used?
Can you use [transportable tablespaces|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96520/transpor.htm#12010] instead?

  • Migration from 2003 to 2008R2 - Questions from a first-timer

    How is everybody doing.
I'm managing for the very first time a WSUS server.
Right now there's a WS2003x64 SP2 STD handling this role. The issue is that this server has gotten out of control: MMC crashes all the time due to different causes. For example: when I try to delete more or less 20 PCs it crashes, when I try to run the cleanup
utility it also happens, when this occurs all the actions that were started don't happen and WSUS stays the same.
This made me recommend the option of starting a new server (I've said to use a 2008R2 which I believe will have SP1 installed, don't know if it makes a difference here). Here's my thinking, I'd like to get any recommendation regarding these steps:
1- Install OS and role (with IIS, WID and Report Viewer 2008): do the role automatically install all neccesary tools for report creation and PCs reporting to the WSUS? After that update WSUS to SP2.
The server will use a different IP than the actual.
2- Create all the neccesary Computer Groups: will use a couple of groups for testing and then split all servers and user computers in
Critical (for servers), Download & Choose Install
(for servers), Automatic Install (for servers) and Workstations
(automatic install), Critical Workstations (DL & choose) and use client-side targeting to fill them.
3- Apply GPOs on the OUs hosting each type of computers: here I have a question; can I have the same computer apply to two different WSUS? On my mind the computer status should be the same on both so it shouldn't be a problem.
4- Choose the products and type of updates to syncronize.
5- Start synchronization with Windows Update to retrieve available updates.
And that should be it. Will this work? I guess I'm missing info here regarding implementation, let me know and I'll tell you what my plan is.
    Thanks.

When I start synchronizing the server: which updates for approval will show? All the available ones on Windows Update catalog or only the ones that are missing on the computers/servers on our environment?
The Windows Update Agent will flag any update that is Not Installed and could be installed as "Needed". That does not, however, mean that the update should be installed, or that it would be installed even if you approved it.
Rule #1: Do not approve updates that are superseded. That will solve 90% of the issues right off the top.
Rule #2: Do not approve updates that are not listed as "Needed". (You can approve them later if you want them available for future systems.)
Rule #3: Consider approving updates in small to medium quantity batches. I suggest focusing on only Security Updates to start with. As the WSUS server downloads the updates, the clients will start to see these updates as available for installation. If you
approve a large number of updates, the download may take several days. Invariably this results in a client installing small batches of updates over several days, which has a unique tendency to totally annoy the person trying to use the computer to do real
    work.
Regarding WSUS functionality: When I approve an update and it installs automatically due to GPO setting the 4th option. Now I have to uninstall it because it crashes an application being used in the company.
This can be a real problem -- which is why the most important part of patch management is TEST TEST TEST. Identify a PILOT group of highly-trusted and aware users for doing your initial deployment. If they don't encounter any issues in 48-72 hours, then
it's appropriate to unleash the updates on the rest of the organization.
When Automatic Updates searches again for new patches, will WSUS push and install the same update again?
Well, that depends. If you identify an update that is defective, the very first thing you should do is decline the update. This will prevent most future installations of the update. Clients that have already downloaded the update will still try to install
it until they discover it has been declined. If the update is declined, and you then uninstall the update, the client will not attempt to install the update again because it does not have an approval. If you don't remove the approval and remove the update,
the client will most definitely attempt to (re)install that update at the next opportunity.
When does it stop pushing updates? Can I configure that?
When you remove the approval for installation via the WSUS console.

  • Siebel Professional Edition migrating to Siebel Enterprise Edition Question

I've got a customer who originally deployed Siebel Professional Edition (SPE) but is now looking to migrate to Enterprise Edition as their company has grown.
Does anyone know what the practical impact of that may be to their implementation (if any)?
Does SPE use the same code base as Enterprise Edition - so in essence it's a licensing construct rather than having any technical differences?
I've searched to try and find any info, discussion related to this point but have drawn a blank.
Any feedback, guidance, input much appreciated!

    Hi,
From what I recall as a Siebel employee it is the same code base with just some restrictions on what you can do to customize. There are certain things in Siebel Tools you cannot do for example.

  • Migrating from SonicWALL to RRAS - questions on functionality for business network setup & monitoring

At my organization we are planning to move away from using SonicWALL and using Microsoft Server 2012 RRAS to handle IPv4 NAT routing and VPN connections for remote employees.  I am trying to plan for all the functionality I currently have in our
SonicWALL router, and I'm not familiar with the Windows equivalent for some features and/or if the available features will have all the  functionality our organization needs.  Additionally wondering if there is something better that you would recommend
in terms of ease-of-use / management from an IT standpoint.
    Feature:  Firewall
I assume that Windows Advanced Firewall can handle all the firewall settings that I would normally find in an enterprise router.  Is this a correct assumption?
    Feature:  Content blocking
What Microsoft technology would I use for blocking certain content and websites from being viewed in the workplace network?  Can Windows Firewall handle these two types of content blocking?:
Blocking websites by general content - i.e. block porn sites.
    Blocking websites by specific URL
    Feature:  Network activity monitoring
In cases where the network is slow, what would I use to inspect what IP/MAC is hogging bandwidth?  Currently on SonicWALL we are able to see which computer is hogging bandwidth, see what website is, how much bandwidth it is consuming.  Can RRAS
handle this level of detail, or is SCOM / some other technology more well-suited?  Should we use a non-Microsoft application (something like Wireshark) instead?
Feature: Network prioritization (QoS / bandwidth management)
Can we set certain network groups to have priority over others?  For example, if we split our incoming network into two networks using RRAS, 192.168.50.x for data and 10.0.50.x for VOIP, I want the VOIP network to get priority in order to
ensure quality audio on all phone calls.  I assume this is available in RRAS.
Basically I'm just looking to see what systems I need set up to satisfy these business needs.  If anyone has any real-world experience let me know what your setup is like -- I'm curious to know!

"I assume that Windows Advanced Firewall can handle all the firewall settings that I would normally find in an enterprise router.  Is this a correct assumption?"
Your statement as it stands is correct.  In fact, Windows firewall will handle more firewall settings than those found in a
router.  However, SonicWall is not just a router - it's a firewall.  There is a big difference. Given that you are comparing Windows Firewall to a robust firewall, I agree with Dennis that you should either stay with SonicWall or
look at Microsoft's product.  But, given that on the link Dennis provided, you will find that Microsoft is discontinuing UAG, you might want to stick with what you know - SonicWall.  Or, you need to evaluate your needs more.  Yes, Microsoft
provides a number of built-in capabilities that may address your particular needs.  We can't answer that.  But, if there are features you need that are not available via Windows Server, then it is best to get a product that addresses those needs.

  • General SYSVOL migration from FRS to DFSR

    Hi all.
I have a question regarding Sysvol Migration from FRS to DFSR.
We have migrated all of our Domain Controllers from Server 2003 to Server 2008 R2 about 2 years ago.
I know that if Server 2003 was in use initially and you upgrade to Server 2008 R2, you need to do a FRS to DFSR migration in order for you Sysvol to make use of DFSR.
My question is if we are upgrading now to server 2012 R2 would there be a time that this would happen automatically or do we still need to do the sysvol migration before upgrading to server 2012 R2.
Another question I have is do we need to do the FRS to DFSR migation on all our child domains as well ?
    Many thanks for your time.
    Your answers would be appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    Shaun

    Hi There.
Yes that would be great. I would probably use the active directory removal method but I dont know if this would work as its the last domain contoller and it is not replicating with the top level domain at the moment.
NTDSUTIL would probably need to be used ro list the servers in that domain and remove them and then if I'm correct I would need to remove the domain namig contect with the instructions below.
Removing Orphaned Domains from Active Directory
Determine the domain controller that holds the Domain Naming Master Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) role. To identify the server holding this role:
Start the Active Directory Domains and Trusts Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in from the
    Administrative Tools menu.
Right-click the root node in the left pane titled
Active Directory Domains and Trusts, and then click Operations Master.
The domain controller that currently holds this role is identified in the Current Operations Master frame.NOTE: If this changed recently, not all computer may have received this change yet due to replication.
For more information about FSMO roles, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
197132 Windows 2000 Active Directory FSMO Roles
Verify that all servers for the domain have been demoted.
Click Start, point to Programs, point to
Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
At the command prompt, type: ntdsutil.
Type: metadata cleanup, and then press ENTER.
Type: connections, and then press ENTER. This menu is used to connect to the specific server on which the changes will occur. If the currently logged-on user is not a member of the Enterprise Admins group, alternate credentials can be supplied
by specifying the credentials to use before making the connection. To do so, type:
set creds domainname username password , and then press ENTER. For a null password, type:
    null for the password parameter.
Type: connect to server <var>servername</var> (where <var>servername</var> is the name of the domain controller holding the Domain Naming Master FSMO Role), and then press ENTER. You should receive confirmation that the connection is successfully
established. If an error occurs, verify that the domain controller being used in the connection is available and that the credentials you supplied have administrative permissions on the server.
Type: quit, and then press ENTER. The Metadata Cleanup menu is displayed.
Type: select operation target, and then press ENTER.
Type: list domains, and then press ENTER. A list of domains in the forest is displayed, each with an associated number.
Type: select domain <var>number</var>, and then press ENTER, where <var>number</var> is the number associated with the domain to be removed.
Type: quit, and then press ENTER. The Metadata Cleanup menu is displayed.
Type: remove selected domain, and then press ENTER. You should receive confirmation that the removal was successful. If an error occurs, please refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base for articles on specific error messages.
Type: quit at each menu to quit the NTDSUTIL tool. You should receive confirmation that the connection disconnected successfully.
Thanks again for all your help.
    Regards.

  • FRS to DFSR migration (Child domain)

Planning on migrating FRS to DFSR for a child domain, I know this is a per domain process.
It shouldn't matter which domain is migrated first, the child or root. But to doublecheck : The plan is to migrate they child domain and the root domain will take a couple of months before it's prepared. Does it matter? Even though i'm pretty certain it
doesn't matter because it's a per domain process, but wanted to verify.

    No, it doesn't.

  • Question about Backing Up apps and using Migration tool

Since installing Leopard on my G5 PPC, I have been having a strange problem with the sleep, screen saver. Anytime the system goes into screensaver or sleep, it will not come back and will be frozen. Needless to say I was told by the Mac Genius guys that I need to do a clean install.
So my real question now is about backing up all my apps and then using the migration tool to bring them back into the new install. I was going to attempt to use Carbon Copy Cloner on a second internal drive (Time Machine has never worked for me on my Lacie 500gb.) Once I have a full bootable copy, I will do a clean install (erase and install option) on my original drive, then I guess I am going to use the migration tool.
    So my questions are:
    1) Does this strategy seem like it will work?
    2) Is the migration tool straightforward? IE - Can I pick and choose what to put back on the new install?
    3) Any pitfalls that I should be aware of?
I have already backed up my docs and data to the external, but I have so many programs with plugins installed that getting my apps back the way they are is essential to me.
    Thanks.

Remember Time Machine is designed to do constant, incremental backups of your HDD. If you delete something from the internal HDD of the Mac it will no longer be backed up to the external HDD and will eventually be deleted from the backup archive as time passes and TM keeps doing its backups.
What will probably be a better solution is to simply drag-n-drop the entire iTunes folder to an external HDD for backup and use that as the main iTunes library. The drawback to this is that to play the music you'll need to have the external HDD connected. Unless your plan is not to delete all the music from your MBP, just some of it.

  • DFRS on sysvol with windows server 2008r2 and windows server 2012r2

I currently have windows server 2008 r2 domain with forest and domain at 2008r2 full functional level.
The domain was originally 2003 full functional level.
I want to promote a windows server 2012 r2 system to a domain controller.
While doing some prep work I found that the sysvol relication has not been migrated to DFSR and is using FRS.
Will I need to migrate to DFSR before promoting the 2012 r2 DC or can that wait?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
To install active directory in Windows Server 2012 R2 you must just be sure that the domain functional level and forest functional level is 2003 or higher. you don't need to migrate Sysvol system replication to DFSR.
When you install the first domain controller in Windows Server 2008 or higher and choose  the domain functional level 2008 or higher, the replication system used by Sysvol will be DFSR automatically.
On the other side, if you domain functional level was 2003, to apply DFSR for Sysvol replication you must raise the domain functional to 2008 or higher, and launch dfsrmig
to complete the migration t get more details look at the link below:

  • 2008r2 dc - NRFRS or DFSR

    Hello,
We have a windows 2008r2 domain controllers. I wanted to find out if we are using NRFRS or DFSR.
    1) How can I check this?
    2) How do I migrate to DFSR
    Thanks.

    Hi Birenc,
You  need to do a metadata cleanup to remove all the old references from active directory.
Make sure that you seize the FSMO roles (if any) to your primary DC. And also Do check DNS zones and DNS zone proerties, Name server tab and AD sites and services.

  • AP Open Items Migration

    Experts,
I am working on AP Open Item Migration and have a quick question with respect to it - I was planning on using FB60, but then I don't see an option to enter LC and GC Amount there (LC amount field is disabled and is calculated automatically using the FOREX rate).
As I am bringing over historical data, I need that option - I checked the posting keys and field status groups, but that didnt help.
So the only option for me is to go with F-05 , but before going that route, I wanted to check with you guys on whether there are any options available to achieve this.
    Appreciate your quick response.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Check your editing options for FB60 (Button 'Editing Options'), if the relevant settings are made. In any case, for migration it's better to use BAPI than transaction recording. Use BAPI_ACC_DOCUMENT_POST.

  • How long does it take to migrate mail data from snow leopard to lion. Waiting for hours

OK, so here I thought I was solving a calendar sync problem by updating my OS from 10.6.8 to 10.7.3. Initially unable to load the mail app, however this seemed to work after taking out the "envelope index" file as suggested in this forum. New mail program loaded, but now stuck with rolling blue and white candy bar on a window inside the "Mail Upgrade" window stating "migrating data ...".Thinking I might simply have a lot of data I waited 5 (!!) hours,... No change. I went back to Finder and once again removed the envelope index file as well as all files with a .plist extension. Again started mail, again stuck with the screen "migrating data". So my question: Do I just have to wait (and then for how long? Days?), or do I have to tweek my MacBook Pro a little to be able to once again read and write e-mail?
    Thanks

12 hours and did not finish. Still left with the message: migrating data. I cannot imagine what the program is doing.
So I force quit mail and cleaned up everything I know to clean up: went to folder "~/library/Mail" and deleted everything I thought was not needed. Emptied the trash. Now, of course, I have a fair amount of mails in different folders that are stored in the mail program. But from a total data amount point of view this should be trivial.
Restarted mail, get the screen: "Mail Message Import", click "Continue"
Then program successfully imports 4563 messages in less than 2 minutes.
Then - once again - rotating candy bar with message "migrating data ..."
There is no way to see what is actually happening and no way to stop the process other than force quit.
    Help!!!

  • Migration to 11.1.2.2 problem, ApplicationModule not found.

    Hi Guys,
After migrating our existing oracle ADF application from version 11.1.1.3 to the new version 11.1.2.2 we faced the below error on several screens. It seems that for different reasons we are loosing the application module without even having any error in the error log, then afterward whatever we do (ex: query a view that exist in the app module or call a function that exist in the app module or …….) we receive the below error.
Note that for migration we opened and compiled the code on the version 11.1.1.4 then we went directly to the version 11.1.2.2, this is the certified way from oracle (check the link below)

So I guess the question is:
    1) did anyone out there face this issue???
    2) Is our migration path wrong???
    3) Does anyone migrated successfully so far????

    Hi,
if the application module runs in the tester then you can exclude the business service as the source of the problem. In this case have a look in the DataBindings.cpx file and the view controller project dependencies. E.g. if you added the ADF BC reference as a ADF library, check this library. If you have a project dependency, check this and compile the ADF model sources.
If this doesn't help, the best recommendation is to work with customer support on how to reproduce this issue
    Frank
